This entertaining and sensitive book deepens our knowledge by tracing the paths of those Western Hare Krishnas who eventually travelled to or lived in India. Have the Western Hare Krishnas really become part of Indian culture? Can it be that Indians accept these foreigners as essentially Hindu and even Brahman? Brooks answers in a way that radically challenges our accepted images of Indian social dynamics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More Than A Potboiler
This book is an overview of the Hare Krishna movement, written by an outsider in 1973. Faye Levine, a nondevotee, lived at the New York ISKCON Temple, interviewing devotees and participating in their activities.

It is written from a sympathetic and intelligent viewpoint, one willing to be open-minded but not naive. It addresses both the positive aspects(sankirtan and other aspects of bhakti) and the negative ones(the extreme asceticism and uncritical worship of Swami Prabhupada) of this new religious phenomenon.

It simultaneously clears the air about the alleged nefarious activities that nondevotees feared at the time and also raises an eyebrow at the limitations of thought that she perceived. Yet, in the end, the balances tip towards the positive, although not without personal reservations.

This book is balanced and well worth reading. If one is looking for a good introduction to the ISKCON Movement, this book is an excellent place to start. ... Read more

Excerpt:The Aum namah iv ya mantra written in Devanagari Aum Nama iv ya (IAST transliteration, refer to Sanskrit for pronunciation, Devanagari : , Kannada : , Malayalam : , Tamil : , Telugu : , Bengali : , Gujarati : , Punjabi : ) is among the foremost mantras . Its general translation is "adoration (namas ) to iva ", preceded by the mystical syllable Aum . It is called Panchakshara , or " having five syllables ". aivite mystics hold that within its celestial tones and hues resides all of the intuitive knowledge of aivism . The Aum namah iv ya mantra appears for the first time, still without the Aum , in a traditional Vedic prayer to Rudra called ri Rudram (Rudra is considered an earlier aspect and name of Lord iva). In this context, iva retains its original meaning as an adjective meaning "auspicious, benign, friendly", a euphemistic epithet of Rudra. A Hindu aivite view The meaning of the Nama iv ya mantra was explained by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami : Nama iv ya is the most holy name of God iva, recorded at the very center of the Vedas and elaborated in the aiva Agamas. Na is the Lord's concealing grace, Ma is the world, i stands for iva, Va is His revealing grace, Ya is the soul. The five elements, too, are embodied in this ancient formula for invocation. Na is earth, Ma is water, i is fire, V is air, and Ya is ether, or k a . Many are its meanings. Nama ivaya has such power, the mere intonation of these syllables reaps its own reward in salvaging the soul from bondage of the treacherous instinctive mind a... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An inside look at Hare Krishna movement
I enjoy looking at other religions, including the Hare Krishnas as I take a class of students every year to the local temple to find out more about their beliefs and philosophy. Nori Muster was involved in the public relations part of the ISKCON and details a number of stories of corruption that took place in the leadership after the founder died. There were a number of moving places where the reader was able to experience the frustration that Nori must have felt. She was dedicated to her faith, regardless of how her leaders let her down. The book moves well and was a story that was well worth telling. The only frustration I had is that Nori did not let the reader into her personal life, especially her marriage with her husband (whom she is no longer married to). What was it like being married in this group? Did she abide by the teachings when it came to marriage (sex only for procreation)? What was it that caused the two of them to eventually split? And what does she hold today as truth? These were just a few issues that really could have used more explanation. Otherwise, this is an excellent book (I have the paperback edition, and I don't see that available for purchase) that ought to be considered by religion watchers everywhere. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Dipak Narshibhai Patel (born 25 October 1958 in Nairobi, Kenya) played 37 Tests and 75 One Day Internationals for the New Zealand cricket team. A stylish middle order batsman and a right-arm off-break bowler, Patel started playing for Worcestershire in 1976, having moved to England in 1968. He continued to play for them until 1986, playing 236 first-class matches, scoring 9734 runs at 29.23, and taking 357 wickets at 36.66. Patel emigrated to New Zealand in 1986, although he had spent the last six winters in New Zealand, and this enabled him to qualify to play international cricket for New Zealand straight away. In the 1985/86 season, his first playing for Auckland, he scored 174 on debut, the highest ever debut score for the province. In his first two seasons in New Zealand, he scored 1234 runs at 38.56 and took 42 wickets at 26.69, so it was no surprise that he was called up to the Test team. Patel made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1987; he scored 18 and 20, both times being dismissed by Courtney Walsh, and bowled 3 overs. He made his ODI debut in the series that followed. His highest score in Tests came when he was run out for 99 against England in 1992. His best bowling figures of 6 for 50 also came in 1992 against Zimbabwe. In the 1992 World Cup, he was used as an opening bowler, initially against Australia, in an attempt to counteract the tactic of hitting over the in-field during the first 15 overs. This strategy paid off, and he was often used in the same role in other matches. Since retiring in 1997, he has coached at a provincial (first-class) level in New Zealand, notab...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3083608 ... Read more

Excerpt: Ranchor Prime, also known as Ranchor Dasa (born 1950, Leeds) is a British author, researcher on Hindu environmental issues, and a Hindu religious scholar. Ranchor Prime is best known for his books on Hinduism and ecology. He's a disciple of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Ranchor Prime has translated the Bhagavad Gita into English. It was published with illustrations by B. G. Sharma as The Illustrated Bhagavad Gita: A New Translation With Commentary. Ranchor Prime is an advisor on religion and conservation to the Alliance of Religions and Conservation, and he is co-founder and director of Friends of Vrindavan, an environmental charity active in Britain and India. He is also a member of the International Consultancy on Religion, Education and Culture (ICOREC). Ranchor was born as Richard Prime in 1950 in Leeds. He was brought up within the Roman-Catholic tradition. From a very early age he was "saturated with Catholic devotion". He lived in a cathedral, lived with Benedictine monks and was a choirboy. In the end of the 1960s, while studying at Chelsea College of Art and Design, he "very quickly lost faith in the materialistic sort of life". He started to look for something deep and spiritual and along with his friends experiment with LSD and other drugs. At the same time, he became interested in the "mystic East", which provided "a tremendous spiritual tradition but one that was different to the West". In 1970 he joined ISKCON, popularly known as the Hare Krishna movement. Richard came in contact with Hare Krishna mantra through the musical Hair, that had just arrived in London at...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3287501 ... Read more
