5-0 out of 5 stars ANDEAN ANTHROPOLOGY AT IT'S BEST!!
As a anthropologist and archaeologist wannabe since childhood, the book tops anything I've ever read about incan culture. The 223 page book has 3 chapters, 53 illustrations, 15 photographs and is written in a detailed yet easy to understand way for us non-scientists. Realm Of The Incas begins with incan historical/geographical background, proceeding to the people and their appearance, language, daily life and everything it entails. I am very impressed by how much information Von Hagen managed to pack into such a small book.So all you wannabes READ THIS BOOK!!

Product Description
The Inca civilization began as a tribe in the Cuzco area, where the legendary first Sapa Inca, Manco Capac founded the Kingdom of Cuzco around 1200. Under the leadership of the descendants of Manco Capac, the Inca state grew to absorb other Andean communities. In 1442, the Incas began a far-reaching expansion under the command of Patchacuti. He founded the Inca Empire (Tawantinsuyu), which became the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. The empire was split by a civil war to decide who would be Inca Hanan and who would be Inca Hurin (Hanan and Hurin represent the families of the higher parts of the city (Hanan) and those of the lower parts (Hurin) it is believed that one of the brothers was from Hanan Cuzco and the other from Hurin Cuzco as they where part of the family of their mothers), which pitted the brothers Huascar and Atahualpa against each other. In 1533, Spanish Conquistadores led by Francisco Pizarro, took advantage of this situation and conquered much of the existing Inca territory. ... Read more

All Christian priests that followed the Spanishconquest of Peru by Francisco Pizarro burned the records ofthe Inca culture. Product Description
In 1911, a young historian set out on a quest that would later be regarded as one of the most important expeditions in the history of the National Geographic Society. With breathless enthusiasm and an unquenchable thirst for adventure, Hiram Bingham followed rumor after rumor in search of a lost city, through unspoiled mountain villages and the treacherous Peruvian highlands. An experienced traveler, Bingham thought nothing of riding mules along nearly inaccessible mountain paths and scaling steep mountainsides. But nothing could have prepared him for the moment when, after crossing a rope bridge suspended 2,000 feet above a raging river and climbing a harrowing precipice, he came upon stone-faced terraces climbing up a hillside, leading to a plaza with two temples. "The sight held me spellbound," declared Bingham at the sight of the once great city. He had found Machu Picchu.

Bingham’s astonishing tale includes observations of ancient traditions and architecture as seen through the eyes of a young man fascinated by the archaeology, landscape, and history of Peru—a land and a people now lost in time. The incredible story of an amazing adventure, Inca Land is a thrilling chronicle of a legendary explorer’s crowning discovery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Always the Unexpected
A trip through Peru nearly a century ago that is as compelling now as when Bingham wrote the book. We are always looking for something we know is 'out there'. Hiram Bingham not only found what he was searching for, but the added surprise experience of seeing the breath taking beauty of Macchu Picchu. The reader is not lost in the words on a page, but lost in the Sacred Valley, the spectacular mountains, the indigenous peoples and the wonder of explorers such as Bingham.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reprint of earlier book?
This looks like a reprint of the original work by Bingham about his "discovery" of Machu Picchu. I read the original 40 years ago, and it sparked a lasting desire to go see this place for myself. I finally made it, and it is all I imagined it to be. If this is, indeed, a reprinting of Bingham's original expeditions, they are facinating period pieces full of the hardships of exploring before tourism, basic amenities, travel health care, much less maps. Machu Picchu was, of course, not lost to the Inca descendants, only to the White educated explorers from afar, so Bingham didn't really "discover" it, but he certainly publicized it and Yale helped!

Product Description
In the academic fields of mythology, mythography, or folkloristics, a myth (mythos) is a sacred story concerning the origins of the world or how the world and the creatures in it came to be in their present form. The active beings in myths are generally gods and heroes. Myths often are said to take place before recorded history begins. In saying that a myth is a sacred narrative, what is meant is that a myth is believed to be true by people who attach religious or spiritual significance to it. Use of the term by scholars does not imply that the narrative is either true or false. See also legend and tale.

A myth in popular use is something that is widely thought to be false. This usage, which is often pejorative, arose from labeling the religious myths and beliefs of other cultures as being incorrect, but it has spread to cover non-religious beliefs as well. Because of this usage, many people take offense when the religious narratives they believe to be true are called myths (see Religion and mythology for more information). This usage is frequently confused with legend, fiction, fairy tale, folklore, fable, and urban legend, each of which has a distinct meaning in academia.

It should be known that myths have historical points in them an example of this would be Homers The Odyssey where a young prince leaves to goto fight in the Trojan War. The Trojan War as we know is a historical point in time however, the odds of said prince with the same name are unlikely but even more unlikely than the various beings he meets on his extended trip to get home.

Urban myth is an alternate (not academic) term for urban legend

A myth is something that is born from truth, but not necessarily 100% true. Ancient peoples used myths to explain things usually in nature that they could not understand. For example- Anc ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good down to earth summary of the subject
The book, written by a small interdisciplinary team, has clearly benefitted from this cooperation. It provides an excellent overview of Inca astronomy as reported in Spanish documentary sources, which are put to the test by first-hand astronomical and archaeological observations. It also carefully examines some of the currently dominant yet more speculative approaches to the subject. Very much recommended.Fred Spier

Product Description

Historians have long recognized that the classical heritage of ancient Rome contributed to the development of a vibrant society in Spanish South America, but was the impact a one-way street? Although the Spanish destruction of the Incan empire changed the Andes forever, the civil society that did emerge was not the result of Andeans and Creoles passively absorbing the wisdom of ancient Rome. Rather, Sabine MacCormack proposes that civil society was born of the intellectual endeavors that commenced with the invasion itself, as the invaders sought to understand an array of cultures. Looking at the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century people who wrote about the Andean region that became Peru, MacCormack reveals how the lens of Rome had a profound influence on Spanish understanding of the Incan empire.

Tracing the varied events that shaped Peru as a country, MacCormack shows how Roman and classical literature provided a framework for the construal of historical experience. She turns to issues vital to Latin American history, such as the role of language in conquest, the interpretation of civil war, and the founding of cities, to paint a dynamic picture of the genesis of renewed political life in the Andean region. Examining how missionaries, soldiers, native lords, and other writers employed classical concepts to forge new understandings of Peruvian society and history, the book offers a complete reassessment of the ways in which colonial Peru made the classical heritage uniquely its own.
