Product Description
This volume brings together a number of distinctive contributions in the areas of fractals, chaos, and the interrelationship between the two domains. These contributions cover a wide variety of application areas, and this indicates the extent to which fractals and chaotic phenomena are being studied in the various disciplines. It is anticipated that the interdisciplinary nature of the subject will increase, which in turn will yield useful information on the potential (and also limitations in some cases) of fractals and chaos as modeling tools for the investigation of various natural and scientific phenomena. It is hoped that an understanding of fractals and chaos will lead to a common basis for examining the growth, development, organization, and behaviour of complex dynamical systems, many of which make up the natural world of which we are part. It is anticipated that the investigations of fractal structure associated with phase portraits will be an exciting area for future work. ... Read more

Product Description
This book develops deterministic chaos and fractals from the standpoint of iterated maps, but the method of analysis and choice of emphasis make it very different from all other books in the field. It is written to provide the reader with an introduction to more recent developments, such as weak universality, multifractals, and shadowing, as well as to older subjects such as universal critical exponents, devil's staircases, and the Farey tree. Throughout the book the author uses a fully discrete method, a "theoretical computer arithmetic," because finite (but not fixed) precision is a fact of life that cannot be avoided in computation or in experiment. This approach leads to a more general formulation in terms of symbolic dynamics and to the idea of weak universality. The author explains why continuum analysis, computer simulations, and experiments form three entirely distinct approaches to chaos theory. In the end, the connection is made with Turing's ideas of computable numbers. It is explained why the continuum approach leads to predictions that are not necessarily realized in computations or in nature, whereas the discrete approach yields all possible histograms that can be observed or computed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A cool book that I wish the authors would update!
I really loved this book when it came out, and wish the authors would get together to update both the material in the book and the software that came with it to run on 'modern' computing equipment, (this was written when DOS was still king!)The book provided a really good, hands-on approach to fractal theory. It is a little light on application, but wasn't meant to have any of that, so I can forgive and forget.Moving down through to the borders of a Mandlebrot or Julia set in 16bit colour was amazing, and I would love to see what it would look like in the 16 million + colours available on computers today! ... Product Description
The authors describe mostly in non-technical language thedevelopment of a new scientific paradigm based on nonlineardeterministic dynamics and fractal geometry. The concepts from thesetwo mathematical disciplines are interwoven with data from thephysical, social and life sciences. In this way rather sophisticatedmathematical concepts are made accessible through experimental datafrom various disciplines, and the formalism is relegated toappendices. It is shown that the complexity of natural and socialphenomena invariably lead to inverse power law distributions, both interms of probabilities and spectra. This book tries to show how tothink differently about familiar phenomena, such as why the bell-shapecurve ought not to be used in teaching or in the characterization ofsuch complex phenomena as intelligence. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Intuitively good book for Beginners in C/C++
Many authors have the idea, writing down every detail and everything they know, is best suitable for readers. The result is a thick and dry book you can read and understand only at a speed of 10 lines per day, that means you will never finish reading it. THIS BOOK instead, just INTRODUCES and MOTIVATES you in beginning learning C. Psychologicaly and intuitively very well written, it starts with chapters of only 4 or 5 pages length, increasing with your growing skills. It begins with just the necessary objects a beginner is interested in. Example: What do you see in a C program-code first? This book immediately explains you the "include" - directive and parameters of function "main(int argc, char *argv)". Some programs are implemented just for typing codes or showing you the possibilities of programming. You needn't understand them, just ENJOY.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not what the reviews say it is.
Despite the publishers copy, this book is poorly written and is emphatically *not* for beginners to C, programming, or fractals.Mr. Stevens omits many details of both the C language and of fractal generation.None of his programs are commented. For some reason he has left out several important pieces of code that are not obvious to the beginner; they generate errors that required unnecessary time to repair.

In short, I do not recommend this book for beginners; for others, caveat emptor, as you will be frustrated by the opaque writing and lack of documentation. ... Read more

Product Description
This book deals with fractal geometries that have features similar to ones of ordinary Euclidean spaces, while at the same time being quite different from Euclidean spaces.. A basic example of this feature considered is the presence of Sobolev or Poincaré inequalities, concerning the relationship between the average behavior of a function and the average behavior of its small-scale oscillations. Remarkable results in the last few years through Bourdon-Pajot and Laakso have shown that there is much more in the way of geometries like this than have been realized, only examples related to nilpotent Lie groups and Carnot metrics were known previously. On the other had, 'typical' fractals that might be seen in pictures do not have these same kinds of features. This text examines these topics in detail and will interest graduate students as well as researchers in mathematics and various aspects of geometry and analysis. ... Read more

Product Description
The philosophical and analytical silhouette of quantum mechanics can only take shape against a background of classical mechanics. As classical mechanics has undergone a radical reappraisal with the discovery of deterministic chaos and fractals, then quantum mechanics must be looked at again from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics. This book does just that, not solely from the point of view of quantum chaos, but also by looking at the hidden chaotic roots of quantum mechanics. Several of the contributions included in the book are concerned with the geometrization of physics and its consequences for quantum mechanics. Besides the main theme of the book, other equally interesting interpretations are represented, including the cellular automaton version of quantum mechanics and a radical endophysical interpretation: another contribution looks at the possibility of chaos in Einstein's fundamental equations. Some of the papers presented here are destined to be the subject of debate, agreement and passionate disagreement for some time. ... Read more

Product Description
The study of nonlinear dynamical systems has been gathering momentum since the late 1950s. It now constitutes one of the major research areas of modern theoretical physics. The twin themes of fractals and chaos, which are linked by attracting sets in chaotic systems that are fractal in structure, are currently generating a great deal of excitement. The degree of structure robustness in the presence of stochastic and quantum noise is thus a topic of interest. Chaos, Noise and Fractals discusses the role of fractals in quantum mechanics, the influence of phase noise in chaos and driven optical systems, and the arithmetic of chaos. The book represents a balanced overview of the field and is a worthy addition to the reading lists of researchers and students interested in any of the varied, and sometimes bizarre, aspects of this intriguing subject. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for Beginners
This is a nicely designed book with all the basic information on using the Painter 5. For a beginner this is a must have book, however, do not expect to learn much if you are an intermediate or expert user. Actually, the bookitself deserves 4 stars, but the included CD lowers the value for Windowsusers -- while the demo Painter 5 for Mac is there, the CD does not includethe demo version of Painter 5 for Windows.

Product Description
In recent years there has been an explosive growth in the study of physical, biological, and economic systems that can be profitably studies using densities. Because of the general inaccessibility of the mathematical literature to the nonspecialist, little diffusion of the applicable mathematics into the study of these "chaotic" systems has taken place. This book will help bridge that gap.To show how densities arise in simple deterministic systems, the authors give a unified treatment of a variety of mathematical system generating densities, ranging from one-dimensional discrete time transformations through continuous time systems described by integro-partial-differential equations. Examples have been drawn from many fields to illustrate the utility of the concepts and techniques presented, and the ideas in this book should thus prove useful in the study of a number of applied sciences. The authors assume that the reader has a knowledge of advanced calculus and differential equations. Basic concepts from measure theory, ergodic theory, the geometry of manifolds, partial differential equations, probability theory and Markov processes, and stochastic integrals and differential equations are introduced as needed. Physicists, chemists, and biomathematicians studying chaotic behavior will find this book of value. It will also be a useful reference or text for mathematicians and graduate students working in ergodic theory and dynamical systems. ... Read more

Product Description
This textbook is intended to supplement the classical theory of uni- and multivariate splines and their approximation and interpolation properties with those of fractals, fractal functions, and fractal surfaces. This synthesis will complement currently required courses dealing with these topics and expose the prospective reader to some new and deep relationships. In addition to providing a classical introduction to the main issues involving approximation and interpolation with uni- and multivariate splines, cardinal and exponential splines, and their connection to wavelets and multiscale analysis, which comprises the first half of the book, the second half will describe fractals, fractal functions and fractal surfaces, and their properties. This also includes the new burgeoning theory of superfractals and superfractal functions. The theory of splines is well-established but the relationship to fractal functions is novel. Throughout the book, connections between these two apparently different areas will be exposed and presented. In this way, more options are given to the prospective reader who will encounter complex approximation and interpolation problems in real-world modeling. Numerous examples, figures, and exercises accompany the material. ... Read more
