Product Description
Athletes who know how to win are rare. These visceral, inventive geniuses and cool magicians somehow find a way to pull it out and engineer most of the upsets, comebacks, and miracle endings that break the hearts of those who come up short or flop. Then there are the numerous good-but-not-great individuals or teams who step up for one clutch moment, game, or match, play over their heads, and win the day on a combination of guts and skill.

Readers love learning about the all-pro quarterback whose offbeat comment in the huddle led his team to a last-second Super Bowl triumph; and two great horses who battled head-to-head on all three legs of a Triple Crown only one of them could win; an Olympic swimmer who sacrificed his spot in a race so that a teammate could win a gold medal; a pitcher who never played in the big leagues again after losing a World Series game on the only hit he gave up; a 45-year-old coach who had never played in the goal and prevailed in a Stanley Cup game; and the American wrestler who did the impossible and won an Olympic gold medal by upsetting an opponent who was considered unbeatable. And that’s only six of the eighty-four exciting stories.

This is a book to pick up when you have a few minutes or more, dip into, and have fun. You’ll then want to read more stories right away, or look forward to the next time. Over half of the stories won’t be immediately familiar to most readers, although many will stimulate pleasant recollections. The vignettes covering the more celebrated events contain surprising data and fresh observations, and will make even the most knowledgeable readers smile.
Guts In the Clutch: 77 Legendary Triumphs, Heartbreaks, and Wild Finishes is full in scope and loaded with fascinating anecdotes. This unexampled book includes
a range of remarkable stories from 12 sports: Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Track and Field, Golf, Boxing, Thoroughbred Racing, plus an assortment of rare vignettes from several other sports, including Swimming, College and Olympic Wrestling, Soccer, and Gymnastics.

A book about legends must include the Boston Celtics, New York Yankees, and Montreal Canadiens sports dynasties along with the struggles of their perennial victims: Lakers (until 1985), Red Sox (until 2004), and Bruins (still waiting). Two other storied runs, UCLA basketball and thoroughbred racing’s Calumet Farm, will also trigger memories and deliver fresh insights.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great holiday gift!

(disclosure: I read this book in galley form and reviewed it).

Since it's rainy and glunky in Chicago these days (it's a seasonal thing), I picked up "Guts in the Clutch" for a second read last Saturday and I have to admit that it was even better than the first go-through.I had been blown away by Richard and Pamela's attention to detail and the nuance of so many moments in sports, but this second read revealed things I'd either missed the first time, or perhaps not made the time to contemplate.

Ultimately, this book isn't only about sports but about people and how they experience challenges. The seemingly endless number of vignettes read like little adventures.

I'm biased because i know the authors and I liked the book the first time around.I liked it even more the second time, and it occurred to me that it would make a great gift this holiday season.I couldn't recommend it more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Inspiring
"Guts in the Clutch" is filled with stories that make you want to cheer even louder for any player or coach who has the strength and determination it takes to become legenadary in sports.A wonderful read for an avid sports fan or great inspiration for anyone looking for motivation to achieve their own personal best.Entertaining and thoroughly researched, this book uniquely tells the "stories behing the stories" of many of sports greatest legends.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sports Book for Everyone
I had the good fortune to read a copy of this book in manuscript form more than a year ago.It was good then and the authors have made it even better since then.Simply put this is a sports book for everyone!

This is a book for the sports follower who likes the highlights: the top ten plays, the day's highlights, the championship game, the MVP moments and basically the top performances.More importantly this is a book about the human condition of sports and about the triumph of individuals in pressure situations.Even the non-sports fan can be roused emotionally by those unique moments in sports when sports is transcended and the extreme emotional highlights of humanity come to the fore.It is often in sports that the heroic, the triumphant, the inspirational performance and the transcendent moment of the human spirit is there for all of us to see. "Guts in the Clutch captures the top 77 such moments in one place.

If you are a sports fan, or just a human looking for inspiration, this book is a most worthy investment. In three words:Buy this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift Book
I enjoyed Guts in the Clutch very much.It would make a great gift for Father's Day or a birthday. You can read about one athlete's achievemnents, put it down, and pick it up again later. The author's write in such a way that they draw you right in each time and keep your interest throughout.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gut Pleasing
Guts in the Clutch is a unique look at famous, and not so famous, sports legends. Noyes and Robertson flawlessly recreate the drama, the tension and the magic of these one-of-a-kind moments. But it's not all compelling sports stories - there's plenty of human interest fun, too. I'm still laughing at the Jack Dempsey quote, "Honey, I forgot to duck" after he lost the heavyweight championship fight to Tunney in 1926. I'm definitely adding that to my one-liner repertoire. Thanks guys, for the enjoyable book. ... Read more

Product Description
In the late 1920s, Frenchman Jules Rimet had a grand vision for a global soccer tournament: he named it the World Cup. Just 13 teams contested the inaugural tournament in 1930, and the hosts Uruguay were to emerge as the winners. From these tentative beginnings, the World Cup has grown exponentially into a truly all-embracing international competition, involving some 200 countries and spanning every continent on the planet. It has provided the stage for such soccer legends as Bobby Charlton, Eusebio, Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and the incomparable Pele, and has furnished many soccer fans with their most cherished sporting memories. It is the biggest prize in competitive team sport.

The Treasures of the World Cup tells the story of the quadrennial festival of world soccer. It comprises an authoritative narrative account of each of the 17 tournaments to have taken place to date. The reportage is complemented by features on the superstars and the memorable moments for each of the finals, together with maps of the venues and results boxes. It also contains over 30 facsimile items of rare soccer memorabilia integrated into the pages of the book. The reader can relive the dramatic events that have entranced the watching millions by holding and examining soccer programs, game tickets, posters, stickers, postcards and items of correspondence, which until now have remained filed or exhibited in the National Football Museum in Preston, England, and other private collections around the world. Many of these items are newly researched and previously unpublished. ... Read more

They played in 13 Shell Shield tournaments from 1965-66 to 1980-81, when they won their first title and were subsequently disbanded into Leeward Islands and Windward Islands. Those two teams had first-class status before 1980-81, but competed together in the Shell Shield. The Combined Islands played 54 first-class games, winning 11, drawing 19 and losing 24. 52 of those games were in the Shell Shield tournament, with the other two games both coming in the 1961-62 season - a Pentangular Tournament preliminary round loss to British Guiana, was followed by a home defeat to the touring Indian side that same season. From then on, the team only existed as an entity for the Shell Shield, with the British Leeward Islands and British Windward Islands fielding independent teams against touring squads, and also playing first-class matches between each other. Excerpt: Australian rules football in Asia describes the sport of Australian rules football as it is watched and played in the Asia region. Australian rules football has been played as an organised sport in Asia since the late 1980s, with the foundation of teams in Japan based around universities in Tokyo. Before this time, only informal matches had been played in some countries, the majority involving Australian servicemen. Since the 1980s a number of clubs have been formed in east Asia, mainly by expatriate Australians, although in Japan, Indonesia, China, Pakistan and India the majority of the playing base is nationals. There is no official governing body as such, although an informal association named the Asian AFL has existed between clubs for some time, with discussion currently underway to formalise a regional body. Previous to 2008, the only Asian league with sufficient local player numbers and organisational structure to have attended the Australian Football International Cup was Japan, although with the aid of partnerships also involving the AFL, Australian Football in India and China became rapidly organised in 2007 resulting in their debuts in the 2008 Australian Football International Cup. Currently the sport in Asia is broadcast only on satellite television through the Australia Network. Presently only Australian Football League matches are shown, particularly the AFL Grand Final. The main tournament and cup competition is between Australian expat-based clubs is the annual Asian Australian Football Championships. Product Description
For The Glory is the true story of Babe Slater and Rudy Scholz, opposites in many ways, who starred in the US Olympic rugby teams that shocked the world by winning gold medals at the Antwerp Games of 1920 and the Paris Games of 1924. It required nerve for quiet farmer Babe to return to Belgium just two years after witnessing the horrors of World War One there. Rudy had been desperate to play a part in that war but had missed out on the action. There was more frustration for little Scholz, by now a silver-tongued lawyer, when gentle giant Slater was elected 1924 US rugby captain ahead of him. Rudy didn't even want to play in the Paris showdown against the French favourites at the so-calledChariots of Fire' games. What happened to bring Rudy back into line just before the French turned the 1924 Olympic final into a bloody riot? How did Scholz cope when he was finally confronted by the horrors of war on Okinawa during World War Two, and how did he manage to play rugby until he was 83? Read about the extraordinary experiences of Rudy and Babe, then decide for yourself where the glory lies in sport or war. Mark Ryan is a writer and sports journalist. His books include Justine Henin: From Tragedy to Triumph and Fabio Capello: The Man, The Dream, The Inside Story, both published by JR Books, as well as The Hornet's Sting: The Amazing Untold Story of Second World War Spy Thomas Sneum. ... Excerpt: The Australian Championships in Athletics or Australian Open Track and Field Championships are held annually to determine Australia's champion athletes in a range of Track and Field events. The championships are the primary qualification trial for athletes wishing to compete at the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games or World Championships. The event is conducted by Athletics Australia. The championships were first held in 1890 under the name Inter Colonial Meet. The competition was staged at Moore Park in Sydney on May 31, 1890. Teams from the Australasian colonies of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand competed in the first meeting. A New Zealand team continued to compete in this event until the 1927/28 event. At the next championships in 1929/30, women's events were included for the first time. In 1933, the women began conducting their own championships, with a wider range of events. Except for occasional combined championships in 1936, 1972 and 1976, the separation of men's and women's championships continued until the 1977/78 event. The full range of Olympic events is not usually conducted at the National Championships. During the 2007/08 season the following championship events were held separately: The most successful athletes at the Championships have been throwers Gael Martin and Warwick Selvey who won 20 and 19 championships events...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=15180688 ...
