Extractions: In 1926, an American chemist named Charles Promislo accidentally spilled a beaker of chemicals on his laboratory table and left the mess to clean up in the morning. By the next day, the spilled liquids had soaked through some papers. The papers had reacted in a strange way, for each each sheet was aged, wrinkled and old. Being something of a history buff Mr Promislo was particularly intrigued by his discovery. He devoted several years to perfecting his unique 11- step paper ageing process. Some 20 years or so later a chance meeting occurred with one Victor Mort. Mr Mort from England was also something of an historian. He hit upon the wonderful idea of publishing old maps and applying the ageing process to each one. So it was that Porter Prints was born in the mid-1950's operating from the city of York in England. THE OLD MAP COMPANY still a family operation, takes pride in producing these authentic replicas on antiqued parchment paper that look and actually feel old. We could ask a considerably higher price for these wonderful maps. However, the goals of preserving England's history and educating people about our countries rich heritage, remain just the same as those of Charles Promislo, Victor Mort and indeed the great John Speed himself. As long as we are able to eek out a humble existence, the delight and praise we receive from our customers is our real reward.

Extractions: In his book, Crisis of Empire , Ian R. Christie attempted to give a brief, but a thorough, chronological overview of the causes and the consequences of the American Revolution. Dealing primarily with the period from 1754-1783, Christie, also included a terse review of the historical background which precipitated the settlement of the colonies, their general histories, and the events which laid the ground work for the crisis. Within the greater scope of writing a historical survey of this period, Christie also attempted to chronicle the difficulties which the British government had in formulating an equitable, and viable plan by which to govern their holdings in North America. And most important, this book was written from a British perspective. Christie's main purpose in writing this book was to provide a brief survey of a decisive moment in world history. Crisis of Empire was written especially for inclusion in the "Foundations of Modern History Series." Deliveries of production Spitfire I's began in June 1938, just over two years after 'Mutt' Summers flew the prototype at Southhampton on the 5th of March, 1936. In the two years preceding production, Supermarine laid out their Woolston factory for large-scale production and organized one of the largest subcontract schemes ever envisioned in Britain. Until that time, as it was becoming increasingly obvious that there was no limit to the likely demand for the Spitfire. It was also obvious that one factory alone was not going to be able to meet the demand even with subcontracting. Large scale plans were laid during 1937 for the construction by the Nuffield Group of a large new shadow factory at Castle Bromwich near Birmingham for Spitfire production. On April 12,1938 a contract was placed for 1,000 Spitfires to be built at this new factory, of which the actual construction had not then even begun. By the time of the Munich crisis on 12-13 September, 1938, only five Spifires had been completed. In the following year, on April 29 further contracts were placed with Supermarine for 200 Spitfires and on August 9 for 450. When Britain went to war on September 3,1939 a total of 2,160 Spitfires were already on order.

Extractions: History The first Round Table was formed in Norwich, England in 1927. The founder, Louis Marchesi, was a young member of Norwich Rotary Club who felt a need existed for a club where the young business men of the town could gather on a regular basis. At their meetings they could exchange ideas, learn from the experiences of their colleagues and play a collective part in the civic life of Norwich. Within a year of inception the membership of this Round Table had grown to 85 and interest was being shown in establishing Round Tables elsewhere. From a very early stage it was agreed that Round Table would be a non-religious, non-political club and this has continued to this day. A second Round Table was established in Portsmouth and subsequent growth was rapid, with 125 Tables and a membership of 4,600 by the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Round Table proved it had international appeal with the first overseas Table formed in Copenhagen in 1936. During the war years Round Table in Denmark continued to expand although in the British Isles activity was restricted and was in the nature of a 'holding operation'. After 1945 the pattern of growth was rapidly re-established with Tables being 'chartered' all over the UK. Today there are about 1,000 Tables with a membership of around 13,000. Round Table now flourishes in the majority of European countries, throughout Africa, the Middle East, India, Hong Kong, New Zealand and America. In fact Round Table is represented in every continent of the World.
