Product Description
This edition is written in English. However, there is a running Hungarian thesaurus at the bottom of each page for the more difficult English words highlighted in the text. There are many editions of A History of English Literature. This edition would be useful if you would like to enrich your Hungarian-English vocabulary, whether for self-improvement or for preparation in advanced of college examinations. Webster's edition of this classic is organized to expose the reader to a maximum number of difficult and potentially ambiguous English words. Rare or idiosyncratic words and expressions are given lower priority compared to "difficult, yet commonly used" English words. Rather than supply a single translation, many words are translated for a variety of meanings in Hungarian, allowing readers to better grasp the ambiguity of English without using the notes as a pure translation crutch. Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. This edition is helpful to Hungarian-speaking students enrolled in an English Language Program (ELP), an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, an English as a Second Language Program (ESL), or in a TOEFL® or TOEIC® preparation program. Students who are actively building their vocabularies in Hungarian or English may also find this useful for Advanced Placement® (AP®) tests. TOEFL®, TOEIC®, AP® and Advanced Placement® are trademarks of the Educational Testing Service which has neither reviewed nor endorsed this book. This book is one of a series of Webster's paperbacks that allows the reader to obtain more value from the experience of reading. Translations are from Webster's Online Dictionary, derived from a meta-analysis of public sources, cited on the site. ... Read more

The volume fills a gap in scholarship about Imre Kertesz, whose work to date is largely unknown in the English-speaking world. The papers' authors are scholars from the US, Canada, the UK, Hungary, Germany, and New Zealand. In addition to the papers, the volume contains a bibliography of Kertesz's works including translations, and a bibliography of studies in several languages about his work.

Product Description
The British Library holds the largest collection of Hungarian books outside Hungary (with the exception of libraries in the former Hungarian cities of Kolozsvar, Cluj and Pozsony, Bratislava). A number of Hungarian books were included in the foundation collections of the British Museum when it was established in 1756, but systematic acquisition of Hungarian books only began in earnest with the arrival at the British Museum of Thomas Watts, in 1838. Major additions to the collections during the 19th century included the Istvan Nagy library of printed books, purchased in 1870, and the Lazlo Waltherr collection of 4000 pamphlets, in 1873, and acquisition has continued to the present day. This catalogue includes works printed in Hungary up to 1850, in whatever language, and all books published outside Hungary during that period in Hungarian, or containing a significant number of Hungarian words, such as grammars, dictionaries and other philological works.Following the principles established in earlier "Short-Title Catalogues of British Library" collections, care has been taken to discover the authorship of anonymous books, if unknown to earlier bibliographies, and the originals of translated texts. With indexes of printers and place of publication, this work should be a useful reference for anyone working in the area of Central European bibliography. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a selection of the work of Hungary's most distinguished postwar poet, Janos Pilinszky (1921-1981). This bilingual edition, comprising about one-third of Pilinszky's collected verse, represents all six of his major collections: "Trapeze and Parallel Bars", "On the Third Day", "Metropolitan Icons", "Splinters", "Denouement" and "Crater". Among the poems chosen from "Metropolitan Icons" is a complete new translation of the dramatic recitative "KZ Oratorio". All of the Holocaust poetry, as well as major, deeply personal writing, is also presented. The collection is provided with an introduction, and closes with notes on the poems, many of which solve literary puzzles and make suggestions for further study. There is a bibliography of primary and selected secondary sources, including a list of Pilinszky's work available in English. ... Read more

Product Description
" . . . Zsuzsanna Ozsvath bring[s] forth Radnoti's life, his thought, and his passion with a depth of insight that is rare in a scholar. Brilliant, penetrating, and passionate, Ozsvath's book sets a new standard of excellence in Holocaust studies." --David Patterson, The University of Memphis

In the Footsteps of Orpheus considers the life and work of Mikl--s Radn--ti, one of Hungary's greatest twentieth-century poets. It examines Radn--ti's artistic development and premonitory poetry and illuminates the intellectual ambience in which he lived. Ultimately, it follows the poet's route into the forced labor camp and on the death march, exploring both the circumstances of his murder and the impact of the atrocities he suffered on his creative imagination. ... Excerpt: Hungarian literature is literature written in the Hungarian language, predominantly by Hungarians. Hungarian literature may also include literature written in another language than Hungarian (mostly Latin) which is significant due to its Hungary-related topic or if it includes fragments in Hungarian. While virtually unknown in the Anglosphere for centuries, Hungary's literature gained renown by the end of the 20th century thanks to a new wave of internationally accessible writers like Antal Szerb, Sándor Márai, Imre Kertész and Magda Szabó. The oldest survivng poem of Hungarian language, Old Hungarian Laments of Mary Chronicon Pictum Gesta HungarorumThe beginning of the history of Hungarian language as such (and so the proto-Hungarian period) is set to 1000 B.C., when according to current scientific understanding it separated from its closest relatives, the Ob-Ugric languages. In the earliest times Hungarian language was written in a runic-like script (although it was not used for literature purposes in the modern interpretation). The country switched to the Latin alphabet after being Christianized under the reign of Stephen I (10001038). There are no existing documents from the pre-11th century era. The Old Hungarian counted from 896 A.D., when the Hungarians occupied the Carpathian Basin, settled down and started to build their own state. Not long after followed the creation of the first written extant records. The oldest written record in Hungarian is a fragment in the founding document of the Abbey of Tihany (1055) which contains sever...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=605716 ... Read more
