5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
This cookbook is outstanding..easy to follow, yummy meals and so helpful!!! I wish they had another one out!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks nice.
I had good hopes for this book, it was the first allergy cook book that I've bought. None of the recipes I've tried have worked too well. And of course there are very expensive ingredients. It does have a handy section of substitutions and flour blends, lots of good information too. But overall I haven't used this book much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.
I bought this book as a gift for my sister who's child has MAJOR allergies and she seems to just love it- I was a little disappointed with what it said for substitutions though- it was all stuff she already knew! But she still likes it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
This book suggests how to successfully substitute products according to your specific allergies. The recipes in the book are easy and delicious, but the information in the book on what to substitute when really opens the doors to making your old favorite recipes allergy free. This book really covered it all for me.I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic help in and out of the kitchen
Recipes, like any good book or cd, should be passed on to friends. Well, every dish I've made so far from this book I have had to share! The recipes are fantastic (the banana honey cake is ridiculously good) and very simple to follow according to the specific allergy. The book begins with helpful advice on the basic lifestyle changes needed to cope with food allergies -from cooking at home, to dining out, traveling and visiting friends. Substitute ingredients are clearly explained and I have learned a great deal in such a short time. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in cooking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect!!!
This book gave my son his youth back. What kids doesn't like to lick the spatula after mom makes cookies. When I got this book I immediately started baking. I have make 4 things so far and they are all perfect. I just finished making the cho.chip cookies and you cannot tell them apart from regular cho.chip. I can't thank Kelly Rudnicki enough for having the time to experiment and come up with the right "chemistry" for simple baking. You are my Hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful food allergy baking book
Since I purchased "the Food Allergy Mama's Baking Book" it has become so much easier to prepare wonderful goodies for our family members with food allergies. All of Kelly Rudnicki's recipes are dairy, egg and nut free, and are so delicious that everyone in the entire family enjoys them. I have recommended it to all my family members and friends who have asked for safe recipes. Worth every penny!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my son's life
I purchased this book 6 months ago & wanted to wait until we made several items before writing a review. I've purchased other books that have ended up with one decent recipe & didn't want to make the same mistake. My son (almost 3) & I have made all but a few items & we LOVED every one! This has been life changing for my son with severe dairy, egg, & nut allergies. Not only have we been able to bake with everyday items but it has made my toddler less picky since he is able to help me "make Philip's food". We even started making items to bring to family gatherings which get wonderful reviews & give my son a huge sense of pride showing off what he made! Love love love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best!
This is absolutely the best tool I have found to combat my recent egg allergy. I have been at a loss as to how to bake anything yummy without eggs. I emailed Kelly because I am only allergic to eggs not all things dairy and wondered if I could use cows milk and butter in the recipes. Not only did I get a response but I got it the same day I sent the email. Was told that the recipes could definitely be modified with both but recommended margarine instead of butter. Have tried the lemon cake and zucchini bread up to this point and absolutely love them both. The cake is the moistest homemade cake I have ever made with or without eggs! 5 Stars in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and good
I love this book!I purchased this book and the Allergen-free Baker's handbook but I ended up keeping this one and returning the other one. This book gives you natural ingredients (baking soda, buttermilk, etc) to substitute the egg unlike the other one that tells you to purchase the Ener-G egg replacer.
Best of all, the recipes are really good. You can't even tell that they don't have any eggs in them. I made the chocolate chip cookie first and my mother-in-law asked me if I bought them. That's how good they were.
Also, some of the recipes calls for rice flour, but since my daughter can have the regular flour, I used it instead and it still turned out good. The other book (Allergen-free Baker's handbook) specifically says that you can't substitute ingredients...well, not in this book.

I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful
My son has complicated, chronic health issues which greatly restrict what he can and can not eat. This cookbook, which we bought after maxing out our renewals of our local library's copy, has given us several recipes that we have adapted to his diet. And the whole family enjoys the result!

This was a huge help to us.We'd love to make some contributions if another edition were to ever come out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
Got this because my husband and daughter both have milk allergy and wheat allergy. This is great to search by food you want to eliminate and easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars By far the best
I have read many allergy cookbooks in the past. This is the easiest and best one I have found. It uses ingredients I have actually heard of.I gave my copy to a friend and found I couldn't live without it, so I bought another one!

4-0 out of 5 stars handy reference
This was one of the first allergy cookbooks that we bought when we found we were faced with mutliple severe food allergies.

Long on baked goods - short on meals, but still a handy reference, and uses easily accessible ingredients. No pink elephants on the ingredient list. All sorts of cookies, cakes, muffins, bars, desserts, pancakes etc.

Easy to read and easy to make recipes.

We have tried many recipes from this one. My daughter's favorite dessert is the swirl cake that we make based on the recipe of this book. That is enough of a positive review for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks variety
I was looking for a real cookbook with a VARIETY of ideas including NEW meal ideas. The back of the book states "A full range of menu ideas . . ."Not true.Of the 300 recipes in the book, about 250 are for cookies, cakes, pies, sweet breads, muffins and other dessert type items. There are only 50 recipes in the "Main Meals" chapter and it looks like they were stretching to fill the chapter.About 10 of the recipes in "Main Meals" are made of potatoes such as "Potato Fans": slice a potato, sprinkle with salt and bake. Wow. I can barely contain myself.Four of the recipes were for more breads like corn bread and then the all-to-creative Chicken & Rice and Pizza --which is what I'm trying to get away from. I wanted was some NEW creative ideas for meals or side dishes. I will keep looking for a better book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough book with tons of variations
My favorite part of this book, besides the complete explanation of food allergies at the beginning, is how varied the recipes are. A complete chapter of 'mixes' and substitutions for every type of allergy means that you can change each recipe to fit your particular allergy. If you're allergic to wheat, for instance, there are several mixes in that chapter you can use to substitute for flour. If you're allergic to eggs, there are a couple of egg substitutes you can make to use for eggs in recipes that call for them.

And the recipes are really good. There's nothing too fancy or difficult to make. I really love this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not all recipes exclude all of the allergens!
I bought this book because it listed all of the allergens that I need to avoid for my 2 year old daughter. When the book arrived, only a small percent of the recipes exclude all of the allergens listed. It was very dissappointing and I am still looking for a cookbook that excludes all of these things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to find recipes
My favorite part of this book is that at the top of each recipe there are icons that tell you what it is free of.My second favorite part is that there are recipes for substitutes...like egg substitutes.Great book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for anyone suffering from food intolerance.
I have suffered for months from food intolerance, including MSG-related problems. Numerous doctors could not make the connection, so I had to educate myself through reading. Dr. Walsh's book has been a Godsend. It isextremely helpful and is presented in a positive way.

5-0 out of 5 stars His patients rave about how he has changed their lives!
I work with Dr. Walsh and when I first did a preceptorship with him I was given his book to read. After first reading the book I thought the ideas seemed extreme, but I am not an allergy sufferer nor do I suffer from anysort of migraines.I then began to visit with a few patients who have takenthis book to heart and are praising Dr. Walsh for his medical expertise. Their quality of life has changed, maybe yours will too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that will impact the quality of life of many people.
A book that will impact the life of many individuals. Many people today gothrough everyday thinking the headaches and many other symptoms are merelyassociated to stress. This book provides many practical causes of theday-to-day symptoms of food allergiesmany of us suffer from. I had neverthought much about sweetners and had mearly heard rumors about MSG and theimpacts it can cause some people.

Also, when one mentions diet, I thinkabout scrimping to find something to suppliment the diet for lack ofchoices. Dr. Walsh provides not only causes but also solutions/alternativesto food sources that will not cause or at least diminish thesesymptoms.

In keeping things short I would encourage this book not only toindividuals that know they have food allergies but also to those thatsuffer from many of the symptoms like headaches amd nausea who are probablylike me and never thought the foodeaten may be the source of theproblem.

Wonderful book and easy to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Dog-earred Standby
I bought this book many years ago when it was called Five Years Without Food.My children suffer from multiple food sensitivities and environmental illness. Tthis book has been invaluable for maintaining an interesting rotation diet.It is not meant for folks who have just a few food allergies or are only gluten/casein free--you will probably disappointed. If you need to keep your foods separate without introducing too many ingredients into a recipe, this is a wonderfully helpful book.I have almost exclusively used this book for our grain baking and dessert needs. This book has also helped me understand how to come up with my own recipes by substituting foods that we can eat, for some that we can't.These recipes are flexible and can be customized as needed. And yes, we have Kangaroo on our diet out of necessity, also Camel.

5-0 out of 5 stars I use this book all the time for breads/grains/pancakes
I have looked all over for allergy cookbooks without much success except for Nicolette Dumke's books.I use this book all the time for baking/breads/desserts.

My seven year old daughter has multiple food allergies but gets shots that allow her to eat a core set of foods. However, there are still many foods that she can't eat.She actually can't eat many of the alternative foods used in the book, but can eat enough grains that I can use this book to give her some baked goods without yeast, baking powder, or eggs. The recipes are easy to modify slightly to fit other needs even for those of us who don't consider ourselves "good" cooks.I make the pancake and muffin recipes often and use the pancakes for "sandwich" bread since they are so much less crumbly than other non-yeast breads. We even tried a modified version of the almost-normal German Chocolate Cake, which she liked quite a lot. I put chopped peaches in the barley muffins (made with butter because we can't use oils) and they taste a lot like peach cobbler.Yum.Even her classmates like these muffins. If you are hungry for something made with grains, this book has recipes that work!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resources for Complex Food Allergies
This book includes great information about the diagnosis and treatment of complex food allergies, as well as a wide variety of recipes for special diets. One of the features that I like best is that the recipes include a wide variety of substitution options so that you may individualize the recipe to your unique food restrictions. This book met the need I had to adapt my daughter's allergic food restrictions to her decision to become a vegetarian. After reviewing this most recent of Nickie's books, combined with her older ones, I was able to develop enough new recipe ideas to help my daughter comply with her increased diet restrictions. The new recipes added much desired variety and they tasted great. Two of the most fun surprises in this book included cranberry sauce on page 126 (which I chose to sweeten with date sugar) and kiwi sorbet on 201 (which I chose to sweeten with stevia).

5-0 out of 5 stars beats all other allergy cookbooks, hands down
For people with many severe allergies to foods, this is the most comprehensive, best-organized cookbook I have found. It is clearly written, well-researched and informative without resorting to hype, and the recipes clearly have been kitchen-tested.The drawbacks of some recipes are noted (e.g., some alternative grain recipes are more crumbly or dense than recipes using wheat flour).Sources for unusual foods are listed; and the internet provides a great marketpalce for finding the rest.I found it easy to adapt the basic rotation diet to fit the foods I can tolerate best and purchase locally and online.

The author has done us a great favor by turning her many trials with allergies into a treasure-trove for the rest of us in the same boat. She not only groups foods by phylogenetic families to alert to possible cross-reactivity, but also mentions the newer, emerging findings on pollen-food interactions due to non-genetic similarity of protein forms.Best of all, instead of leaving the reader feeling hopeless in the face of so many potential cross-reactions, she outlines a workable way to cope.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of resources and info
My young daughter has food allergies, so I ordered this book specifically for help with the rotation diet. This is the only book I could even find WITH a rotation diet and it has lots of good ideas for people who suffer from food allergies. I do recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheesy but clear and informative
I got this book from the library, and have found it very useful in planning the common foods elimination diet I am going to do for myself and my daughter. The illustrations are very cheesy, but this book is informative, easy to read, and gives hope that you can actually DO the protocol. The pictorial lists of foods that you can eat and foods you must avoid on the elimination diet make them easy to remember, and I think this book will make it easy for my daughter's baby sitter to implement the diet during her trial. You should definitely read this book if you suspect food allergies for yourself or your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Allergy Resource
I have finally found an easy to follow guide to eating for people with several food allergies/sensitivities.I really enjoy having this book.I pick it up just about everyday since buying it to try new recipes. GREAT COOK BOOK!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars A diverse cook book.
A cookbook with diverse recipes. A good buy for a household with different allergies. I've had to tweak some recipes(for taste purposes)that is why I gave this 3 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Choice
I have truly enjoyed the meals from this cookbook. The recipes are simple, but tasty. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple allergy conscious cookbook where the recipes are not so extensive that they took a long time to cook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Allergy free
Unfortunately for the author, she clearly does not know what "allergy free" means. This book claims to be "free of All common food allergens" on the cover, yet most of the recipes contain nuts and eggs. If you have Celiac disease, this may work for you, but if you are dealing with life threatening allergies that require you to be "Allergy free" due to the more common allergens, nuts, peanuts, eggs, wheat, etc....don't waste your money. I would be fearful to keep this in my home in case my nanny accidentally makes a recipe from it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Parts of this book may be useful for people who are new to food allergies/intolerances and need basic info on rotation diets and food families. But it is exasperating and unhelpful if you have sensitivities to many foods.

There are not many recipes here that I can use; I'm better off searching google for food ideas. Most of the "grain-free" recipes actually call for alternative grains like quinoa which, while not in the cereal grain family, can still spell trouble for some people who react to grains and other starchy foods. Buckwheat may be more closely related to rhubarb than to oats and wheat, but it causes the same kind of reaction in me.

Also, she claims that rice is the easiest grain to digest and hardly anyone reacts badly to it. This is not true. ANY food that you rely on as a staple can potentially upset your system...especially when it comes to grains, which are relatively new to the human diet. I have a mild rice intolerance, and I know I'm not alone. If, like me, you react badly to almost all grains, you will be irritated to find that there is A WHOLE CHAPTER devoted to RICE and pasta dishes.

The hefty rice section will be useless to many readers, and it really strikes me as odd that the author would spend so much time on a single food--and a cereal grain, no less--after extolling the virtues of rotary diet plans. The pasta dishes are slightly more useful; they require vegetables or alternative grains in place of wheat pasta, but almost all the sauces make use of nightshades, so us multiple allergy sufferers are still S-O-L.

There are a few good ideas in here if you don't mind sifting through pages of depressing grain-laden dishes, but the whole thing comes off as being rather naive. ... Read more

Product Description

Most people take eating for granted - but for some, eating can be downright dangerous. Thirty thousand Americans are hospitalized each year due to an allergic food reaction and peanut allergies in American children doubled from 1997 to 2002. Between two and ten percent of children are affected by food allergies worldwide and adverse food reactions increased hospital admissions by five hundred percent in the United Kingdom during the past two decades.Asthma cases, a reliable indicator of food allergy susceptibility, increased one hundred percent during the last thirty years. While most people assume they have a food allergy, only a very small percentage of cases are a true food allergy. For reasons still unknown, the human immune system reacts abnormally to certain foods. However, medical disorders, increased globalization of the food supply, and an upsurge of processed and convenience foods that contain food additives may also cause adverse food reactions as well.Accurate diagnosis can be extremely tricky and many sufferers never learn what causes their symptoms.

Why are adverse food reactions on the rise? How can an accurate diagnosis be made?Is it even possible to enjoy foods and stay safe and healthy? These are just some of the questions this book will answer while helping the reader to learn all they can about why adverse food reactions happen, distinguish between a true food allergy and a food hypersensitivity, and outline strategies to successfully manage and live with them.

This was not made to be a 5 star cookbook, just a basic no picture grouping of quick easy recipes. Yes a couple suck, but won't all cookbooks have a couple of them?

1-0 out of 5 stars it only got one star because you must click at least one star
Don't buy this book. Here...let me save you the time and money and energy. Take any "kid friendly" recipe you want and make the substitutions as follows:
for egg...use an egg substitute
for milk...use a milk substitute
for wheat...use a wheat substitute
for butter...use margarine
for a nut allergy...don't use nuts
to make it low in sugar...use less sugar
to make it gluten free...don't use gluten
There. I just saved you $15. These are by far the most absurd recipes and substitution I have ever seen in my life. Oh and the taste...YUK...even without the substitutions.
There is nothing that teaches one how to make these substitutions...for example
for egg...use banana, applesauce, pumpkin, baking soda & vinegar, ground flaxseeds & water to name a few.
for milk...there are nut milks, oat milk, hemp milk, rice milk, and soy milk use as a one to one (rice and almond milks tend to be a little more liquidy so you may want to cut back)
for wheat...well...there are quite a few recipes online ranging from quinoa, rice, soy, oat flours...it is trial and error depending on what you need and what you like and what you are using it for...a blend is better then just one.
for butter...most of the time you can use margarine but I prefer flax seed oil some prefer coconut oil
low in sugar...I use fruit purees...some people like using alternative sugars (honey, barley malt) some use apple juice concentrate.
Look at that...less then one page and already more informative then that whole book.
seriously...don't buy this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not dairy free
Probably a good cookbook if you need to be wheat or gluten free, but otherwise, forget it.The cover is very misleading as almost all recipes include dairy or eggs or both, and the suggested substitute for any cheese is a soy imitation.I think if they just removed the list of the supposedly allergy-free items from the cover, then one wouldn't be so surprised and disappointed, as many allergy cookbooks are not for all allergies.

1-0 out of 5 stars misleading - not allergen-free
I checked this book out from the library before purchasing and was very glad that I did not waste my money. For a similar value, just pick up any standard cookbook and omit your allergens when cooking. (Allergic to gluten? Simply use GF flour. Allergic to eggs? Leave them out. Allergic to dairy? Use soy. Allergic to soy? Well, you're on your own with that one. Hmmm... maybe just... leave that out too?)

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money. . .these recipes are poor quality!
I bought this book when my son was first diagnosed with an egg and nut allergy.First of all, if your child has these allergies and no others, don't even bother because the substitutions are just like "omit nuts" or "use ener-g egg replacer".Really? That's not too creative, folks.I don't need a special cookbook for that. And am I really going to make a quiche with egg replacer? These recipes are more geared toward eliminating gluten, and the other allergies are more of an afterthought.

The other thing I have noticed about these recipes is that the instructions are poorly written.Unless you are an experienced cook/ baker and can figure out things like you need to mix the dry ingredients separately or that granola bars without salt are going to taste disgusting, you are going to end up with some flops.I can say that every recipe of the 5 or 6 I have made from this book has left me disappointed, and many of the recipes I can just look at and tell they are not going to be good.Where was the editor and the test kitchen on these- seriously! How can one write a cookbook without testing the recipes extensively- Betty Crocker would be ashamed. You will be much better off with some recipes from the blogosphere, such as food allergy mama and the gluten free goddess. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars one of my top 3 choices for allergy cookbook
The only reason I didn't rate it with 5 stars is because I do like the "Sophie Safe Cooking" a little bit better. However, this and it's prequel ("What's to Eat?) are both very good for moms who are new to allergen-free cooking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Cooking Resource
I'm having to adjust my diet to accomodate for dairy/egg allergies.I love to cook but most of my recipes used at least one of these. Have found some great additions for entrees to replace stuff I can't eat anymore.I haven't had good results with her baking recipes (I've tried a couple) but the book was worth it for providing good menu additions for entrees and sides.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST HAVE Cookbook!
Whether you have a food allergy or not, you MUST get this cookbook.I'm a busy working mom who is challenged to quickly put together healthy and tasty homecooked meals for my food-allergic family.Linda's cookbooks have given me the solution. The recipes are easy with clear directions, and they come out great every time.I like that most recipes use everyday ingredients that we usually have on hand, and they are delicious!I also love that these recipes don't taste like "special allergy-safe dishes" that compromise on taste. Not at all! They are just good recipes for yummy dishes, and they happen to be safe for those with these allergies.I have a ton of cookbooks and love to cook... but seriously, I almost always use Linda's recipes, whether I'm cooking for my family, or a potluck, or a dinner party. And people always ask for the recipes.Try the Apricot Glazed Salmon, the Spinach and Apple Salad, the Iced Honey Cookies, the Fudge Filled Banana Muffins...the list goes on and on.Take the stress out of figuring out what to cook...buy this book (and Linda's first one). You will wonder how you ever lived without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for families with these food allergies
This book, as well as her earlier cookbook, is fantastic!!My son has the dairy-egg-peanut allergy & my husband has a dairy allergy.I've never owned a cookbook that I could make every recipe in it & feed it to my family, and I was running out of new meal ideas when I found these books. There are wonderful cake & frosting recipes and recipes for all courses and occaisions. So many new and simple ideas of ways to prepare chicken, potatoes, rice, desserts and more!!If you have these food allergies in your house the only question is why don't you have this cookbook??!!I ordered this one along with her earlier one "What's to Eat" and I tell you, not one recipe is repeated.Order them both - you won't be disappointed!!

5-0 out of 5 stars our family loves this book

2-0 out of 5 stars Book review
The book was written in 1985. Some of the information is inaccurate as far as the allergy testing methods. I feel Food Allergies for Dummies is a more accurate reference and it is up to date. My allergist said that Food Allergies for Dummies was a very good reference for people dealing with this issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been referring to this book for 10 years
I bought this book about 10 years ago when the hospital wouldn't take my blood donation for my grandfather. They said I was too low in iron.I had been EXTREMELY tired drinking mounds of coffee to stay alert at work. This book solved my problem. My wife also has severe exercised induced anaphylactic shock - 4 doctors and allergists couldn't help and she was told to never exercise again. This book solved that problem and she still runs marathons.Between the index and the vitamin and mineral charts, I refer to this book every time I have a health question. My book is now torn in two with underlined and worn pages.I'll never give it up.A MUST HAVE for anyone interested in health and nutrition, and virtually any health problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Correct the vague symptoms that your doctor hasn't helped
With the huge number of additives, preservatives, herbicides, pesticides and other cides present in our foods, it's no wonder we are getting fatter and sicker and not losing weight on yo yo diets. Dr. B's book helped me lose weight and quit asthma medicines and my doctor couldn't/did't help. Ifyou have vague symptoms that don't get better, you might consider foodintolerances & read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have home reference for any family or individual!
I found Dr. Braly's Food Allergy & Nutrition Revolution to be both insightful and a benefit to our household. As parents of four (#5 is due in 3 weeks), my wife and I regularly refer to Dr. Braly's book for itsin-depth information, research, treatment and protocols for a multitude ofhealth conditions.A few years after reading Dr. Braly's book, I finallymet him at a health conference and was fascinated by the wealth ofinformation and experience he has.Recently Dr. Braly informed me he hastwo new health guides coming out through Keats Publishing and I willdefinitely be purchasing both of them. Please feel free to contact meregarding my opinion on Dr. Braly, his book or even on how to contact him.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is life changing information for the chronically ill.
As a medical student, I must read many books on disease states and the therapies for them. The initial event that creates an environment for many disease states is commonly a breakdown of the body's natural ability tomaintain health (i.e. immune system deficiencies).Dr. Braly's book offersexcellent information that explains how your body should work, why itdoesn't, and what you can do to make it work properly just by modifyingyour diet.I have worked with a physician who has been in practice forthirty years that became interested in Dr. Braly's book after his wife'smedical problems had failed to resolve by traditional and expensivemedicals treatments. After diet modification, there was drasticimprovement in her health and soonafter, her quality of life.Thisprompted the physician to treat his own patients with Dr. Braly's dietmodification plan.Today, the vast majority of his patients are thosebeing successfully treated for food allergies and have spent thousands ontraditional medical therapies with previous doctors that have had less thanbeneficial results.I must highly recommend this book to anyone sufferingfrom fibromyalgia, JRA, chronic headaches, intestinal problems, or otherillnesses that have not responded to traditional medicine. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars What a joke! Don't waste your money.
Unless you are quite literally dying, you will get nothing of value from this book so don't waste your money.

To follow the diet probably would cost you more than you earn, if you were even able to find the ingredients. Then, you would need to hire a full-time chef to prepare the ridiculous meals of yucky foods and take time off from work to deal with the effects of eating the food.

If, however, you are suffering horribly and no doctor can tell you what to do about what is killing you, THEN perhaps try this book as a last resort.

4-0 out of 5 stars probably the best of it's kind
While I didn't follow the diet, this is the only book I've found that really has some good combined allergy recipes. There are still a few foods that can cause problems in some of their recipes (eg.tomato, barley) but it still seems like the best I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Discovering Your Allergies or Trying New Foods
"Quite often when you feel stressed, you should think about your diet rather than look for the things in your life that cause you stress." ~ pg. 12

You may already have a pretty good idea of what you are allergic to and this book will help to pinpoint additional allergies if you are still having specific symptoms. By eliminating most palm oils, peanuts and nuts from your diet, you may solve many problems. Soy butter and soy nuts are just as delicious.

The list of symptoms that indicate a food intolerance is a long one and you are sure to find a symptom here that could include frequent headaches, fatigue or insomnia. A short discussion about environmental causes for allergies is discussed - chemicals used in household cleaning can be significant in skin allergies. Switching to some of the Seventh Generation products can help or try Mrs. Meyers cleaning products.

Helpful suggestions include:

Soaking rice in mineral water to enliven the grains
Spouting your own beans, grains and seeds for salads
Purchasing oil in glass bottles
Using kelp as a substitute for salt

The authors introduce foods like umeboshi plums, kamut, quinoa and tamari. You may recognize many of the healthy foods presented and then enjoy using them in the recipes.

Amaranth and Apple Pancakes - uses sheep's milk and amaranth flour
Miso Soup - seaweed and miso soy bean paste
Roast Chicken with Plum Stuffing
Seafood Paella
Aduki bean burgers
Millet Croquettes
Redcurrant Sauce
Barley Scone Bread
Date and Coconut Muesli Bars
Cherry and Coconut Slices
Chocolate Hazelnut Biscuits
Fig and Lime Sorbet
Lemon and Elderberry Cordial
Mushroom and Tahini Spread

From my perspective, the recipes in this book would add to my diet and help me include more foods than eliminate foods. So, this book can be seen from two different perspectives. I don't see any deprivation in sight...this looks like a celebration of new foods and eclectic recipes to try as soon as you can make a trip to the health food section of your local store.

"The majority of people with allergies or food intolerances react to less than five items, of which the most common are tap water, dairy products, wheat, and other cereals that contain substances similar to gluten..." ~pg. 34

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I really like this book.It helps with preparing foods for the sensitive children in your life.It does say soy milk so we replace that with either raw cows milk or goat milk.I'm very thankful someone took their time to make this book for those of us searching!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent kid-friendly cookbook
My 4 year old son has had diagnosed food allergies since he was 8 months old. It's been hard to find a great cookbook that has good, kid-friendly recipes along with ones that taste good for the whole family and are easy to make. This book is filled with great, common place recipes like cookies, cupcakes, muffins, corndogs, fun snacks, etc...Out of all the books I've used (and there have been many!) this is by far the best one I've purchased!

5-0 out of 5 stars Refer to this cookbook often
Reviewed by Tammy Petty Conrad for Reader Views (4/07)

The cover shouts that this will be a fun cookbook to use, as well as a practical one. Imagine the families who have children with allergies or special dietary needs. It must be frustrating to try to adapt recipes for every meal on a regular basis. The authors of this book have done all the work for those parents. At the same time, they've created a book that anyone with kids will enjoy cooking with.

The authors start with a little background about how many suffer from food allergies and the type of symptoms which can occur. For us lucky parents who don't have to deal with this, it is eye-opening to consider how careful other parents have to be with every single thing that goes into their children's mouths. The authors are experienced chefs and educators who are adept at sharing information without boring their readers. This book is not just about recipes, but nutrition as well, including appropriate substitutions for each possible culprit in the pantry.

Recipes are included for every meal as well as snacks, desserts and drinks. Through a combination of pictures, each recipe notes what substitutes can be made for potential allergens like dairy, gluten and eggs. A complete nutritional guide is also included. My son was eager to try the corn dogs, his favorite menu choice at the fine dining establishments we frequent. The recipes are printed in an easy-to-read format so children can use it as well as adults. This was my first attempt at making corn dogs however, and I found it difficult to wrap the hot dog pieces in the dough. It could be that my cornmeal was not ground fine enough. They tasted good even if they weren't restaurant quality!

Our next attempt was the Sticky Cinnamon Buns which required the Biscuit Dough recipe too. While I wouldn't attempt this on a weekday morning, I didn't mind rolling out the dough on a lazy Saturday afternoon for my Sunday breakfast. Next we'd like to try Pizza Soup and Pancake Paint. You'll have to buy the book if you want to know what to do with the paint!

Todd Adelman and Jodi Behrend also included an extensive resource list in the back for parents to look up more information for their children's issues. I would recommend "Special Foods for Special Kids" to anyone with children or food allergies. You never know when you might have one of your children's friends over who is allergic to gluten. Or you have to take cupcakes to school and you can't include peanuts. Keep this cookbook handy and refer to it often. Remember there is always something cooking in the kitchen, but it doesn't have to make your children sick.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy & practical cookbook
My son is allergic to dairy, peanuts, eggs, wheat and gluten - I love this cookbook because it recognizes that different kids have different allergies. If the recipe calls for eggs and you need to use egg replacer, it tells you what you need to do to make the recipe work with the egg replacer (like mixing it with rice or soy milk for one recipe, adding some club soda in another).I have enjoyed making typical kid foods, like mac-n-cheese, that are safe for my son and taste good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
While this book is not exactly what I was looking for because my child is on a rotary/rotation diet, it's a good resource for parents with children allergic or sensitive to wheat and/or gluten, milk and/or eggs. There are substitutions given for each of these as needed for every recipe, conveniently located on the same page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book
This is a great book; I've had it for years and recently re-read it.The insights into a parents emotions and feelings are spot-on; this is obviously written by someone who understands emotions in the context of food allergies.Even after living with this problem for 4+ years, I got a lot from rereading this book..

5-0 out of 5 stars great for caregivers
i gave this book to my daughter's daycare. it's a quick read and gives a good overview of food allergies, how to manage food avoidance (with a chapter dedicated daycare/preschool environments), how to recognize a reaction, and how to respond to a reaction. it's concise and to the point, not bogged down with a lot of extraneous stats and info.

5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentEmotional Support
When I found out my son had severe peanut & tree nut allergies my life completely changed. I love the way this book was written. It has provided the support I have been looking for, for the last year. I have ordered more copies for family to read as well. Food allergies change your life, anaphalaxis is something that is hard to talk about, and accept. The author did a great job just giving the reader support, and making me feel like I am not alone....

2-0 out of 5 stars Over Alarming, Somewhat Informative
This book made me anxious and distraught about my daughter's condition with allergies. The author used many dark examples of negative allergic reactions. What an eye opener to all of the things that can happen to your child! However, I felt much of the advice and guidance was lost when the extreme consequences were used for every case example. One of the first chapters did offer some consolence that I was not alone - something that I appreciated reading. It is hard to remember that when you see non-allergic toddlers that can try a bite of any food that they want.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last some real help and straight talk.
Ms. Collins tells us all of the painful, but important journey from discovery, research and finally solution to this most insidious of problems. Her literary manner and style generates confidence and comfort with her conclusions. She finally opened our eyes to some real solutions to a situation, which, until I read her consise, yet complete book, had eluded us for many months. She knows so well those things that are so important to us all and deserves our attention, support and praise. Thank you for everything, Ms Collins.
