This book highlights the areas in whichimmunological mechanisms are now known to be involved in disorders of the ears, nose and throat. These include the normal defence mechanisms of the upper respiratory tract, the immunology of the tonsils and failures of immunity, such as fungal infections, granulomatous disorders and malignancies. Disorders of the middle and inner ear are considered, as are nasal polyposis and various aspects of allergy: allergic rhinitis, and food sensitivity in relation to the nose and allergy. A final chapter deals with the future prospects for immunological involvement in ENT disorders. The volume provides interesting insights, with possible novel therapeutic approaches, not only to otorhinolaryngologists, but also to audiologists, allergists and respiratory physicians. It also provides an up-to-date background for any immunological researcher in this field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Case Studies in Immunology: A Clinical Companion (Geha, Case Studies in Immunology: A Clinical Companion)
It was in excellent condition even with the few underlined sections or highlighted parts, in my opinion those only make text books more valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a second pass at immunology
My use of this book is probably a little different from most of the other reviewers here.My medical school immunology course used a different book (Lippincott's Immunology, which is passable); a year later, while studying for my USMLE step 1, I didn't want to waste time re-reading the basics in a textbook (i.e. I didn't need to read a 20-page chapter about the difference between innate and adaptive immunity).I also wasn't satisfied with the level of detail in my review books, which were fine for physiology but very weak in describing genetic immunodeficiency syndromes.

That's the benefit of this book-- the basics are there, but are integrated into cases alongside more "advanced" concepts. If you already have a good grasp on basic immunology (adaptive vs. innate, B vs. T, CD4 vs. CD8, Th1 vs. Th2), this is a much easier way to learn the complexities of immunodeficiency syndromes or autoimmune diseases (most of the cases in this book are one or the other). As such, I would definitely recommend using this book for a boards review of immunology (if you can spare a day or two from your review schedule to read it-- it's about 300 pages). It covers ALL the relevant immunology-- I can't imagine being surprised by an immuno question on test day if you know what's in here.

That said, I would NOT recommend this book as a starting point for learning immunology (and based on some of the other reviews here, that is unfortunately how it has occasionally been used). This was never meant to be a stand-alone immunology text, and I honestly can't imagine why it would be assigned as the text for an undergraduate introductory course. There are several good introductory immunology books out there-- the one I used is Sompayrac's "How the Immune System Works," but you have lots of choices.Once you have the basics, though, this book is excellent for making the jump to clinical immunology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Companion text for any immunology course

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This is an excellent book on the subject. The only catch for me is that, if you are abolutely new to immunology, this book might be a little confusing at first. You have to be able to understand some basic terminology to work with this book, once you have it going through the book is absolutely pain free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not touch this book!
The text is confusing, very baddly structured and hard to read. Because of the many different authors, the text is not concise. The diagrams and tables are often unprecise, leaving you with even more questions instead of answers. The book is a absolutely not the wright choice for learning immunology. For that I recomend Alberts: MBOC (immunology chapters) and Abbas 5th ed., which are much better books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immunology by Ivan Roitt - Still the best!
I used an earlier edition of this text to study for Pathology board examinations (with the American College of Veterinary Pathology), and found it readily understandable (for someone with a veterinary degree and Master's degree in pathology) and well-laid out. I was so pleased that I purchased this recently for an associate starting a Ph.D. The text has chapters covering general immunology, evolution of the immune system, species differences, and essentials for understanding most aspects of immunology, from cytokines to cells to roles in infectious disease and cancer. The new edition incorporates recent information while retaining the basic flow. Altogether, this is still the best text on the subject that I have seen! ... Read more

While some Schaum's outlines are comprehensive enough to sufficiently replace introductory textbooks (Schaum's Genetics is a good example), Schaum's Immunology is not among these. This outline is formatted in a question and answer style that is well suited for review before exams. The outline does not make a good stand alone resource for independent study, however it is great as a supplementary study-aid.So while I do recommend this book for those taking a first course in immunology, I wouldn't depend on it to allow you to throw out your regular textbook or start missing lectures. ... Product Description

In 2007, Texas governor Rick Perry issued an executive order requiring that all females entering sixth grade be vaccinated against the human papillomavirus (HPV), igniting national debate that echoed arguments heard across the globe over public policy, sexual health, and the politics of vaccination. Three Shots at Prevention explores the contentious disputes surrounding the controversial vaccine intended to protect against HPV, the most common sexually transmitted infection.

When the HPV vaccine first came to the market in 2006, religious conservatives decried the government's approval of the vaccine as implicitly sanctioning teen sex and encouraging promiscuity while advocates applauded its potential to prevent 4,000 cervical cancer deaths in the United States each year. Families worried that laws requiring vaccination reached too far into their private lives. Public health officials wrestled with concerns over whether the drug was too new to be required and whether opposition to it could endanger support for other, widely accepted vaccinations. Many people questioned the aggressive marketing campaigns of the vaccine's creator, Merck & Co. And, since HPV causes cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, and anus, why was the vaccine recommended only for females? What did this reveal about gender and sexual politics in the United States? With hundreds of thousands of HPV-related cancer deaths worldwide, how did similar national debates in Europe and the developing world shape the global possibilities of cancer prevention?

This volume provides insight into the deep moral, ethical, and scientific questions that must be addressed when sexual and social politics confront public health initiatives in the United States and around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended
very informative, comprehensive book. figures are explaining many things even though you dont read the text. i recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, way to detailed for med school
This book was required for my medical school immunology course. Our professor assigned the book to read in about a week and a half, rediculous! Few people read it. I used it as a reference source. To learn the material on a first pass, I recommend Review of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Tenth Edition (LANGE Basic Science) and I'm sure the new edition would be even better. Even Lange will only get you started, as it leaves out a lot of detail and leaves some questions unanswered.

In summary, use Lange to get a good USMLE high-yield baseline then either hope you have a good professor to teach the material ( like I had) or dig through this book to answer any burning questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classical text in molecular immunology
I am familiar with this textbook since the 3rd edition. I consider this textbook one of the leading (if not the best) for the field of molecular immunology. The organization and structure of chapters differs from those in, for example, Janeway's Immunobiology, but this falls into personal preference and needs. This book is food for undergraduates, graduates and professionals who want to learn immunology from more biological and less clinical perspective. I work in cancer research, however I use this book frequently - it is very useful to get info related to different aspects of cancer research: immunotherapy, immunobiology of tumors, tumor microenvironment, etc. In addition, this textbook is one of the most affordable books. After bying the book, one can use the book's website, where it is possible, for example, to download images, which is very practical for presentations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A most readable and yet comprehensive book
This text is appropriate both for the novice and for the reader who is educated in the field but wants an update. The writing flows beautifully. The authors do an excellent job of identifying the most fundamental concepts and organizing the text around those basic concepts, yet there is a remarkable amount of detail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good text book
Has the plusses and minuses you'd expect from an immunology text.Covers the field, well indexed, illustrations are consistent and helpful. But Immunology is too big for a textbook to double as a handbook. The present edition is noticeably drier than the previous one because examples and sidelights have been reduced to fit the new material into a constant number of pages. ... Brucellosis is one of the most important zoonotic diseases world-wide. This book focuses on host natural resistance and innate immunity against Brucella infection. The impact of Johne's disease, a chronic, granulomatous enteritis of ruminants and some wild-type species is examined as well. In addition, the molecular and cellular mechanisms of DNA vaccines are addressed in this book, as well as the optimisation strategies that are currently pursued to harness the therapeutic and commercial advantages of DNA vaccination. Moreover, immune responses may substantially differ between conventional laboratory antigens and microbial ones. This book focuses on the experimental pulmonary tuberculosis as a convenient in vivo model to study the disease, providing important advantages over other models. Other chapters examine the defence mechanisms of several flatfish species, which is a main priority to prevent economic losses. The role of the intestine in the immune response in all vertebrates is examined as well, including its cellular components. ... Read more

I found this a very suitable text for the teaching of entry-level immunology as it is very clearly written and also amply illustrated with excellent graphics and flow diagrams. It has been a very well received settext (adopted since 1999) for the two immunology modules that we teach inour polytechnic diploma course in medical laboratory technology.Mystudents, in particular, very much like the short summaries which are inpoint form for easy revision. One possible drawback is a missing chapteron commonly used techniques in diagnostic immunology - whilst this book isnot intended as a manual of laboratory methods, we would have loved to readabout the various principles & applications, explained in the authors'succinct style, thus making it a comprehensive text. ...
