Buy ANY other book! ANY OTHER BOOK!!!!!!!
This is the first book I've ever returned because I didn't like it.

It's not that I didn't like it. It is incomprehensible. It's completely nonsensical. I cannot get past page 20, because it is totally incoherent.

Chapter 1 is supposed to be about business planning, but is actually about writing and selling information products as a business. I bought this book because I want to start a career counseling business, not information publishing. I also don't want to, as the author suggests, write pet eulogies and decoupage them on plaques.

I do not believe, as the author said, that "people consult a career coach because they want to feel dignified." I think people hire a career coach to find a job.

The second chapter, which is titled "How to Presell..." is actually about how to incorporate and write a business plan. Except for the three pages of chapter 1 which are repeated verbatim.

Seriously. The chapters don't talk about what they promise, the first 20 pages of the book are impossible to follow, the book does NOT (at least not in the first two chapters I struggled through) show how to start a career coaching business, and if this book ever occupied the same room as an editor, I'm the queen of Hawaii.

THREE PAGES COPIED VERBATIM from one chapter to the next!

I understand that this writer has written 61 books. I hope she got an editor for the other 60.

This is the most useless pile of paper I've ever seen. The toilet paper in my bathroom is worth more than this book, and I'm returning it for exactly that reason.

Oh, and the cover, which can't be seen clearly online, has monsters and zombies on it. If I'd known that, I would have judged the book--deservedly--by its cover. It's truly horrifying. ... Read more

Not Worth the Money
I purchased the Kindle version in the hope that this book would have some useful tips for updating my resume to make it timely in the current economic environment (early 2010).Unfortunately what I found was the content of the book is simply a tired re-hash of formats and ideas which have been widely disseminated for at least a decade, if not longer.There is nothing new in this book.To make matters worse, the fact that this book is priced at 70% above the more typical $10 price point for a Kindle book is an absolute outrage.I erroneously believed that perhaps the higher price would bring increased value; it does not!If I could return this book I would do so.

While this book could be useful for a new graduate just entering the workforce it provides nothing useful for an experienced individual.But even for a new graduate there are better books available which are sold at better prices.For example, I also purchased Resume Magic which I would recommend to anyone updating their resume or searching for a new job.

Based upon my limited experience with this single book, I would be suspect of anything offered in the entire "Real Resume" series.

Due to current workload I had not the time I wanted to have to read this book.I paged through the book and from what I saw and read it did ring certain bells in my head.

More comprehensive than other résumé/cover letter books
This book is more comprehensive than other job hunting books in that it explains the basics of job searching, professional résumés, and cover letters very well. It gives some advice on where to search for jobs, networking, and how to send in job applications via electronic and written formats. If you are only going to buy one book to prepare for a job search and the application process, I would recommend this book over several others.

The downside of this book is that it does little to prepare you for the modern inevitability of having to submit your application through a standardized and faceless corporate website. Any advice on formatting your résumé, writing a cover letter, or writing professional contact emails is unnecessary when companies force you to "spray and pray" your application to their non-communicative and poorly staffed HR departments. Nothing is more discouraging than having your perfect cover letter and résumé butchered by having to fill in standardized forms on the web.

This book was very helpful.It has a lot of examples of cover letters and resumes.Also, it has comments from actual hiring managers and some contradict each other.That is helpful because it shows that not all HR departments feel the same way about resumes and the key is to appeal to as many as you can.
