Product Description
* A leading international authority on food allergy and intolerance provides invaluable advice for achieving dramatic and long-lasting improvements in your health.* Explains how sensitivity to foods is responsible for many chronic and misdiagnosed ailments such as migraines, sinus problems, and persistent fatigue.* Includes a step-by-step process for identifying food allergies and intolerances and reshaping your diet for better health.

Many people suffer from chronic, unexplained health problems--migraine headaches, poor digestion, recurring sinus symptoms, aching muscles and joints, persistent fatigue--whose causes remain elusive, even to doctors. When conventional tests fail to provide a clear-cut diagnosis, doctors often suggest that these symptoms are due to stress or anxiety, but now Jonathan Brostoff and Linda Gamlin demonstrate that quite often food allergies and food intolerance are the true culprits in these situations.

The authors provide clear explanations of the causes of, as well as the differences between, food allergies and food intolerance and offer numerous case studies on problems all too familiar to many readers. More important, they provide much-needed solutions and treatments for these problems. Along with a wealth of illustrations and charts, Food Allergies and Food Intolerance includes an invaluable step-by-step process for diagnosing food intolerance with a three-stage elimination diet and a system of gradual food reintroduction. A must for anyone who suspects a chronic condition may be linked to dietary sensitivity, Food Allergies and Food Intolerance supplies information that often results in dramatic and long-lasting improvement in people's health and in their lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Food Sensitivities
I'm sensitive to most foods, vitamins & supplements. After becoming sensitive to a drug which I took for 32 years in Jan., I became really sick.Didn't get much help from doctors. At first, I blamed the drug but I now think that my system got all messed up & ended up with chronic fatigue syndrome.Anyway, I can't take medications with the exception to the one I'm taking now & it no longer helps me so I'm weening off it.The immunologist that I saw basically told me that there was nothing wrong with me as he didn't even believe that someone is sensitive to foods or preservatives. This was one medication that helped me somewhat as I was able to eat a few more things but he said in no time I would eat anything I wanted.Well, he was wrong. This started slowly 14 yrs. ago & progressively got worse.I was exhausted but now I'm just tired so that's better. This book was a god send.He suggested taking yogurt with live bacteria & this has helped me tremendously with loose bowels which I've had since January.I was always a fast eater, I now chew my food thoroughly. He also mentioned sometimes people hyperventilate without realizing it so I work on my breathing.I do yoga twice a day & try to remember my breathing throughout the day.I would love to know why this started 14 yrs. ago but, at least, this book is a help.I have not been able to read it all yet as I do have macular degeneration so I can read a little at a time. This is a very good book for people who have problems with food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breaking new medical ground
It's a big step forward: bringing this new under-diagnosed medical problem into the open. This is not"allergy" per se and most docs are unaware of the damage it does to people.

2-0 out of 5 stars Allergy Book
This book was okay for a 2001 publication.I would think it is outdated by now.

3-0 out of 5 stars Misinformation on trace reactions, valuable in other ways
This book has useful information.Especially the section on cross-reactions in food intolerance at the end is completely consistent with my food reactions.I used his info on cross reactions to plan a personal rotation diet that's worked well for me.I haven't developed new food intolerances to any of the foods that I've rotated, meaning that if I eat a food on one day, I don't eat any food that Brostoff thinks will cross-react with it, until four days later.I *have* developed new food intolerances to many foods that I haven't carefully rotated.
But, bad information on trace reactions! He says pretty flatly that people don't have food intolerance reactions to trace amounts.I do, and many other people on forums online have said they do too.For example, when I was finding out about my corn intolerance, I tried to eliminate corn completely for a week. Then I took a kernel of corn, and I sliced it with a razor blade in half, and half again ... then when I got down to 1/16 of a corn kernel, a tiny blob on my fingertip, I ate it ... and I was severely sick for 5 days.I used to feed the squirrels peanut butter, and one time I didn't wash my hands very carefully afterwards and a little peanut butter got under my fingernail, and I nibbled on my fingers and ate it.A little flash of peanut flavor:and I was sick for four days ...
I don't know why he is so sure people don't have non-allergic reactions to traces.Allergists have told me flatly that my kind of food reaction is not an allergic reaction.I get groggy and stuporous and out of it for about four days, sometimes also irritable, back pain, wanting to stuff my face, frequent urination.I've had IgE RAST testing for antibodies to food, and it's been pretty much negative (though not skin testing, which is more sensitive).Maybe it is a kind of allergic reaction where the antibodies don't appear in my blood?I don't know.I react on skin tests to many inhalant allergens, so it would make sense if I had a lot of allergies in my gut too.
I probably have celiac disease.Celiac disease causes other food intolerances, maybe by causing mast cell overgrowth in the gut.The food intolerances may be mast cell reactions, I got that idea from a website called thefooddoc.I don't know for sure I have celiac, but I think so because of a test from Enterolab that showed I had 8-10 times normal of IgA antibodies to gluten and autoimmune TTG antibodies.
So I don't know what Brostoff would make of me.I know my kind of food reactions isn't very rare. Many people describe similar reactions - celiacs, people who have corn "allergies", etc. Yet I have never seen this kind of food reaction mentioned in mainstream medical literature. The best I can figure is that it's probably a side effect of celiac disease and maybe Brostoff is mainly writing about other kinds of food intolerance that are more common and more mild than celiac disease?
I believed him about traces not mattering for a year or two after I quit gluten - he's about the most authoritative specialist in food intolerance - and it badly held up my recovery.I kept on eating fructose made from corn ... and I was woozy-sick for months on end ... Then I quit corn and I found out I had tons of other food intolerances and I was finally able to be healthy.
It was an incredible change for me when I quit gluten and other foods I reacted to ... I felt SO MUCH better ... mentally, emotionally and physically. And tragic that I only found out about it at 43.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the food allegy Bible!
This is a fantastic book if you want to learn about food allergies, immediate and delayed. In fact, my only criticism of the book is that it might be a little too scientific for the average reader. Still, one can skip some of those sections if he or she isn't interested. The sections on creating a food elimination diet are outstanding, with extensive lists of trouble foods, related foods, and substitutes. I particularly like that the author doesn't hype the treatment of food allergies as a miracle cure for everybody's problems and doesn't pimp any specific blood tests. This is rational, unsensational advice. It's not a cookbook, though; you'll have to go elsewhere for that. I did an elimination diet after reading this and have so far found that I am allergic to milk and soy. By avoiding those allergens, I have easily lost 20 lbs (and 2 inches off my waist), I have much more energy, my mood is significantly better, my knees don't continually ache anymore, my food cravings and constant hunger are gone, and my bladder issues have resolved. In short, I feel better than I have ever felt. Although not everyone will see results like this, I think anyone with nagging health problems should give the elimination diet a try, as it can't hurt, and the only real cost is having to cook just about every meal for a few weeks, which I consider a trivial cost compared to the gains I have seen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with Food Allergies
The rendition would be very helpful for any person attempting to deal
with internal inflammation deriving from foods and food allergies.
For instance, there may be a chronic immune response to lactose
i.e. lactose intolerance. Symptoms may include digestive diarrhea,
constipation, bloat and indigestion. Permeability of the
epithelium (gut) may lead to inflammation, combined allergies,
reactions after exercise - all due to eating the forbidden foods.
Anaphylactic reactions may occur in response to eating peanuts,
cow milk, egg, wheat with burning, itch, red skin and vomiting
symptomatology. MSG additives may tighten the face, jaw and chest.
The book is helpful in matching the unwelcome symptoms to the
foods which cause the symptoms to occur. Only when this has been
done, is it possible to eliminate certain types of chronic pain
related to foods that the body rejects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than my allergist
This book provide more information than my allergist bothered to tell me.I highly recommend to read it before you go to your doctor, even if you are just being tested for pollen, etc.I wish I would have found it before all the time and money spent at this particular doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding food allergies
If you or your loved ones have food allergies..Buy this book. You won't be dissapointed. I was not. I use it as a reference in food trials and ingredient reading. It won't stay on the shelf. This is a book you can use over and over again. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars allergies
Very good book on health- my brilliant primary M.D. recommended it.Following this author's diet I lost weight and my stomach is feeling much better. It takes time to get rid of allergies, but I am on the right path.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY - real help for allergies!
I have enjoyed tremendous benefits from Dr. D'Adamo's work!I started to eat under his blood type plans for weight loss but the benefits specific to my other health issues have been AMAZING!I have been an allergy sufferer for 40 years and have not had great results no matter what meds I was given.I am down to one med for asthma and have enjoyed trmemndous results with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars i want to believe it, but...
...i've had some issues with it personally.this theory was introduced to me by a health care provider, and my profile as a blood type a seemed to fit me well.during a recent pregnancy, i was plagued with terrible allergies, and my options were limited in terms of medications.i clung to this book and followed it as best i could.for the first few days my allergies improved, so i tried following it to a tee. suddenly, the allergies came back, and i knew that i was eating something that was making them worse. i gave up and returned to a regular diet.after my pregnancy i was tested for allergies, and in addition to my environmental allergies, i am allergic to soy and peanuts, two of the foods that were "highly beneficial" to me.in addition, i had sensitivities to a plethora of other foods on my "blood type a" food list.i may be unique in experiencing this, so i don't want to throw anyone off if this works for you, i just want to let you know about my experience.good luck to you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Allergies - very helpful input!
While a lot of the material in this book is necessarily duplicated from other books published by D'Adamo in case the reader starts with this book, the real medical assistance offered has been very helpful to me - teaching me to manage my allergies proactively!

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT....I feel so much better!
I cannot believe what a difference this book has made in my life.I did not realize how tired I was until I began following the guidance of this book in avoiding certain foods and including others in my diet.Within a week I was feeling better.I had no idea how tired and sluggish I had been--I have so much more energy now, particularly in the evenings when I was usually tired after coming home from work.I highly recommend that you try this book. It's easy to read and well worth the time and money. ... This book is a God-send....It is simply written and products are readily found. It makes problems with allergies seem an everyday
thing....No more mindless wandering the Supermarkets...This makes
allergy problems disappear.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is one of our go-to cook books
We have many many allergies in our family ... this is one of our go-to cook books. The author provides a lot of information about different flours and possible substitutes. We can't have tomatoes, corn, or coconut on top of all the usual suspects - so have to substitute for those, but with such a wide range of allergies - I don't expect one customized just for our family, unless of course I put one together! I feel this book gives me the know-how on allergen-free cooking. Many thanks to the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Simple Recipes that Impress
We have been using this cookbook over the past week and are really impressed with it.I've made the Falafel with Lemon Tahini Dressing, Lemon & Oregano Chicken and the Lemon Chicken Soup with Rice. All have turned out amazing and what's nice is that the recipes are pretty simple with not a lot of ingredients. I'm sure you will find this cookbook essential if you are interested in healthy eating and don't mind the lack of photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas
Great recipes but wish she would've omitted corn or given corn free or more soy free alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I developed Asthma in my late 40's and just figured out the real cause at age 52 : Allergy to WHEAT !!!!! As soon as I stopped all Wheat products, I could jog again. I am also an MD and find much of Western medicine to be too fraudulent to be taken
seriously.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your time
This book was a waste of my time - it could have been 20 pages long and said everything that was important.I read the book because I was trying to find out what they do to determine your intolerant foods and after reading the book I'm not even sure that the test is valuable.I should have taken other reviewers advice and not read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like this book!

I'm not finished yet with this book, but I like it.I find it to be helpful and it has been hard tofind this information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Hidden Food Allergies are Making you FAT
This book really helped me out with my food intolerance. It focuses a lot on getting the test done and using their test. But I found another place to get it done but this book really helped explain what the test means. I was really pleased to get this book quickly. I refer to it often. I have recommened it to my sisters who also suffer from the same thing. Great Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get tested!
I haven't read this cover-to-cover yet, however I have to say that anyone who has tried multiple diets or lifestyle plans faithfully yet still struggles with their weight should go see an allergist for a complete battery of tests.

Getting tested revealed some insidious allergies for me.I am a 10 year veteran of unexplained elevated liver function tests which completely normalized when I eliminated gluten from my diet.My positive ANA for lupus has also normalized.

In addition, I have lost 65 pounds in 9 months without exercise or restricting my intake amounts. In other words, I still eat real food and drink soda, I just use products that do not contain my allergens. ... Read more

I purchased this book a few years ago because my daughter has food allergies. The recipes are outdated and some are just not worth trying.I've been able to find better ones on the internet for free.Sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good purchase
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because there is another cookbook (Sophie Safe Cooking) that works a little better for my family. It is a good book though and has plenty of decent menu items that the whole family can enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Allergies? This book can help
In reading this book, I learned some things I hadn't known before. For instance, I didn't know a food could affect another food's digestion process.

There are charts provided in the book, which the author has graciously allowed to be copied. These combined with the information in the appendices help to plan menus. Chapter summaries provide a quick reference, too.

Along with personal experience, the author has obviously done her homework, though I would like to have references more directly connected with the text(footnotes, perhaps?).

If you have suffered from food allergies this book's simple, concise read could really help.

5-0 out of 5 stars mtmmog
This book covers the author's struggle with food allergies and presents her years of experience in creating a rotation diet that allowed her to function in a world filled with artificial foods. Before I read this book, I knew that fast food hamburgers had too much fat or that my tapwater had flouride. But this book really opened my eyes to how pervasive food additives really are and how difficult it is to create a diet that eliminates these.

The presentation of ingredients was helpful, since they are the foundation of proper menu building. I also wasn't familiar with the concept of rotation diets until I read this book.

The principles and ideas presented are sound and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had learned this stuff long ago!
This book is excellent for learning how to regain strong health, even if you don't have food allergies!A friend turned me on to it and I was fascinated to read about many little things that impact health that I never thought of before. For instance, different types of salt affect health differently. This book described what kind to look for to replenish your body's mineral supplies.Something else I never thought about is that picky eater kids really do like natural foods as they don't contain chemicals that kids can taste.I appreciated the many insights this book provided! It's truly useful and well thought out.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too basic, too vague, too poorly written
If you know absolutely nothing about wellness, this book might be useful -- but, by 2004, most folks know that fast food isn't as healthy as organic vegetables, much tap water is laden with chemicals, and people can improve their health by changing their diets. This might have been news in 1966, but it isn't news now.

The book not only preaches, it preaches badly:the author's writing begs for editing, as she clearly doesn't have much skill as an author.Clearly, though, the unknown press clearly doesn't have an editor on its staff.

Well-intentioned, but much less useful than most other books on the topic. It is not worth the price of the book to get the pages and pages of record-keeping sheets.

I sent it back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very little value for the price
Good news first:The most valuable section of the book is a list of all foods, organized according to biological classification. This can help identify which foods are risky, based on a person's known food sensitivities. This is a more informative list of this type than I have seen anywhere else.

The bad news is that the main text of the book is lightweight and preachy--going on about macrobiotic principles and avoidance of saturated fats, etc. While these things are worth learning about, they are not what the book advertises to teach. The book is supposed to be a practical guide to creating a rotation diet. All it provides on this topic is a bunch of worksheets to help you visualize your rotation of ingredients, not meals.I was hoping for much more--such as recipe advice, menu planning, and kitchen management under the rigorous and complex rules I must follow to become healthier.

The thing that really got my goat, is that the author states four times that you can hide your dietary problems at social events, by drinking water and expecting other people not to be concerned. This is simply not true.People will notice, and they will ask you, and try to be helpful. Most commonly, people think I'm dieting to lose weight, and start an aggravating conversation about how I'm already thin enough.

Living with food allergies is time-consuming and stressful, and this book just does not help.Furthermore, it makes no attempt to introduce you to the really delicious and satisfying meals that you can prepare, by making modifications to basic recipes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For Every Allergy Parent
This book gives a little of everything and is a terrific reference for any allergy family.
Particularly good information on outgrowing, research, and getting your child settled in school. The recipes are not the best, but everything else is top notch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to info on food allergies
I developed a shrimp allergy when I was in my early 30s, complete with wheezing and hives. Over the next several years, I found that many foods affected me in unusual and uncomfortable ways. What was once just a faint tingle on my tongue when I ate a banana turned into a more significant reaction with many, many more foods than just bananas. I picked up a copy of Food Allergies For Dummies in hopes of finding some answers, and I got many. This book is so full of information for the newly diagnosed or someone trying to determine if food allergies might be an issue. I felt much more prepared when talking to my doctor and could ask informed questions (and understand the answers!) after reading it. Plus, the author suffers from food allergies himself, so he was able to bring first-hand experience to the book as well as plenty of stories from his medical practice -- I definitely felt he was talking *to* me and not *at* me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is or might be allergic to various foods and wants to know more about this issue and the options for treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good starting point
I think this book is a GREAT starting point.I personally DO NOT agree with the previous reviewer on the elimination diet being the gold standard. We have 2 children with multiple food allergies and the elimination diet HAS NOT worked for us due to the number of foods we are dealing with. I think this book is good because it talks about several types of reactions and several types of testing.MOST doctors only recognize IGE blood testing BUT you need more than that and this book explains it fairly well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent starting point
This book is a decent starting point for one who wants to know the basics about delayed food allergies. It's a very quick read with good lists of common allergens and some scientific background on the condition. What I don't like is that the author continuously pushes some controversial blood tests instead of the elimination diet, which is the gold standard (and an inexpensive one at that) for uncovering food allergies. Also, the book isn't very professional looking. It appears to be something that the authors self-published. If you really want to know about food allergies, "Food Allergies and Food Intolerance" is a better option. It covers the subject much more extensively and describes how to do an elimination diet.

I went on an elimination diet after reading this and have so far found that I am allergic to milk, corn, and soy. By avoiding those allergens, I have easily lost 20 lbs (and 2 inches off my waist), I have much more energy, my mood is significantly better, my knees don't continually ache anymore, my food cravings and constant hunger are gone, and my bladder irritation has resolved. In short, I feel better than I have ever felt. Although not everyone will see results like this, I think anyone with nagging chronic health problems should give the elimination diet a try, as it can't hurt, and the only real cost is having to cook just about every meal for a few weeks, which I consider a trivial cost compared to the gains I have seen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars super interesting book!
Great book for anyone who has allergies, digestive problems, asthma or other potential food-sensitivity reactions.

2-0 out of 5 stars slightly lacking
This book was an ok basic overview of food intolerance. It had extensive lists of foods to avoid, symptom lists etc. What it did not have was any scientific evidence to back up various claims. In the intro the author claims a connection between food intolerance and mental illness and claims that it is well known that many people with "celiac disease also suffer from bipolar disorder (schizophrenia)."I have no idea if this is true because there is no citation or reference as to where this info came from. Also, anyone who took psych 101 in college knows that bipolar and schizophrenia are too very different disorders, and while a healthful diet is always best, these illness are not caused by food intolerance but by abnormal brain function that cannot be fixed by a special diet.

While much of the info in this book makes sense (i.e.- don't eat food that makes you feel bad) it does not back up its claims with any sort of research. It also doesn't go into a whole lot of detail about elimination diets, which I thought was odd.Instead it recommends certain tests from specific labs throughout the country, claiming that not all labs could do these tests properly, which doesn't make sense and is a little suspect.I started to wonder if the authors had financial ties to any of the services/ products they recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!
I wish I had this book when I was diagnosed with food intolerances in 2007. It's the most complete information I've found so far! If you have food intolerances and have been struggling to figure out what steps to take in your recovery get this book. Just one negative - the recipes aren't very inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Food Intolerance Bible
The Food Intolerance Bible is an invaluable resource. Like many people, I was a little confused about the difference between food allergies and food intolerances. Many of the books I've read on these subjects use the words interchangeably. I know for a fact that I have some food allergies. As a child, I was thoroughly tested. Sure enough, if I ate enough a small quantity of those foods, my tongue immediately started to swell up and I started to gasp for breath. These early incidents were scary so I learned very quickly to stay well away from these foods.

Food intolerances are slightly different. The effects aren't always immediate or dramatic. Though careful watching of my body's reaction to certain foods, I was pretty sure that there were some foods in my regular diet (namely white flour, refined sugar, and chocolate) that were causing or exasperating problems such as abdominal pain, cramping, and depression. Unfortunately, these symptoms aren't always immediately noticeable so I tend to associate these foods with a feeling of comfort and increased energy.

The Food Intolerance Bible helped me gain an understanding of my body's reactions to certain foods. It also gave me an idea about what other conditions, illnesses, or body reactions could also be causing or adding to my problems. Now, I have a place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for both community library cookbook and health collections.
Nearly everyone has some form of food intolerance, claims "The Food Intolerance Bible: A Nutritionist's Plan to Beat Food Cravings, Fatigue, Mood Swings, Celiac Disease, Headaches, IBS, and Deal with Food Allergies". Food Intolerance occurs when ones body rejects what you put in - and the rejection comes in a huge amount of miserable ailments to make people feel terrible for that day. With seven steps to minimize the occurrence of food intolerance, and over 70 recipes such as Plum Crumble and Black Peppercorns with Sweet Potato fries, Salmon Lasagna, and so much more on top of that, "The Food Intolerance Bible: A Nutritionist's Plan to Beat Food Cravings, Fatigue, Mood Swings, Celiac Disease, Headaches, IBS, and Deal with Food Allergies" is highly recommended for both community library cookbook and health collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the first few chapters!
I bought this several years ago while breastfeeding our eldest who had severe food allergies. The recipes are good - but the beginning sections, where the author talks about recipe substitutions and how various alternatives will work in modifying recipes, is the very best part of this cookbook! When I was overwhelmed parenting a newborn and dealing with her allergies as well, this book saved me time adjusting my diet to make it safe for my daughter without starving myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, Especially for beginners
This book was wonderful for me. I bought it based on the reviews of this book and many other Allergy cookbooks on Amazon and I couldn't be happier. The book is full of information on allergy, intolerance, grains and other foods which I found very helpful. The explanation of the rotary diet and sample menus is also helpful and works great for me. I'm glad someone else already did the leg work.So far every recipe I've tried has exceeded my expectations. All of my other attempts from other allergy recipes were just so-so. Of course no allergy cookbook can completely cover all of your personal allergies, I think this one does a good job of diversity and the author gives substitutions on some of the recipes. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alternative flour education!
This book is an excellent one for baking if your child has an allergy to wheat. My child cannot tolerate kamut and spelt, which the author uses often, but the author almost always gives a list of 4 or 5 different flours that will also work with each recipe. And, she will make note, for example, if more or less liquid is called for if you use a different flour. If an egg is called for, she'll also give you a substitute.Very thorough.I've read a bazillion food allergy cookbooks, and this one by far is the most flexible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Try the crackers!
Part 1 is particularly useful, with well researched chapters on understanding and managing food allergies.People with multiple food allergies will still have to make some substitutions to many of these recipes, but Ms. Gioannini uses healthy ingredients, and has many inspired recipe ideas. My personal favorites are the recipes for Oat Crackers, Buckwheat Thins, and Flour Tortillas, all of which are safe for the majority of food allergy sufferers, and are often hard to find premade in stores. So try the crackers!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good recipes, some "out there" recipes
I like this book, it's a little much in some cases, but generally worth the price. The one problem that I do have with it is that she has recipes that contain spelt and kamut flour. My daughter is allergic to wheat so spelt and kamut are not an option for us.The other issue I have with the book is that I never seem to have all the ingredients in my cupboards that she uses.I'm in a constant battle to keep things at hand with this one. However I do feel that the author has cooked these dishes, and eaten them herself and for the most part they do work.Which is not always the case in the allergy recipe world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Researcher
I found this book (purchased on Amazon) to be both informative and practical.I haven't tried very many recipes yet but the ones that I did were simple enough to follow and not time-consuming.Although I suffer with severe throat swelling and react to almost every food I eat these days, this book has opened a world of new foods to my palate for which I am exceedingly appreciative. One can use this book as a guideline for adapting a whole foods cookbook recipe with appropriate substitutions.I highly recommend it.As an aside, we all need to push Congress to support organic produce and meat sources which retain their vitamin and nutrient content and stop subsidizing and permitting unsafe practices such as antibiotics, hormones, pesticides, and herbicides to be used on our foods. It defeats the purpose of trying to eat healthy when we sabotage ourselves by ingesting toxic chemicals which make us seriously ill. Also, we're stripping our soil of the nutrients it used to have by over farming it which makes the food grown in it that less nutritious to the point where the food is almost just empty calories.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book
I got the book super fast and was in pretty good condition. It is a very good book with a lot of information but I am still doing research to see how accurate it all is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this cookbook
I purchased this cookbook a couple of months ago after being diagnosed as being gluten and casein intolerant and discovering on my own that I have issues with corn too. Too top it off I am also a vegetarian. Finding enough food I can eat has been a challenge. I've tried several of the recipes in this book and have liked most of them and many of them are easy to prepare. A couple of my favorites are the brocolli bisque, carrot bisque and chickpea pizza. I would definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone with food allergies/intolerances. It's been great for me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Best cookbook for the traditional items your are craving
I was very pleased with this cookbook, seeing recipes for things that I have been missing since being sensitive to numerous foods. Very comprehensive & helpful. Each basic recipe (lemon bread, etc) has several alternatives to create a different dish (like adding poppy seeds & making into muffins). The brownies were awesome & so was the pumpkin bread. The "Magical one-bowl muffins" are also great with 20 different variations for savory or sweet. Blueberry pancakes were great too!
I have a grain mill which makes these recipes very easy for me to make. I have whole grains/beans that I grind to make the flour. They have a suggestion for an all-purpose flour mix, which I make a double batch & keep in the freezer. I can whip everything up in a flash. Can you tell I'd been craving breads?
I haven't tried many other recipes yet. I also haven't read the first half of the book, which is information that I am already familiar with.
Another good book is the gluten-free vegan.
This book is HIGHLY recommended! I give it 5 stars, but the option is stuck on 4 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars should have been titled Vegan Food Allergy Survival Guide
Half reference book, half cookbook, there's a lot of great information to be found in this book. However, I wish the title had specified that this is a book designed for those following a vegan diet. For some people on very restricted diets it isn't practical or healthy to follow a vegan diet. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Book has good layout
The book was easier to read than some of the others on the same topic because there was more white space on the pages and larger print. The chapter on preventing food allergies is of little value. She refers to the "hygiene theory" (that says be are basically too clean) and feeding the baby solids too soon being the cause. She seems ignorant of the possibility that the trace amounts of food protein in vaccines (mixed vegetable and animal oils used in the vaccine adjuvant) could be the primary cause of food allergies. The book has chapters on different food allergies and suggestions on coping.

4-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
Dr.Joneja made a very difficult situation easier. As a first time mom my newborn son was having terrible stomach issues from foods I was eating and the proteins in my breast milk. With guidance from the book we were able to identify the problem and work towards solving it.I am very grateful to have found this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
My son, who just turned 1, is actually milk protein intolerant.I am very lucky it isn't a true allergy, but it is still very difficult to deal with. This book made me feel as if I had more of a handle on the situation. It helped me to understand the actual scientific/physiological reasons for allergies/intolerances.While reading this book, it became clear my son has other intolerances/allergies that I have not yet identified (which was my hunch). The information on how allergies manifest and their symptoms and signs was helpful in that it made me know that all these things that I have been noticing are not me being a paranoid mother. It is difficult for doctors to see the whole picture when you take them in on different days for say, irritability, tickly ears, stomach upset, etc. This book helped me to put it all together.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fresh food NOT good for you ?
Indeed in many cases a particular healthy fresh food may be detrimental to your little one.As a nurturing parent you clean, cuddle, and feedyour child. But you sence that there is something wrong.A differential diagnosis to be considered is food allergy.Food allergy and intolerance is more prevalent than you might guess ( 8%).Unfortunately not recognizing it causes the affected child distress.A 15 minute visit with the doctor may prove beneficial. But there is no single reliable lab test that can prove that a child is intolerant to a spreific food or additive.Specialty consultations are in order. And thats where this well written functional book fits in.Comprehensive chapters range through symptoms - detection - diagnosis - prevention - treatment.Celiac disease, autism, eczema, atypical behavior are just a few conditions which are highlighted.Dozens of diets and specific food allergies are detailed in this informative book.Step by step processes are explained by a very well qualified author. She presents methods for analyzing and treating problems, never losing sight of the child's nutritional needs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
This book is ok, though I have found many bits of information that are either outdated or just plain misleading.Like recommending clarified butter for use if you should not have dairy. That may work for a small number of people with minor allergies who happen to get some that is 100% casein free, but it is very unlikely. There was also a doom and gloom attitude about the dangers of a restricted diet while breastfeeding and not a lot of support about sticking with it as being the best thing for your child.Plus outdated information on recommended breastfeeding guidelines and a lack of practical advice for living with food allergies and the emotional aspect of sticking to it made this book not worth owning, IMO.There are much better out there. So use common sense and research more in this book before you follow the recommendations. ...
