When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

Bad weather prevailed during most of the two- week international competition. Though the sun didn't shine as much as people had hoped, Nagano produced numerous rising "stars," including members of the U.S. ski and luge teams. Sponsored by York International Corporation, the teams made the event memorable for more than ancient Japanese tradition and unique cuisine. 'Double' Take "No way," said one onlooker. "Impossible," said another. However, it was no dream. Members of the YORK-sponsored U.S. luge team had done it. They nabbed an Olympic medal in a sport that had jinxed the U.S. for 34 years. Make that two medals. It seems fitting that the U.S. won two medals in doubles luge competition. In any other Olympic sport, it wouldn't be as noteworthy. Similar to the women's Super G outcome, it was the closest doubles luge race in Olympic history, with the U.S. winning silver and bronze.

Between the Germans and Austrians (and Italians named Zoeggeler), it's a Teutonic sport. Germany swept all three golds last time and could do it again with Georg Hackl (gunning for four straight), Silke Kraushaar, and Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch in the doubles. US outlook: The Americans ended their 0-for-Olympics with two doubles medals in Nagano but they've been erratic on the World Cup circuit this winter. If they zone in on home ice, they could hit in all three events with Tony Benshoof, Becky Wilczak, and either Mark Grimmette-Brian Martin or Chris Thorpe-Clay Ives. Or they could miss across the board. US roster Men

Extractions: The origins of luge are very old, and it is necessary to go back to 800 AD to find the first accounts of the sport. The luge was used in Norway, near Oslo, as a means of transport and as a toy. Later, it appeared in Scandinavian stories from the 16th century from the Erz valleys in Norway. Czech miners also used them to move down the mountains. From the icy slopes of Russia to an Olympic sport In the 1700's in St Petersburg, events were held on the city's icy hills and on rudimentary artificial tracks. The sport spread throughout Europe and in 1883, the first official competition was held at Davos in Switzerland, with 21 competitors. Nevertheless, the first world championships weren't held until 1955 in Oslo. Fifty two athletes from eight countries competed in the event. Recognition of luge as an official sport came in 1957, with the founding of the International Luge Federation (FIL), and its inclusion as an Olympic sport in 1964. Champions roll The luge champions roll is dominated by the Austrians, as well as the Germans and includes great athletes such as Thomas Kohler and Georg Hackl. At the Calgary Olympic Games, East Germany dominated the luge medal tally, while at Albertville in 1992, Austria and Germany took away eight out of nine medals. Italy has produced champions of the calibre of Paul Hildgartner, Olympian at Lillehammer, and Armin Zoeggeller, who won gold at Salt Lake City in 2002. For the second time in Winter Olympic history, the USA took medals home in the luge event, with a silver and bronze in the men's pairs at Salt Lake City.

The events are held in two rounds. The time for each run is measured to the thousandth of a second, and the winner is the athlete with the fastest time. The event is competed in men's and women's individual as well as men's pairs. Individual (Men's and Women's) The athletes take off in a seated position, pushing themselves with the help of two fixed handles and their gloved hands for the first few metres. If the athlete is separated from the luge on arrival, he or she is disqualified. However, athletes may stop themselves during the descent to reposition the luge and then restart the race with another push off. If there are more than 30 athletes completing in the Olympic Games, they are divided into three groups: first round: the starting order is randomly selected from the three groups second round: the athletes compete in the reverse order of the first round third round: the starting order is based on the order of ranking after the first two rounds, with the leading competitor starting first.
