Product Description
This is a selection of Magnum photographers' images of landscapes from around the world, from the 1930s to the present day.Amazon.com Review
Landscape, says Henri Peretz, is the photographic genre whichabove all others "sets in competition the simple viewer, thepainter, the amateur and professional photographer." This book, which marks the 50th anniversary of the Magnum Photo Agency, collectsimages by some of the most imaginative photographers of thecentury. Many have the eye of great painters: Henri Cartier-Bresson'sstudy of picnickers on the bank of the River Marne is like a Renoirbrought to life, while Bruno Barbey's exquisite color image ofsoldiers descending the hills of Kurdistan has the quality of anAlbert Bierstadt canvas. There are some wonderfully surreal visionshere too, such as Bruce Davidson's shot of the Statue of Liberty witha New Jersey junkyard in the foreground, and Richard Kalvar's image ofa naked man on the Brooklyn Bridge. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good shipment
Ordered to be shipped to Australia, arrived fairly fast considering the distance. No complaints.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is what it is

This is a book with no pretense: Fantastic images, from some of the world's greatest photographers, collected under the shaky title of "landscape," and put together in a well-designed, under-sized, cheaply produced pamphlet-book that can be purchased for under twenty dollars.

5-0 out of 5 stars handy photo book
It's cheap, small and light weighted. But filled with wonderful photos.
You can read it everywhere, in subway, in park, in rest room.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your average landscape photography book
You wouldn't think Magnum, a photo agency best known for its outstandingphotojournalism, could produce a compelling collection of landscapephotographs. But going through the book, it made perfect sense.Thesephotographs aren't the sublime visions of the natural world one associateswith the art of landscape, whether in photography (e.g., A. Adams, theWestons) or painting (e.g., all of the Hudson River School artists), butare reports of the state of the world expressed through our landscape.Itworks much in the same way as Magnum Degrees (the more conventional Magnumcollection, which sets forth a gripping vision of the state of the world atthe end of the millenium), but instead of events and people, theenvironment is the primary mode of expression in Magnum Landscape.(Thereare some overlapping photos between the two books, in fact.)This isn't tosay the photos aren't beautiful and artfully composed, because most of themare, in their own way.My admiration for Magnum photographers grows eachtime I discover one of their books. My admiration for the reproductionquality of Magnum Landscape, however, is nonexistent. The printing, frankly, blows (judging from a comparison of photos that are reproduced inboth Landscape and Degrees). The book is probably still worth getting, because it's the only way you can get this fine selection of photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons in seeing
Look at a famous Ansel Adams print and you see (generalising grossly) a technically immaculate, beautiful image of something that is itself obviously impressive and beautiful. Which is not to belittle the level ofvisual imagination and craftsmanship that went into making thosephotographs.

Look at some of the images in this book and you seesomething utterly different -- the ability to see a picture, to pull acompelling and fascinating image, out of nothing, out of scenes most peoplewouldn't even glance twice at. Street corners, car parks, shadows onsand.

Again a gross generalisation, and there is work from a lot ofdifferent photographers in the book, but there is a coherent editorial eyeat work here anda definite Magnum "house style".

I boughtthis book at the same time as a book of Ansel Adams classic prints. Ilooked through this one first and thought "oh no, now the Ansel Adamsstuff will be boring". It isn't, it's completely different, but for methe Magnum pictures are more inspiring. ... Read more

Product Description
In our times, cityscapes are no longer dictated from above, by urban planners, architects, engineers— or even by geography — but "from below," by how the people live and work in groups. By simple, aggregated acts, people become spontaneous city planners: their urban design incorporates grafitti and street restaurants; makeshift homes that take their own formal pattern of development; ads and neon lights that become an integral part of the 'natural' landscape, as they have been for decades in LasVegas. Even civic monuments can emerge, like the hundreds of names of desaprecidos "the disappeared" scratched in dirt in Buenos Aires. These changes are not accidents: they are "What We Want."

This kind of global transformation is not adramatic force compared to erecting a skyscraper or residential housing – sometimes it is not even quitevisible. But this force operates in strikingly similar ways in cities around the world; it is a profound social force in that it changes the way we interact and how we ultimately exert control over ourenvironment. ... Product Description
"Elemental Landscapes" accompanies an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art that concentrates exclusively on the landscape photographs of the late American photographer Harry Callahan. The natural landscape was a subject that occupied Callahan throughout his career, and examples range in time from the early 1940s to the early 1990s, providing an in-depth look at the artist's evolution. Callahan was fascinated not by the wide, sweeping landscapes of photographers like Ansel Adams but by more intimate pictures, which often remove the context of earth and sky from the scene, creating abstractions that challenge our notions of landscape by presenting a small slice of the world in all its infinite detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Karam's Vision
William Karam has a keen eye for the tonal implications of sun and sand and the planes of foliage and architecture. I "read" this Fire Island collection with the same satisfaction I get from settling in with a volume of lithographs from the hands of an artist like Stow Wengenroth. Karam's photos bring you into cool spaces on a hot day, into the sun when there are clouds, taking everyday scenes and coaxing the eye to see spatial relationships and emotional impacts in a new way. If you love the woods and the dunes, shore life and the hand of man, whether you know the Island or not, I recommend Karam's work without hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Images by Top Notch Photographer
William Karam is to the photographic image as Jackson Pollock was to canvas...moving, thought-provoking, one-of-a kind artist.Focusing on the beauty of Fire Island, NY (a ferry ride south of Long Island, NY), William shares his personal view of this local paradise. His rich contrasts, warm tones and interesting subjects, as well as his exceptional understanding of black and white imagery, make for a wonderful escape. The physical quality of this book, too, must be noted: hard cover over thick photo-enhancing paper, make for a viewing experience worth the time and expense.I highly recommend this book for lovers of photography, local residents, vacationers, summering New York City dwellers, and those who wish to experience a taste of east coast charm.

In May 1999 a Bill was passed in the House of Commons to provide an amnesty to help with the identification and location of a number of people who had disappeared during the "Troubles" in Northern Ireland. Six locations were identified and became known as the "Sites of the Disappeared". These were the burial places of eight people murdered by the IRA. They were all Catholic and had been taken from their families and their homeland to be buried in the South. In June 2000 the search was finally suspended. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Of all the landscape books I ordered in 2004 this was the the biggest disappointment. I got the impression the author tries to convince me about his personal definition about what landscape photography is, with examples of images I wouldn't take a second look at.
If you're interested in beauty of nature and not in an abstract thesis about the definition and value of art look for books from Art Wolfe or Jack Dykinga.

5-0 out of 5 stars A revealing look at landscape
Art,at its best, unveils an experience we did not have before. Sometimes it's an emotional response, sometimes it's intellectual. But it should show you something that you had not noticed or felt or thought of before. Good photography books should do the same.To often we look at landscape photographs as documentation or keepsakes and not as a form for expression. This book reminds us of how expressive landscape photography can be when the right person is behind the camera. It also reminds us how revealing a photography book can be when the right author is behind the word. Mr. Protzman knows a lot about looking. But most importantly he knows a lot about revealing. This is truly a book worth looking at and reading. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An alright book, but there are better
This book contains a fair amount of good technical information regarding landscape photography, but the photos don't compare with the stunning photos in other books and the information isn't presented in a particularlyaccessible manner. If you're looking for a landscape photography book, Iwould suggest there are better books out there than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really superb book
I stumbled upon this book at my local library, and decided to see what it was about.

Not only were the pictures clear (and eye-catching), but the text was very clear and descriptive. She gave descriptive details about each photo she shot, and what she recommended (along with what kind of lense would work)

It would've been nice to know more about the author, but for the most part, it was great reading and a true keeper. ... Read more

Product Description

In this magnificent book, Oliver Schuchard provides more than sixty-five exquisite black-and-white photographs spanning his thirty-eight years of photography. In addition, he explains the aesthetic rationale and techniques he used in order to produce these photographs, emphasizing the profound differences between, yet necessary interdependence of, craft and content. Although Schuchard believes that craft is important, he maintains that the idea behind the photograph and the emotional content of the image are equally vital and are, in fact, functions of one another.
The author also shares components of his life experience that he believes helped shape his development as an artist and a teacher. He chose the splendid photographs included in this book from among nearly 5,000 negatives that had been exposed all over the world, from Missouri to Maine, California, Alaska, Colorado, France, Newfoundland, and Hawaii, among many other locations. Approximately 250 negatives survived the initial review, and each of those was printed before a final decision was made on which photographs were to be featured in the book. The final choices are representative of Schuchard’s work and serve to substantiate his belief that craft, concept, and self must be fully understood and carefully melded for a good photograph to occur. This amazing work by award-winning photographer Oliver Schuchard will be treasured by professional and amateur photographers alike, as well as by anyone who simply enjoys superb photography.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good tips but not realistic photos
I really appreciate this book in terms of good tips and trips!
But, man, I really non understand the way to over saturate photos.
Canadian landscape is so beautiful on its own....we don't really need to make it up as a woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful, both literarally and literaturely
The authors present their view of Canada in a colorful and often in a 'colorful' manner. The photography is world-class and the writing is light, easy and often humorous.

This book was a constant companion on my trip toeastern Canada and a most helpful guide to locating well known locations,as well as off the beaten path "secrets."

I was not aphotographer when I first read this book, nor was I after the secondread-through. By the third read I was wanting to be: If the authors havethis much fun pursuing their craft, then I want to be a part of it.Thankfully they included a very methodical techniques chapter for ourbenefit.

This book does not disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshing visual journey across Canada
All to often photographers arrogantly believe their images will support weak writing. Benson and Wilson obviously had set a goal of writing and photographic excellence from the beginning, and did they ever succeed! Fromcover to cover this guide/reference/instructional, and yes, to some extentcoffee table book, establishes a new standard -- a standard that will beextremely difficult for those following to attain.

The authors take us ona visual journey across Canada, from coast to coast to coast. The trip isone of visual stimulation, along with useful information on how to getthere and when is the best time of year to visit. Non-photographers willalso benefit from the detailed travel instructions.

Benson and Wilson aremasters at extracting colour from a scene. Their overt use of filtersstimulates the senses with each image pulling the viewer into the scene.Yet they succeed where so many others have failed: they use filters in acomplimentary manner, not in a 'look at me I'm filtered because thephotographer didn't know how to handle the light' variety. Fortunately forus, the authors put in a very useful chapter on photographictechnique.

This book is visually exciting, a fun read and an excellantaddition to my library. Even if you are not planning a trip north of the49th parallel this book is worth the price simply because it is the best ofits kind: it communicates. Kudos to the authors.

2-0 out of 5 stars useful book with good places and ideas, but over-saturated.
As a canadian, I am happy to see a photography book that covers the country from one corner to the other. It is an easy, even humorous read, with plenty of good location and photography ideas. On the down side, thephotographs by the two authors are good but enhanced over the top. theytake a nicely saturated film like velvia, and top it up withblue/yellowpolarizers and other enhancing filters. The result is the visual equivalentof a parfume bath, with the predictable result: it gives you a strongheadache!Bottom line is this: it is a reasonableguide to photographingcanada, and if you really want to, you too can do it in sledge-hammersaturation. What are the alternatives? If you want somethingmore naturalbut without location info, try "The Last Wilderness: Images of TheCanadian Wild" edited by Freeman Patterson. For a lot of greatcanadian location photography, try a series of coffee-table books by PierreBerton ("Seacoasts", "Great Lakes" etc) photos by AndreGallant. ... Read more
