Non-rhyming verse about being out of work, the strains that tag along and the sinking boat you feel you're riding in. This collection deals with a difficult subject in a very real way. Its strength is its realness and that is also its greatest weakness. It's not for the faint of heart. A must-have for anyone who deals in human resources, personnel, recruitment, job placement, or has been fired, laid-off and is out of work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CANNED IS THE BOOK THAT CAN!
Anthony Buccino, one of New Jersey's foremost poets, has written a book about the F-word:FIRED!In CANNED..., each poem commiserates with all of us who have at one time or another been given the pink slip, sent out to pave the pavements in search of a new job. Here is a book for everyone who has suffered that indignation and all those who have yet to do so or will manage to retire without ever being CANNED!

I highly recommend this book!

Product Description
The acclaimed socio-legal study of the Bracero labor program, why it failed, and what that means to immigration policy and organizational theory.By Kitty Calavita, professor of criminology, law and society at UC-Irvine and author of Invitation to Law & Society (U. of Chicago, 2010), now with a new Foreword in a high-quality ebook edition with active contents, active index, and linked footnotes.

Professor Calavita unearthed INS and Congressional records, and conducted extensive personal interviews of the people involved, to figure out why this program of temporary farmworkers, which dominated for more than two decades in the Southwest U.S., collapsed. Her findings tell us much about the catch-22 of migration and refutes stereotypic political theory of agency "capture" to explain the program's demise. They also tell a fascinating methodological story of entrenched agencies and the sheer archaeology of stubborn research in the face of vested interests and agency inertia.

Adopted in many college classes over the years, and now available in its 2010 edition with the author's new Foreword, as part of the Classics of Law & Society Series:a classic book with continuing substantive and methodological value. As her Foreword notes, worries about immigration and labor persist, as does basic dysfunction of the present form of INS. Digging deeper reveals the persistence of a structural tension between popular perceptions of immigration, the need for agricultural labor, and the dynamics inside the state's administrative structures -- in fact the human actors, she emphasizes -- that deal with these controversial issues.

The Virtual Dustjacket, from the Previous Edition:
“This book is a beautifully researched and welcome addition to the emerging literature on administrative discretion and policymaking in the immigration area. It cuts deeply through previously unexplored terrains of data — both oral histories and Immigration Service archives. It should be of considerable interest to every scholar looking for informed discussion about the nature of official behavior in difficult political contexts.”
— Janet A. Gilboy, Research Fellow, American Bar Foundation

“Using original materials, this is a masterful, insightful account of the political and bureaucratic politics of one of our most controversial programs — the ‘braceros.’ Calavita sheds important light on the origins and history of the braceros program, the complicated role of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Departments of Justice, Labor, and Agriculture, and their relationship to local political and agricultural interests. She deals with the dilemmas and contradictions between the need for cheap labor and the regulation of immigration. In so doing, Calavita makes important empirical and theoretical advances in understanding the connections between law, regulation, political science, economics, and sociology. This is a major contribution to our understanding of public policy.”
— Joel F. Handler, Professor of Law, UCLA

Connecting structural contradictions in the political economy to the details of agency decisionmaking, Inside the State provided one of the first in-depth analyses of the links between abstract theories of the state and real-life political actors and institutions. It will appeal to a wide range of academic researchers and state theorists, as well as immigration lawyers and immigrant rights advocates. Originally published by Routledge and now available in digital and paperback formats for flexible classroom assignment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remember the braceros!
Thanks to author Calavita, American society may remember the forgotten braceros, the close to 5 million Mexicans who came to this country between 1942 and 1964 to feed us all during and after WWII. The contribution made by the braceros should be recognized as we embark in the new millennium.Get the book and bring justice for the braceros. ... Read more

Product Description
Frances Perkins (1880-1965) was the first woman appointed to a U.S. cabinet post and the longest-serving Secretary of Labor. Perkins had a long and illustrious record as a social activist: she reorganized New York state's factory inspections system, advocated the Workmen's Compensation Act, and promoted the legislative protection of women and child laborers. As U.S. Secretary of Labor under Roosevelt she helped develop major New Deal legislation, including the Social Security Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Always regarded with some hostility by both organized labor and the business community, Perkins survived an attempt to impeach her in 1939. As one of the most distinguished and trailblazing women in the history of American government, Perkins is often studied in American history classes. Moreover, her career touched on issues key to our current debates about government and social policy. This book is richly illustrated with documents and rare photographs.

Oxford Portraits is a new series of biographies for young adults. Written by prominent writers and historians, each of these titles is designed to supplement the core texts of the middle and high school curriculum with intriguing, thoroughly informative and insightful accounts of the lives and work of the notable men and women who helped shape history. Each book is illustrated with numerous graphics, photographs, and documents. A unique feature is the inclusion of sidebars containing primary source material, mostly excerpts from the subject's writings. A chronology, further reading list, and index rounds out every volume. ... Read more
