Extractions: 1225 BC included all of former Yugoslavia, that is, Dalmatia, Croatia, Bosnia, Herzogovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and portions of Macedonia and northern Greece. It was from one of the Illyrian tribes called the "Albanoi" located in central Albania, that the country derives its name. However, the Albanians call themselves " Shqipëtarë " and their country " Shqipëria" generally accepted to mean "landd of the eagles" because two of the Albanian words for eagle are "Shqipë" and "Shqiponjë." Shkodra, now one of the largest cities in Albania and located in the northern part of the country, was also the capital of Illyria so it has deep historic roots. The Romans conquered Illyria in 227 BC for which they had to pay dearly by making frequent expeditions across the Adriatic Sea to quell the insurrections that had become chronic. During the civil war between Caesar and Pompeii, Albania served as the battlegound for the contest of the supremacy of Rome. The decisive battle between Octavius and Antony for the imperial throne of Rome was also fought on the Albanian seacoast, and in commemoration of his naval victory at Actium, the future Emperor Augustus built the new city of Nicopolos on the southernmost part of the Albanian seaboard whose ruins may be seen in the modern-day city of Preveza which was taken away from Albania and assigned to Greece by the Ambassadors Conference of London in 1913.

The Times Of Our Lives: Social Rhythms And Cycles the week, each month has a rich folklore tradition of associated a sense the floweringof the culture comes before dusk not only from classical greece but in http://www.trinity.edu/~mkearl/time-3.html
Extractions: S OCIAL R HYTHMS, C YCLES, and C LOCKS Although the concept of a group often brings to mind spatial connotations, such as the different neighborhoods of a city or the "turfs" of street gangs, groups can also be understood as temporal systems. Members of work groups, for instance, cross the temporal boundary between family and work when they "punch in" at the company time clock. They are reminded of the pressures of group existence through such exhortations as "don't waste time" and "time is money." Mothers attempting to get all family members to the dinner table for a shared meal are attempting to reaffirm family solidarity through establishing the centrality of family time boundaries. It is the group that creates "time to get serious," "born-again experiences," the pressures of deadlines, and the daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal flows of activities. As Emile Durkheim observed in The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life , it "is the rhythm of social life which is at the basis of the category of time."

Komboloi - Don't Worry, Bead Happy In Greece Roadside shrines are everywhere in greece, some to commemorate victims of car accidents, others remnants of thousands of years of folk faith observances. greece. Peloponnese. Arts culture. Beaches Nude. Car Rentals. greece Maps. Cruises and Tours. Events folklore. Weather. Marriage in greece http://gogreece.about.com/library/weekly/aa020701a.htm
Extractions: Your first sight of komboloi may be in a blur of beads as you see them furiously worked by a nervous Greek passenger in the next seat as the plane starts to descend. Prayer bead or fidget toy, at that moment, komboloi fulfill both purposes. Or you may catch sight of them as you race past an airport souvenir stand, where they dangle by the dozens. Wherever you first notice them, they are bound to be strangely compelling. Once you touch them, and feel the smooth beads sliding through your fingers, you may find yourself hooked. Like most Greek folk art, the history of komboloi is uncertain. Some claim that they are a recent addition to mainland Greek culture, arriving only seventy or eighty years ago and then achieving a fashionable status. Or that they are a mimicry of Turkish prayer bead strands, adopted by persecuted Greeks to mock their captors. Still another theory suggests that the Turkish conquerors forbade their Greek subjects to shake hands, and the beads were introduced as a way of reminding Greeks to keep their hands to themselves.Others assert, probably more rightly, that they are derived from the knotted prayer strands (komboskini) used by Greek Orthodox monks. As the word komboloi means "group of knots", this may be the true origin.

PICTURES W ORLD MUSIC AND THE ORIENTALISING OF THE REBETIKA by Gail Holst-Warhaft [Cornell University] [4,354 words] Some of the material in this paper has been incorporated into a larger article to be published in Anthropology and Musicology (University of Bologna) as part of the proceedings of a conference held at the Fondazione Levy, Venice, in 2000. nationism (see Tziovas: 1986, 2-3) has been obsessed with determining the true character of modern Greece. I will not repeat what I and others have already on the debates that were played out from the late nineteenth to the mid twentieth century in the Greek press over the relative merits of the music of the cafés aman , and the cafés chantants (see Holst-Warhaft: 2000, Gauntlett: 1989, Hatzipantazis: 1986, Holst: 1978). What is interesting about the debate is that it highlights the very ambivalent feeling of Greeks towards their oriental past and on how Greek or non-Greek the music performed in the cafes aman was considered to be. Despite the fact that it was, in many ways, a home-grown hybrid, rebetiko was not associated with the ideal
