Law Related Education (LRE) is citizenship education with an emphasis on understanding the role of law as the basis of democratic society. LRE programs aim to help students, kindergarten through twelfth grade, know how and why our legal system operates as it does, the importance of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and the roles of lawyers and judges. LRE began in Idaho in 1985 as a public service program of the Idaho Law Foundation. Law Related Education focuses on "real world" issues and emphasizes interactive and engaging techniques such as role-play and simulation, mock trials, moot courts, debate, and case method analysis. Curriculum materials encourage the development of critical thinking, reasoning, decision-making, and oral and written communication skills. In Idaho we strive to fulfill our mission through a number of programs, including:

Extractions: Bulletin 107 Teaching street law as part of the curriculum in South Africa What is street law? The street law programme is designed to train law students to teach high school pupils and others about their legal rights and where they can obtain legal assistance. It explains to people "on the street" how the law affects them in their daily lives. Street law also encourages people to think critically about the legal system and to consider alternative forms of dispute resolution such as mediation, arbitration and negotiation when dealing with conflict. At the same time by sending law students out to schools and communities to teach about the law, the street law programme gives law students a unique insight into the legal needs and aspirations of ordinary people. How street law operates The street law programme originated at the Georgetown University Law Centre in Washington DC in 1972. The first South African programme was established at the University of Natal, Durban in 1986. For a short history of the programme and some sample lessons, see McQuoid-Mason DJ 'Reducing violence in South Africa through "street law": education of citizens' in Kirchoff GF, Kosovksi E and Schneider HJ (eds)

Extractions: Internet Resources for Civic Educators December 1997 by Laura A. Pinhey The Internet, with its unique capabilities for instantaneous global communication, is rapidly becoming a valuable resource for civic educators, both those involved in K-12 citizenship education and those involved in international civic education for democracy. For K-12 teachers, the Internet is a source of classroom tools and resources such as curriculum guides and lesson plans; the full text of the United States Constitution and other pertinent documents as well as those of other nations; and numerous examples of grassroots civic participation in progress in the United States and other established, authentic constitutional democracies, and in fledgling democracies such as those of Eastern Europe. On the international level, numerous government, non-government, academic, private, and grassroots cooperative projects on civic education for democracy are uniting people from all over the world; the Internet enhances and furthers these projects' goals by fostering long-distance communication among project participants and expanding opportunities and resources for topics and activities ranging from comparative study and curriculum planning to grantseeking and networking with other civic educators. The full text of government documents, conference proceedings, seminar and workshop schedules, listservs, websites of grassroots civic organizations, national election results, requests for proposals, on-line databases and library catalogs, photographs, and video and audio files are just a few of the resources available on the Internet for research, networking, or curriculum development by civic educators.

LRE educators strive to develop the active citizens our society requires: those who can understand, live in, and contribute positively to the civic communities to which they belong. LRE explores how the law affects students and how they, in turn, can affect the law (ABA, 1995). Relationship between citizen and society is essential to LRE, which should illustrate significant connections between students and larger communities, such as town, nation, and world (ABA, 1995).
