5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what this adult hockey student needed!
Ok, so I'm over 40 and have just been learning how to "hockey skate" and now I find myself in my first hockey "skills & drills" class at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex, practice ice/facility of the Washington Capitals. This class is so popular, that it sells out well in advance and many of the 35+ students are repeats (as I will be for the next session).

I was lost - I'm not enough of a life-long hockey fan or past player who already understood the fundamentals and so many of the guys and gals already knew what they were doing.I felt like if I asked simple questions I'd be disrupting the flow of the class (shouldn't be that way, I know, but it's how I felt). So I bought a couple of books to bridge the gap in my ignorance.

I am SO PLEASED with this book - it was exactly what I was looking for! Chapter by chapter, it breaks hockey play down into the essential elements I needed to understand - offense, defense, positions, strategy, scenario-based plays, etc.It also went over several drills which means that when they were introduced in class, I had already been exposed to them in writing.

In the locker room after the second class, another newbie expressed the same concerns I was having.I shared my book with him and when he returned it the next week, it was like a veil had been lifted for him, too.I'm going to recommend that the instructors provide a copy of this book to every newbie, every session!

If you like to read an auto repair manual that breaks down the way an engine works or a computer/tech book that explains in plain English how to use your computer or build a web page, then you'll love this book, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Learn From
This book is truly a very good book for learning how to play the wonderful game of hockey both at the beginner level and advanced level. At the beginner level it shows and tell you how to skate, stop turn, foward and backward crossovers. It also has rules of the game which are especially helpful for the beginner level. It has drills that one should perform to get better. For the intermediate through advanced level it has even more drillsand techniques that even the beginners should get to know.It shows how to shoot the puck defensive, offensive and even goalie tactics. It has a conditioning with nutrition chapter, pregame stretches and even the mental game. And finally at the end it even tells you how to build a rink and how to organize and coach a team.Even if you think you know everything about hockey I can almost guarantee you there is something in this 220 page hockey-training masterpiece.I've been playing for only two years and I have learned a ton from this book and you will most definitely too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide for new players
I've bought about 7 or 8 books on various aspects of hockey over the pastfew weeks, and each has taught me something, but I really needed one thatcould tell me *how the game is played* -- where I'm supposed to be and whatI'm supposed to be doing in different situations. This book did just thatby explaining the basics of offense and defense with both text andeasy-to-follow diagrams. I have a good overall sense of the game now, aswell as specific admonishments to keep in mind (like not to chase a puckcarrier behind the goal, and not to follow crisscrossing forwards whenbackchecking). I plan to read this book again in a month (after I've playeda few games on an organized team), and I fully expect to absorb even more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners learning the basics of ice hockey.
My team, the San Francisco Earthquakes, has several beginner players. Most of them had been to beginner hockey classes, but they still didn't know many of the basics. I set out to find a book that would provide these basiclessons and answer many of the new players' questions. I looked at severalbooks, but this one had the best fit. It is written for beginners, but willalso serve experienced players who need to review the basics. What to do,where to be, how to shoot, when to pass? These questions and many more areall answered clearly and simply. This is a book for beginners. Intermediateand advanced players may be looking for more insight than this bookprovides. My teammates now know what to do most of the time. If they'd onlyskate a little harder... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
I found this book informative and a concise source. As a hockey coaching neophyte, and a dedicated student of the game, I believe Chambers did a good job on his book. Many of the chapters could be (and are) the subject of a dedicated book.

The first chapter on PHILOSPOHY OF COACHING is a very good and complements the USA Hockey philosophy. His chapter on BASIC HOCKEY GUIDELINES presents an excellent, concise, overview of the principles of the game.

The chapter on SKATING presents good overview for a subject very difficult to teach out of a book (see POWER SKATING by Laura Stamm for an excellent book on this subject).

In the ten or so books I have recently reviewed and read in my journey to learn more about hockey, I observed authors often appear to find it difficult to provide an overview that introduces the subject and gives a proper discussion of the fundamental (the why). There is often an underlying presupposition of knowledge that may not exist.Chambers does not fall into that trap.

In Chamber's chapters on OFFENSIVE/ DEFENSIVE TEAM PLAY, he introduces principles and terms specific the subject, and then presents drills that emphasize that aspect to players. In later chapters on PLAY OF THE DEFENSEMEN/FORWARDS, he presents useful tips and skills for these players.

The chapter on FACE OFF ALIGNMENTS is the best I have seen.At a recent practice, our senior coach was teaching players where to move if they were in offensive or defensive zones.I came back from practice hungry to learn more and could not find a reference that covered more that a few scenarios (including USA Hockey).Chambers presents 11 strategies/player assignments for offensive zone face offs, 7 for neutral zone, and 11 for defensive zone; covering full strength and one or two man short situations.

There are chapters on PENALTY KILLING, POWER PLAYS, AND GOAL TENDING.I enjoyed the concise coverage in the chapter on SCOUTING, GAME PREPARATION, AND BENCH MANAGEMENT chapter.

The chapter on STATISTICS presents an overview of the importance of each statistic, and emphasizes the need to use them POSTIVELY.He also discusses the importance of videotaping games, and balances his discussion with a warning to use statistics and videos wisely.

The chapter on CONDITIONING is a good overview that includes the three energy systems and importance of periodization (see references by Tudor Bompa for more details on energy systems and periodization.See especially "Total Hockey Conditioning: From Pee-Wee to Pro" and "Total Training for Young Champions")

The chapter on NUTRITION is balanced and presents a good overview of carbohydrates, fats, and protein and how the body uses them.He also emphasizes hydration (see Strength, Conditioning and Injury Prevention for Hockey by Joseph Horrigan, Earl Joseph Kreis for a great discussion on hydration).

There is also chapter on MENTAL TRAINING.If you've watched the shift of momentum during an NHL game, or better yet felt it when you're on the bench, you can appreciate the importance of this aspect of sports.

Chambers book has a large bibliography, although the chapters are not scientifically cited to individual references. The book lacks an index, but it is well organized.

After having recently read the USA Hockey series for coaches (Mite through Pee Wee), they were useful, but disjointed because they were obviously written by a committee of authors and often not edited for consistency. In their recent updates, they often refer to figures that are not present, use undefined terms, have symbols on the drill diagrams that don't match previous drills, and have other inconsistencies. There is good information presented if you get beyond the inconsistencies.

In my opinion, hockey is such a complex and fast moving sport that it is difficult to capture the many nuances in the pages of a book.In my search for a book that provides a one-stop reference, Chambers comes the closest.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT SO COMPLETE
While this book may abound in drills, very little attention is paid to discussing positional play, and what benefit is derived by each position from these drills. At best this book is geared to the elite level coach who already has an indepth understanding of the game and is only looking for something new to use in practices.

To the neophyte coach, I would suggest taking the USA Hockey coaching certification clinics or, at the least, buying their coaching manuals which have a detailed reasoning behind each skill development drill.

Ultimately the job of the coach is to develop the player's skills, and unfortunately Complete Hockey Instruction does nothing to help the coach in this regard. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars tHE iNCREDIBLE hOCKEY dRILL bOOK
Excellent resource book.It covers all skill levels, ages and will make a fine addition to the avid Ice Hockey player or coach. If you can't find a drill in this book that will help you take up figure skating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Drills drills drills...Awsome book for a beginner coach
This book is full of drills. I believe after looking through it that I could coach a team with the way it lays things out for you and shows you how to manage a practice. It has slogans for getting motivation and a bunch of other handy coach type things. Thats only the first chapter or two. After that there is hundreds of drills for all sorts of situations. They break out each type of skill (skating, shooting, passing, checking, etc...) and give 20 to 30 drills for each skill. Each drill comes with illustration, an explanation, and variations to throw into the drill to mix it up. I only got this book to help me get some drills to do to practice but after looking through it I believe it would be a great addition to any coach or wannabe coaches library. This would be perfect for the beginner coach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I use this many times a season to grab a drill or two when needed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent drill book!
As a coach of a club level 11-up girl's team, this book is the "go to" book for drills for skating, stick handling, shooting, etc.The drills are described in detail, and each one has a drawing to make explanations to the players more simple. This is the book I refer to the most, (second only to the USA Hockey info) for coming up with practice plans and season goals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ice Hockey
I found the book to be everything i had hoped for.Being a new fan to the sport of ice hockey i loved watching, but knew i would enjoy it much more if i knew the rules. This book supplied all the knowledge you need to know about what is going on out there on the ice.It truly enhanced my appreciation of the sport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
As a brand new Ontario Reign fan (ECHL) I've been enjoying the games, but realized I don't know what's going on 1/2 the time (not that I REALLY minded). But now I feel I have a good idea why some of the 'strange' stuff I've seen is being done. Makes more sense to me now. I can't wait for the next game, and I'll start to see how much more of it I will catch now. It's such a fast game, it still make take me a bit, but at least I have a head start now.
Not for anyone who has a clue, but perfect for those of us itching to get one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for an introduction to hockey
Needs to be updated to reflect significant rule changes in NHL in last 3 years, but otherwise it is a good introduction to hockey.Has lots of good, clearillustrations. The greatest value of this book is the illustrations of referee signals since when watching amateur hockey or league hockey the ref's signal is not announced over a PA system. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good story about a teen hockey player.
ge. No matter how dangerous hockey is and how many concussions Nick receives, he continues to play. Between hockey and his girlfriend, Nick's life is good. Then, Nick receives another concussion, his fourth one in fact by keeping his head down, his number one habit. This concussion is not like the others, and Nick may never play hockey again. If Nick loses hockey, his life, then what else is left for him?

When I began reading Open Ice, I was a bit apprehensive because I had heard few things about it. Basically, all I knew was that the book was a coming-of-age novel about hockey. I like coming-of-age and hockey, so I figured I would give it a way. Luckily, I thought Open Ice was a good novel. Pat Hughes did a great job characterizing Nick. He was an incredibly realistic character, and I enjoyed the way Hughes portrayed him after his concussion. That's not to say I agreed with his actions, but his actions seemed like the way many guys would have reacted to being told to say goodbye to their favorite sport. Hughes also did a great job portraying Nick's parents. When dealt with Nick's situation, they acted in a responsible manner, without seeming cheesy.

The only character I had a complaint about was Devin, Nick's girlfriend. She's a stereotypical girl who only wants to date a star hockey player, and Nick is completely smitten (in the beginning at least). I think Hughes could have developed Devin more, while still keeping her general persona. Devin was just so blaaah, and aside from looks, I could not see any reason Nick dated her. At times, I also thought Hughes tried to push to appealing to teens too much. The smoking pot and Daves Matthews Band seemed forced at times. Overall, however, Open Ice is a wonderful portrayal of dealing with life after a sport injury.

I would recommend Open Ice to anyone looking for a coming-of-age that reveals the hardships of leaving a favorite sport.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really Disappointing
This book is garbage. It gets 1 star for creative effort. The book is rife with 15 year olds drinking (in front of other parents with their permission as well as their own parents), smoking pot, having sex, bigoted remarks and swearing at their parents.I'm no Pat Boone, but I gave this to my 15 year old son who also plays hockey and had a concussion.I read it after he did and was disgusted in myself for giving it to him.Really surprised Random House published this. The plot was really lame too.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a great book, but I wouldn't recommend it for kids 11 and under because of inaproprit things, onther than that it was good
If you are looking for a great book check out open ice.
The things I liked most about this book is that it had to do with my favorit sport hoskey, and the was exactly how a teen aged hockey layer would act. The things I diden't like was that if you don't know much about hockey you wouldn't understand it, and theres a lot of inaproprit things.
This book is about a teen Nick Tagilo the best hockey player on his high school hockey team that can't play due to a brain ingery he got from being blind sided, but to Nick hockey wasn't just a sport, it was his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars She shoots - she scores!!!
Fast-paced literary skater Pat Hughes showed that she is comfortable on the ice of writing and definitely a senior member of the varsity team
in her latest book Open Ice. She deftly negotiates the delicate edge-of-the-blade teenage dialogue while skating backwards and making it look easy. This sports reader's attention was glued to every page-turning play of her game even ruining his planned Sunday afternoon nap which was replaced by reading the last 160 pages of Open Ice.
>
>I loved this book. Hughes placed me directly in the midst of these people and their thoughts. I feel like I know them and, the ultimate sign of great writing, I wonder what they are doing now that I've finished reading the book. Not only does Hughes think like a teenager but, as she's done in her previous books Guerrilla Season and Breaker Boys, she comes across like an authentic teenage guy! This book felt like it was told to me by Nick himself, a little wiser, more mature, but definitely by the guy who lived the experience.
>
>And then the layers...When Devin was distancing herself from Nick and
>urging him to pressure his parents to play again I thought I was SO smart that I could see right through her motives. I had her pegged for what she was. Then I smiled as it occurred to me that I get NO credit for my revelation. Hughes had me right where she wanted me. Seeing only what she wanted me to see. But then at the after-game party when the details about her and Ramsey came out I stopped hating her and felt bad for her instead. Her intentions were not as clear as I had been ready for them to be earlier in the book. Hughes didn't take the easy literary route and stop at Devin being a hockey groupie. She had deeper problems and insecurities. I rode the roller coaster that Hughes laid out for me and what a great ride it was!
>
Every family of a traumatic brain injurypatient should read this book. My heart skipped a beat when Nick accidentally sent the Instant Message to the wrong person knowing that he would never have done that prior to the concussion, and knowing that it was the tip of the iceberg of his problems. As he became more contentious and more aggressive and
impulsive I was scared for the fallout. And sure enough it came. The standoff between Nick and his Dad was stressful. Working around rehab I have seen the disintegration of many marriages and families because the TBI patient "isn't who he used to be". This book has the power to let others have a peek inside the mind of a person suffering from post-concussive syndrome.

Hughes is a talented, authentic and entertaining writer. With this one she's also done a great service to the community of families living with mild brain injury patients.

4-0 out of 5 stars Captures the politics of teenage life
I thought Pat Hughes captured perfectly the politics of teenage life.Setting her novel in the world of school sports enhances its themes of relationships, friendship, love and personal growth.I truly enjoyed Open Ice.

4-0 out of 5 stars EUROPEAN FAN LIKES IT
You know i really liked this book just because of that its nice to see great european players past and present in this book. unlike other books where it's just nhl players, this book has both nhl players and european players included. As a international hockey historian i really enjoyed it. gretzky-kharlamov-nedomansky-salming and many other great players are in this book. the price is my only problem with the book, it cost some bucks.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a pleasure
The best hockey book I’ve ever seen!!!

A friend of mine showed me this book.. What a pleasure!!!
I was so impressed. Not only by its appearance, but also by the quality and amount of information compiled. Not to mention unique photos. Then I saw a review of it on the Amazon.ca by
Mr. Peter Adler with a title “Do not waste your money”. Why ?! wondered. He said he reviewed it also for ‘The Edmonton Journal’.
(Why should he review it twice ?) So I surfed the archives of this journal and found an awkward style of a review using inadequate words such as : “extremely sloppy”, “rubbish”, “flop”, “fatal flaw” etc. What did he found in the 1020 pages of the book ?-May be a misspelled player name and two wrong dates???… Give me a break. He says : “Authors and editors should be ashamed of themselves”.Is it also because it is "beautifull" too??I say: shame on you Mr. Adler. Your style reflects your character. And I ask - WHAT IS HIS HIDDEN AGENDA ??

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not waste your money
I read this book because I had to: I was reviewing it for The Edmonton Journal. My conclusion is simple and straightforward: while beautiful, this book is so filled with glaring mistakes, howlers and omissions, its authors and editors should be ashamed of themselves. In fact, if it were possible, I would give this volume no stars at all: the first thing a book on history must have is its facts right. ... Read more

I barrowed "complete conditioning for ICE hockey" and really liked it.I bought "complete conditioning for hockey" thinking it was the same book, but found this newer version too complicated, lacking useful information, and missing useful information present in the previous version.I don't recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars My neighbour won't give it back to me
I'm an over 40 player and bought this hoping to get some conditioning tips.As I was looking it over, my neighbour, a trainer at Golds asked if she could borrow it.She's using it with her clients and won't give it back - 2 months now.Now I have to buy another one for me.It has the excerise routines she feels are right for hockey conditioning.

The most comprehensive guide to the art and science of goaltending

The past decade has seen a tremendous surge of interest in hockey. More colleges and universities have added programs. Hockey leagues are sprouting up in such unlikely places as Florida beach communities, New Mexico desert towns, and the Texas flatlands.

Coauthored by Jim Corsi, goaltending coach for the Buffalo Sabres, The Hockey Goalie's Handbook is the most comprehensive guide to mastering the most demanding hockey position: goalie. Drawing upon his extensive coaching experience at all levels--from peewees to pros--Corsi explores all facets of goaltending. From the psychology of being a goalie to choosing and purchasing the right equipment for an individual's style and needs, to drills for improving timing, coordination, reach, and speed, Corsi covers all the bases with invaluable advice and guidance as well as tips and techniques for aspiring goalies, parents, and hockey coaches. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great book for hockey moms
My son is 8 and just started playing goalie.I had NO experience with goalie equipment, skills or drills and being his assistant coach I was at a bit of a loss.
This book was recommended by a great senior goalie (50 year old female!!) and she was RIGHT ON.It covers everything one needs to know about goalies from head to toe.It has great drills and kid pics so the little guys can look at the picture and understand.
Of course being from Buffalo, we are huge Sabres fans so all of the pictures of past Sabre's goalies are GREAT!
I would recommend this book for young, old, new, expert and anyone who is interested in the position of netminder!

5-0 out of 5 stars A high school coach's opinion
This book along with Hockey Goaltending by Brian Daccord will provide enough information and differences of opinion for anyone from beginner to the high school level. The drills are very good and the "Ten Things" lists provide lots of insight.I can't recommend one book over the other because they complement each other so well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners, wish there was more
This book is an amazing general overview of becoming a goaltender. the beginning of the books is more-or-less common sense for goaltenders that are already playing, but the middle of the books and the drills at the end serve as a great refresher course. If your a beginner, this book is great. If you want a refresher course in goaltending, you should also buy this. I believe that the only thing lacking in this book is a more in depth section on equipement. Not everyone understands what they are supposed to be looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch!
I used to play hockey when I was much younger and now that I am getting back into it, I wanted to get as many books and videos as possible to remember the old skills and to find out how much has changed since I used to play. Of all the books that I bought and read, this one was the best in my opinion. I felt that it went deeper into the "How's and Why's" of techniques than Hockey Goaltending by Brian Daccord, which is my second favourite book. The way that Jim Corsi presented the concept of the Goaltender's "toolbox" was excellent for getting the information to stick in my head.

Bravo, and thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Endorsements
Several testimonials provided to the authors and publisher that are sure to be of interest.

Jim Corsi and John Hannon have written the most comprehensive goalie book I have ever seen.Jim has a great grasp of goaltender coaching and how the goaltending position has radically changed over the last decade.I, too, would encourage young goalies to study the game and learn as much as they can.

- Dominik Hasek, Buffalo Sabres & Detroit Red Wings

The approach to goaltending that Jim and John describe in this book has helped me understand the position better. As a head coach, I need to know that our goalies are well taken care of.Jim is both well liked and well respected by all of our goalies (from prospects to all-stars).Given the rich content of this book and the authors' attention to the smallest details, it is no wonder Jim is held in such high regard.

- Lindy Ruff, Buffalo Sabres

In order for me to make the big jumps from major junior to the AHL and then the AHL to the NHL, it became increasingly obvious that I had to expand upon my save skill repertoire.Jim Corsi, applying the concepts he and John Hannon cover in this book, helped me improve and successfully make this transition. If you, too, seek to become a serious student of the goalie position, then read this book cover to cover. It will change your whole philosophy about goaltending and make you more and more effective.

Product Description
One of the oldest beliefs in racing is that it takes several years of track time before a young driver gains the experience needed to win at the NASCAR Winston Cup Series level. That notion, however, has been shattered over the last 10 years, due in large part to four-time Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon.

Gordon didn't win a single race during his rookie season, 1993.But in the years that followed many team owners, who had been relying on veteran racers, began to add young, unproven drivers to their teams.Gordon's third full season on tour saw him pick up seven victories to edge the late Dale Earnhardt by a mere 34 points and win first Winston Cup championship.

At that point, fans, the media, and team owners couldn't help but notice the sport's young drivers, who were eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get a Winston Cup ride.Gordon, now 31 years old, opened many doors for the young guns who have become a huge factor in Winston Cup racing.

If skeptics still found it hard to acknowledge the youth trend, they could no longer ignore it when Tony Stewart entered the Winston Cup scene during the 1999 season. He had the greatest rookie year in history with three victories and a third place finish in the final point standings.

During the following season, the 2000 campaign, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Kenseth engaged in one of the greatest Rookie-of-the-Year battles in Winston Cup history. The young Earnhardt scored two victories and Kenseth earned one, but Kenseth edged his close friend and fellow competitor for the top rookie award.

After the last-lap crash at the Daytona 500 that claimed the life of seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt, Kevin Harvick moved up to NASCAR's top rank during 2001 as a driver for veteran team owner Richard Childress. In a painful season for many, Harvick picked up two wins and finished ninth in the final point standings to easily win top rookie honors over Kurt Busch.

The fight for the 2002 Winston Cup Rookie-of-the-Year award is down to first-year drivers Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman. While Johnson picked up two victories early in the season and is in position to become the first rookie driver to win a Winston Cup title, Newman has also had a great year. It's a rookie battle that won't likely be decided until the checkered flag is thrown at this year's season finale in Miami.

Race fans and the public now know that these young guns are a major factor in NASCAR Winston Series racing. These up-and-coming stars appear poised to help carry the sport into the future. ... Read more
