Product Description

During medical training there are certain parts of day-to-day tasks that are not taught at medical school nor in the traditional reference books. There are some skills that medical students are expected to learn by ‘osmosis’ while on placement and under the guidance of junior doctors. These skills are never officially taught or examined in medical school. They are, however, a fundamental part of being a safe, good and efficient doctor. This book includes ‘golden rules’ or important points to remember and case examples, both of which are given as displayed extracts.

This book is designed to help the junior doctor unlock their potential and improve their performance, cutting the time it takes to achieve certain medical objectives. It is meant to fill in the gaps where the medical school and clinical guides stop. It gives the reader the information needed to organise themselves so that they can hit the ground running. It is not intended as a clinical survival guide, but more a friendly hand to allow the reader to get ahead in medicine and how to keep on track and develop a career path.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fair priced book... Good reference point..
Neeed this book as a reference point to help out with older networks.. Good info..

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to pass the exam 70-81
Without any earlier experience with Exchange Server or any earlier exchange exams, I used this book to study for the exam and passed it. Maybe not the best study guide available for the test but gives you enoughinformation to pass the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Confusing, repetative and badly laid out
I did not go beyond the first two chapters, mainly because of the 'paradoxical' answers to some of the questions, which I couldn't make heads or tails of, nor did a couple of the Exchange administrators here at work. The rest of the book may have been different, but I believed I was wastingmy time reading any further.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
I found the layout of the book difficult to follow. The "Test Day Fast Facts" were a handy summary, but the sample questions were poorly worded, confusing, and in way to many cases, totally inaccurate.

3-0 out of 5 stars Exam Cram or not?
This book can't decide if it's a pure exam cram book or if it wants toteach you about Exchange proper. It does focus on the exam well and got methrough the 5.5 exam (but I'd already done the 4 exam and have been workingwith Exchange for about 2 years).I think any newcomers to exchange wouldfind this a messy book - I didn't like it's style. However, there's not alot of choice for a 5.5 exam cram at the moment, so I suppose it's best ofa bad bunch. ... Product Description

Those Who Can, Teach is a current, dynamic, reader-friendly text that helps students make informed decisions about entering teacher education programs. The authors of this best-selling book use multiple sources, including biography and unique author dialogues, to increase student interest and involvement with the material. The authors' direct, conversational voice invites students to reflect on the problems and satisfactions of teaching in the United States, so students can regard becoming a teacher a positive challenge.

This text is organized around four themes—"Schools and Students," "Teachers," "Foundations and the Future," and "The Teaching Profession"—and a series of questions that are key to the central issues and concerns of teaching and learning. The Tenth Edition features increased emphasis on reflection and reflective teaching and a continued emphasis on diversity, with added statistics on minority groups, including Asian/Pacific Islanders and Native Americans.

  • New! The "Open to Debate" feature explores controversial education matters. In this feature, the two authors express opposing views on issues about which they truly disagree, providing readers with a balanced perspective instead of an established theoretical agenda.
  • New! The "Voices from the Classroom" feature provides interviews with real teachers, administrators, and other school personnel who give tips and advice to new teachers on key topics.
  • New! "Pause and Reflect Questions" appear 3–4 times in each chapter to encourage students to stop and consider an idea and its relevance to their own experiences.
  • New! Increased coverage of standards-based education throughout the text includes a new correlating table that connects textbook content to INTASC (Interstate New Teacher Assessment & Support Consortium) teacher standards.
  • New! A new student CD-ROM includes video resources, graphic resources, and primary text resources, all followed by reflection questions.
  • An expanded companion web site includes ACE self-quizzes, links, additional "Voices from the Classroom" features, enhancements of "Biography," "Open to Debate," and "Policy Matters!" features with links to updated information and additional reflection questions. The site also includes a classroom observation guide and tips for creating a teaching portfolio.

Book Excerpts:

The art of teaching is based primarily upon the science of psychology. In this book the authors have sought to make clear the principles of psychology which are involved in teaching, and to show definitely their application in the work of the classroom. The book has been written in language as free from technical terms as is possible.

In a discussion of the methods of teaching it is necessary to consider the ends or aims involved, as well as the process. The authors have, on this account, included a chapter on the work of the teacher, in which is discussed the aims of education.

The success or failure of the work of a teacher is determined by the changes which are brought to pass in the children who are being taught. This book, therefore, includes a chapter on the measurement of the achievements of children.

Throughout the book the discussion of the art of teaching is always modified by an acceptance upon the part of the writers of the social purpose of education.

The treatment of each topic will be found to be based upon investigations and researches in the fields of psychology and education which involve the measurement of the achievements of children and of adults under varying conditions.

Wherever possible, the relation between the principle of teaching laid down and the scientific inquiry upon which it is based is indicated.

Any careful study of the mental life and development of children reveals at the same time the unity and the diversity of the process involved.

For the sake of definiteness and clearness, the authors have differentiated between types of mental activity and the corresponding types of classroom exercises.

They have, at the same time, sought to make clear the interdependence of the various aspects of teaching method and the unity involved in mental development. ... Read more

Product Description

Touch the Future...Teach! has been called “the most reflective book on the market” by reviewers. One that “makes prospective teachers really think about the profession and their impact on it.”Written with the express purpose of developing a meaningful understanding of the critical role teachers play in the development of young people, Diaz, Pelletier and Provenzo use six themes as the foundation of their writing:professionalism, values and assumptions, multiculturalism and diversity, standards, linking theory to practice, and ethics and social justice. Through the use of a carefully designed pedagogical plan, the authors involve readers in the considerations and decision-making teachers undergo on a day-to-day basis and stimulate prospective teachers to consider their own future and begin to develop their own professional plan. The result is a book that shares an honest overview of teachers and their work, and inspires prospective teachers to remember that if children represent the future of the world then teachers do indeed touch the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Touch the Futrue
I liked that the book came so fast after I ordered it.Once I got it for class, it was very easy to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love Education
Even though I'm not pursuing teaching anymore, I still recommend this book if you are planning on becoming a teacher or thinking about becoming a teacher. I love the way the book is set up. It gets to the point. There are probably 2 chapters worth skipping, but this book is very insightful. It takes you into the world of education. I think parents (or anyone else interesting in the world of education) might be interested in reading this book, too, that way they know how much hard work it takes to be a great teacher. Being a teacher is not an easy job, and I think some great teachers are under-appreciated. Great teachers make teaching look EASY, but it takes much more than passion and dedication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Thought Provoking!
When I saw the other reviews listed for this book on Amazon, I was dreading that I needed to buy the book for one of my education classes.I am now over halfway through the book, and I must say that I really like this book!

The first chapter or two did rehash what I had learned in other classes, but beyond that, the book gives very valuable lessons about accommodating the diversity found in today's classrooms. The book is very easy to read and it provides helpful website links and book references for further reading.

My fellow classmates have also been enjoying this textbook. We discuss each chapter in class after reading it and we always have provocative discussions on topics such as: equity in the schools, racial integration, and how to improve teacher salaries.

1-0 out of 5 stars Necessity
I needed this book for class. Otherwise it is a waste of money if you don't want to go into teaching.

Product Description
Business, Social Sciences/History, and Education are the most popular college majors today, but not every student has the interest or aptitude to be successful in these fields. Additionally, many of these fields are glutted with graduates who are forced to take lower-paying jobs or positions that are unrelated to their field of study. They Teach That in College!? provides information about interesting, lucrative, and cutting-edge college majors unknown to many counselors, educators, and parents. It includes profiles of more than 95 college majors, course listings, potential employers, contact information for colleges and universities that offer these programs, contact information for professional associations that offer career information about these fields, interesting sidebars, photographs, and interviews with college educators. They Teach That in College!? has 96 main chapters which focus on unique and interesting majors. What is a unique major? We used two official criterion to select majors to include in this book: 1) the major had to be fast-growing and offer good employment and salary prospects for students, and 2) the major had to be offered at less than 25 percent of colleges and universities in the United States. A third unofficial criterion was that the major had to capture our imagination in short it had to be fun and, hopefully, interesting to our readers. In addition to the aforementioned sections, They Teach That in College!? also features a school index, a schools by state index, and an association/organization index. What's New in the Second Edition? We have made many improvements and additions to the second edition of They Teach That in College!? We have: Increased the number of majors covered from 68 in the last edition to 96 in the second edition; Added nearly 40 new majors to the book, including Nanoscience/Nanotechnology, Sustainable Agriculture, Mechatronics Systems Engineering, Horticultural Therapy, Forensic Accounting, Satellite Communications, Ecotourism, and Comic Book Art, to name just a few; Added many new interviews with educators, as well as new sidebars; Thoroughly updated the articles, including contact information for colleges and universities and professional associations; and added photographs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
When I decided to quit my job and go travel the world, a friend suggested I buy this book. I did just that and after I got my EFL teaching certificate (with a school listed in this book) I landed a job in Taiwan using the contacts in the "CELT Guide". Many of my colleagues found their jobs using this book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to have the adventure of a lifetime -- and get paid for it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource for wannabe ESL teachers
Okay, there are some good books on the market for people who want to travel the world and teach English as a second language. Susan Griffiths' book has some great anecdotes but it's for Brits. Jeff Mohamed's book has some good points but there's not enough contact information. Nope, my advice is to save your $$$ and buy this book. "CELT" is the most comprehensive title in this area. There's detailed information on teaching in more than 130 countries around the world and the lists of employers are endless. Even more, there's a great section on coming back to the States and finding a job here. This book is well worth the extra wait in ordering it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but not great
I read the book and thought it was generally okay but not really great. It seems like a combination of the British 'ELT Guide' and Susan Griffith's 'Teaching English Abroad.' So it has a lot of information about visas and other legal issue and a lot of anecdotes. These might help new teachers to decide which countries to consider teaching in.
Where the guide falls down is in not giving enough specific advice on how to find and secure jobs. For practical advice on job searching and on things like how to choose a training course, I think Jeff Mohamed's 'Teaching English Overseas' wins hands down.
But the CELT guide is definitely worth looking at.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant contribution
I have to say that the CELT guide has been the answer to my prayers. I have been wanting to teach English overseas for so long but did not have the information to aid my job search... until this guide came along. I intend to go to Thailand and thanks to the CELT guide I have been able to contact the schools there, and I now understand the visa hurdles I have to jump over. I believe that the CELT guide has been put together really well, is concise, and acts as a great point of departure for all of us wanting to teach away from home. Great job Mr Ward! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing read, practical and priceless advice
There are so many books on job interviews it is hard not to get confused. I bought a few at my local bookshop and liked this one best. What attracted me to it was fact that it was written by a migrant (just like myself, I'm originally from UK but living in Australia now). I like the author's quirky but no-nonsense style.

For the amount of information and advice it contains, this is an absolute bargain! There are 300 or so questions discused and each one has a model answer suggested, of course, to be modified by your own situation, experience and communication style.

I particlarly liked the author's stories from his own interviewing experience, written in a tounge-in-cheek style, but very valuable and entertaining. This is not some theoretical discourse but a practical manual. The last section, giving specific advice to women, migrants, school-leavers, job-hoppers and similar categories of job-hunters is worth the price of the book alone!

Product Description

In Teachers as Cultural Workers, Freire speaks directly to teachers about the lessons learned from a lifetime of experience as an educator and social theorist. Freire’s words challenge all who teach to reflect critically on the meaning of the act of teaching as well as the meaning of learning. He shows why a teacher’s success depends on a permanent commitment to learning and training, as part of an ongoing appraisal of classroom practice. By opening themselves to recognition of the different roads students take in order to learn, teachers will become involved in a continual reconstruction of their own paths of curiosity, opening the doors to habits of learning that will benefit everyone in the classroom. In essays new to this edition, well-known and respected educators Peter McLaren, Joe Kincheloe, and Shirley Steinberg add their reflections on the relevance of Freire’s work to the study and practice of education across the globe.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teacher Professionalism
This book was recommended reading for the professional leadership team of a summer program for highly able, but economically disadvantaged youth. For those of us working in the field of education for several years, it is a wonderful reminder of why we chose this profession.
It is worthwhile reading -- especially for those who are getting 'tired'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
The book was in perfect condition.I dropped the class and had to return it.No problem from the vendor.l

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Rambling
The presence of the word "letters" in the title should perhaps have warned me what to expect, but as my first exposure to Freire's writing it fell far short of his reputation. I did learn something from the 95 pages of this book, but I could have learned as much in ten were it not for the rambling and repetition throughout. I suspect that starting with Freire's classic Pedagogy of the Oppressed would have been a better use of my time.

Another "problem" with this book is that Freire's critique is specific to the context of his work in Brazil: not just the words but the lessons themselves may require translation. For those who are more interested in a radical critique of education in the US, I'd recommend Schooling in Capitalist America: Educational Reform and the Contradictions of Economic Life as a better starting point.

2-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading ~ You're killing me
I get it.Freire's an academic and if it's too easy to read then no one will take him seriously.

Seriously dude, You're killing me.Some of the most important nuggets were lost on me because of all the $50 words used rather than straightforward speak.

That being said there is some value in this work, particularly if you will be teaching any ELL's or children coming from any socialist country. It's good to know what the expectations will be of the new learners and their families. ... Read more
