Product Description

Louise Nevelson (1900–1988) was a towering figure in postwar American art, exerting great influence with her monumental installations, innovative sculptures made of found objects, and celebrated public artworks. The Sculpture of Louise Nevelson focuses on all phases of the artist’s remarkable ascent to the top of the art world, from her groundbreaking works of the 1940s to complex pieces completed in the late 1980s. The most extensive study of Nevelson to be published in over 20 years, this beautifully illustrated book also demonstrates how Nevelson’s flamboyant style and carefully cultivated persona enhanced her reputation as an artist of the first rank.

Essays by distinguished scholars examine a wide variety of important issues and themes throughout Nevelson’s career, including the role of monochromatic color in her painted wooden sculpture; the art-historical context of her work; her acclaimed large-scale commissioned artworks, which established her as a central figure in the public art revival of the late 1960s; and her “self-fashioning” as a celebrated artist, particularly her origins as a Ukrainian-born Jewish immigrant to the United States. An illustrated chronology and exhibition history accompany the text.

Published in conjunction with the first major exhibition of Nevelson’s work in America since 1980, this book provides essential information on and insights into the study of a revolutionary 20th-century artist.

Product Description
In the year 1800, South Carolina was home to more Jews than any other place in North America. As old as the province of Carolina itself, the Jewish presence has been a vital but little-examined element in the growth of South Carolina’s cities and towns, in the economy of slavery and post-slavery society, and in the creation of American Jewish religious identity.

The record of a landmark exhibition that will change the way people think about Jewish history and American history, A Portion of the People: Three Hundred Years of Southern Jewish Life presents a remarkable group of objects and a provocative investigation of the people and circumstances that produced them. The book and exhibition culminate a seven-year collaboration by the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina, McKissick Museum of the University of South Carolina, and the College of Charleston. A Portion of the People is an important addition to Southern arts and letters. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Documenting a ground breaking exhibit
Dale Rosengarten spent hundreds of hours working on a marvelous exhibit. If you were fortunate enough to have seen the exhibit in Charleston, New York, Columbia or Charlotte, I know you'll agree that it was superb and this book will keep your memory fresh. If you didn't have the chance to see the exhibit and you're interested in the history of Jews in America then this is the book from an exhibit that has sparked a new era of interest by historians to rediscover southern Jewish life from the mid 18th century to the present.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facinating History of a Dynamic Jewish Community
At important times in early American history, the largest and most important Jewish Community was in Charleston, South Carolina. Unlike many parts of the world where Jews were then treated as a dispised or distrusted minority, relegated to the fringes of community life, these Jews (like their neighbors in Georgia) were an integral and valued element in the colony form its earliest time. The were truly "a portion of the people." Here Jews blended in and prospered and Judaism flourished. The first Jew was elected to a legislature in modern times in the Revolutionary War period there.Jews fought along side their fellow citizens as colonists, in the Revolutionary War, and in the Civil War.A number of nationally prominent Jewish figures (including one of the first two Jewish Senators, the first Jew nominated to the US Supreme Court, prominent business men and cabinet officials) trace their heritage to this part of the South.
And the authors tell of the cradle of Reform Judaism in Charleston where the first prayer book and hymnal were written. The reforms that were to make Reform Judaism the largest denomination, such as services in English, an important role for women, and full integration into the community, were established there.Beth Elohim, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in America, is located here.
The authors have put together a good set of photographs of people and places and interesting text on this little known chapter of American and Jewish history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Experience !
Received this book as it was described - in new condition!I ordered the book the American way (at the last moment and OMG I need this tomorrow for a gift mode - LOL) and this seller was sooooooo accomodating. Before he had written consent that I would pay extra for postage, he had mailed it.Of course i paid a little extra - well worth it- thank you sooooo much!

The book was a huge surprise for the person I gifted it to and so thank you again for allowing me to give it to her on her special day!

I would do business with them again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Own This Book Along With A Visit To The Museum
This book tells the story of the founding and exhibits of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC. This book does not replace visits to the Museum. It is an excellent reference book to have in combination with visits to the Museum. The Holocaust Museum is one of the finest Museums in Washington, DC.

The history told at the Museum is powerful in so many ways. My hope is that humanity can learn from history not to keep repeating the many horrific mistakes that were made during the period of Hitler and Stalin. We must always remember that most of the terrible crimes during this period were sanctioned, promoted and authorized by National Governments. The Governments of nations can and do become evil, corrupt and murderous. We the people of the world must be forever vigilant against vesting too much power in the hands of too few people. Concentrated power almost always becomes corrupt.

We must learn from history how to prevent the concentrations of power in too few people. These concentrations of power can sooner or later lead to evil. Even power that is initially built on good intentions will good bad eventually. That is the nature of the human condition that we must fear that charismatic leaders will concentrate power in ways that are unhealthy and deadly. We should find ways to avoid electing charismatic leaders as these types of leaders are just too dangerous. The Holocaust happened just seconds ago in terms of the lifespan of our planet, and something like it will happen again unless we learn the lessons taught to us by history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A haunting and powerful summary of the museum, itself
Having recently visited The Holocaust Museum, I felt compelled to own this book as a tangible memory. The book captures the essence of the holocaust experience with outstanding images and words, often understated, thatcontinue to evoke the emotions felt in the museum. ... Read more

Product Description
Clara Lowenburg Moses: Memoir of a Southern Jewish Womanshares the story of one of Natchez’s most interesting residents.Born in 1865 to Isaac and Ophelia Lowenburg and the granddaughter ofJewish community founders John and Jannette Mayer, Clara grew up in anaffluent and influential family. In the 1870s her father served asNatchez’s first Jewish mayor, and her maternal aunts and unclesheld important economic, civic, and social leadership positionsbefore, during, and after the Civil War.

Clara’s unpublished memoir, from which Machlovitz draws materialfor her book, reveals a complex and fascinating life.As a Jew in apredominantly Protestant town, Clara struggled to define and maintainher Jewish identity.Born and raised in the late nineteenth-centurySouth, she adopted many of the attitudes and characteristics that makethe region unique. Her strong will and independent spirit often puther at odds with Victorian notions of women’s “proper” rolesin society.

Throughout the book, Machlovitz expertly portrays Clara as a productof her time and place and as a unique and free-spirited individual. An introductory chapter explores Natchez Jewry during Clara’slifetime and sets the historical context for her life.Subsequentsections detail her trials and tribulations through adolescence, married life, and widowhood.Clara’s world included a“wicked” stepmother, a deeply troubled husband, numerous brusheswith death, and many happy days with family and friends. ... I found this book to be very amateurish and was obviously written by a woman that needs to get her facts straight.I wouldnt doubt if this "Author" was dating the president of the publishing company.

Product Description

Born Emmanuel Radnitzky, the artist known as Man Ray (1890–1976) revealed multiple artistic identities over the course of his career—New York Dadaist, Parisian Surrealist, international portraitist, and fashion photographer––and produced important works as a photographer, painter, filmmaker, writer, and maker of objects. Alias Man Ray considers how the artist’s life and career were shaped by his turn-of-the-century American Jewish immigrant experience and his lifelong evasion of his past.

As an exploration of the artist’s deliberate cultural ambiguity, which allowed him to become the first American artist to be accepted by the Paris avant garde, this book examines the dynamic connection between Man Ray’s working-class origins, his assimilation, the evolution of his art, and his willful construction of his own artistic persona, as evidenced in a series of subtle, encrypted self-references throughout the artist’s career. Beautifully illustrated, Alias Man Ray will stand as a definitive study of an incomparable figure in 20th-century art.

5-0 out of 5 stars revealing analysis of Man Ray the person and his art
Man Ray (1890-1976), born in Philadelphia to Russian Jewish parents, was initially named Emmanuel Radnitzky. It is enlightening to read his plainly written and emotionally unrevealing memoirs titled "Self Portrait" where he glosses over his formative years in a few pages. There is nothing written in the whole book about his Jewish background and very little concerning his family relationships. The essays in "Alias Man Ray"attempt to shed new light on Ray's personality and his artistic output.

In the first article Mason Klein aims to "examine Man Ray's life and work as a deliberate, ongoing attempt to reinvent himself and his art, and to reconcile his need to obscure but still to declare himself". This chapter might well have been titled "Ray Man on the Couch". I suspect that had Man been in therapy, he would have been an extremely fascinating subject but not one to willingly reveal much of himself .

Two further essays cover his artistic output and the book concludes with an extended cutural timeline. I found the quality of the written material unusually intelligent and thought provoking. Contrary to the usual catalog presentation, the exhibition material is interspersed within the writing rather than being in a separate section. The images consist of his creations(paintings, objects, drawings, photographs, sculptures etc) anddocumentary items. It is instructive to observe how diverse Ray's artistic oeuvre was and how derivative and lacking in a common style it appears. Ultimately it was Man Ray's photographic gifts that remain the most memorable aspect of his artistic legacy.

This book is well printed with the reproductions being of an above average quality. There is no dust jacket. I strongly recommend this insightful and informative book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!
Absolutely beautiful. After years of using a popular competitor, I chose to use this calendar for it's size, usefulness and beauty. Well produced with excellent choices of artwork. Well done! I look forward to 5771 edition. Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jewish Calendar 2010
Great calendar EXCEPT it should be wider! Perhaps it is downsized from previous years in order to save production costs. However, in order to be completely functional and allow a big enough space for each day in order to write in appointment times, etc., the calendar needs to be returned to its wider format for its 2011 (and thereafter) printing.

1-0 out of 5 stars So disappointed by small size
I also have used this calendar for many years - I have 13 years worth stacked up on my desk -but the new size is definitely too small. I didn't realize when I ordered it over the internet that it had shrunk! Now I want to return it and look for another Jewish calendar that is the size of the old ones. It was soooo useful like that! I'm so disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Calendar is now too small to use
The calendar has shrunk horizontally and our family no longer has enough room to record our appointments.I'm in the process of returning it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Smaller format than prior years is bad.
As the previous reviewer points out, for those of us who have bought this calendar for its large date squares in previous years, this year is a huge disappointment because they reduced the width from 15" to 12".Since I bought it the week before anyone had posted that warning, I have to return it to Amazon now and lose the shipping cost. ... with an essay and site photographs by Ralph LiebermanLouis I. Kahn (1901-1974) was among the most highly regarded twentieth-century architects, yet the relationship of his haunting travel sketches to his work has not been systematically explored until now. Drawn from the Source shows how Kahn's encounters with the great buildings of the past influenced his own architecture, and how monuments such as the Salk Institute and the Kimbell Art Museum employ natural materials and natural light to create a sense of permanence and communal space inspired by buildings far removed in time and place.Drawn from the Source describes Kahn's journeys to Europe and Asia in 1928-1929, 1951, and 1959, culminating in the great pastel sketches that circulated privately among architects and played a large part in the revival of architectural sketching in recent years. Each sketching episode is considered in terms of its contribution to Kahn's later architectural formulations, showing how he worked from his sketches to make that great synthesis of modernism and historical form that distinguishes his work.Kahn's itineraries are vividly reconstructed through surviving watercolor, pastel, and pencil drawings that reveal rapid shifts in style, sometimes week by week, while he developed a way of drawing that reflected his understanding of architectural form. Specially commissioned photographs taken by Ralph Lieberman from the precise viewpoints of the drawings document the variance of the sites from Kahn's selective interpretation of them.Amazon.com Review
These sketches document three visits to the Mediterranean--in1928-29, 1950-51, and 1959--which were instrumental in shaping theideas of LouisKahn, America's greatest postwar architect. They include Kahn'searly drawings of the Tuscan hill town of San Gimignano, whose towerswould later appear in his Brutalist buildings; and his later moreinterpretive and emotion-charged sketches of the Valley of the Kingsin Egypt and St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. This catalogue accompaniesa December 1996 exhibition of Kahn's drawings with the same title atthe Jewish Museum in New York, organized by the authors, who teach arthistory at Williams College. ... Product Description

Sarah Bernhardt (1844–1923) was an extraordinary performer, so much so that her name became synonymous with acting. Yet her importance extended beyond the world of theater—she was an icon of French nationalism, a target of both admiration and scorn, an artist and sculptor, and a trendsetting avatar of style. This fascinating book examines the many sides and talents of Bernhardt, from her beginnings at the Comédie Française through her international stardom. Wonderfully illustrated, the book features an unprecedented collection of images relating to Bernhardt’s life, including paintings, posters, photographs, costumes, jewelry, stage designs, self-portraits, and sculptures.

Bernhardt orchestrated a brilliant sixty-year career as an actress and entrepreneur, becoming a revered patriotic figure in her native France and a beloved star in America, where she undertook nine successful tours. Along the way she sat for the most fashionable artists of her time, became the most photographed woman in the world, and attached her name to everything from hair curlers to liqueurs. This book brings the incredible Sarah Bernhardt to life for contemporary readers and highlights her historical significance and integral place in modern culture.

Featured illustrations include:

• Art Nouveau posters by Alphonse Mucha depicting Bernhardt in her most famous roles

• Designer costumes, tunics, tiaras, and jewelry

• A human skull, a gift from Victor Hugo

• Portraits of the actress by Jean Cocteau, Félix Nadar, Andy Warhol, and others
