Product Description
This dictionary contains the Latin names of families, genera, species and many of their synonyms, of edible and poisonous mushrooms, other fungi and pathogens of fungal plant diseases, together with their identified English, German, French and Italian equivalents.

Particular attention has been given to the different common names in the English-speaking world - North America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, as well as those used in French-speaking Canada and Mauritius. This is of importance for host plants where the common name used in a particular region may not be that used in Britain or France and could possibly be that of another species or even of a different genus.

The synonyms are those the authors found in their sources and not intended to be a complete listing. The taxonomy is that used by the different authors of the sources.

The Basic Table gives the entries in alphabetic order of the Latin names. The English, German, French and Italian equivalents are, again in alphabetical order, listed in the respective indices and keyed to the Basic Table by reference numbers.

Product Description
Detailing current research on grass endophytes, this work presents procedures for isolation, inoculation, fungus and plant tissue culturing, staining and molecular methodology. Chapters on the ecology of grass hosts document the benefits of endophytes to grass hosts and discuss this topic in terms of a mathematical model. Chemical constituents of infected grasses and methods to alleviate toxic effects are identified. The current use of endophytes to increase plant hardiness in turf and forage grasses is explained. Techniques for screening and selecting endophytes and for genetic modification of endophytes are described. The text discusses the impact of endophyte-infected grasses on the environment, looks at the response of endophyte-infected grasses and grasslands to increased atmospheric CO2 and radiation, and provides techniques and procedures for studying endophytes. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Readers will perhaps be surprised to find a volume about fungiwithin a handbook of vegetation science. Although fungi traditionallyfeature in textbooks on botany, at least since Whittaker (1969), theyhave mostly been categorised as an independent kingdom of organismsor, in contrast to the animal and plant kingdom, as probionta togetherwith algae and protozoa. More relevant for ecology than the systematicseparation of fungi from plants is the different lifestyle of fungiwhich, in contrast to most plants, live as parasites, saprophytes orin symbiosis. Theoretical factors aside, there are also practicalmethodological considerations which favour the distinction betweenfungal and plant communities, as has been shown for example byDörfelt (1974).
Despite their special position the coenology of fungi has been dealtwith in the handbook of vegetation science. It would be wrong toconclude that we underestimate the important differences betweenfungal and plant communities. The reasons for including the former arethat mycocoenology developed from phytocoenology, the similarity ofthe methods and concepts still employed today and the closecorrelation between fungi and plants in biocoenoses.

Product Description
Dame Helen Gwynne-Vaughan (1879-1967) was a prominent British mycologist, specialising in the sexual process of fungi. In 1909 she was appointed Head of the Department of Botany at Birkbeck College, becoming Professor of Botany when Birkbeck College joined the University of London in 1920. This volume was first published in 1922 as part of the Cambridge Botanical Handbooks series. The introduction provides a detailed description of the structure, sexual reproduction, parasitism and symbiosis of all fungi, with subsequent chapters describing fully the morphology and reproduction of genera within the phylum ascomycetes and the orders ustilaginales and uredinales on which Gwynne-Vaughan based her research. Illustrations and a bibliography accompany each chapter. This volume provides an insight into the study of mycology in the early twentieth century, before technological advances in the field of cytology revolutionized the discipline. ... Read more

Product Description
Following the success of the first edition of this work in 1927, a revised and enlarged second edition was published in 1937. It is this latter edition which is reproduced here. Material added to the second edition gave emphasis to the importance of flagellation as a guide to the interrelationships of the Phycomycetes and incorporated the discovery of heterothallism in rusts. In general, the style of the book was aimed at the student rather than the investigator, and it therefore benefits from an ease of readability as well as numerous illustrations. Although considerable advances have been made in the field of study since 1937, this volume will be of remaining value to anyone interested in the history of science in the early twentieth century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars dated, but still useful
Although the first edition copy is somewhat dated, the basic morphological descriptions are still very useful. This is a good introductory mycology book, as long as you promptly read another, more up-to-date version right after reading this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fungi, mysteries and fascinations
This book is a very good overview of the kingdom Fungi. With an easy vocabulary usage, the authors were able to entertain the reader with very well done chapters. Although some of the topics could have been streesed a little deeper, the book is perfect for college students enrolled in classes such as introductory mycoloy and fungal systematics. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
A significant addition to the field of fungus-insect relationships, this book presents an interesting array of approaches to the subject of evolutionary and ecological associations of insects and fungi, written by both mycologists and entomologists. The editors have preserved a reasonable balance between theoretical articles, reviews, and those containing analysis of original data. Free-living relationships are stressed, complementing previously published studies on fungus-insect associations. The volume is indispensable as an introduction to modern approaches in the field, a reference on host associations, and a theoretical basis for future research. The editors and contributors have sought to achieve two goals: 1) to provide examples of current research in studies of the ecology and evolution of fungus-insect relationships, including many important techniques, references, and lists of relationships, and 2) to suggest some modern theoretical approaches to studies of a pattern which is largely historical in nature.Modern ecological and evolutionary methods are exemplified by contributions to the book, and other papers present indispensable summaries of relationships and crucial methods fro the accurate interpretation of fungus-insect associations.Because the origin of these relationships is fundamentally a historical questions, the application of recent theoretical advances in cladistic methods in biology, described and used in several papers in the book, provides fresh opportunities and challenges at the interface of mycology and entomology. ...
