"This is completely unbelievable," said Seitz, who started luging in 1988, and has been leading the Canadian senior team since 1996. "Heading into the second run, I just told myself that I've done this run a million times, I know it, and to relax. What a great way to go out." Immediately following the race, Seitz officially announced his retirement from luge.

Almost too huge to luge. "I was not the model athlete," Suckow said. "I could sit on my laurels because I knew when I got on the sled that, even though I gave up time on the start, I could still make it up and finish fifth in the world. That's when you start lying to yourself and you start saying, 'Aw, I could've, I could've, I could've.' " Now, Suckow is just saying "I could." He's battled his weight problems and laziness and is geared up to try to become the first American to win an Olympic medal in luge. Suckow's career started to go downhill after he beat Germany's Georg Hackl to win the 1993 World Luge Championship in Calgary.

On Friday, both teams won medals - Thorpe and Sheer the silver, and Grimmette and Martin the bronze - to break the United States' 34-year Olympic jinx in the sport. "I think breaking my hand helped," said the 27-year-old Thorpe, of Marquette. "It distracted us a little bit. We knew we were definitely at a disadvantage, and we started to go up from there." Some in the crowd seemed to be gasping for air as the last run began Friday with both U.S. teams in medal contention. "I didn't breathe for an hour," said Ron Rossi, executive director of the U.S. Luge Association. "A lot of people have been working for a long time, some of us 20 years, to get us over the hump." These four sliders have excelled in the sport like no one else before them in the United States. Sheer and Thorpe became the first team members to win a World Cup title, winning four races to lock up the 1996-97 title. And Grimmette and Martin succeeded them this year with a similar performance.

Martin, at age 24, sees good sledding through at least age 30. "Right now, I'm pretty charged up," the 1992 Gunn High graduate said after earning his medal, "and I want to stay in. It's absolutely amazing that I'm standing on third-place (medal stand) at the Olympics." There's also plenty of room to improve. Martin and Grimmette, who came to Nagano as pre-Olympic favorites based on being World Cup champs, fell just short of their gold-medal goal in the closest luge doubles competition in Olympic history. Martin and Grimmette were the first to turn in their final run, clocking a two-run total of 1:41.217. Not only did the time establish a course record, but it assured the duo of no worse than a bronze medal, making Martin and Grimmette the first American Olympic medalists in luge doubles history.

Born in Illinois, Chris' family relocatd to Michigan when he was very young and it was there that he entered the sport of luge on natural ice tracks. Quickly showing potential, he was recruited to join the US Luge program in Lake Placid, New York. Seventeen years and two trips to the Olympic Medals podium later, Chris has become one of the sports "best-ever" and has one eye firmly fixed on a fifth trip to the Olympics in 2006. The other eye is now firmly fixed on his new born daughter Skylar (born March 13, 2002). Chris and his family now reside in Gainesville, Florida.
