Since the release of Zero to Three's principles on assessment of young children, child welfare social workers and other professionals have improved ways to incorporate parents and parenting caregivers into their child's team. However, given the increasing numbers of young children coming into care, and their risk for long-term disability, it is imperative that child welfare social workers become the catalyst to improve options for all young foster children. This paper provides a brief overview of young children in the foster care system and discusses the role of parents and parenting caregivers in the assessment of young children. The paper then explores the interdependence of assessment and intervention and the challenges involved with including parents and parenting caregivers in the assessment of their children. Utterly unhelpful.
This book was utterly unhelpful in so many ways!

The author assumes that foster parents have bio children, so she says things like, "For the majority of foster children, you should raise the child just as you did your own," and "If your foster child is having tantrums and the child is quite young, use the same approach you did with your own child."Well, since I don't have any children, that doesn't really help me!

Other sections just don't give any suggestions at all.In a section titled, "What to do in the first few hours," she writes, "Certain questions will immediately make the child feel better, and others might cause discomfort.Try to avoid the uncomfortable questions."(No, really?I don't want to make the child uncomfortable?)But she makes NO suggestions about what are good things to discuss and what you should avoid.I mean, some things are obvoius, but a little more guidance would be nice.

There are sections about illness and injury, most of which are so common sense that even I -- childless though I am -- didn't need a book to tell me.(Besides, there are many other better books out there dealing with that kind of thing.)And if you already have children (as she seems to assume), then why would you need such obvious instruction?

The author is a pediatrician, and this is where she claims to have gained her knowledge about foster children.There is no indication that she has ever been a foster parent or even considered being a foster parent.So how can she claim to know how to parent a foster child?

In all, I was not the least bit pleased with this book.There were a handful of good comments and ideas in it, but I don't think it's anything I won't get in my training.

Useless
A poorly wrtten, superficial overview of the complexities of the foster care system.Don't waste your money; there are better resources for a whole lot less money!

Wonderful words of wisdom--easy to understand
Whether one is foster parent or considering becoming one, this wise and humane book will be of great value.The author has lots of experience andshows great common sense.It is a book for the professional and for thefoster parent.

My thoughts after reading this book.
I am a nurse and have worked with foster children for more than 25 years. I feel that this book provides an insight into the situation these kids are in. They are really victims, and they need a great deal of support. Thebook gives a lot of information for all ages of foster children, and allkinds of problems. I would highly recommend this book for every fosterparent. ... Read more

Foster Parenting Abused children- a review
This pamphlet serves as a wonderful resource to both those in profesional fields dealing with child abuse as well as those lay persons just entering this world through their consideration of foster parenting. As a researcher I was greatful for such a compact, to the point resource. As someone working with parents I was greatful for the open and easy to understand writing style of Eliana Gil. I have found all of Eliana Gil's works most useful and am greatful that this resource is available to those out there who may not be as interested in her works which are written in a more scholarly (although still understandable) voice. ... Helpful information
This book provides information about sexual abuse in children, some resulting behaviors and feelings, and suggestions on how to help. This book can be a good compliment to professional therapy that a child goes through. Help Get Families Back Together
The editors have put together chapters from several different authors to share perspectives on how to help families reunify when children have been removed to foster care.This book should be most beneficial to persons who are attempting to implement or improve the delivery of family reunification programs.However, there are "jewels" throughout the book that should help anyone working in the foster care setting.

The various authors not only explain why it is important to reunify families when possible, but methods and programs are shared to give case workers ideas of how to improve their services.A great bonus with this book is that it is well-editedso that the chapters are actually enjoyable and easy to read.

Sound advice, interesting examples
I've listened to several of the Love & Logic cd's, and found this one comparably helpful.It reinforces the basic Love & Logic approach to raising kids, and supports with easy-to-listen-to stories and explanations.This is the best and most positive approach to parenting that I have seen.I highly recommend this or any other of the Love & Logic materials.
