Excerpt: The Palouse is a region of the northwestern United States, encompassing parts of southeastern Washington, north central Idaho and, in some definitions, extending south into northeast Oregon. It is a major agricultural area, primarily producing wheat and legumes. Situated about 160 miles (250 kilometers) north of the Oregon Trail, the region experienced rapid growth in the late 19th century, for a brief time surpassed the population of the Puget Sound region of Washington. The region is home to two land grant universities, the University of Idaho in Moscow and Washington State University in Pullman. Located just eight miles (13 km) apart, both schools opened in the early 1890s. Palouse hills northeast of Walla Walla Palouse Hills south of the UI Arboretum in Moscow, IdahoThe origin of the name "Palouse" is unclear. One theory is that the name of the Palus tribe (spelled in early accounts variously Palus, Palloatpallah, Pelusha, et al.) was converted by French-Canadian fur traders to the more familiar French word pelouse, meaning "land with short and thick grass" or "lawn." Over time, the spelling changed to Palouse. Another theory is that the name was in the first place a French word, describing the area which was then applied to the indigenous people inhabiting it. Traditionally, the Palouse region was defined as the fertile hills and prairies north of the Snake River, which separated it from Walla Walla Country, and north of the Clearwater River, which separated it from the Camas Prairie, extending north along the Washington and Idaho border, south of Spokane, center...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=680955 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Well Done Book
As a librarian and former early childhood educator, I was very impressed with this book for several reasons.I first heard about the book while researching my family history on various Idaho Internet sites. The main reason I purchased the book is I had read that my great grandmother was in it.Upon review of the book, I was so excited about the wonderful write up about Emma Yearian, Sheep Queen of Idaho, and that an alphabet letter had been designated just to her.In addition, I was elated that I was able to share this book with my Mother, which would be her grandmother. My Mother, whom just recently turned 88, resides with me and will be purchasing more books to give away as gifts. My co-worker, 90 years of age, and who has been a librarian for years, also loved this book.He often will mention to me, with a big smile on his face, how much he likes the illustration of the big potato on the flatbed train.I especially enjoyed the beautiful water colored illustrations.I felt like I was in beautiful Idaho again.I would highly recommend this book for every school and library in the State of Idaho.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend
The cover of this book caught my attention and once I glanced inside I was completely captivated.I purchased 4 copies. One for myself and one for each of our three children - to read to our eleven grandchildren. We live in Idaho but none of them do.What a wonderful way for them to learn about our state.Additionally, I placed a copy in my piano studio. It has been reviewed by numerous students and parents. All have been extremely impressed. The format allows one to enjoy the highlights with beautiful water color illustrations or read on for more in deptgh information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book
My husband is from the Twin Falls area and we recently spent a week there. I took this book along with us for ideas on ways to pass our time. It was a great resource! Having grown up in the area, my husband was surprised by how many things were included in the book that he wasn't familiar with. We visited lots of sites that either he'd never heard of or had never bothered to visit. We both had a great time exploring southcentral Idaho with this book as our guide. In fact, I'm going to look for an Off the Beaten Path book for the area I currently live in (Alaska) to see what we're missing here at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good little guidebook
If you're unfamiliar with Idaho, I would opine that its most outstanding characteristic for the tourist is its clean, clear, white-water wilderness rivers: the Salmon (River of No Return), Snake, Selway, and others. There isn't anyplace in the world that can boast of better and more beautiful float streams.

The guidebook divides Idaho into seven regions and briefy describes interesting places to stay, old-time restaurants, museums and art galleries, annual events, and assorted trivia. Sidebars recount stories of places and people, including Ernest Hemingway, the Nez Perce Indians, and the infamous Ruby Ridge. This guidebook is light and small and well-organized and has all the information you need to find your way to interesting spots around the state, especially if you're the sort of person who's allergic to cute boutiques and cookie-cutter hotels and restaurants. This is the guidebook series that my wife and I carry when we travel in the United States -- but if you're visiting Idaho for the wilderness experience you'll need additional information to what is offered here.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good guide for a great place
This book is a WONDERFUL resource!I was raised in Idaho, and it contains places even I hadn't heard about. The book details many of Idaho's beauties that the locals normally know about, but a visitor might not notice or be aware of. It isn't the most in-depth place to find information about neat places in idaho, but it is a "must read" for people who want to make their visit to Idaho special and unique. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Julia Davis Park is the first park in the "string of pearls", the public park system found running through the middle of Boise, Idaho. It is centrally located within the city of Boise and is bordered by Broadway Avenue to the east, Capital Boulevard to the west, the Boise River to the south, and Myrtle Street to the north. Found on its grounds are a number of prominent sites that are important to both the history of Boise and to present culture. The Park includes three nationally accredited museums: the Boise Art Museum, the Idaho Black History Museum, and the Idaho State Historical Museum. Also located in the park are the Idaho Rose Society, Zoo Boise, the Gene Harris Band Shell, and a lush Rose Garden. The park itself exhibits several works of art such as a 2002 statue by Jerry Snodgrass memorializing the pioneers who passed through the area including Julia Davis. Additionally, the Park has access to the Boise River, recreational sites such as a playground and tennis court, the Greenbelt, a pond, and a pedestrian bridge over the river connecting the park with Boise State University. The park was founded in 1907 by Thomas Jefferson Davis and named after his wife. Julia Davis Park has its roots in the 1862 journey of two orphans, Thomas and Frank Davis, from the city of Cincinnati, Ohio with hopes of joining in the widely publicized gold rush in the Idaho territory. The brothers came west and settled in the Boise Basin where they staked a claim and mined for a year. In 1863, they built a cabin along Cottonwood Creek near the site of the present Julia Davis Park.
