Digital Libraries A Proposed Business Model links for both local and nonlocal use and lose mission remains the same for digitallibraries with the additional concern of maximizing the usefulness http://china.si.umich.edu/spp/courses/744/writings/lessure-memo2-2.html
Extractions: March 1996 Rising costs and new information demands will drive libraries of the future to become regional consortia of digital information services organized under a few large umbrella organizations. Members of these "metalibrary" consortia will continue to subsidize libraries as a public good with new expenses being covered by modest user fees for members and more substantial access charges for external users. From the new "Tower of Learning" in Paris to the Alexandria Library in ancient Egypt, libraries have been localized warehouses of physical information. With the advent of computerized networks and digital data storage, future libraries will preserve, create and organize digital information links for both local and non-local use and lose their physical form. A number of large, primarily university-based libraries are pioneering this restructuring to become virtual information providers. The changing mission, customers and costs of service will lead to the consolidation and specialization of digital libraries. The ongoing mission of libraries has been to acquire, organize, and preserve information, while making it accessible to a wide array of consumers.
