Only Useful as an Overview
This map will only be useful to you if you don't have any other basic resources, like a general world atlas or travel guides, at home.
The main map itself shows the entire South Pacific region, with country boundaries clearly marked, but individual islands reduced to the size of dots.
Major islands are shown on inset maps, however even these are still tiny - you will find bigger, more detailed, and more accurate maps of the same islands (and many more) in travel guidebooks to this region by Lonely Planet or Moon.
In short, unless you just want a general map to hang on your wall, don't waste your money on this one!

amazing map
I've been looking for a map for a long time of Oceania because after college I'm settling on an island by myself in search for waves. I could'nt believe all the islands I've never known about. If I was to purchase one map in conjunction with nautical charts, it would be this one.

Not the greatest
With apologies to the author -- I've been to Kauai many times, and this is the one map I would not have taken into my car. It's accurate, but it's so small, it's not useful.Maybe I'm not good at translating map scales as printed in the product description, but I was sadly disappointed. I got around better using the "free" maps.

What I would suggest....rerelease this map as a laminated card.It's the right size for that.It wouldn't be a bad move with all of the rain they get.

Good Overview Map
This map, like the series of maps for the Hawaiian Islands, provides a good introduction to the island it covers (Kauai).Topography, main roads, towns and geographic features.As long as you want a general map that isn't too detailed, and doesn't provide detailed street names, this is a good intro map to Kauai.

Nice small map
The map is good for carrying around while driving since its small and compact. It shows the main roads but does not show mile markers which would be quite helpful on the island.

Good starter map
I bought this map on Amazon and it was a good basic starter map for our 10 day trip to Kauai. Ironically, it was the only map we saw available when we first arrived and in many cases what I paid on Amazon was much cheaper then the price for the same thing on Kauai itself! However, if you really want to travel around Kauai and are going to be looking for specific streets, you need something much more detailed then this map has to offer. ... Read more

HORRIBLE MAP!
This map is pathetic.I bought it because I have a Rand McNally map that is OUTSTANDING... well, this one is anything but.The whole island views show absolutely NO detail.Only certain areas on each island are blown up into detail, leaving the rest of the island a complete mystery!Also, about 70% of the back of this map is the street-location grid listing.They could've used that space to show more detailed MAPS of the islands.I could not hate this map more.It's useless.The only reason I don't return it is because it's not worth the cost of shipping it back! ... Good Map with Room for Improvement
On one side, this map has very detailed information regarding the areas surrounding Honolulu and Waikiki that is very useful. On the opposite side it contains a map of the whole island that shows all the major roads and highways. We were able to use it to drive around the coast without having to make too many guesses as to where to turn at local roads (which are not listed). It would have been nice if there was an inset for other parts of the island with more detail. Also the map has a cardstock cover which makes it easy to fold but is too large to fit in most purses.

Good map of Oahu and major cities
Shows the major routes around Oahu and has detailed inset maps of Honolulu, Kaneohe, and Lai'ie. The map of Honolulu in particular is very detailed. The print is real small though, so you need a magnifying glass (or really good eyesight) to read it.

Hawaii Oahu Map
I always buy a map of where ever I am vacationing before I plan to leave. It helps to plan the vacation better!This was a very good map for my trip, and it was easy to fold and unfold in the car if I wanted to find certian places or go somewhere I wasnt planning.Yes a GPS is a great thing, but having a map to lay on the table the morning you are driving around, to look over with your coffee, well that makes a trip more fun.

Nelles Maps
Thank goodness I finally found this Nelles Map a month before my trip to Oahu!It honestly was the only thorough map I found for this island in 8 months of searching both Hawaii visitor sites and book companies.This map gave great detail and was not so miniscule that I had to squint to read it.The only drawback (I felt) was the too large hard cover.The firmness of the cover was fine-it was just too large to squeeze into compact luggage pieces or vehicle cubbies.(This was my lone reason for withholding a star.)

side note-I had located the Kauai and Big Island sister maps months before and used all 3 maps daily on our trip.The only map I found to offer better detailing of downtown areas was the Hawaiian airlines map-and they only offered ones for Kauai and the Big Island.All that said, my Nelles maps are the ones I have kept for return trips to Hawaii.

This map came quickly in good condition.We will use it on our visit to Molokai in Oct 2009.

Dreamin' of Moloka'i
I purchased this map so that I could locate the rental property I was considering.It was tremendously helpful.I am able to find landmarks and make informed vacation plans.A wise purchase!I would recommend this to anyone considering a vacation to this "less travelled" island.

Okay For a Freebie
I certainly wouldn't pay money for this book.
It had a small amount of good info, but in the end I felt it wasn't worth suffering through the rest to find.

I agree with the other reviewers who were disappointed in the lack of snorkeling info and maps.

I skimmed most of the book and was sick of SB at the end.

It's worth the money
I've used the book several times and lent it out several times. Once it was lost and bought again.

It's a great guide for the fist, second or third timer in Hawaiier.It'll save you time and money on the Islands and it'll give you some understanding and appreciation of them, too.

For me and those I dragged to Hawaii with me, the most important part of the book were all of the great tips on good places to spend a good amount of time with your face under water looking at the fish and all of the people looking at the fish.

It probably shouldn't have been my only guide book, but it was. I'm gonna go ahead and spend the $18 on the newer edition and see how that works out.

Transplanted"Local" Shares His Views
We just rec'd this tour guide in anticipation of our trip and its a bit of a downer. According to Snorkel Bob: tourism is pressuring the reefs and they are "browning out". There is toxic runoff from the pineapple fields in the water after it rains. The large resorts are to be avoided.
The book does have a guide to snorkel sites on each island that is very helpful. There are also restaurant, boat tour, luau and other recommendations in the book. But they are a fraction of what you'll find in other guides and all of the businesses that are listed on Snorkel Bobs reservation service on his web site are recommended. I would take this section with a grain of salt as I think it is stealth advertising.
What is really telling is the 'Separate Reality' section of the lodging recommendations. The author takes on the large resorts, especially the Grand Wailea and Waikoloa as being "too perfect". More words are devoted to criticizing these two resorts than are devoted to recommending any others. The criticism does not seem objective and lacks a substance.The author does not mention spending the night at either and fails to describe his complaints. He jumps on the Waikoloa for having a fake stuffed Marlin on the wall and describes a exchange with a young hostess where he and a buddy challenge her assertion that it was real to the point of bringing her to tears - even if this is a joke, its not funny. Snorkel Bob also recounts taking a verbal shot at a "gondola" captain for driving a gondola on a cable in a concrete river in a resort.It was after I read this section - with great interest as we are staying at one of the resorts, that I realized Snorkel Bob has a disgruntled locals point of view.

My family is looking forward to our trip and this book brought us down for staying at a "too perfect" resort and pressuring the fish on the reefs.

This shouldn't be your only guide book
It should be the guide book you keep on the side, for fun, like a mistress.Sort of like the I Ching of guide books, I found myself opening the book at random for hilarious bits of insight.

If you need to find something specific this guide book probably won't help you, but it will entertain you.After a long morning of snorkelling (what else?) my husband and I wanted to find a nearby restaurant for lunch.We'd left our other guide book in our room, so we earnestly consulted Snorkel Bob.We read reviews of several lackluster restaurants until we got to a restaurant Snorkel Bob raved about.Because of the food or the ambience?No, because this was the place where Snorkel Bob got tired of reviewing restaurants so he got drunk.Did this help us figure out where to eat lunch?No.But it put us in such a carefree frame of mind that we decided to just drive until we found pizza, which turned out to be exactly the right thing for us to do.

The Newer Edition is Even Better
This edition is dated 1997. If you are reading this review, then you will be far better served by the '02 edition. amazon doesn't have it, but snorkelbob dot com does. It's updated with a reference index and many excellent maps. I, Snorkel Bob, cannot get penetration with the phantom amazon, so here's hoping you can get this right. Hail Atlantis! & Hana Hou! ...
