4-0 out of 5 stars It's Alright
This book it full of useful information.Unfortunatley, very very full.It is a un-interesting read and isn't very easy to understand.I don't think I would have bought it had I known it would be so hard to keep my attention on.I will however keep it, because it is so full of information.I recommend this book to anyone that needs detailed information, very detailed.Maybe I'll give it over the winter for me to push my way through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You've got to get this book and try gardening with this method!
My purchase of the book this time around was simply to restock my library and to share with my community garden team.I saw John Jeavons speak at a fair in California about 20 years ago and thought what the heck, I've got to try this.It worked so well I had people from all over Mendocino, Ca. coming to look at my garden; things grew huge and happy with no pesticides or non-organic fertilizers!I was amazed and have been using this method ever since.I now live in Texas and gardening is a real challenge here due to heat, sun and wind, but the method works tried and true even under these conditions. You don't have to follow everything in the book (planting on moon cycles, for example); planting on centers alone will radically change your garden and increase your yield from anything you plant using this method (flowers, vegetables, cover crops, etc).It is ideal for small or large space gargening; we're using it in our large community garden.Soil is the "sponge" your plants will grow in and this book really teaches you how to care for it with charts, illustrations and easy to follow instructions. The reference charts are an amazing wealth of information; I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A *must have* if you're serious about growing your own food
This book is the bible for those of us that are serious about raising our own food.
You simply must have this book if your goal is to grow your own food, it's that simple.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information
I really like this book so far. I have read it and plan to read it again since it has so much information to absorbe. I found it to be extremly helpful and has wonderful information. Not only does it tell you the best way to prepare the soil it also tells you how to keep the soil up, companion planting, garden set up for the first few years and so much more.
What I did not like was that it would sometimes give you a nice tid-bit of information but then refers you to another book or artical that it came from if you want the rest of the information or "further" informtaion.
All in all, I think its a pretty good book with a lot of great information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intensive gardening
This book takes the concept of Square Foot Gardening andreally expands on the idea. You always start with the soil. This author makes it seem easy to double dig garden beds. This is an ancient technique going back to ancient Greece and China. The theory is that if the soil is loose and aerated to a depth of 24" or so the roots will grow deeper, and be stronger. Having used this technique myself I know that I have always gotten a higheryield in the beds that have been double dug.

I think that this author gives long time gardeners some ideas for consideration, and he also gives novice gardeners a plan to follow. And he always goes back to the soil, building it year after year, until it will be black gold.

Editorial Review

Product Description
The General Introduction.
This compendium presents standardized information on approximately 150 edible horticultural crops. It has been designed principally to help with the task of fitting crops to land, but it can also be used for a variety of other purposes.
The information contained in the compendium is intended to serve exploratory thinking. Such thinking attempts to review all the cropping possibilities, exclude those which are obviously unsuitable, and identify those worth considering further using detailed information and different methods of thought and analysis.
The compendium has been produced because using books, reviews and abstracts for such exploratory thinking can be extremely time-consuming and frustrating. What has been attempted here is to compile information in a consistent form and present it so that it can be searched quickly. Users will find that not only can they rapidly review the basic characteristics of crops they are interested in, but they can also compare them quickly, something rarely possible with conventional crop descriptions.
To obtain the information for the compendium, a data-handbook (the Compiler's Handbook) was designed. Persons were found who were willing to compile data for individual crops, and the editors collected the entries. Data-sets were obtained for all the major crops and for a wide range of minor and rare crops.
The information is presented under approximately 70 headings covering the botany, ecology, husbandry, storage and uses of the crops. It was found to be sufficient to concentrate attention largely on the species level, but the range of characteristics exhibited by commercial and domestic cultivars is also indicated for some crop attributes. ...
