5-0 out of 5 stars Most Excellent
This book came in pristine condition. It arrived quickly. I was quite pleased with the service and have no complaints.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and thorough introduction to quintessential Indian cooking - with easy, failproof recipes
Cooking the Indian Way is simply the best introduction to Indian cooking for the novice.

A nice bonus:an easy way to plan and serve well-coordinated dinners which include both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

This delightful little gem will teach you how to make complete Indian dinners, including savory Indian breads, chutneys, yogurt dips, many vegetarian dishes, plus spicey fish, yogurt chicken, and several other treats. The tips will enable you to quickly discover how to use Indian spices to nice effect in creating your own dishes, including your own tea and signature spice blends.

The recipes in Vijay Madavan's Cooking the Indian Way have been so popular with my family and friends that several recipes now number among their favorites.Given a choice, my family would have these dishes every night.Be sure to make large portions when you serve these to your guests -- although the dishes are quite filling, you will be astonished at how quickly they will disappear!

Although we initially found this book in a children's section, it is actually the best of the Indian cookbooks we've seen.It includes a nice introduction to regional differences in Indian cooking, and provides some cultural information, as well.

Easy, informative, and delicious, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I know people that have lost 20 pounds in a month on this diet. I just finished reading the book and I can't wait to start. The book was funny and kept me intrested so I was able to read it in a short time. I would recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me
This book really changed things for me I have never done a diet before but being 40 lbs overweight I was getting desperate to do a diet I thought I would give this a try and it worked, in just over a year I have shed 39 lbs and have eaten very well, it does not feel like a diet at all. Its easy to read easy to follow and there are some good recipe suggestions too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth purchasing
I miss dessert, but I don't miss the larger dress sizes, or the pounds I have already taken off, I love the fact that my clothes are hanging off me. If you are looking for a diet that is easy to follow and you can prepare for the whole family this is your diet. I am pleased with my results. Read through it completely before starting, or at least to the end of phase I. I have no regrets having purchased this book. Highly recommend it to the women who has failed on other diets. But you have to have will power, or at least clean out your house of stuff you can't resist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love British Humor..
For those who aren't used to British humor I can see how this book can be offensive.Me, on the other hand, was laughing my butt off. This book felt like it was speaking to me and all my "diet" issues in the past.I lost 8 pounds in my first week and now down 24 total in 2 months.I have 68 lbs to loose (now 44). I am not sure about other people but the weight loss did slow down from the initial weeks.I am still in phase I and feel really healthy.I haven't had my first alcoholic drink yet and saving that for my halfway goal.Saw my doctor for any concerns and he just mentioned to stick with lean meats to save my cholesteral.I have to admit it was tough in the States to find items without sugar or sugar additives (like dextrose in many salamis) in lunch meats, but they are out there.Hebrew National will save your life.Once you have a 3-week grocery list you are set.I make the same thing for my kids and just add a carb side dish for them.My husband is doing it with me and he has lost 23 lbs. I haven't had any cravings, even for alcohol! Ok, maybe that occasional cookie but it's only during a certain time of the month.
I wanted to point out that the book is a "guide" and Neris and India share their own experience and what worked for them. Not everyone is one size fits all. If you need further advice to what you can or cannot eat see their website and check out the 'Forum' link.Everyone is very helpful. For those in the States, find a message board for 'United States' or 'America'. [...]
Good luck to those who started. I have read the book all the way through twice and still pick it up for advice, recipes or just companionship. It's weird, I know..but whatever it takes.Thank you Neris and India!

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Good Information
I like this book but it was very similar to the Atkins Diet.I did like this book because it was very easy to understand the how's and why's of this diet.I haven't really tried the diet yet so I couldn't tell you if it works. It did have a lot of interesting information. ... Read more

Product Description
While most Indian cookbooks feature the cuisine of Northern India, here is an introduction to the flavourful, and predominantly vegetarian, dishes of Southern India, particularly the Madras region. Over 100 recipes for tempting appetisers, chutneys, rice dishes, vegetables and stews -- flavoured with onions, tomatoes, garlic, and delicate spices in varying combinations -- have been adapted for the western kitchen. Clear instructions along with an introduction to Indian spices ensure that even novice cooks can produce delicious, authentic meals. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
South Indian cooking is quite different from North Indian cooking. The spices are different and, although not entirely vegetarian, there is much less use of meat.

The book has a refreshingly practical approach in a market that seems increasingly dominated by foody-porn. There are no glossy, full page photographic spreads. Instead, you'll find a simple collection of recipes and hints and real-world advice on preparing the staples of South Indian cusine, idlis, dohsa, sambar, various appetizers, bahjis, rice dishes, and a few meat dishes. The instructions are clear. A nice feature of these recipes is that they mostly tend to use different combinations of the same dozen or so staple ingredients, easily found in an Indian grocery.

I have enjoyed everything I've prepared from this book. I would recommend it to anyone, like me, who enjoys South Indian food and is looking for a practical introduction.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much tomato sauce
Actually, there are a lot of good recipes here.My husband is from Tamil Nadu and I am always trying to find recipes for some of the dishes I've had at his family home in a Tanjore, especially the delicious vegetable dishes that restaurants never offer.I find that many of these recipes come out very well if I alter them a bit.I use chopped fresh tomatos instead of the ubiquitous tomato sauce, which really drowns the other flavors in the dishes. She also puts tomato sauce where I don't expect a tomato flavor - is this a Chettinad thing?I still haven't found the recipe book I crave: one that tells how to prepare those veggie dishes as my in-laws do!(I get some from them, but the differences in language and kitchen technology makes it hard).

5-0 out of 5 stars My Reference For South Indian Cooking
I highly recommend this book, which to my mind is a good book on South Indian cooking. Unlike a lot of my other cooking books that sit on the shelf after first use, I have gone back to Alamelu's "Art Of South Indian Cooking," many times, both as a source of reference and to try new dishes. The recipes described are easy to follow, quick to make and delicious. A sure BUY if you like South Indian cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delectable and Fun!
This book presents a variety of authentic and delicious South Indian recipies in a clear and accessible way, especially to novice cooks like me. My favorite dishes are "Bell Pepper and Tomato Rice", "Eggplant Masala Curry" and the yogurt salads. I have prepared and served these items to the wild acclaim of my friends and family. The vegetarian dishes presented in this book are wonderful with traditional "American" items such as grilled shrimp or chicken. However, vegetarian dishes this mouth-watering and filling may render meat entrees surplusage. This book is my most used cookbook! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Indian Vegetarian Cooking: a step by step guide
A handy little book to keep in your kitchen. The author briefly covers the origins of vegetarianism in India; goes over some rules for healthy eating; describes the nutrient contribution of various foods; and has anice section describing the spices used in Indian cooking. She givesrecommendations for staples to keep on hand, and includes a short secion onregional variations. A pretty book; lots of color pictures.Good value forthe money.I especially recommend it to those who are just gettinginterested in Indian cooking, but don't want to invest a lot of money.Theonly fault I find with the book is that almost all the recipes are fried.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's useful, but . . . .
I can't quite give it the rave reviews that other readers have given, but it is probably the best book currently available on the subject. It does have quite a bit of useful information, though I didn't find it all that well organized and the author even repeats himself in places. I would have loved more detailed information on the trains themselves (from a passenger's perspective) and some illustrations if not photos. The author seems overly preoccupied with alcoholic beverages and I found his frequent references to the subject annoying. His few recommendations for accomodations were somewhat bizarre: five star hotels and low-budget places with almost nothing in-between. I'm not quite sure why he bothered with any.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very user-friendly guide to India's railroads
As a long-standing fan of the Indian rail system, I find this book a guidewhich will be very useful for any foreign tourist who plans to travel bytrain in India. Packed with many useful tips, especially about the numerousregulations which one needs to know about. However, the writer errssomewhat in describing rail officials as being universally friendly andhelpful; I am sure that most frequent travellers (Indian or foreign) mightnot agree with this. Strongly recommended to anyone interested in India'srailroads.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're into trains this is a great book

Product Description
This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for commercial electric cooking ranges, deep-fat fryers, griddles, toasters, coffe makers, coffee urns, and other cooking equipment across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 5,100 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for commercial electric cooking ranges, deep-fat fryers, griddles, toasters, coffe makers, coffee urns, and other cooking equipment. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
