When the United States entered World War II, it took more than industrial might to transform its tiny army--smaller than even Portugal's--into an overseas fighting force of more than eight and a half million. Peter Schifferle contends that the determination of American army officers to be prepared for the next big war was an essential component in America's ultimate triumph over its adversaries. Crucial to that preparation were the army schools at Fort Leavenworth.

Interwar Army officers, haunted by the bloodshed of World War I's Meuse-Argonne Offensive, fully expected to return to Europe to conclude the "unfinished business" of that conflict, and they prepared well. Schifferle examines for the first time precisely how they accomplished this through a close and illuminating look at the students, faculty, curriculum, and essential methods of instruction at Fort Leavenworth. He describes how the interwar officer corps there translated the experiences of World War I into effective doctrine, engaged in intellectual debate on professional issues, conducted experiments to determine the viability of new concepts, and used military professional education courses to substitute for the experience of commanding properly organized and resourced units.

Schifferle highlights essential elements of war preparation that only the Fort Leavenworth education could provide, including intensive instruction in general staff procedures, hands-on experience with the principles and techniques of combined arms, and the handling of large division-sized formations in combat. This readied army officers for an emerging new era of global warfare and enabled them to develop the leadership decision making they would need to be successful on the battlefield. But Schifferle offers more than a recitation of curriculum development through the skillful interweaving of personal stories about both school experiences and combat operations, collectively recounting the human and professional development of the officer corps from 1918 to 1945.

Well crafted and insightful, Schifferle's meticulously researched study shows how and why the Fort Leavenworth experience was instrumental in producing that impressive contingent of military officers who led the U.S. Army to final victory in World War II. Thorough study
Dr. Schifferle's book on Fort Leavenworth and its Command and General Staff College. Schifferle's thesis is that the CGSC was responsible for the exceptional performance of the U.S. Army during WWII and he makes his argument very well. The United States Army was underfunded and not very large when compared to the armies being organized in Europe and Asia, where it would soon be fighting. But the experienced faculty who came on board following WWI organized the CGSC in a well-thought-out manner and as a result the Army had a large number of trained staff officers and potential commanders to lead the divisions, corps, and armies created to beat the axis. Not necessarily an easy read but certainly an important book.

An Outstanding Work on a Seldom Researched Topic
I was very pleased to see my copy of Dr. Schifferle's work arrive. First, I note that the author has outstanding credentials for this topic.Here, the biographical information is understated for the general reader, but speaks volumes for people who know anything about the School of Advanced Military Studies.Clearly, Dr. Schifferle is an accomplished historian and an expert in his field.Second, I appreciate both the bibliography and footnotes; Iused both to gain insight into the scope and depth of the author's research. For example, I surveyed the sources that he used for the discussion on doctrinal development in the 1920's and found that material to be very interesting, to include the origins of the FM 100-5 manuals most professionals are so familiar with. Third, the text is well written prose with excellent analytical structure and substantive support for his arguments. In essense,I learned a lot about the Army as a "learning institution" in the inter-war years, showing the intellectual growth of officer corps as a whole (as opposed to the "intellectual leaders" that we so frequently read about).This book gave me a deeper appreciation for the relationships between experience (i.e. WWI), a flowering intellectual discourse (i.e. in professional journals), experimentation leading to new theory, resulting in new doctrine disseminated through the school system, and subsequently adjusted by new experience (i.e. WWII).This book clearly demonstrates the value of professional military education, illustrating many important concepts and innovations that reached fruition in WWII.

WAY TOO MANY FOOTNOTES !
My $34.93 book arrived today and I quickly thumbed through its contents.

I have concluded that CERTAIN books should be printed in two editions:
a.) fully annotated for scholars at the full price and
b.)"somewhat" annotated for general readers at a lower price.

The book is 295 pages long. The text consists of 196 pages and there are
57 pages of footnotes ( about 1/4 of the text ). Some of the footnotes are quite
detailed.The entire page 221, for example, expounds on TWO footnotes.Why couldn't some of the longer footnote contents be incorporated into the text ?
This would have made for a better "read".

For all readers' information, the bibliography is 23 pages long and the index is another 20 pages. Although the book was well written and informative, I would
suggest buying a used copy.

For 9-12 year olds?
This book is better for children older than 11 maybe 11-13 because 9 year olds and even my 10 year olds were not able to get into it. It is a good book and is worth reading even if the kids have to wait a few years to fully understand it. Some how books like this are better read aloud by teachers who understand the literature.

A Solid Read!
I enjoyed this return to the World War II era where community spirit was alive and well in spite of a few disgruntled neighbors. I loved 11-year-old Teresa's bold spirit, her special relationship with her older brother, and her ambivalent feelings about Billy, the kid who seemed to purposely alienate all the other kids. We don't see many novels like this anymore, and I loved its Americana flavor with all the old traditions and values.

Wonderful Book
This is a great read for kids and for anyone who remembers World War II on the homefront, no matter what their age. I find it interesting that PW criticizes the book for being too sunny and "Pollyan-ish." It is a sad social commentary that we cannot allow our kids to be happy, to think nice thoughts, to know that there are good, humanitarian people in the world and that not everyone is out to skin you alive. Not every good work of children's lit has to deal with death or betrayal or abuse.

Great War Read
I am a 5th grade girl.I did not think books about war could be this interesting.When I started the book I thought it was moving slowly, but it really picked up and gave a bang at the end.In some ways I could really relate to Teresa.I have older brothers and they give me nicknames too.I would miss them if they went to war.I went back to the map many times while I was reading.I thought the map was a cool idea.I would recomend this book to anyone who likes suspense and emotional stories.

This is a MUST for any library!
I am a retired teacher.I retired early (age 25) to stay home with my first baby when she was born in 1989.We now have three children who love to read.I love children's literature and this book interested me.It interested me because entangled in the pages are history, family, friendship, devotion, loyalty and patriotism.The author had me glued to the pages and I, literally, did not put the book down until I finished it!She made the main character so real and I was cheering her on, feeling her pain, and could remember being a little sister to a big brother whom I loved and adored.My daughter is reading the book now - it is beside her bed.These are the kinds of books that I loved as a child and love passing down to my children.It's a wonderful book.I hope the author is inspired to continue to write more children's books.She has a gift and we are fortunate that she shared her gift with us, the gift of writing. ...
