Product Description

There can scarcely be a greater tribute to the vitality of the Fifth Republic's democracy than this monumental work. A searching analysis of how the will of the voters is translated into authoritative political decision making, this book not only uncovers political truths about contemporary France but also provides a model for the study of other popular forms of government.

The authors set out to find an answer to the perplexing question of how representative government operates in France in the seemingly unstable context of multiparties. By interviewing voters as well as legislators in 1967 and in 1968 after the great upheaval, and by monitoring policies of the National Assembly from 1967 to 1973, the authors test relationships between public opinion and decision making. They are able to sort out the abiding political cues that orient the French voter, to establish the normal electoral processes, to gauge the nature of mass perceptions of the political options available to voters, and to interpret the strikes, riots, and demonstrations of 1968 as a channel of communication parallel to the electoral process itself.

Lucid in style, methodologically sophisticated, and often comparative in approach, Political Representation in France is a seminal work for political scientists, sociologists, and historians.

Product Description

Contagion was a persistent theme in discussions about urban and industrial social problems in nineteenth-century France. From the cholera epidemic of 1832 to the Public Health Law of 1902, contagious disease was associated with poverty by scientists, government administrators, and politicians. They debated the moral, economic, and social causes of disease and sought new and innovative justifications and techniques for regulating the factors associated with disease. In so doing, French scientific and government elites transformed the efforts to explain and prevent contagion into a new way of thinking about social problems in general.

Drawing on the approaches of intellectual and social history and the work of Michel Foucault, the author investigates the intersection of scientific, political, and professional interests that informed perceptions and understandings of contagion in nineteenth-century France. By charting the development of the modern notion of contagion in France—from the highest echelons of scientific research in the Academy of Medicine to the activities of government authorities to the work of neighborhood hygiene commissions in Paris—the author reveals how the preoccupation with disease was mediated by an attempt to expand the possibilities of government intervention into urban and industrial life, especially life among the working poor.

All in all, the book not only offers a more nuanced explanation of how scientific knowledge about disease was produced but also reveals the emergence of science as a form of state social power that significantly extended the scope of government in Republican France.

Product Description
SOE in France was first published in 1966, followed by a second impression with amendments in 1968. Since these editions were published, other material on SOE has become available. It was, therefore, agreed in 2000 that Professor Foot should produce a revised version. In so doing, in addition to the material in the first edition, the author has had access to previously closed government records, as well as drawing upon his own invaluable wartime experiences and the recollections of those involved.

SOE in France begins by explaining what SOE was, where it fitted into the Allied war machine, and how it worked in France. The narrative then recounts the adventures of its agents who worked on French soil. This intricate tale concentrates on the work of the 400 hand-picked men and women of the 'independent French' section, although it also covers SOE's five other sections that operated mainly in France. All told, the six sections despatched over 1,800 clandestine agents, who between them changed the course of the war. This updated new edition will be essential reading for scholars and for all those with an informed general interest in the activities of the SOE. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The seminal text on SOE in France
This book is carefully researched, clearly written and updated. It is THE book on the SOE in France (and I have read a few along the way).I ordered this all the way from the US of A and I am not disappointed. This is a serious read however, not a light paperback, so only get it if you are really interested / obsessed in the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed
This is the only book in my library where I have bought all three editions of the same work. I also compared the three versions and noted the changes that the author made.

The Special Operations Executive was Churchill's "Department of Ungentlemanly Warfare". Founded in 1940 with the idea of supporting resistance movements that arose in the wake of the German expansion. The SOE existed to supply agents who could coordinate guerrilla warfare activity and arrange for the supply of arms and equipment to the resistance groups. Owing to its strategic importance, population and opportunity for resistance activity France was to receive the most attention of the SOE in Western Europe.

M R D Foot was a decorated soldier soldier who served with the SAS in France in 1944. He was also an academic who was approached by the British government to write an official history of the Special Operations Executive. In the capacity he was given unprecedented access to the surviving records to the SOE. As someone who has study this subject for years I know from personal experience at the Public Records Office in London, even 55 years after the liberation of France not all of the records are yet in the public domain. The work is based upon records only, Prof. Foot was not given access to surviving agents but despite this he still manages to bring to life the actions in the SOE in helping to liberate France.

If you are interested in Asymmetrical Warfare, the French Resistance, the Special Operations Executive or the origins of the CIA then you can not do better than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOE in France by M.D.R. Foot
I am delighted with this book, not only with its contents but with the seller. I am in Florida and the book arrived well ahead of advertised number of days in excellent condition.Thank you 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars SOE's Secret War
If you only buy one book on the history of SOE in france then this should be the one. The job was to set Europe ablaze in the words of Churchill and they were a thorn in Germany's side. The operations and agents who carried them out are described in great detail including the nightmare of capture by the Gestapo and death in the camps or by firing squad. I have had a copy for years and value it greatly. ... Read more

Product Description
The French Constitutional Council, a quasi-judicial body created at the dawn of the Fifth Republic, functioned in relative obscurity for almost two decades until its emergence in the 1980s as a pivotal actor in the French policymaking process. Alec Stone focuses on how this once docile institution, through its practice of constitutional review, has become a meaningfully autonomous actor in the French political system. After examining the formal prohibition against judicial review in France, Stone illustrates how politicians and the Council have collaborated over the course of the last decade, often unintentionally and in the service of contradictory agendas, to significantly enhance Council's power. While the Council came to function as a third house of Parliament, the legislative work of the government and Parliament was meaningfully "juridicized." Through a discussion of broad theoretical issues, Stone then expands the scope of his analysis to the politics of constitutional review in Germany, Spain, and Austria. ... Read more

Product Description
France granted independence to its former colonies in West and Central Africa in the early 1960s. Nevertheless, thanks to a network of formal and informal agreements with these countries, France continues to wield considerable power and influence over them politically, economically, socially, and culturally. Through the various successive governments of the French Fifth Republic, the African policy of France has been exceptionally constant and stable. This study analyzes how the persistent situation of dominance/dependency and the continuity in foreign policy developed. Important changes that have developed recently in the relationship are analyzed, and suggestions for the future are given. ... Read more

Product Description

The picturesque town of Dreux, 60 miles west of Paris, quietly entered history in 1821, when Victor Hugo won the hand of his beloved there. Another century and a half would pass before the town made history again, but this time there was nothing quiet about it. In 1983, Jean-François Le Pen's National Front candidates made a startling electoral gain in the Dreux region. Its liberal traditions had ended abruptly. With the radical right controlling the municipal council and the deputy mayor's office, Dreux became the forerunner of neofascist advances all across the nation. How could it happen?

A trained historian, Gaspard was born in Dreux and served as the city's socialist mayor from 1977 to 1983. She brings this experience to bear in her study, giving us an evocative picture of the town in all its particularity and at the same time fitting it into the broader context. Local history, collective memory, political life, the role of personality, partisanship, and rumor, the claims of newcomers and oldtimers, Muslims and Catholics: Gaspard sifts through these factors as she crafts a clear and rousing account of the conditions that brought the National Front to power. Viewed amid the explosive consequences of recent demographic and economic transformations, Dreux, with a population of about 30,000, is facing big-city problems: class conflict, unemployment, racism. This is a book about the decline of small-town "virtues" and, more ominously, the democratic ideal in France. With its disturbing implications for other European nations and the United States, it could well be a parable for our time.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Relevant than Ever
Gaspard, a historian and the one-time socialist mayor of the small town of Dreux, sets out to explain how the extreme-right National Front took control of the municipal council of Dreux in the 1980s.What follows is an insightful and provocative analysis of the failure of politics in an era of changing economic fortunes. There's much to learn here on patterns of immigration, town planning, and local politics. It is not beach reading, but should be considered essential for anyone who wants to understand the crisis of integration in France today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unbelivable ...
I am astonished that this book might be the support material of a Harvard course...
First of all, there is a massive mistake on the backcover of the book "Jean-Francois Le Pen" is in fact "Jean-Marie Le Pen". It is such an obvious mistake - it looks like a joke !
But OK, let's admit it's only a translation mistake, it doesn't change the overall quality of the book.

Just to let you know, the author is part of the left side of the french left wing - She is a typical example of the generation of "soixante-huitard" french intellectuals, who use to support the maoism if not the stalinism.

Product Description
Nineteenth-century France grew fascinated with the local past. Thousands of citizens embraced local archaeology, penned historical vignettes and monographs, staged historical pageants, and created museums and pantheons of celebrities. Stéphane Gerson’s rich, elegantly written, and timely book provides the first cultural and political history of what contemporaries called the "cult of local memories," an unprecedented effort to resuscitate the past, instill affection for one‚s locality, and hence create a sense of place. A wide range of archival and printed sources (some of them untapped until now) inform the author’s engaging portrait of a little-known realm of Parisian entrepreneurs and middling provincials, of obscure historians and intellectual luminaries.

Arguing that the "local" and modernity were interlaced, rather than inimical, between the 1820s and 1890s, Gerson explores the diverse uses of local memories in modern France—from their theatricality and commercialization to their political and pedagogical applications. The Pride of Place shows that, contrary to our received ideas about French nationhood and centralism, the "local" buttressed the nation while seducing Parisian and local officials. The state cautiously supported the cult of local memories even as it sought to co-opt them and grappled with their cultural and political implications. The current enthusiasm for local memories, Gerson thus finds, is neither new nor a threat to Republican unity. More broadly yet, this book illuminates the predicament of countries that, like France, are now caught between supranational forces and a revival of local sentiments. ... Read more

France has shifted toward morenormalpolitics since the mid 1960s. That s saying a lot for a country that has had three monarchies, five republics, two empires, and a neo-fascist regime in the years since its revolution in 1789. Hauss s lively and up-to-date new text looks beyondde Gaulle s revolution, tracing France s historical development up to the present and describing with fresh insight its political culture, parties, interest groups, and institutional system, as well as its place in the EU and the larger global economic order. Hauss offers lively analysis of recent events and issues, including the May 2007 presidential elections; hot-button policy issues like immigration and the assimilation of non-Westerners into the French cultural and political landscape and the impact of the EU on France s economic policies.

Product Description

Early one morning in 1996, the sanctuary of a Parisian church was suddenly disrupted by a police raid. A group of undocumented immigrant families had taken refuge in the church under threat of deportation due to the French state's increasingly restrictive immigration policies. Rather than disperse and hide, these sans-papiers—people literally without papers— came together to bring to light the deep contradictions in the French state's immigration policies and practices.

Reinventing the Republic chronicles the struggle of the sans-papiers to become rights-bearing citizens, and links different social movements to reveal the many ways in which concepts of citizenship and nationality intersect with debates over gender, sexuality, and immigration. Drawing on in-depth interviews and a variety of texts, this disquieting book provides new insights into how exclusion and discrimination operate and influence each other in the world today.
