5-0 out of 5 stars Legends Of The World series continues to entertain!
In The Magic Amber, a poor Korean man and woman befriend an old beggar and, in return, are given a piece of magic amber. The amber, placed in a pot, always fills it with rice. The landlord steals the magic amber away, but in a twist of fate, the amber is unexpectedly returned.

I love these books written and illustrated by Charles Reasoner!Try getting the entire series, and your children won't be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good story about generosity.
This is a story about a poor couple whose generosity is continually repaid to them - first, when they get a magic amber that fills their ricepot and second, when the villagers they've helped keep paying them back even after the couple loses the amber.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...
This is a fabulous book! I read it in second grade and loved it so much that I wanted to know more about the Amber stone so I went to the local library and researched it for a class report.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable lesson for living
A magical retelling of an ancient story in the acclaimed "Legends of the World" series.A poor farmer and his wife are given a piece of magic amber by a mysterious stranger -- a gift that creates food so they won't go hungry. The farmer and his wife generously share their food with the needy, but one day their greedy landlord steals the magic amber. How the amber is returned to the kind farmer teaches an age-old lesson.Beautifully illustrated by award-winning illustrator Charles Reasoner, with fascinating information about Korean history and culture at the back of the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars not historically correct: do not buy this book!
Charles Reasoner is a good example of an ignorant American that knows little or nothing about Korea. His book, "The Magic Amber" is a legend alright, a legend in his own mind. The book is not only historically IN-correct, the illustrations contained are of Chinese with Japanese Kimonos.Come on Charles, you could have asked at least one Korean before going through the trouble of publishing a book that has nothing to do with Koreans. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Hard to find collection
We bought this as a gift and it is a good collection with the Korean and English translation of the tales, exactly what we wanted.Just a word of precaution, they are Korean folk, as in traditional, tales and we find certain stories to have very traditional gender roles - women stay home and the goal is to have kids, etc.But I don't think children will pick up on that unless it's reinforced elsewhere also. All in all, a good product for a bilingual household. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This gorgeous graphic "fairy tale" novel is sure to please! This is a magical tale with a few new twists.
An old Korean farmer and his lovely young wife were very happy together, but unfortunately they were childless. They waited for many years until a very magical thing occurred. . ."finally the woman learned that she was with child."She gave birth to a little girl and the parents were ecstatic. To mark the glorious event the baby's father planted a pear tree and when he was admiring it, he decided the child would be named "Pear Blossom."She was a beautiful, carefree and happy child until the age of thirteen when her mother suddenly passed away. The old man needed someone to help him care for Pear Blossom and he went to a matchmaker.

He not only got a wife, but also a sister for Pear Blossom.Omoni and Violet soon moved in and soon their evil ways began to surface.Omoni was the epitome of the wicked stepmother and Violet, of course, was her mother's daughter.Omoni used to lie awake nights just trying to think of ways to make her stepdaughter's life utterly miserable. She was constantly trying to tear her down.Violet enjoyed calling her names and laughed when Pear Blossom got "down on her hands and knees like a little pig."And so, Pigling became her new name. Her father was too weak to help prevent or even see the cruelty. What on earth would save Pear Blossom from this life of drudgery and misery?

I loved this version of the Cinderella fairy tale. The tale, told in graphic novel style, was mesmerizing to me primarily because of the gorgeous art work. The flow of the story was very easy and the emotions of the characters could be easily ascertained on their faces making this a big help to the reluctant reader.Graphic novels such as this one are generally reserved for the middle school student, but the topic is definitely one for the younger child. The nine to twelve-year-old won't grab for this one, but I certainly wouldn't hesitate to pick up a copy to read with a younger child. This is one of several titles in the "Graphic Myths and Legends" series. In the back of the book is a glossary and pronunciation guide, an index and additional recommended book and website resources. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The story was good at the end
I liked this book the best of the series. In general, I think that this story could have been condensed in three volumes instead of 7. Good idea but the first 4 volumes are too long and, in some parts, not very engaging. The story really matures at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great ending
This is the final volume of the manga, and it delivers a very good ending. The only bad thing is that it lacks a lot of the comedy of the first few volumes. It does provide the past of the main characters, and has a happy end for Misty-Rain and Sirius. If you read the first six, there would be no reason to not read this one. ...
