VERY VERY fast shipping! got it in like 3 days! great buyer, book was used as stated, but not too beat up, only the cover was a little curved. pages itself were pristine

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear & Concise Textbook
This is a great textbook for a student or just for someone wanting to learn more about the world around them. It could also serve as a world atlas but with more detail. There is a great balance between maps, photos, and text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Reading and Good Maps
I bought this book for a college class, but I actually don't mind reading it.It is pretty easy to understand (a HS kid or even motivated junior high kid could understand it with no problem) and not too dry (written in a clear and engaging style). It contains a lot of interesting information and some great maps. This would be a great book for your kid if you're home schooling him/her.Also, adults will probably like it too; it really gives you a rough feel for the world around you without overwhemling you with too many obscure facts. If you're some well traveled worldly type, it will probably be stuff you already know, but if you're a typical simple person like myself, it is a great book and you'll learn a lot from it.

Product Description
This book should be in the library of every transportation researcher. Ronald Sheck Intermodal and guideway research program director, Center for Urban Transportation Research, University of Florida There is no escape from transport. By sea, air, road or rail, we rely on transport to connect individuals, businesses and cities. At a time when deregulation and privatization are becoming global trends and concerns grow about sustainability, what is the future of transport for the 21st Century? The best-selling first edition of Moderñ Transport Geography provided a topical transport textbook, based on geographical theory and focused on contemporary issues. This new, expanded, updated and revised edition builds on the strengths of the earlier text by taking a more international and global perspective. The book brings together an unparalleled range of contributors, reflecting the international expertise of the Transport Research Groups of both the Royal Geographical Society and the Association of American Geographers. Modern Transport Geography takes a principles and practice approach which enables students to develop their own ideas on the basis of the contextual, analytical and case material provided. from reviews of Edition I This book has all the ingredients of a successful textbook… The presentation is both stimulating and thought provoking. There is a lot of up to date information on current and case studies from all parts of the world. And, finally, there are plenty of references for further reading. What more could one ask? 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Starting Point for World Geography
While the lesson plans and outlines are very useful to a homeschooler, it is not until you've purchased the book and begun to read the Introduction and Overview that you learn you need to outlay another twenty-eight dollars to the author, via their own website, for the student notebook used with the course. You also need to purchase additional books both a current edition of The World Almanac and, depending on the grade level of the student you are teaching, one of three Rand McNally World Atlases. So, while I will use this book to teach geography, I am not pleased to discover that this is solely a Teacher's Manual and not a complete course as the title initially suggests.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for multiple ages in one homeschool
This book is excellent if you are teaching kids at mulitple age levels. I do recommend that you get the CD-ROM that goes with it as it is a time-saver! Each week I print out the maps and worksheets, and we sit down to do mapping, pour over a few atlases for information, and go online to look up facts, etc. My kids (ages 5-14) are enjoying it more than any other geography program we have used. It takes very little time to prepare for the week, and not very long to complete the work and learn the material. I love it!! I've already bought the US version for next year! And, the best part, we can save it for future years as it have three levels of learning in the one book and Cd-ROM!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best geograpy book ever!
We have done a lot of geography in our years of homeschooling. This is the best system that I have found yet.I will accomodate several ages of children and really has them explore geography according to age and grade level. Then can also add to their geography notebook every year! This is the last geography curriculum I will buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Trail Guides Geography
Both Trail Guide to World and U.S. Geography are excellent resources. They contain everything that is needed for the study: lesson plans, study questions, activity suggestions, and any forms needed for the student's notebook. You will need outline maps which are easy to find online, an atlas (obviously), and an almanac. Trips to the library for extra research are helpful depending on how in depth you want to study. There are three age levels of study questions. Also, there are suggested schedules for covering the material over a period of one or two years. You decide how in depth a study you want to do with different trail guides and trail blazing activities. This is a very versatile resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Written
I am excited to get into this book.It is well written with lessons and ideas laid out for each continent. The fact that it will cover so many age groups is a huge plus for a homeschool co-op. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Distracting
There is blue highlighting throughout the text book which is extremely distracting and makes it difficult to read. Blue high-lighted books should come with a warning.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mighty effort that needs more perusal....
This reviewer can find no bibliographic data on THE GEOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA by Hardwick, et al. (Prentice-Hall, 2007) beyond Amazon's product listing (which is actually the one site in five I checked that actually showed page count: 704).And prior to this, no reviews at all on Amazon.Pity!THE GEOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA deserves better.

If I were a professor and wanted to order an exam copy for review, there are channels for that thru Prentice-Hall, the publisher, to get a freebie. But single-copy sales seem arduous, and I should not claim I am a college teacher any more. The best way is probably Amazon, though first I'd have to convince myself I need or want the book at the price.I don't think I have enough information to do that.

Thus far I have read the first chapter of the book, which is available free, online. As you might expect, it is written in a comfortable, conversational tone but offers insights into what is going to be discussed. In that sense it does a good deal of offering introduction to "methodology" without scaring newbie college students away with such terms.

The photo on the cover is a knockout! If memory serves it is a NOAA rendition of the USA taken from space, at night. My first geography teacher back at the University of Virginia - Wise introduced us to the concept of the "dry line," which separates arid steppe-like land to the west from land with sufficient rainfall for crops to the east.Note how easy that is to visualize with modern technology. If you want to confirm this in a paper mode, get a free copy of the state highway map of Kansas or Nebraska. You'll see the dry line very starkly on those states' maps, at the sudden fall-off of the density of towns and roads. (You could practically draw the north-south line of demarcation with a pencil.)

Makes sense! But consider that several generations of geographers have carefully measured such phenomena and crafted climate systems maps, where it can be scientifically measured just where the dry line occurs -- indeed, where the corn falls off and the wheat and milo begin. And from there we infer that soil, climate, latitude and longitude and land form combine to give us a real appreciation of ecology, in that the climatic and the terrestrial so often combine to maintain and reinforce themselves.

This book looks like a great way to begin.Sadly, among the scores of Geography Department college faculty in this great nation, and the hundreds if not thousands of students who major in it, NO ONE has written a content review even though THE GEOGRAPHY OF NORTH AMERICA has been in print steadily for almost two years (since August 2007).

If I can gain access to the entire book, you can bet I'll file a new review -- and if one sip of the wine speaks for the entire bottle, a better review.

Allen Smalling, a big fan of the late Glenn T. Trewartha, Ph.D. in Geography, U Wisconsin/Madison.

Product Description

Strabo (ca. 64 BCE to ca. 25 CE), an Asiatic Greek of Amasia in Pontus, studied at Nysa and after 44 BCE at Rome. He became a keen traveller who saw a large part of Italy, various near eastern regions including the Black Sea, various parts of Asia Minor, Egypt as far as Ethiopia, and parts of Greece. He was a long time in Alexandria where he no doubt studied mathematics, astronomy, and history.

Strabo's historical work is lost, but his most important Geography in seventeen books has survived. After two introductory books, numbers 3 and 4 deal with Spain and Gaul, 5 and 6 with Italy and Sicily, 7 with north and east Europe, 8–10 with Greek lands, 11–14 with the main regions of Asia and with Asia Minor, 15 with India and Iran, 16 with Assyria, Babylonia, Syria, and Arabia, 17 with Egypt and Africa. In outline he follows the great mathematical geographer Eratosthenes, but adds general descriptions of separate countries including physical, political, and historical details. A sequel to his historical memoirs, Geography is planned apparently for public servants rather than students—hence the accounts of physical features and of natural products. On the mathematical side it is an invaluable source of information about Eratosthenes, Hipparchus, and Posidonius.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Strabo is in eight volumes.

Product Description
Exploring a wide range of issues, from the integration of the world economy to how contemporary processes are shaping and shaped by nation-states and how workers are organizing transnationally in response to transformations in the planet’s economic geography, Geographies of Globalization is a critical examination of what has become the leitmotif of our contemporary world.

  • Challenges neoliberal assumptions on the nature of globalization
  • Provides a conceptual overview of how globalization is a spatial process and of its relation to capitalism
  • Explores whether we are in fact living in a more ‘globalized’ world or only in a more ‘internationalized’ one
  • Considers arguments concerning whether ‘globalization’ is a new phenomenon or simply the latest manifestation of processes many hundreds of years in the making
  • Focuses on how nation-states have shaped, and been shaped by, contemporary processes of ‘globalization’, how ‘globalization’ has been imagined discursively, and how workers are responding to such processes
  • Explores how workers are creating new organizing strategies in response to ‘globalization’

Product Description

Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities, including commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this textbook.

The second edition of "The Geography of transport systems" maintains the overall structure of its predecessor, with chapters dealing with specific conceptual dimensions and methodologies, but the contents have been revised and updated. The second edition also offers new topics and approaches that have emerged as critical issues in contemporary transport systems, including security, energy, supply chain management and GIS-T. Relevant case studies have also been included in the second edition to underline real world issues related to transport geography.

Some key points of the second edition:

  • Updated and revised conceptual and methodological material to reflect the most current issues in transport geography.
  • A case study for each chapter addressing a real world transportation geography issue.
  • Reorganization of the text to improve readability and continuity.
  • Updated and improved figures and maps.
  • Continuously updated and revised supporting web site.

Mainly aimed at an undergraduate audience, this edition of "The Geography of transport systems" provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the field with a broad overview of its concepts, methods and areas of application. It is highly illustrated and a companion web site has also been enhanced for the book. It contains PowerPoint slides, exercises, databases and GIS datasets and can be accessed at http://people.hofstra.edu/geotrans

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-explanatory
This is a book I've wanted to lay my hands on for a long time. This is a book that every geographer with an interest in transportation should read. It is also a book that every transportationist with a sense for geography should read. Even if your main focus is just transportation and nowhere near geography, this book will fascinate, because it so brilliantly explains, explores, researches and reviews the spatial impact of transportation systems and how they have shaped the world that surrounds us.

Transportation networks are the main arteries of society, ensuring a 24/7 operation ofthe community we live in. Transportation systems are also essential to supply chains. Without a proper transportation system supply chains cannot function properly. However, the menial day-to-day operations related to transportation are often overlooked in supply chain management. This book goes a long way in bridging this gap, as it touches upon topics such as freight transport and locations of terminals. It also extends the term supply chain by introducing a new term: the commodity chain.

It is not often that I fall in love with textbooks at first sight, and this is a book that will not spend much time collecting dust in my bookshelf, as I will read and use it again and again...

Product Description
Ethnic diversity has marked the United States from its inception and is now experiencing watershed changes in its social, cultural, and ethnic/racial geographies. Considering the impact of these transformations, this unique text examines a range of ethnic groups in both historical and contemporary context. The contributors present a rich set of case studies of key ethnic and racial communities_including those of long-standing significance such as Native Americans, African Americans, and Mexican Americans, along with the Latin American and Asian groups that make up the vast majority of newer immigrants. Exploring changing communities, places, and landscapes, this book offers a nuanced understanding of the evolution of America's ethnic geographies. ... Read more
