Vegetation Geography and Geographical Features Reportedly, the physical beauty of the region fascinated the first Europeans who traveled to the Caribbean. These Spaniards in Columbus' ships described the Caribbean as green and fertile, cooled by the trade winds, with a climate of `perpetual spring'. The lush vegetation, types of fruits and the flora and fauna were portrayed with great enthusiasm. The Caribbean region, located in the tropics, extends in a broad arc of over 4000 km from the Bahamas in the north to Guyana and Suriname in the south. The region also includes, based on historical factors, Belize which is in Central America bordering Mexico and Guatemala. The countries are widely different in physical and population size as well as landforms and geology. It is to be noted that Dominica, St. Vincent and most of St. Kitts have no white sand beaches. The volcanic ash that characterizes these islands is extremely fertile. Historically, St. Kitts has produced sugar cane with yields comparable to those of high yield sugar-producing countries, like Australia and Cuba. The verdant green of the valleys in St. Vincent is an indication of the fertility of the soil in that island.

Caribbean Travel Roundup September 1995 - Part 2 The second attraction is guadeloupe's geography. The The geography ofguadeloupe encourages tourists to explore the island. Therefore http://caribtravelnews.com/c0995_03.htm
Extractions: Back to September Index Guadeloupe by Paul Dacher We visited Guadeloupe in March 1995. This was our second trip to the island, our first being in 1993. This is the first time we have made a return trip to a Caribbean island. We previously visited Barbados and St. Martin. So, why did we decide to return? There are three things which attract us to this island. First, it is somewhat off the American tourist track. Not too many Americans visit Guadeloupe; indeed, there are only two American Airlines flights per day out of San Juan, using ATR turboprop aircraft. Tourists come primarily from France, although we saw a few more Americans on our second trip. The island is not dedicated to tourism. Industry is small, with many sugar and banana plantations, and distilleries. The second "attraction" is Guadeloupe's geography. The island is actually two islands connected by a bridge. The western island, Basse Terre, is higher in altitude and has an active (though sort of dormant you can smell it) volcano. The relatively high elevation of the west makes for a very lush, tropical environment. However, Grande Terre, the eastern island, is in a rain shadow. It is much drier, with more desert-type vegetation. The east and north coasts are quite rugged, with the Atlantic Ocean crashing in. The geography of Guadeloupe encourages tourists to explore the island. Therefore, unless you are at the Club Med or similar establishment which run tours around the island, you must rent a car if you want to get around. The roads are good, reflecting the importance of commerce to the island (as well as the availability of aid money from the European Union). They contrast sharply with the roads on St. Martin, which were terrible when we visited in 1991.

Extractions: Content Importance of coral reefs Geography Population ... Administration Geography Administratively, the French département of Guadeloupe comprises eight islands and numerous small islets : Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre make up Guadeloupe proper, around which lie the islands of Marie-Galante, Les Saintes (Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas), La Désirade, and, further north, Saint-Barthélemy and the French part of Saint-Martin. Guadeloupe (Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre) The two islands are surrounded by coral-dominated communities and fringing reefs. The Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin features a 29-km long barrier reef (78 km2). Seagrass beds are very extensive (9726 ha), especially in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin ; mangrove swamps are much less extensive, except those in the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin (3.000 ha). Marie-Galante Island (158 km2) lies 43 km to the south of Grande-Terre. There are some small fringing reefs off the eastern, south-eastern and southern shores. A submerged coral bank lies to the west, at a depth of about 20 m. Seagrass beds cover parts of the sandy bottom along the shoreline. The Saintes Archipelago covers some 13 km2 and comprises 6 small islands. The two largest (Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas) are inhabited. There are no true coral reefs along their shores, although the rocky parts of the seabed are colonised by corals. The sandy seabed areas support seagrass beds.
