5-0 out of 5 stars Quick!
Good quick ship .. .couldn't beat the price. Required for a class and did not want to purchase the book new as it was an ok book, but an assignment that wasted my time. Trust shipper.

1-0 out of 5 stars outdated -- first published in 1983!
This book seems written for the previous generation of job seekers. It was first published in 1983, 26 years ago!No wonder it seems so old fashioned. If you talk the way he suggests you talk in an interview in 2009, people will think you are a robot.

5-0 out of 5 stars It got me the job
I picked up this book randomly in 2004 when I was applying for a new job. I credit it for landing me the position. I can't understand the reviewer who found it completely useless. Did they even read it? Some of the tips are dynamite if you use them, but I can see in a way how some readers would overlook them because they seem so simple. I have given away my copy to a friend and only yesterday recommended the book again to another friend. That's why I find myself once again on Amazon. Oh, and by the way, the number one tip from this book is that you must send a correctly worded letter to your interviewer after the interview. You would be amazed how few people do that. Remember, you are in a competition when you are going for a job. This book has the small pieces of advice to set you apart from the competition. It worked for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Read... Will Get you atleast a second interview!
After thumbing through this book I learned more in a few hours than I have in the last 6 months. Like previous reviews have stated its straight forward and to the point. There are a few do's and dont's that are common sense, but you must make that call for yourself. There are also a few suggestions the author made that I feel were slightly inappropriate for certain interviewing situations. If you are an individual with sound mind and judgment then this book will be your guiding light through the oh so dark tunnel of job hunting!!! Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a keeper
I liked this book because it gives well rounded view of what the interview process is like.Author tells you how to dress, groom and accessorize, prepare objective, make well thought out resume and smart cover letter. You will be thought on how to research the company, prepare for the interview, ask quesitons during the interview and finish with really smart follow up and thank you letter.Negotiation techniques and acceptance letter and great part of the process. Many reference books mentioned here are probably worth reading and I just may do that next. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interview book Review
There is a fairly comprehensive list of questions that this book covers, this will help in an interview. There are good tips for job hunting too, but most of it is common sense stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got the dream job
This is an excellent book for military retirees and others who have not interviewed for jobs in recent times. Most important is how it walks you through thinking out the process of what you want and need.

3-0 out of 5 stars The first book was much, much better.
If you have already read the first book "Best Answers...", and you read it carefully, you are not likely to find the sequel to be of the same value. I noticed the second book has a co-author, and you can feel it from the text. The new 201 questions are quite plain and are not as interesting or challenging as the first 201 in the first book.

There is a lot in the text that is just common knowledge. I also found some questionable advices. Chapter 2 "how to get interviews" tells you to find phone numbers of line managers and call them directly asking for an interview. If you are a professional with experience seeking for a senior position, I doubt you would be hired this way. I think it shows disrespect to the managers' busy schedule.

Chapters 6 and 7 are trying to give you some basics on how to prepare for an interview. You can find information on it of about the same quality in almost every interviewing book. There are also other books that are doing it better.

Overall, an OK book (I've seen worse), but don't expect it to be as thrilling as the first one. Oh, well... That's pretty typical for a sequel.

You can also read my review for the first book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
This comprehensive, smart book gives you the basics on how to get a job interview, perform well at the interview, end the interview and even negotiate the terms of your benefits if you're hired. The authors raise and provide answers to several hundred questions - some of them painfully obvious, but some of them pretty tough, like "Why do you have that felony conviction?" We from getAbstract have the 202nd question: If you're applying for a job, why haven't you already read this? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable and Practical Advice for Job Seekers
I happened upon this book at the public library a couple days before a big interview this summer.Although I'd been researching articles on the web about interviewing skills during my job search process, I was somewhat caught off guard by the call to come in to interview with a couple days' notice. This book was a big help.It not only helped me figure out which questions to ask as well as which questions to anticipate, it answered questions concerning recent changes in etiquette related to interviews. For example, the day before my big interview I attended a local business professionals networking event where a panel of MBA advisors and consultants talked about the impact of multiple technologies on the job search process.I asked them, "What's the appropriate way to send a thank you note after an interview?By email, a handwritten note, etc?"Their answer was the same as was in this book: email your thank you note and also mail a hardcopy within 24 hours of the interview.I am thankful to both the panel and this book for helping me make a good impression before, during, and after the interview. And I'm happy to say, I got the job.

5-0 out of 5 stars You want the job? - Get this book!
I was lucky enough to pick this book up before I interviewed for my current job and I am so glad that I did.The book is easy to read and presents great ideas. There are work-book type pages that force you to really think about all your strengths and helps you sum them up in creative ways. After reading this book I really felt confident about the whole interview process as well.Even if you are not preparing for a "next-day job interview" this book is a must have for anybody considering a career change.Once you use the book to write out all your strengths, job experiences, etc. the next time you have an interview you need only skim the book for 20-30 minutes and you are completely prepared. If you want to have an edge on the competition, wow your interviewers, and get the job, buy this little book now.You won't regret it, I promise. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Conducting the UNIX Job Interview: IT Manager Guide with UNIX Interview Questions (IT Job Interview series)
I bought this book because I get job interview anxiety and several interviews coming up.The book I really wanted on Amazon for IT UNIX technical interviews was backordered. So I orderd this book instead and used the book to try and understand how I might be interviewed. The first part of the book is silly nonsense and you can skip past it and go directly to the meat of the interview questions.I found that most of the questions I was asked in several interviews were in this book.I was able to have the confidence going into the interview to not have my brain freeze up like I normally do when faced with several IT staff seated across from me waiting for an answer.I got three job offers and I had a hard time deciding which one to take!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great and has some good interview questions
I went through this book quickly. Reading the first few pages I have not seen great differences between this book and the other one on Oracle job interview. The only part of this book that I found very useful is the interview questions. The "SYSADMIN" job interview questions are well-written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great UNIX and Linux job interview questions and answers

This is an excellent book for any IT manager who needs to find a unix systems administrator or Linux systems administrator.I was impressed with the coverage for the pre-interview stages and how you can identify those job candidates that are most-likely-to-succeed in the job role.

Better still, I was impressed with the UNIX job interview questions and Linux interview questions and answers. The job interview questions are designed for a telephone interview, and the IT manager can just ask the questions and compare the responses to the "ideal" answer.

Overall, this book is a real timesaver for anyone hiring a UNIX SA or a Linux System Administrator.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best interview book ever
This book changed my whole career outlook...

It was my junior year at UCLA and I had really busted my butt to get good grades and be involved with on campus activities. I looked great on paper and was getting a ton of interviews for engineering internships. But after bombing my 5th interview in a row, I knew something needed to change. So I bought 3 or 4 interview books for my last 3 upcoming interviews.

The first couple books didn't really help me with my practice interviews, they gave intangible advice on things I kind of knew but didn't know how to implement. But when I finally got to this book it changed my life. It outlined exactly how I needed to prepare for my interviews. It does take a lot of work, you can't just read it and expect to be great, you have to do the prep work, but when you do, its amazing. After reading the book I ended up sitting on my computer all night coming up with experience vignettes. For the first time I actually felt prepared. After 2 or 3 days of prep work. I was ready to knock my last interviews out of the park. I came out of all three interviews knowing that I killed them. That summer I got job offers from all three companies.

Then the next year when I was looking for a full time job, I was able to use what I learned from this book to not only kill my engineering interviews, but kill interviews in completely unrelated fields to engineering. I ultimately took a job with a management consulting firm that specializes in banking consulting.

Without a doubt, this book took me from complete interview failure to interview Rockstar. This book is a must read to anyone who is serious about getting the jobs they want.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book but lacks good negotiation advice
I agree with the other reviews and found it a great, easy-to-read, realistic read. However, I found the advice on negotiation overly simplistic and optimistic. In corporate America one can't expect to meekly ask for a small amount like $3000 and expect to get a nice "yes" in return.According to other sources I've read, employers often budget 20-30% more for candidates than they initially offer, but hiring managers have no incentive to give that money away unless the candidate convinces them otherwise. This should be done in a cordial manner, but it takes backing up your argument with facts and a list of qualifications. It might take time and will be uncomfortable. This book doesn't provide guidance that will help many job seekers get the salary they want or deserve.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Voice of Experience
I recently reconnected with the author, an executive recruiter who placed me in my most recent executive position back in the year 2000. Alan had made a lasting impression on me, so it was natural to contact him now as I started my new career search. After all, I have never been better coached and prepared by an executive recruiter to win a desired opportunity. So when Alan let me know that he had written a book, I ran right out and picked up a copy.It was an excellent refresher of the extraordinary one-on-one personal coaching I had received in the past from Mr. Neirenberg. I highly recommend this book to everyone seeking a career move. You, too, can benefit from the advice of this consummate professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and concise
In this concise and insightful book, Alan shares his vast insights and practical experiences that will assist anyone prepare for and win at interviewing. It is a terrific and informative read!

4-0 out of 5 stars This book will definitely prepare you!
I am trying to get into medical device sales. I have extensive sales experience but none within the medical field. I know how important it will to really shine during my interview process, which is why I bought this book. Almost all of the questions can be applied to any industry, not just pharma sales. These are tough, difficult questions to answer. Questions that anyone who is serious about nailing their interview should definitely have intelligent responses to. I was the hiring manager for my last company. Many of the questions in this book were the same questions I asked potential candidates, most of which failed miserably in their responses. It will take much time and effort to really study this book and answer all the questions. But ANSWER THE QUESTIONS!! It will be worth it. You will sound like an intelligent, competent candidate who has the skill set your future employer is looking for. My interviews start next week, and I feel confident I will be able to successfully answer anything I'm asked. This is a good book. Anne Posegate and Lisa Lane did a great job writing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jam-packed with Interview Info!
200 pages of "must-have" information for the serious pharma sales jobseeker. Readers become "interview-ready" and find themselves fully prepared in advance for the tough phone and in-person interviews that often come unannounced. In addition to offering impressive answers to interview questions, the book details the entire interview process and shows interviewees how not to "overprepare". Readers gain a full understanding of what is expected, what pharma reps do, and what hiring managers are looking for in an "ideal" new hire. In effect, the reader learns how to become that "ideal" candidate. Reading this book, allows interviewees to prepare ahead of time and impress ALL of the time.

    Product Description

As college graduates soon find out, the real world is tough. Sure, it was hard getting into the right school. But landing a good job is a lot harder. The number of new college grads now outnumbers available entry-level jobs by at least 25 percent. But that figure—sobering as it is—is deceptive, given that only a fraction of those jobs are career-worthy.

So how do you succeed in a marketplace that’s stacked against you? According to professional career counselors D. A. Hayden and Michael Wilder, you’ve got to approach the hunt for employment as if it were a marketing campaign. In other words, you’ve got to make yourself a brand—by creating a clear “story” for yourself, understanding your target audience, and developing an effective communications plan to deliver your message.

You’ve also got to avoid the pitfalls. Hayden and Wilder identify four personality traits that can doom first-time job seekers to failure. Then, through a trademark method they call Candidate Illumination, the authors prescribe cures for those “pathologies” and present savvy strategies for every step of the job-search process—from finding your focus, to composing a winning resume, to acing the interview. (Note to parents: This book may be the best gift you could give your graduating son or daughter.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the majority of college grads
The synopsis of this book promises that "graduates will come away with the most valued skill of all--confidence in their own ability to pursue and land jobs with true career potential." Instead, this book is one of the least encouraging and confidence-boosting career guides I've read.

The authors aim the book primarily at wealthy grads--Ivy Leaguers and elite liberal arts college graduates--who have, in their own words, "probably had tutors to keep them ahead in their studies and they've taken focused lessons in dance, music, language, and sports. Some of these kids were coached to get into the right private secondary school. They've participated in SAT prep classes and worked with counselors to identify and secure coveted spots in the best colleges and universities." While this is undoubtedly somewhat hyperbolic, it's only a slight exaggeration; nearly all of the authors' "case-in-point" examples from clients come from privileged graduates of first-tier colleges and universities with equally impressive internship experience.

The problem with this is not just that it is discouraging to typical college students (though it is), but that it highlights the authors' unwillingness to handle such students or lack of experience with them (probably because only the privileged grads they showcase are able to afford to visit career counselors). This unwillingness/lack of experience leads the authors to spend an inordinate amount of time talking about minutiae (which fork to use at a business lunch, what type of stripes on a tie to wear, etc.) rather than real issues. If you didn't go to an Ivy League school, intern with Goldman Sachs, and learn to speak several foreign languages, you have much more important things to worry about than whether your cuffs are creased.

The book suffers from several other problems with focus. The authors focus heavily on business majors to the exclusion of everyone else (the majority of their case-in-point examples are business or business-related grads). This ignores a fundamental reality that employers in different industries are looking for different things (a problem, I admit, inherent to general career-hunting books as a whole and not solely afflicting this book). In addition, the book doesn't take into account the current economic crisis. One would expect advice regarding job-hunting to differ during a deep recession, so the fact that the book doesn't even mention the crisis makes me wary of its tips.

Finally, the book is too heavily reliant on anecdotal evidence; there are hardly any statistical data to support its claims. For instance, in a chapter devoted entirely to discrediting the career services departments at colleges and universities, the authors claim that "Most career services staffers don't care if you get a job." While that may be true, no evidence is provided in support of it. Given that the authors are direct competitors with career services departments and would benefit financially if fewer students utilized the (often free) services of such departments, one would expect them to actually provide some statistical data demonstrating the inefficacy of these programs. Most of the book's claims go similarly unsupported.

In summary, unless you're one of the few lucky graduates of a top school who has been preened for success by "helicopter parents" for most of your life, with a major in business, a GPA above 3.7, elite internship experience, foreign language skills, athletic leadership, etc., (and you're so good the economy won't affect you a whit) there are better books out there for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good gift for any college student
There are plenty of how-to books on job-hunting and résumé-writing, but From B.A. to Payday: Launching Your Career After College, is specifically targeted to new or soon-to-be college graduates. Authors D.A. Hayden and Michael Wilder have impressive credentials and work histories in marketing and joined forces to form Hayden-Wilder, a company that helps first-time job applicants develop their own branding message and market themselves to Corporate America.

Their book is well-organized and infused with humor that should appeal to most college students. Hayden and Wilder also do an excellent job of helping readers understand how to use their experiences from past summer jobs or volunteer positions, no matter how menial the work, to highlight important skills that will demonstrate why they will be an asset to any company.

Probably the most valuable chapters are those on networking and interviewing. The authors present a way to set up and maintain a networking database that won't overwhelm the new jobseeker. The section on interviewing helps the reader decipher the real meaning behind interviewers' questions and demonstrates how respondents should support all their answers with experiential examples. Hayden and Wilder also advise jobseekers to Google their interviewers before their appointments in order to gather as much information as possible about the person with whom they'll be meeting; this information can then be used to subtly weave flattering comments into the conversation. However, Hayden and Wilder fail to remind readers to make sure they are collecting information on the correct "Mary Smith," for example. Imagine how embarrassed you'd feel if you told your interviewer that you were impressed with her outreach work with Sudanese orphans, only to have her tell you that she has never even worked with children. Oops, that must have been another Mary Smith.

Of course, no content on interviewing would be complete without giving advice on how to dress for an interview, and Hayden and Wilder do that well too. Interestingly, while the authors feel it's important enough to tell readers not to wear jeans (and other questionable apparel and accessories) to an interview, their instructions on what to include on a résumé leave something to be desired. In fact, the section on résumés is where the authors lose some of their credibility. For example, Hayden and Wilder include an Activities/Skills/Interests section on their clients' résumés and counsel readers to do the same, but including interests or any personal information goes against the current recommendations of most résumé experts. Even more troubling, the authors include rock climbing as an activity on the résumé of an outstanding job candidate. I would argue that most managers and human resource professionals would view an employee's rock climbing as an activity that could potentially cost the company more in medical insurance claims and premiums, and thus, an applicant with that interest on his/her résumé would likely be excluded from the interviewing process.

Another résumé section that can doom an applicant but that Hayden-Wilder put on their clients' résumés is the objective statement. The recommendation of most professional résumé preparers, including Martin Weitzman of Gilbert Résumés in New York, is to replace the objective statement with a summary of qualifications. According to Weitzman, the summary "...is your sales pitch. Use it to establish your value by telling people why you're ready for this job and what you bring to the table."

Hayden and Wilder also list clients' education in chronologic order rather than reverse chronologic order, the more accepted format on résumés.

Despite the shortcomings of the chapter on résumés, there is still a lot of valuable information in this book. More than anything else, it will give readers confidence as they prepare themselves for a job search.

Quill says: This book would make a good gift for any college student.

Most of the information offered in this book is common sense. There is nothing in this book you couldn't find on the web by searching for "interviewing tips"

4-0 out of 5 stars short, but helpful
This is a fairly small, short book, but it's packed with lots of helpful information. It goes through what you should wear on your interview, how to behave with the receptionist or front desk person, what to bring with you, and other details that someone who's never had a job interview might need to know.My favorite part, though, was the list of possible questions the interviewer might ask. After going through most of them, I felt a lot more prepared, and the interviewer actually asked some of the ones I rehearsed. Not having read this book beforehand would have been like not having studied for a test--I might have known some of the answers, but certainly not as many and not as well.So...read this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
If you are looking to get into the buiiness this book is a must read. It provieded me with tons of useful info.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, Could Have Been Better
This book gives some good solid advice re. interview questions and answers, and helped me rev up my resume to 5 star quality. However, a lot of the advice on how to get the interview in "3 days" is either not the big brand new idea this book makes it out to be (ie asking around at the pharmacy, docs offices), or it sounds like a horrible idea. Spend a day in a physician's parking lot stopping pharma reps as they try to enter the building to do their job, and bug them again on their way out? The author assures you most reps are outgoing and friendly people who are alone most of the day so they won't mind talking to you at all. Really? So they won't all try to avoid the wannabe rep hanging around their car in the cold parking lot?

The "free software" the book gives you (List on Disc) of Pharmaceutical/Medical companies and their locations, websites and phone numbers is only somewhat helpful. It was easy to download and nice that it could be organized by location, but about 50% of the websites were incorrect. I'm not sure if that many have gone out of biz since 2008, or if this list just needs to be updated.

I did give it 3 stars bc it answered a lot of my questions (what about contract companies? what about these scam artist sounding pharma sales "certification classes" offered on the internet? what do I put in a brag book?)

If youre going to buy just 1 book-- don't make this the one! But it is a nice resource for a few topics that would make a nice addition to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 Days to a Pharmaceutical Sales Job Interview
This book is terrific.I have read two other books on the subject of interviewing for Pharmaceutical Sales.I have been a rep now for 4 years.I read the earlier editions which are similar, but I wanted to see the changes in the newest edition. The book was esential to me breaking into the industry.I had the experience I needed, but the book helped me to put my experience into the correct format for the interview.I had interviewed several times, but was never able to make it to the final round.I read the book before my last interview before getting into the industry.I give the book a lot of credit for helping me mold my interview answers.I have also used and recommended the book to others that I have trained for the interview process.I have interested candidates read the book before we even begin the mock interview process. It is essential and should be read by anyone interested in the industry.I am also using the book to review the interview questions in the book to refresh me for new opportunities when I interview for new jobs.Lisa Lane stays current and gives great pointers for the industry.I'm sure that if you read this book you will have an edge over the competition during the interview process. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars General management book only
I have read many interview books lately and this one was disappointment in a sense that it only applies towards senior management jobs. For some reason, author of this book assumes that only senior managers make $100K/year.Anyone else who is in a professional field (medical, law, technical) is excluded from this book because book only applies to managerial types and by that I mean general management professionals only. Have you ever wondered why you didn't get a job offer after an important interview?

People interviewing for jobs today often fail because they are using yesterday's strategies. They haven’t realized that the best employers have changed the way interviews are done, and it now takes a different strategy to succeed. Competency-Based Interviews shows today's candidates a new, more targeted way to prepare for the tough interviews based on the competencies that the most sophisticated employers are looking for.

Competency-Based Interviews offers you a new and more effective way to handle the tough new interviews so that you will emphasize the knowledge, skills and abilities that you have and that employers need. Most sophisticated U.S. and international employers are using competency-based systems to recruit, interview and select employees. Corporations such as American Express, Anheuser Busch, BP, Coca-Cola, Energizer, Federal Express, IBM, and Pfizer are all looking for specific competencies.

Preparing for a competency-based interview will give you the strategy you need to:

    • Be selected for the most competitive positions.
    • Win the best job at a new organization.
    • Get a great first job or internship.
    • Be chosen for that critical promotion in your current organization.
    • Take control of your career path.
    • Increase your salary.
    • Get more interesting assignments and more interesting work

Most interviewees don't know how to be successful when they are being interviewed by an organization looking for key competencies. Great book!As an HR Professional, this is a must read for anyone going on an interview.

    Jim R.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty concise and examples help your tailor your own presentation
I like it get to the point quickly and didn't much introductions (e.g. entry level stuffs for beginners)I used it to write down the important points to present myself during interview.I also used it together with "Acing the Interview: How to Ask and Answer the Questions That Will Get You the Job"

Using these 2 books, I organized good notes for the interviews, presented myself clearly and got a job.I originally though these kind of books are for people with no experiences, I was wrong. They are actually helpful, you will find a lot of things you haven't paid attention before and the concepts they have are pretty updated.

3-0 out of 5 stars and for the peon?
I just don't think that the people who do the interviewing and certainly not this gentleman understand that when you are a secretary or a receptionist, that you do not have this long list of accomplishments. My biggest accomplishment is answering a 36 line phone.
When you have a deadline and you have to wait for the copy repairman to show up so you can finish the presentation? What can you do about it? You sit and wait because your boss won't let you go to Kinkos.
Or when you tell them that lunch didn't arrive for the members of the Board and you had to find transportation to the restaraunt and lunch reservations at the last minute, no one seems to think that is as great as winning the Nobel Peace Prize or creating a vacine for Polio.
Competency based interviews are for the birds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book is so easy to read and apply. The strategies and guidance helped me to get my first job out of college. I'm about to go on another job search and plan on reading the book all over again. This book is definitely required reading for any serious job-seeker.

To the author, Robin Kessler: Thank you for writing this book! It's a keeper for a life-time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to prepare for upcoming interview
I live in Houston and initially talked to the author, Robin Kessler, about doing some practice interviews before an important interview. Because I was temping at the time and couldn't afford it, she suggested I read this book to prepare myself.I wasn't too excited about reading a book, but was very glad that I did.I have never studied so hard for an interview before and didn't really understand the need to prepare myself in such a thorough way. However, it was well worth it-this book was a quick read-broken down into bite size pieces and really helped me come up with a way to take my experience, write it down in an outline, and be able to speak it clearly in an interview setting.I also liked the fact that she suggested looking at the job description to pull key/buzz words out and turn those into competencies to be focused on.I took those competencies and found 2 or 3 examples from my experience and had those examples in mind while in the interview. It worked and I felt prepared.Definitely worth the read and price for any interview setting. Thanks, Robin! ... "Recently, I had the most important job interview in my 20-year career, and for some last minute advice on 'winning over the competition' I phoned a dear friend and her husband, an executive with a Fortune 500 company.Instead of providing advice on how to answer interview questions, they provided me with some great questions to ask the hiring manager. The questions came from Mr. Burnett's "The Peak Interview". I quickly acquired a copy of his book and devoured it in just a couple of hours. I applied the book's techniques and as a result, the interview was the best interview of my life. They called with the job offer last night!"Lisa Wadlington, Memphis TN, 10 Aug 2010New insights into the job interview process can give you an edge to win the interview and get the job. By the time you get to the job interview, the company has determined you are qualified for the job. But so are all the other interviewees. Your experience, skills, competencies, and abilities will not differentiate you. Your competition is just as qualified as you are. You need an edge. Great jazz soloists know that when they are playing a solo, they have to hit one or two peaks in the body of the solo and end with a flourish. That's because people evaluate an experience based on its peaks (good or bad) and how the experience ended. The rest of the experience is remembered, but the evaluation of the experience is based on its peaks, and how it ends. This is called the 'Peak/End rule'. Psychologist Daniel Kahneman is credited with describing this rule. His insight had such a big impact on the study of Economics that he won the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics, despite being a psychologist who never took any economics courses. Recently, I had the most important job interview in my 20-year career, and phoned a dear friend and her husband, a VP with a Fortune 500 company, for some last minute advice on "winning over the competition." They began by providing some great questions to use on those interviewing me, and told me how those questions would give me insight into the team environment and what my future manager was really like. The questions came from Mr. Burnett's "The Peak Interview". I quickly acquired a copy of his book and devoured it in just a couple of hours.

The dynamics of the job interview will never be the same for me again. I paid more attention to what the interviewer was saying and engaged him fully in the interview process. By asking a few key questions, I set two "peaks" that will make certain the panel remembers me in association with moments from their own careers they are most proud of achieving. Mr. Burnett's book is written in a easy to understand format that is applicable for any job level. At the level I was interviewing, these are skills candidates most likely have. I did not, but do now! The information would also be very helpful for students going for college interviews or first job interviews - the message in the book is that easy to understand. Mr. Burnett lays the foundation and provides real world examples in order for the reader to personalize the information for use.

Times are tough now and unemployment is high. We all need to be in peak shape to present ourselves and our message clearly when interviewing for jobs that have several hundred qualified applicants. Read this book and be conditioned to give the best job interview of your life!

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Read
I certainly recommend The Peak Interview to those in transition who want to excel in the interview process. Some of the author's approaches and techniques can help "set you apart" from the other candidates during critical parts of the job evaluation process. The Peak Interview encourages you to think about the interview process differently and take a more active and effective role. Some of the techniques Mr. Burnett mentions in the book could be used in other facets of one's life too.

It's interesting that many job coaches emphasize the importance of selling yourself during the transition process but the author, Mr. Burnett, takes another perspective. Yes, to a certain point you are selling yourself but what about once you get to the interview phase. Mr. Burnett makes the case that all candidates are equally qualified so you must be memorable and somehow differentiate yourself. You need a competitive advantage. Peak Interview certainly illustrates ways you can differentiate yourself.

One part of the book that really resonates with me revolves around connecting with people while you're engaged in social networking. Having a genuine interest in the person you're speaking with can help bridge the gap and connect with people. Of course, be warm and smile and eye contact is very important. Don't just hear but listen too. Yes it's hard work to be engaged and listen but these techniques can be used in your professional or personal life and helps you become better with social networking. The author goes on to talk about ways you can get the other person to talk about themselves, their first job, or a significant accomplishment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for any Professional in Transition
Bill Burnett has hit the nail on the head in this book. After reading this book, for the first time in my life I understand what happened during all those interviews I had during my career that left me scratching my head.Burnett outlines a step-by-step interviewing approach that will greatly increase the odds of getting the job.He turns conventional wisdom on its head and shows you how to distinquish yourself in the eyes of the interviewer and stand out from all of the "usual suspects" with whom you're competing. The fact that his approach is based on the research of a Nobel Prize winner, but is presented in a clear and understandable way, makes this book one of the best business books I have ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Peak Interview...Helping you reach the summit & beyond
Bill Burnett's "The Peak Interview" is a terrific resource for folks facing the task of finding a job.In it, Bill gives succinct tips for building rapport & leaving interviewers with a strong impression of who you are and what you can do for the firm should you get hired. The book is chalk full of practical tips, from cover letters, to follow up practices, as well as questions one ought ask throughout the interview process.Bill emphasizes three critical factors that I, as an executive coach, encourage with all my clients:Be Yourself, Tell Stories & Practice."The Peak Interview" is a book you'll be able to pick up time and time again and pass on to others for nuggets of wisdom and renewed insight into a process that can be both daunting and uncomfortable.Ultimately, Bill reminds us that relationships are the key to success, and if you take the time to hone the skill of listening to others, and to your own instincts, with patience and practice, you'll find a job that you'll flourish in.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome shift in perspective
Bill Burnett moves away from commodified notions of "selling oneself" in the interview process and replaces them with an empowering subjective exchange; creating "peak experiences" for one's interviewer. In this view, one is not so much selling oneself as aiding the hiring manager and prospective company solve a problem, and, in the process, making the world a better place. This is not merely excitement, buzzwords, or warm fuzzy conjecture, as Mr. Burnett demonstrates with evidence from psychology, economics, and personal experience.Mr. Burnett rounds the book out with examples, skillsheets, and plenty of useful tips and tricks.Whilethese will no doubt improve the odds for jobseekers, one gets the feeling that, by reframing interviewing as joint problem solving and peak experience creation, job-hunters, having created a positive experience for someone (the interviewer), even when not successful otherwise, will be neither disappointed nor discouraged.A welcome change from the chorus of solely self-focused, yet strangely objectifying interview books on the market.

I've checked out this book from the library a number of times for job and grad school interviews (although it doesn't focus on school interviews). I found it to be a helpful guide to really look at what my goals and skills are and to be able to articulate them in an interview. I finally broke down and bought a copy. Anything referenced so often is sure to be a useful addition to my collection.

    Job Hunting Tips

Are you a fresh graduate and planning to look for a job? Did you just recently quit your job and are looking for greener pastures? Are you unemployed and have little experience regarding ways to secure a job? Whatever your situation may be, it would be to your advantage to study the following tips:

    Check your resume for mistakes

Before submitting your resume to a prospective employer, check your it for corrections at least three times before handing it over. After researching about the job position, it is critical that you format your resume to match the needs of the company. For example, if you are applying for an accounting job, you should put in detail your accounting experience on your resume. Typographical and grammatical errors are serious no-no's. It is also ideal to keep the length of the resume' to at least a page and a half long.

    Taking the interview challenge

A survey conducted by a staffing and consulting firm based in California which corresponded with 1,400 chief financial officers concluded that candidates for employment made most of their mistakes on their interviews. Some of the mistakes they made include:

    * Arriving late

    * Having little knowledge about the company

    * Having little knowledge about the position applied for

    * Having a superiority complex

    * Behaving arrogantly

The body language of the applicant must also denote that he is confident yet not overpowering. He must maintain eye contact, have a strong handshake, and avoid looking defensive by the act of crossing the arms. Wearing the right clothes is crucial for projecting a confident stance. As they say, it is better to go to an interview over-dressed than being under-dressed. ... Read more
