5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
You don't have to have an MBA to benefit from reading this book. This book does a great job of teaching how to look at every interview question as an opportunity to sell yourself. I would recommend this book to anyone that is on the job market. It will assist you in figuring out what you are good at and how those traits match the requirements of the job you are going to interview for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jekyll and Hyde of a book
Am already an MBA,so I don't really need to "interview like one", but was gathering info as a precursor to a new job search. The info in this book is average in that some is very good, and some is very bad, hence the middle road grade. The first half of the book I found basically good. The author should have stopped there. However they elected to go on and give answers to the top 100 "tough" questions asked in interviews.

Will save you having to plod through those 100 or so pages. The questions are not "tough", but rather basic.
Your responses to any of them should match this criteria:
Tell them things that show you are a good fit for the job.
Be positive not negative.
Show that you have knowledge about the company, its culture, and its needs and how you could be an asset to them.
Done.

Unfortunately, we get hammered with the same message over and over for a hundred pages worth, telling no more than what I just did in a paragraph. To make it worse, most of the answers given, are repeated versions, of a previous question, cut and pasted into the next question with only a word or two revised. For example, What makes you a good fit for this company, and what makes you a good fit for this position have essentially identical answers with only "company", and "position" changed. Its not only boring, but it is lazy writing. Do you really want to wade through that? Personally I found Barron's books on interviewing better overall, you might want to check those out.

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK book
The examples given in the book use written language not spoken, making it hard as a reference. Certain content is redundant. Didn't get much from this book. It's better to find info. from website.

3-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I got a thousand times better tips on a 2 buck kindle book Interview tips from a chronic job hopper than I did this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Several Books
This book helped me secure a great job.I read five or six books on the same subject and this one by far was the best.It gives you the nuts and bolts of what you need to do.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I need this on my bookshelf
I got this book and many similar books from the library to prepare for my first interview in over 12 years. I ended up bringing all the other books back and extending this library book to its limit... I just didn't want to give it up.

Everything I needed to know from how to prepare, how to dress, to examples of thank you letters, to salary negotiation, this has been my interview companion all the way. The other books were bigger and seemed to be more comprehensive in the beginning, but they just kept going around in circles or asking you to do stupid and very time-consuming exercises to prepare for an interview. This meant you needed to start reading the the other books months in advance. This book just seemed far clearer and to the point than all the others, good if you can begin preparing one or two weeks in advance, but if not, it gives you all the important information summed up in just a few short chapters. I know I'd want to refer to it over and over again whenever my job situation changes and it's time to return this book to the library, so I'm buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Put Your Best Foot Forward
Interviewing potential employees feels like a cross between a treasure hunt and a business transaction. The boss is looking for someone with energy, enthusiasm, job skills, and who fits with the current team. Far too many candidates have no idea of the image they project.Slumped in a chair while mumbling answers is not likely to impress an employer. ... Read more

Product Description
A witty, friendly, unexpected job hunter's bible that finally answers the real questions. Yes, if you're wedded to your nose ring, wear it to the interview. No, you shouldn't be e-mailing out hundreds of résumés. Writing with enormous authority and a compelling, lively voice, Ellen Reeves brings together her lifetime of experience of hiring, counseling, and résumé-doctoring into an essential guide for young job seekers.

Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview? takes readers step-by-step through a process that was always tough, but is today especially challenging. Begin the search with a professional mind-set—get organized, and set yourself up with business cards, a respectable e-mail address, and a working cell phone. The importance of networking and the rule of three—try to make three e-mails or phone calls a day, but never more than that. The "elevator speech"—hone your pitch to the length of an elevator ride and be prepared to use it at the most unexpected times. The art of writing cringe-free cover letters and killer résumés—from timelines, hooks, and grammatical do's and don'ts to why you should never use the phrase "References available upon request," never include your GPA, and never, ever make a typo. How to dress for an interview, including why to put on your business clothes when interviewing at home, over the phone. Things to be honest about: citizenship and past salary range. And things not to say: "I want this job because I need health insurance."

Then once you're in, how to negotiate salary, what to expect in a review, and basic first job common sense: take initiative, be humble and helpful, never use your boss as a confidant, and always say "I'll find out" instead of "I don’t know." Now you're on your way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful purchase
I am currently unemployed, and need all the help I can get in obtaining a new job.The book, "Can I Wear My Nosering to an Interview?" not only answered perrinent questions, but gave interviewing tips that proved very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Course Textbook
I'm a college professor and teach a course that involves career exploration and helps equip students with job search and acquisition skills. This is a great text that supplements various in-class exercises such as cover letter and resume writing, job search techniques, practice interviewing skills, evaluating job offers, and how to deport oneself in a new job. It's a great platform from which to launch classroom discussion because it's written in a straightforward, humorous style.I highly recommend it as a quick and helpful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST BUY!
I bought a ton of "find a job" books right out of college and this one was by far the most helpful. Not only was it entertaining to read, I learned more things from this book than I probably did in college, haha. There are both good and bad examples of cover letters, resumes, resume formats, etc. There is probably no aspect of this book that I thought was unhelpful or unneeded. I basically followed this book to the letter and I got a salaried job, in my studied field, in New York City, during this recession, after only a month of job-hunting. That should say something about the quality of this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gifted to 2 newly graduating college students
As a graduation present this was perfect.I had conversations with two different 20-somethings who were about to launch job searches. They have reported back that they have used various suggestions and information from the book.I was prompted to buy the book because one of the two literally thought there was no problem wearing her nose ring to an interview at a conservative government office job interview. She changed her mind about the nose ring, went to the interview without it.Good move. They offered her the job, but she declined deciding not to work in such a stuffy atmosphere. But the book at least put her on notice that such things can have an effect on how people view you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landing the Job and A Higher Salary Made Possible
I read this book in anticipation of hearing Ellen lecture about her book and finding a place in the job market.Little did I know that not only would this book be a key tool in securing a job, it also gave me the courage to negotiate the salary that was being offered up by 7%; needless to say in a recession and the lack of courage I thought I had in myself this is nothing short of a miracle.

One important element in this book is self-confidence which is easier to talk about than being able to portray to a stranger in a high pressure situation. But what CAN I WEAR MY NOSE RING...accomplishes is to rationally break down everything you need to know into bite-sized pieces so that everything is digestible from the get-go, so it when it comes to actually applying that knowledge, you're more prepared for a job interview (or any tense situation really) than you could possibly imagine.

TRUE STORY: After several rounds of job interviews, I received a phone call while sitting in a Starbucks from a lovely woman in Human Resources offering me the position. The only thing I can recall was being stunned--she kept talking but I didn't hear a word she said after "We'd like to offer you the position".It was between complete excitement and awe that I found myself thinking, "Okay, what's the next step?"In Ellen's book she says to graciously thank the person who offers you the job and politely ask them if they may send you an email that in detail, outlines the entire offer and includes a salary offer, requirements of the position and benefits. You're asking for this information because you need time to consider the offer. After I said this, the human resource rep was stunned for a moment, surprised that I had even thought of this, and said absolutely.

The next morning after I had thoroughly gone over the email I called her back and politely went through the benefits and requirements list agreeing with practically everything. When I came to the part about the salary, I reminded them of the extensive experience on my resume and explained that I had done my research and in the industry I found the median salary to be X (which was actually $4,000 more than they were offering me, and $2,000 more than I believed I would get). When she replied back saying that 92% of people in my entry-level position make X, I instantly deduced that meant 8% of people in my position make MORE than X.With that nugget of courage I was able to offer a term of X +7% more than they originally offered. She had to discuss this with the department, which made me nervous but when she called me later that day to say they were able to offer me the salary we had discussed, I was thrilled.I accepted the position and I now have a higher foundation salary.

In short: This book is necessary for anyone who has ever considered a career or who is looking for a new one. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle - No working Table of Contents
This looked like a great book based on the reviews - warning to Kindle users - it does not have a working Table of Contents, which, for a book like this - makes it almost useless. - I am returning for that reason.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read and advise
This book is a great read to brush up on what to expect for an IT interview. If you have been on the job for a while and forgotten what you might encounter on an interview, this should help you out. If you are a newbie grad this will also help you. The last 2 IT jobs I landed were because this book helped me. It didn't hold my hand through the process, but there were some tidbits that did help me. For a few bucks, it was well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ace the IT Interview
This book is great for finding out how to get your resume noticed, how to write thank you notes, make cold calls, all the things I have trouble doing.I was disappointed that the book didn't have any questions to review for UNIX/Open Source professionals.Worth the money even if you aren't a software developer or supporting any Microsoft platforms because of the excellent job hunting advice most techies have a hard time figuring out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
Great guide. My instructor uses it for our class.Easy to read and has great suggestions.Sample questions for typical IT interviews and gives hints on how to approach an interview.I recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book for interview pointers
This is a good book for anyone seeking job in IT profession. Most of the topics mentioned are relavent to present day. The reader should not be 100% condidence on everything mentioned in this book. Networking with other professionals would help to reduce that risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource
This book was a good resource to prep myself for some upcoming interviews. This book does a great job of help you plan ahead about how you should sell yourself and bring attention to your traits that best fit with the position you are interviewing for. I have loaned this book out several times and would recommend it for anyone who is on the search for a job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from an Engineering Perspective
I consider "The Perfect Interview" as a great reference text while job searching specifically in the context of the interview process. I have found that the text does an excellent job of: focusing interviewee's job search; preparing interviewees for the interviews, and explaining the interview context such that the interviewee would be more successful in the interview process. I found that even though this text is over ten years old, the book is written on a strong framework that I believe is helpful to any entry professional job seeker.

The strongest point of the text in my opinion is the skill building exercises, which help assist the interviewee highlight their best attributes to interviewers. Improvement that I would like to see in a revision (or sequel) of the text would be that the text should elaborate more on methods of obtaining interviews (chapters 2 & 3) and electronic methods of optimizing a job search.

5-0 out of 5 stars This time tested book delivers.
Many candidates mistakenly think that if they only get the interview their personality and speaking skills will seal the deal.As a result, they do not practice or put their best foot forward. The book is a great tool for the experienced executive, inside candidate or new graduate - everyone benefits from evaluating their unique fit for a postion using the structure and advice set forth by Drake. There is nothing like taping yourself answering the 10 most common questions to appreciate your opportunity to clarify your value proposition.

I have used this book personally and given it to my friends and colleagues - who have used it.I know of no one who has used this book and not been offered the job.

4-0 out of 5 stars very good interview prep

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are concerned about answering interview questions - excellent
This book is precisely what the title says and more. It has great questions to help prepare and examples as well. Going through the questions section and being able to answer aloud would be helpful presentation for most applicants. The book takes competency categories one by one and gives solid answers to build from. Also has some really nice resume examples to work from.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can tell when an author is an expert
201 Knockout Answers is one of those books that every parent should buy for their child who is trying to enter the workforce. It's a book that seasoned veterans, especially in this economy, should tuck into their briefcase and study. And finally, it's an excellent book for employers to use in reverse, which is what I do.I'm using it for our interviewing process, and I also plan to provide a copy for any employees who might leave us.

No matter what type of job a person might be seeking, the questions, obstacles, actions, and results Matias lists are something that every worker will face at some point in their life. She is obviously an expert in the field. The book doesn't read like something a good writer simply researched.Rather, the ample nuggets provided seem fueled by years of expertise in the field of interviewing and human resources.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information inside, please ignore the unfriendly cover
This book helped me prepare for my job interviews several years ago. I got the 4th edition. I really liked it because it was on of the only books I found that was positive about the subject matter at the time. I am sure though it's in it's 6th or 7th edition the 'feel' of the material hasn't changed. There may be small additions or edits, but the main message and presentation style would remain the same. I am a bit surprised the cover of the book has changed so dramatically. I have the 4th edition which looks like it has a sky background (Blue with patches of lighter blue/white (cloud-looking forms). The cover of the book was another thing that really attracted me because it looked cool, inviting and less-threatening that the others. This new cover with red, black and white looks a little scary, not so personable and quite frankly if I had seen this edition in the bookstore (as i had seen the 4th in the bookstore) I would not even pick it up because the cover just doesn't look inviting. It's really too bad the cover had to be changed. (It may prevent people from even picking it up and there's really good information inside.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book.
What you can expect from this book is not great answers to tough interview questions, but it sure to make you think on how to answer them. Good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, but too scarey
While the book does deal with real issues in interviewing for a job, I think it goes too far in asking for a ridiculous level of pandering to the company and interviewer. It is good in making you think about what the interview question is really aimed at uncovering - rather than just blathering along about the apparent intent.Useful, but probably so scarey that it makes you want to just forget the whole job search thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than advice, this book provides a roadmap
As a recruiter I would recommend this book to any candidate who needed advice on how to be interviewed.

101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions, provides a detailed, step-by-step process that any candidate, experienced or novice, can use to prepare for an interview.Candidates are told to prepare a series of worksheets documenting their experience, and formulate answers to predictable but challenging questions such as "Tell me about yourself," as well as the dreaded "What would you change about yourself?" The idea is to prepare the best possible response, not as a way to fake it, but as a way to avoid mistakes when one is on the spot. For each question, the book contains an example of a good response, and pinpoints the many areas that might trip up a job seeker .

Unlike many books for job seekers, this one provides solutions for experienced and inexperienced candidates. The evaluation technique goes beyond the vague common sense advice provided by most websites.(Be on time, be positive, use spell-check.tell them your greatest fault is that you work too hard...)

The book includes good information on phone screens.Given the large number of resumes that companies receive, phone screens are a routine step in the process. This book gives the experienced candidate a way to prepare for a phone interview where things like eye contact, are not possible.

Fry advises candidates to be honest, and to present themselves in the best possible way. What could be better than that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great product!!
I used to be a really bad interviewee. I used to be shy, nervous and I never knew quite what to say. After I read this book, I gave two interviews and got offers from both companies. This is a really good, simple, common sense based book. You may not have too many "Aha!" moments when you read it; but when you are done, it actually does change the mindset and attitude that you take into your interview. I absolutely recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Got the job!
I bought this book because after spending five years home with my children, I felt that I had lost my edge; anxiety engulfed me and the thought of being interviewed just made me cringe. This book allowed me to be properly prepared so that I sounded not only intelligent but relaxed, as well. I was asked many similar questions at my interview that I prepared for from the book and I was able to use many of my answers for different questions; sort of a mix and match usage. In my 15 years in the work force I've never had an interview go so well. With the job market as tight as it is, yes even for teachers, I had one interview this summer, but I aced it. I just started my new job and couldn't be happier. Thank God for this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
This book helped me land my dream job. Before buying this book, I had a few interviews and left feeling great about them every time, but never got any follow-up calls. While reading this book, I realized I'd been doing everything wrong, from the way I was dressing for my interviews to the way I answered the questions.Almost every single question I've ever been asked in an interview was in this book. It's a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource For The Basics
While this book is 8 years old (copyright 2002), Teacher Interviews: How to Get Them and How to Get Hired is a superb resource for how to create effective cover letters, resumes, and how to answer some very common, very challenging interview questions. The book also includes advice on how to create a teaching portfolio and how to handle job offers. I received compliments by school district administrators on the resume I crafted using the advice in this book. I also felt more confident answering interview questions after reviewing what kinds of things I should include in my responses. I do believe this book helped me receive the position I have today and I'd recommend it to any teacher-to-be frustrated at sending their credentials out to numerous school districts only to never get that phone call for an interview.

The majority of the book discusses answers to commonly asked interview questions. These questions are broken down into sections, from "General Questions," to subject-specific questions (English Interview Questions, Social Studies questions, etc.), to grade-specific questions (elementary, middle, and high school). The book poses the question, breaks down the question to show you what interviewers are looking for you to demonstrate in your answer (for example, that you know how to differentiate instruction), gives you possible ways of answering, and sometimes gives you a sample answer. At the end of each question, there's a helpful bullet list of things you should think about/include in your answer.

After that, there's a chapter on how to handle your offer. Somehow, this chapter felt premature because in my area, school districts make candidates go through multiple rounds of interviews and even perform demonstration lessons. It would have been nice to have had an additional chapter on the difference between first and second rounds of interviews, how the questions differ, and how to handle demonstration lessons. Nonetheless, this last chapter is fitting and I've used some of the advice in it. This chapter has sound advice for turning down jobs you don't want or how to handle two offers or whether to hold out for an undecided (but your preferred) school district.

Overall, I'd say this is a pretty thorough, helpful book to get your foot in the door. The cover letter and resume advice is spot on. If anything, you will have a better idea of what you'll be asked in an interview and have some idea how to answer. Any preparation at all will help you get a teaching position. I personally believe this is one of the best books out there for teacher-job-seekers. Good luck to you!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me get hired
I ordered this book the day I got a call asking me to come and interview for an elementary teaching job. I only had a few days to read it, but that was plenty of time for me to familiarize myself with the questions and formulate my own answers based on the author's suggested ones. I can't comment on the helpfulness of the author's suggestions about resumes and cover letters because I didn't use them, but every one of the questions I was asked in my interview was in the book in some form. I felt very well prepared, and I could tell during the interview that my responses were well recieved from the expressions on the faces of the interview committee. Two days after the interview the prinicpal called and offered me the job. I really feel that this book helped me immensely in preparing me for this interview. In this economy you might only get one shot, and this book will give you the best possible chance at getting a job.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will surely be ahead of the rest
I loved this book. After reading it and jotting down ideas I feel very empowered. Get it! You will not regret it!

UPDATE 6/15/09:After 2 unsuccessful interviews (thinking I was prepared), I decided to buy this book. After reading it, I was able to see what I had been doing wrong, simply unprepared.I went to my 1st interview (after reading the book), and did okay. I nailed the second interview where I was offered the position a few days later.Yet, I went to a third interview and did an amazing job. This book is a must have. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good preparation book
This book does help you to gain a job. It has successfully helped me with the skills necessary to get a number of jobs the last two years including the two part-time jobs I am working now (that I started in March and April). This book does help round out your career management library.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best interview books ever
I found this to be one of the best interview books I have ever used. It not only offers ways to answer interview questions, it also provides examples of typical answers and why they are wrong. It is mostly geared for people involved in business fields, but it covers many questions that are asked in any interview.

3-0 out of 5 stars this power makes the lights dim, but at least they light
Power interviews has been valuable to me in my preparations for interviewing.

As I'm leaving the military at age 26, I've never actually experienced a real job interview.I feel at least somewhat prepared, after seeing the example questions in the book.

First is a general "yay jobs" and "yay you" section-- not so great.

About half of the rest of the book is dedicated to questions. It's a good opportunity to consider the questions you have never considered, like "what's more important, salary or recognition."In the "one pager" format, the author then summarizes what the question means, offers a sample "killer answer" (very confusing at first, because to me, a killer answer is a great one...authors mean "kill your chances."), a critique of that killer answer, and thena "winner answer."The price of the book, particularly used, is probably worth that section alone.

Next follows a "megatrends" kind of analysis- ho hum, followed with more "yay you" figuring out how to leverage your absolute greatness to the snug fit of a real job with limitations.

Recommended to me by a headhunter- worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good questions with excellent answers
There are many books on how to improve your interview technique in the market, and choosing a good one can prove to be a daunting task. Most books have good strategies and tips, and some also have good questions that are likely to come up and are worth preparing for beforehand. Few however have sample answers. The reason I've rated this book so highly is because with each question it provides two answers: a weak one and a strong one and a critique of each. That does not mean that you can just memorize the book and ace an interview, but it certainly explains what an interviewer is looking for when he asks a certain question and gives an excellent structure around which to create your own answers based on your own work history and experiences. It definitely increases your chances of success. The one aspect it does not cover in depth is which questions to ask the interviewer. If you feel you need help in that area I'd suggest "201 best questions to ask on your interview" by John Kador.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just an okay book
Nothing exciting about this book.May be a good bed time reader if you are in the process of looking for jobs [aren't we all??? :-)].Some common sense topics restated. But neatly written book.No complaints on that. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a must read! It is the first and the original book of quantitative questions from finance job interviews. Painstakingly revised over 15 years and 12 editions, Heard on The Street has been shaped by feedback from many hundreds of readers. With 50,000 copies in print (late 2009), its readership is unmatched by any competing book. The revised 12th edition contains over 175 quantitative questions collected from actual job interviews in investment banking, investment management, and options trading. The interviewers use the same questions year-after-year, and here they are with detailed solutions! This edition also includes over 125 non-quantitative actual interview questions, giving a total of more than 300 actual finance job interview questions. There is also a revised section on interview technique based on Dr. Crack's experiences interviewing candidates and also based on feedback from interviewers worldwide. The quant questions cover pure quant/logic, financial economics, derivatives, and statistics. They come from all types of interviews (corporate finance, sales and trading, quant research, etc.), and from all levels of interviews (undergraduate, MS, MBA, PhD).The first seven editions of Heard on the Street contained an appendix on option pricing. That appendix was carved out as a standalone book in 2004, and it is now available in its revised second edition published April 2009: "Basic Black-Scholes" ISBN=0970055242. Dr. Crack has a PhD from MIT. He has won many teaching awards, and has publications in the top academic, practitioner, and teaching journals in finance. He has degrees/diplomas in Mathematics/Statistics, Finance, Financial Economics and Accounting/Finance. Dr. Crack taught at the university level for over 20 years including four years as a front line teaching assistant for MBA students at MIT. He has worked as an independent consultant to the New York Stock Exchange, and his most recent practitioner job was as the head of a quantitative active equity research team at what was the world's largest institutional money manager. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Bad and unorganized
I work in banking and knew many tech questions before buying this book. With this book I didn't learn any new questions that can actually be used - they are far but really far from reality. Worst purchase ever

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Ever for Wall Street Interviews
I got a masters degree in financial engineering, I definitely learnt a lot there but it was not enough to tackle wall street job interviews. I practiced on "Heard On The Street" and this book has been of tremendous help. Many of the questions that I have been asked were in this book. And it also helped me to answer other questions that were not in the book - the reason is because you will be fluent with the mechanics that you need to answer interview questions. I am recommending it to everyone looking for a quantitatively (slightly or strongly) oriented job in wall street. It definitely helped me to get some offers this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential preparation for finance interviews
This is a must for people heading to trading firms, banks, or other financial service firms for interviews. These firms typically scout for a few skill sets. One is general brainpower, as hard as that is to measure. Another is the more difficult math in finance, derivatives pricing. This book covers both in a quick and easy format to let you see where you stand. Moreover, if you can master the material in the book then you will be ready for the majority of an entry-level interview.

The derivatives questions cover "plain vanilla" options pricing and some basic understanding of the principles behind the formulas. Most firms want to see that you know the terms in the Black-Scholes equation and how options prices depend on things.

The earlier part of the book I find even more impressive. It's a nearly comprehensive list of the brain-teasers you get in this process. That's where the employer is trying to measure general brainpower. Of course, a brain-teaser you haven't seen before will give you pause and maybe elude you in the stress of an interview. But after reading this book the answers could be at the ready. The set of brain-teasers through history is actually very small. That is after distilling all the variations on them such as whether you are weighing coins or cannonballs and such. And that set of puzzles, questions designed to test basic reasoning and logic, without depending on formal math, is well covered in this book. In fact, in many interviews I have only encountered one single brain-teaser that is not in this book (and it's not a very good one either).

Finally Mr. Crack inserts notes on the culture of banks which might scare or excite the prospective employee. This book is both good orientation and preparation for starting a career in finance.

It is still relevant and helpful ten years later. That said, there is one area this book totally misses (because of what's happened in the past ten years). That is programming questions. Especially in the past couple of years most interviews will look for somesoftware development skill on top of the general brainpower and command of financial derivatives. Tests on C++ or OOP are common these days. For that material you have to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just right
Bought this for my son, who was in the process of interviewing for an internship in investment banking. He got an offer from a prestigious Wall Street firm.Coincidence?Or was it this book?Either way, everybody here is very happy with my purchase!

3-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT an i-banker interview book- for quants only
I'm in financial engineering so this book is reasonably useful if you are interviewing for a job as a quant, quantitative strategist or quantitative trader. However, this book purports (explicitly) to be an interview guide for "Investment Banking" jobs.I suppose that Timothy Falcon Crack doesn't know what investment bankers do, but must i-bankers I know (and I know many) work at raising capital either through debt or equity or some hybrid.Only in the case of securitization jobs would an i-banker be expected to know much of these questions. Many of the questions relate purely to derivatives, which an i-banker who will be spending the next 5 years valuing companies on spreadsheets will not be expected to know at the level of the questioning.Other questions are so absurdly quantitative that there is no way anyone applying for a job in the capital markets division of an i-bank would mean that you would get such a question.

This book is useful for quants - but it is NOT for investment bankers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I appreciated how this book has prepared me for interviewing. I am pretty comfortable with answering questions, but asking questions was pretty difficult for me. I read this book and wrote down about ten questions to ask. I have gone on many interviews in the last several weeks. Every time I ask a question, the first response I get is "That is an excellent question."I have gained more confidence interviewing because I know that whomever I ask from Hiring Managers to HR to Executive Directors to Unit Managers, I am asking intelligent questions that are getting me called back for second interviews. So I am making the cut. When hundreds of people apply, and there are only five openings, and you make the final cut, the book has definitely helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars I nailed it!
I've been in "transition" for the last 8 months.Prior to this, the last time I had a formal interview was more than 13 years ago.Although I've worked in a technology related field for the past 13 years, I started my job search process pretty much following the same process I used in the past except I added my resume to Career Builder and Monster.

After 4 months with minimal interest from local employers, I finally got the hint and realized I was doing something terribly wrong. So I began buying current books on the subject, attending online and local workshops, researching the process online, and talking to others who are going thourhg this too.I gathered everything I could on job searching, resume writing, interviewing, and networking and began applying ALL their recomnmendations and tips.

This book was one of several great resources I found. It arrived 4 days before two interviews I had scheduled.I spent the day after it arrived reading it cover to cover. The next day I went through it again, highlighting key questions and dog-earing tons of pages. Then I created two Word documents, one for each interview and began writing down the question I wanted to ask at each interview. And following the advice of this book I took these papers to the interviews, pulled them out when it was my turn to ask the questions, and went through them all. Both interviewers were impressed by my organization, by the number, and by the types of questions I asked.I left knowing I'd made a good impression at both interview.Sure enough, I was called back for 2nd and 3rd interview at both companies.I've since recieved and offer from one, and the second company is due to make their decision this coming week.

Who knows...maybe after months of little to no interest, I may finally have two offers to choose from. While this book is not the only resource I used to help me get to this point, it did play a key role.I would highly recommend it to anyone who isn't well versed and confident in asking questions in an interview. It will give you great insight and help you prepare to knock their socks off!

1-0 out of 5 stars FAKE REVIEWS - at least the first 6 or so
The first several reviews were written within a couple days apart - certainly raises a suspicion. I don't have time to figure out if the rest of the glowing reviews are fake, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!Impresses potential employers, etc.
I read this book along with "Business Etiquette" before an internship interview and it really impressed my potential employer.Needless to say I was given the job and I am a Finance Intern. This book exemplifies to the potential employer that you take the initiative, research the company, and are really interested in working for that company. The book allows you to ask questions that give you insight into the "inside workings" of the company, etc.It is a must have for any interviewee.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid, thought-provoking, sure to help...
This book is a solid buy for anyone new to the art of interviewing. I found myself in the middle of a career change (by choice) from the military to the civilian world, so I was totally unfamiliar with most of the finer points of the interview cycle. This book was on my "to read" list in preparation for my transition, but I waited until about one week before my first interviews to read through it--and my only regret is that I did not read it earlier!

The book is clearly organized, well worded, and easy to apply to almost any interview. One word of caution--this book does seem to cater more to those interviewing for management or mid-level positions. If you do find yourself in this position, then get this book! Even if you do not read it page-by-page, simply skimming through the topics will generate tons of ideas for good questions to ask. Just be sure to make them your own, and don't use this book as a "script" for the interview.

I agree 100% with the author's assessment that the majority of the interview occurs once it is opened up to YOU for your questions! Solid buy for anyone looking to better their chances in their next management interview. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and easy reading
I found the general-purpose book concise and easy to read.It is well written and divided into relavent chapters with tips, question/answers scenarios, checklists. The book may seem simple but job hunting should not be a rocket science. It helps you get the important and basic things done correctly, and then your natural talent and personality should carry you the rest of the way.
It is VERY helpful specially when you are in the high-stress period of interviewing.Good chapters on preparing for the interviews and then following up.
Ive looked through many books and found this one to be the best if you are only looking for one book.If you have been job-hunting for over a year, you should find a specialized book relavent to your field of expertise, or consider changing your career.
I give this book partial credit for helping me find my current job!
I used the 2001 edition to find a job in 2006.I was offered the job within a week.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book!
I went on a cruise and took this book with me, knowing that I had an interview two days after I returned home.Where I work, we use an interview panel and it's a very intimidating.I studied the entire book while I was gone, and felt prepared when I returned home.

While I was in the "hot seat," the questions triggered responses suggested in the book that I wouldn't have thought of on my own.I walked out of the interview feeling that I had nailed it, unlike previous interviews for various positions within the company.I was offered the job the next day.

Four of my friends read the book and also have new jobs. The book really puts you in the right frame of mind to answer questions that might surprise you and leave you fumbling for the right words. The book is easy to read, but more importantly, it makes you think of how you would respond ahead of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book for somebody who is looking for the first job. It mentions every detail about things that we should prepare for the first interview, and the questions that will be asked.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too simple to be taken seriously
To begin with, I must say that this book took too long to get to the meat and potatoes of the interview...the interview questions and possible responses to these questions. It drags the reader through over 100 pages of meaningless common sense issues that any high school student already knows based on the experiences they have had with their first job. Some examples of dribble...I'm sorry, words of wisdom... from these initial pages include 10 Ways to Win an Interview: 1. Be Prepared, 2. Dress Appropriately, 3. Be Confident, 4. Make Eye Contact, 5. Show Your Enthusiasm, 6. Know the Position, 7. Know the Industry, 8. Know the Company, 9. Practice, 10. Follow Up; and 10 Ways Not to Win an Interview: 1. Arrive Late, 2. Appear Bored, 3. Forget to Do Your Research, 4. Speak in a Long-winded Manner, 5. Speak in Too Brief a Manner, 6. Speak in a Negative Manner, 7. Talk about Money, 8. Appear Conceited, 9. Share Unrealistic Goals, 10. Appear Unkempt. "Wow thanks Mr. Wizard is there anything else I should know?" What kind of horse sense dribble is that? Do I need a book to tell me this? It is the readers life that is being robbed by wasting a single second reading this garbage.

The final section of the book, does pick up the slack a little bit by delving deeper into the interview questions and actually sounds intelligent when asking and answering the questions...at least when answering in the affirmative. The questions are answered with sample examples of how you should and should not respond and a general explanation of the question. As I mentioned, the affirmative answers are good and the description of the questions are good, but the negative answer are down right embarrassing due to the fact that they are so ridiculous. Here is one of my favorites: "If you were allowed to run the company, what would you do differently?" Recommended answer: "I might investigate whether to sell off the light-manufacturing business and start an aggressive supplier-relations program." Non-recommended answer: "I would make the company more like a school. We would have a three-month summer vacation and catered lunch every day. I would make Friday game day where - instead of working - everyone would be allowed to play games within their department." Wow! Thanks for telling me I shouldn't say that, cause that was on my list of possible responses! What kind of response is that? A response that belongs in a joke book. And that is not any exaggeration either. It's on pg. 181 if you want to look it up. And that is a very common set of responses for all of the questions in the book, the affirmative answer is smart and the negative answer is stupid and flippant.

I give this two stars on not one, because the positive answers to the interview questions had valuable advice offered in them and the explanations behind the questions were solidly stated. But I strongly advise not throwing money away to buy this book. Go to the library and check it out if you must read it; that's what I did and am sleeping pretty well at night because of it. ...
