1-0 out of 5 stars not impressed..
much of this book was helpful, but i was immediately disappointed when i saw his foal handling techniques. most of them are cruel and unnecessary(sp?), in fact, as between us my mother and i have halter 'broken' two foals, simply by getting their trust and making halters and ropes safe, fun things. in his book he describes twisting ears, twitching, tying to a post in an covered roundyard as a way of halter breaking. although i agree that in an emergency/dangerous situation, twictching a horse may be the only way to save its life, it is not a good training solution or vet aid. definately not a book for the horse LOVER.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good.
A very good read. Would have liked more info on tack and tacking up butoverall I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book that covers everything!!!!!
This book was a wonderful source for me to look to for anything I needed to know. It also taught me many things I didn't know but needed to. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about horses!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.
This was one of the best horse books I've read.It thoroughly covers care, tack, riding, history-everything!Although it didn't give step-by-step instructions for everything, it was a complete and satisfyingbook to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful information for all horseowners.

3-0 out of 5 stars Horse Care Library Review
This CD-ROM was geared towards a person with untermediate experience with horses. Although the disk has wonderful information about choosing the correct fence and caring for wounds, it had little to no information on daily maintenance. For instance, the disk explains that for every 10 degrees below freezing you must increase feed 10% but it gives no guidelines for how much feed or what kind of feed one should use. It said little about routine vet work such as floating teeth and vaccinations. I feel it would also have been nice had it contained advice about properly fitting tack. This CD is not for beginners and the information it contains can be found in many horsecare manuals but since it is a CD the information was easily accesible. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The 'Basic' Series
I own all three of Prince and Collier's equestrian books, Basic Horse Care, Riding, and Training, and have found them to be very informative to a begining rider like myself. These authurs write in a manner that explains the content in an easy to understand way while not talking down to the reader. 4-0 out of 5 stars I recommend this book by Clark's Eye on Books

First Aid for Horse and Rider
Author:Nancy S. Loving, DVM and Gilbert Preston, M.D.
ISBN:978-1-59921-293-7,Pages 192, $12.95, Paperback, Published June 2008
The Lyons Press is an imprint of the Globe Pequot Press

As youngsters, we learned first aid in scouting to treat for simple things that we would encounter when out hiking or just at play. Here in the West we need not only to care for ourselves when it comes to treatment for injuries, but also our animals which we hold near and dear. This combination book for treatment of both horse and rider is a `must have' in the saddle bag for those emergencies which definitely arise on the trail. When in the stable, this book can serve as a great reference to recognize those simple problems you encounter.Plainly illustrated, treatment is described to render first aid while waiting for the veterinarian or doctor to provide professional care.

Both Doctors Loving and Preston are clearly experts in giving carefully thought out instructions from getting bitten by an insect to broken bones.Even though it is well indexed, a caveat is given that the reader should peruse the entire book to become familiar with what is in it.Then, when the situation arises, you can turn to the right section and save valuable time in treatment.

This book has excellent prevention tips; such as, What to Do if a Horse Won't Drink!
Several tricks are provided to entice the horse to drink. Many old hands know many of these, but for the newcomer, this advice might prove to be just that simple solution which will save on a trip to the Vet or worse yet, the Vet coming to see you!

If you are a new horse owner, an old hand, or just someone who would like to have a reference manual to have at the ranch which will give first aid advice and comfort for someone who is injured whilst waiting for the doctor, this is the book for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth is self evident...
I loved the book, but I also think it is important to read the articles available (for free) written by Dr. Mclean that are published in various places (google search; his website, the h[...], etc.).The ideas and methods outlined by Dr. Mclean have proved EXTREMELY effective in retraining my mare.Desperation drove me to read Dr. Mcleans work, as my horse was rearing and bolting, and I was ready to sell her. Today (8 months later), by following the principles of training, and using techniques such as overshadowing, etc., I have a completely different horse: calm, happy, and a total joy to work with. I simply couldn't have done it without the knowledge of how horses truly learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars well researched, not for everyone
I can't say I agree (or necessarily disagree) with everything in this book, but it gave me a lot to think about.McLean certainly knows his horses. This is not a book for those who like to anthropomorphize or romanticize horses. It's very realistic pictures of horses as horses.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disapointing
Nothing new here. I was disappointed to say the least after shelling out my bucks for this book I just expected more. Certainly nothing to write home about.

Try this book instead: Equine Behaviour: Principles and Practice

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine book that lays out an overview of McLeans training
For those of us familiar with behavioural training this book has been a long time in coming. So many times you are stuck between the traditional 'leg on, leg on, leg on' (where's the release??) training school or NH which has it's own achilles heal - continually activating the natural flight response and for most practitioners a total lack of understand of what positive reinforcement is.

For those looking for a more extensive explaination of the actual training methods he has written a second book "Horse Training The McLean Way
" however this one is meant to provide an introduction into behavioural training and then an overview of the types of exercises and horse 'problems' that they deal with. The book is well written and should be easily accessible to anyone interested even if they are not science-minded or well versed in behavioural psychology.

For all the dressage riders with horses that buck instead at tempi-changes or rear instead of piaffe - reading this could make you understand that these are your problems not the horse! and save your dressage mount (and your competition career)

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has no equal
I have been a rider/trainer and instructor for the past 30 years.I have ridden with and trained with some of the top trainers in the world.I have read hundreds of books on the training of horses and been to dozens upon dozens of clinics with all of the "horse whisperers".After reading Andrew McLean's incredible book, I immediately went out and bought 10 copies to give to friends and trainers.I will agree with one of the reviewers that the book might be better appreciated by someone with a background in psychology and that Andrew does presume a certain knowledge level from the reader.Apart from that it is one of the most amazing books on training that I have ever come across.I began using many of Andrew's principles on our new green pony as soon as I finished the book and was simply floored by the simplicity and efficacy of the methods.I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Many horse lovers are looking for ways to make their facilities more environmentally friendly and to practice greener riding habits. Green methods are cost-efficient, they help preserve beautiful farms and pastures for future generations, and they provide healthier surroundings for both people and horses. The first book of its kind, The Green Guide for Horse Owners and Riders takes a clear look at current horse-care practices and provides green alternatives for day-to-day horsekeeping - both for the property owner who keeps dozens of horses and for the rider who rents a stall in someone else's barn.

Property owners will find extensive information on building and renovating barns that use environmentally friendly materials, fit well into surrounding ecosystems, and work best with available water resources and prevailing weather conditions. All horsekeepers will appreciate the chapters that address the constant challenges of responsible pasture rotation and manure management.

There is plenty here for the concerned rider, too. From avoiding toxins in feed, fly sprays, cleaning products, and medicines to practicing good trail-riding etiquette, anyone who spends time with horses will find simple and rewarding ways to be kinder to the earth.

Author Heather Cook gives readers countless ideas for lowering the impact horses and horsekeeping facilities have on the surrounding environment. Sell composted horse manure (recycle and reuse!); replace old incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents; use empty grain bags as garbage bags. Product Description

Feeding horses wasn't supposed to be so complicated. At least that's not what Mother Nature intended. All horses in the wild really needed was a good source of grass and water and a natural salt lick of some kind. But as man began using horses for specific purposes, such as working fields, riding for pleasure or performance, or for breeding, so too did the kinds and amount of feeds owners gave to their animals. In Understanding Equine Nutrition, Karen Briggs, a horsewoman and equine nutritionist, sets out to make feeding horses simple again. Whether your horse is a growing yearling, a high-performance athlete, a mom-to-be, or a favorite pasture horse, this important guide will help you make sense of the jargon, sort out the ingredients, and make a feeding plan and menu that is best for your horse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I have to say this book was pretty easy to read.It does help you understand equine nutrition. How the horses' digestive system works and why horses need proper nutrition.Even a good discussion on the different types of hay.I bought the book to refresh my memory because I got myself a horse again after more than 20 years and the book helped me a great deal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning nutrition book
This is a good beginning horse Nutrition book. It doesn't go into a lot of detail but will at least explain the building blocks of horse feed and help the reader understand what needs your horse has on the nutrition level. It is easy to read and is a good starter book.

1-0 out of 5 stars A guide on how to do more harm than good.
Seems like anyone who has fed a horse is an equine nutritionist these days. This book was revised in 2007, but I think the only thing that changed was the cover.I didn't readthis book in its entirety, but just skimming it was enough to know it includes some real backwards information. She recommends feeding sweet feed!(We should all be working to eradicate sugars from our horses' diets.)And she describes corn as a nutritious grain!(FOR COWS!)Yes, there is some usable information in this book, but there are much better books on equine nutrition out there.Do your research. One highly recommended book is HORSE JOURNAL Guide to Supplements and Nutraceuticals, by Eleanor M. Kellon, V.M.D. ... Read more
