Product Description
The complete guide to the history, design, and construction of golf greens

An internationally recognized authority on golf course environmental issues, Dr. Michael Hurdzan has compiled more than forty-five years of observations, experiences, training, testing, and learning to present this groundbreaking book--Golf Greens: History, Design, and Construction.

Through a unique exploration of the history of golf greens, related design theories, and future trends in the game, Golf Greens uncovers how modern designs of golf greens fit in with the complete history of the game. It looks at the strengths and weaknesses of construction methods, legal considerations, how to manage specific problems, and much more.

With photographs of old and new greens, greens under construction, and newly finished greens, Golf Greens covers:

  • The design and construction of pushup, California, and USGA-recommended greens
  • Guidelines for determining best construction methods, with special emphasis on site-specific concerns
  • Turfgrass selection, with detailed information on artificial turf
  • How to use design to make greens fast or slow to match player and course expectations, as well as provide a foundation for agronomically sound maintenance practices
  • Cultural and physiological stresses, rapid grow-in procedures, biotic problems, and physical soil test results

Golf Greens: History, Design, and Construction is a valuable resource for golf course architects, golf course superintendents, irrigation specialists, turfgrass specialists, golf course owners and builders, real estate/golf course developers, and landscape architects. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No other book needed on the history of golf green construction
There is no other book out on the market that explains scientifically and in layman's terms about the ins and outs of golf green history and construction than this book by Golf Course Architect M.Hurdzan.I would recommend to all those in the industry to use this book as their bible for their guide to constructing a golf green. As a fellow architect Hurdzan is a competitor in the industry but I have no qualms recommending this book to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fellow golf course architect makes comments.
Mike Hurdzan's Golf Greens is not an easy read straight through from cover to cover because it is highly technical. But I did it and I'm glad.It searches the subject in far greater depth of detail and pictorially than anyone has ever done before. Great coverage! And it doesn't always simply "sell the conventional line". I learned lots from it, though before thought I was already pretty well experienced in this important matter.I recommend this book to all golf course developers, contractors, maintenance superintendents and other golf course architects for learning much more about golf greens. ... Product Description
First played in 1860, the British Open is truly the world championship of golf and the most complete test of a player's game. This fully illustrated book covers all the great players and moments in its history, from the Great Triumvirate of Vardon, Taylor, and Braid to recent championships dominated by Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo, and others. With full results for the last 100 years, histories and maps of all the rota courses, and a complete records section, The British Open is a comprehensive volume for any golf fan's library.Amazon.com Review
Many championships qualify as opens, but when the word "Open" stands alone following the definite article, it refers to only one tournament. The oldest and most prestigious of golf's great championships, the British Open first teed off at Prestwick in 1860, and no golfer's résumé is fully complete until his name has been inscribed on the Claret Jug claimed by the victor.

The British Open chronicles the tournament's history as neatly as a caddie organizes his player's bag. Fully illustrated with contemporary and archival photos, it begins at the beginning, establishing 10 overall eras of play--such as "The Early Years 1860-1900," "The Golden Years 1920-1933," and "The Era of Nicklaus, Player, and Trevino 1963-1974"--and within them, devotes a chapter to each tournament. The approach makes for breezy coverage, letting each annual gathering stand on its own and, at the same time, fit into a larger whole. It allows us to put the Open in perspective, to see patterns and stories as they develop--the early dominance of the Morrises; the transition to a more modern game through Harry Vardon and James Braid; the arrival and ascendance of Bobby Jones; the brilliance of Bobby Locke, Peter Thomson, Tom Watson, Seve Ballesteros; the frustrations of Greg Norman.

The Open's last 30 pages are a golfer's dream: facts, figures, results, milestones, records, and, most fun of all, complete layouts of all 14 courses to host the tournament. It raises The Open from a spirited history into a necessary reference--a fine golfing companion for watching the Open, or just for thinking about it the other 51 weeks of the year. --Jeff Silverman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great coffee table book for the golfing man in your life!
This book has it all for the golfer who follows the game. It is written to provide information about British Open winners over the course of history. It is easy to read and is a great coffee table book with outstanding golf photos.P.A.B.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of each Open since 1900
This engaging book gives the history of the British Open since it was first played in 1860 with complete coverage of each event since 1900. Most of the individually covered Open championships receive two pages, including good textual reporting of the event as well as photographs. The coverage is divided into historical periods such as the age of Bobby Locke and Peter Thompsion in the 50s and 60s when the two won eight Opens between them. This book is so up to date that Tiger Woods' monumental victory in 2000 receives full coverage. The great Open champions as well as the obscure Cinderella stories all receive lavish treatment. Additionally, the book has other great features such as a description and illustration of each of the Open courses, including venues that have not been used in decades. So, if you want to relive Arnold Palmer's emotional fairwell or the great duel between Nicklaus and Watson in which Watson prevailed after a gut wretching effort, this is the book for you. Additionally, this is the type of book that makes a great gift for the golf lover on your gift list. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very delightful and interesting
I saw it at a friend's house and also had a hard time finding it. Thank you Amazon.com. Well worth reading and enjoying. Good book for the golfer and their library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone interested in women in golf
I don't understand why this book is so hard to find.I read about it somewhere and tried several major bookstores and they didn't even have it in their computer.I was starting to think there was something wrong with it.Instead I found it at Amazon and found it to be a really good book.It covered so many different aspects of golf and the players and really told all sides of a number of issures. It seemed fair and unbiased and the author was willing to state what she objectively observed and that which she just felt.I would like to know how the players feel about it and whether they think it was accurate - or did any of them read it?

5-0 out of 5 stars A First-Rate Book
The author of this book spent more than 15 years compiling this book, doing interviews with players who were successful and not so successful on the LPGA from the 1940's through the 1990's.I've followed women's pro golf since the mid-seventies and have been curious about those women's lives. If you're a hardcore fan of the LPGA, you have to buy this book.If you are interested in the life of the career woman athlete, you should read this book. Some of the women are very articulate and honest about their lives and what it cost them to pursue a life in women's professional golf ... When it appeared in 1955, this book was one of the first histories of golf to relate golfing developments to their historical context. Browning was aided in his research by his position as editor of "Golfing" magazine from 1910 to 1955. Drawing on original sources, the book contains information about the evolution of golf courses, equipment, terms and rules; participants in the game, including caddies, amateur players, professionals and course architects; the history of women's golf; and the growth of the sport around the world.
