Works written in ancient Greek have formed the basis for disciplines across the Liberal Arts spectrum from Drama, History, and Philosophy to Art, Mathematics and Physics. Learning to read ancient texts in their original language thus gives student an invaluable foundation from which to build their undergraduate education. Greek is also an extremely rich and precise language. The study of Greek invariably teaches skills of reading, writing, and even thinking that will benefit a student in whatever discipline s/he chooses to pursue. A member of the Indo-European language family, Greek has a continuous literary history which covers three millennia from the Homeric Iliad and Odyssey to the Modern Greek spoken in Greece today. The Greek that we study here is primarily Attic Greek, the Greek of 5th century BCE Athens. It is the language of such authors as Plato, Herodotus, Thucydides, and the tragedians Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Knowledge of Attic Greek allows a student to easily learn Homeric Greek and the dialect in which the New Testament is written, Koine.

Her main research interests are Greek Myth, Drama and ancient City. She helped establish the Center for Greek Studies, and since its foundation she has been one of its most active members. Dr. Leo Polopolus joined our faculty in 1965. He served as Department Chair from 1973-1983. His research is concentrated in agricultural marketing, labor and public policy.
