5-0 out of 5 stars A must acquire for librarians
If you tell someone something, they know that fact. If you teach someone to find out the fact themselves, they can get any fact they desire. "More Hands-On Information Literacy Activities" is a guide aimed at librarians in educating their patrons to use the resources of the library. Expanding on the subjects presented in the earlier volumes, Hunt & Birks offer more knowledge and wisdom of educators and how to inspire research in patrons. The library is still the modern ideal source for good, factual research, and knowing how to use it to its fullest extent is a solid skill. Enhanced with a CD-ROM full of activities, "More Hands-On Information Literacy Activities" is a must acquire for librarians.

Product Description

Building on the information needs and the learning style preferences of today's high school students, the author builds a case for using pop culture (TV shows, fads, and current technology) to build integrated information skills lessons for students.Chapters include a rationale, a review of the current literature, and examples of units of study incorporating popular culture and technology.

There is serious discussion in the media about today's youth, the Echo Boomers, and their connection with technology. Our high school students tell us that they have few meals with their families, that they want their teachers and their school's decision makers to listen to them and take their ideas seriously, and that they use the little free time they have to talk to or instant message with their friends or to play video games. Author and media critic Jon Katz says, Technology is youth culture. These kids are building a revolution. Technology is part of their ideology, their language, everything they do. Building on the information needs and the learning style preferences of today's high school students, the author builds a case for using pop culture (TV shows, fads and current technology) to build integrated information-skills lessons for students. Product Description
Media literacy is a literacy beyond reading and writing that includes the ability to read messages through visual images. This book is a collection of 182 activities designed to help develop and refine student perception of this scripted world. The cross-curricular, McREL standards-based activities cover some electronic media (radio, television, video games and photography) and print media (newspapers, magazines, books, advertisements, junk mail, travel brochures and billboards). Advertising, target audience, bias and sales are all touched upon in the units. There are no activities for the Internet and evaluating web sites, as there are already many excellent activity books available for teachers.

The activities are intended to help children develop higher levels of critical thinking, to help them discriminate between fiction and non-fiction, to detect the persuasive intent of what they see, and to learn about the economic, political functions and relationships of media. The activities will help them learn to gather information, analyze the construction of the message, evaluate the content to determine if it expresses their own views or someone else’s, detect bias and then create their own messages through the various types of media explored.

The activities can be integrated into many different curriculum units. Language arts, math, technology, science and art are all incorporated into many of the activities. There is a section of literature connections that includes activities around children’s book titles that present scenarios that demonstrate the huge impact media plays in children’s lives.

The book begins with general classroom activities, such as a word wall and a glossary, that help prepare the students for each selected unit. There are full-page reproducibles that may be used to assist students in their analysis of information. In addition to the analytical aspect of media literacy, activities are included to help in the creation of their own media messages. Production of advertisements, newspapers and other scripted materials will allow them to understand how everything they read and see from the media is carefully and critically planned. Technology standards and benchmarks are infused into many of the activities.Software programs that incorporate digital imaging are also valuable assets to teaching media literacy.

The book is designed in a way that will allow easy selection of appropriate activities for each grade level and type of media. Use of these activities will help media-saturated children understand what they are watching on TV, listening to on the radio, seeing at the movie theaters, and why they are spending millions of dollars on heavily advertised clothing, food and entertainment. The activities will hopefully assist them in becoming more sophisticated and savvy consumers of media and goods. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good primer for new library professionals or graduate students
This is a useful text covering three facets of information, 1)the history of the development of library instruction in schools; 2)the research and implications as it applies to searching for information; and 3)trends, models, and strategies for teaching information literacy in schools. The last facet, being the largest in volume, is naturally the most practical; and it will be the reason to select this book. The research presented includes old and new ideas and conclusions that build upon one another to form a cohesive and sensible approach.

On a more personal note, I found the material very helpful to get up to speed in an area that can be neglected in public librarianship training.

Every teacher or parent should own a copy of this book.It is very helpful and full of great ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Convert Your Primary Classroom to the 21st Century
Dr. Jean Casey's book is a handbook for converting elementary language arts curriculum into an interactive learning experience for the students. This book displays many examples of student work and it is an easy read for any busy teacher. Dr. Casey teaches how to use technology as a tool to bring writing alive for all level learners. One of my favorite activities that I have used in my classroom has been the Readers' Theatre. The students can write and illustrate their own stories on the computer, print the stories then let the students read and perform in class. Another level of integration with their stories is to convert the documents into a (.jpeg) file to import into the software application Photo Story 3 so they can record their voices reading their stories and create a digital story to video format. Students are so motivated to read and write because they want to use the technology tools to be producers and publishers.
Dr. Casey book will give teachers new ideas and inspire their creativity to come alive in themselves and in the lives of the students. This book also contains many valuable website resources. I would like to mention one such as, Assistive Technologies closes the gap on learning difficulties, [...]
Digital Literacy is a necessity in 21st century teaching!

I would like to thank Dr. Jean Casey for inspiring me in my teaching career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for stories and activities
I teach early elementary at a school that places great emphasis on oral storytelling and multicultural traditions, and this collection of stories and story related activities is easily one of the best out there. There are stories from all over the world, with a variety of themes, morals, tones, complexity, and purpose. Some stories are lighthearted and whimsical and provide much laughter both to the kids and to myself, while others are more serious with important lessons that we all can learn from.
As diverse and rich as the stories are, the activities and suggestions that are included for each story are surprisingly enjoyable and actually worth doing.Frequently, post story suggestions in books like this feel like afterthoughts, but the activities in this collection- which include pre-reading and post-reading activities- provide excellent opportunities to expand on the details and themes of each story.Story Skeletons are provided for quick reference for oral storytelling, fingerplay illustrations, suggestions for acting out stories, literacy connections, and more.
After checking this b0ok out from the library repeatedly, I finally broke down and bought it.It is one of my favorite resources and my students, year after year, love all that we do in connection with it.
