4-0 out of 5 stars good if short
I was not sure about these Storey County pamphlets, since they obviously enjoy a high profit margin despite their lower cost. But I haven't been able to reproduce this information on clay soils after looking in several longer texts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Duh!
Don't waste even the $4 for this pamphlet unless you are a complete idiot. Let's see - the best way to deal with clay soil is to cover it with over a foot of good quality top soil (at major expense). Gee - I never would have thought of that! I'm surprised that moving to an area with better soil wasn't a suggestion as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Gardening in Clay Soil
This small, easy to read pamphlet lays out the exact how to's and what not to do working with clay soil. Clay soil can be so frustrating to work with but with the help of this book I feel that I can be much more successful in improving my soil thereby enjoying greater success in my gardening. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best of the series.
I am completely delighted with "The Little Guides" series. The format is extremely user friendly, and each guide is packed with useful and interesting information. I enjoy reading them, but my 6 year old daughter gives them the most use. While the guides are written at an adult level, there is plenty that she can read and understand. I currently own "Sharks," "Birds," "Mammals," "Space," "Whales," and "Flowers."

"Flowers" has five parts: 1) Learning about your landscape, 2) Flowering annuals and biennials, 3) Flowering bulbs, 4) Flowering perennials, and 5) Flowering trees, shrubs, and vines. While there is plenty that younger children can learn from this guide, it is definitely targeted towards a more mature audience. In general, this is more of a "how to" guide than the others. There is also less in the way of photographs and illustrations than in the other guides.

It is still a good general guide to flowers, but comparatively not the best volume in the series. ... Read more

Product Description
In "Some Flowers", first published in 1937, Vita Sackville-West took the step of choosing 25 of her favourite flowers and describing their appearance, origins and characteristics - the best ways to grow them - in a series of expressive pen portraits. The flowers she selects are not those which only have an effect en masse, but those which are lovely in shape, colouring, marking or texture. She describes native British species such as the meadow fritillary, and imports such as the half-hardy annual salpiglossis. Whereas in the original edition of this book black and white photographs did less than justice to both flowers and text, here the watercolours of Graham Rust provided a fuller complement to Vita Sackville-West's descriptions. ... Some Flowers beautifully expresses a passion for working with nature, that is at once very English and very universal. Vita Sackville Wests' love of the unusual and the seemingly ordinary is written in a concise yet tender way. The illustrations mirror the text and each compliments the other to create a truly lovely book, that definantly bears up to repeated reading and may well inspire the gardener to seek out a few specimens of their own! ... Product Description
Hardy geraniums were the first plants to shrug off the rigours of her coastal climate and grow in Birgitte Husted Bendtsen's garden every bit as well as they did in the fertile, sheltered plots further east in Denmark. Add to this their tolerance of dogs and children, resistance to pests and diseases, interesting foliage, and delightful flowers in a wide range of colours, and it is little surprise that Birgitte developed an insatiable passion for them. In this book, she shares her knowledge of cultivating the plants and highlights the most garden worthy species and varieties. Expert cultivation advice, including comments on soil preferences and hardiness, is followed by fascinating information on pollination, and failsafe propagation secrets. Captivating colour photographs display key characteristics of hardy geraniums including their legendary range of flower colour and intricate, often highly marked, foliage. Here readers may marvel at the many cultivars of Geranium x oxonianum, enjoy favorites like Geranium 'Ann Folkard' with its striking black eye against magenta background, and covet the fine-leaved, blue-flowering Geranium himalayense. Smaller varieties ideal for growing in rockeries, containers and troughs are described along with perfect geraniums for associating with roses of all colours. Birgitte Husted Bendtsen communicates like a true enthusiast and the text is peppered with interesting anecdotes including news of an exciting variety that is prized for its blue flowers and modest stature. With over 400 species and hybrids of hardy geraniums and 450 beautiful colour photographs, this book is both rich in information and beautiful to browse. It is a long-awaited reference that will delight seasoned enthusiasts and introduce a whole new generation of gardeners to the charms of the hardy geranium. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb detail...and the photos!
I love gardening!Several years ago I fell in love with hardy geraniums and have, over the years, acquired several varieties without knowing a lot about them.No longer can I say that, thanks to Birgitte Husted Bendtsen's beautiful book published by Timber Press.

Most of the detailed photos are by Ms. Bendtsen herself.Chapters discuss family and genus, cultivation and propagation, specialty uses such as in rock gardens, beneath roses and more. There's a section on bee pollination that includes the most charming photo of two bees curled up in the bowl of a Geranium Gracile bloom.

Chapters discuss the many different types of hardy geraniums and give information on each type.(Did you know that two different hardy geraniums planted close together can have "children"?Did you know that Geranium Sanguineum can be identified as such because it produces a single flower rather than a pair?)I have several clumps of G. Sanguineum in my mountain cottage garden--a gift from a fellow gardener.By comparing a blossom to the twenty varieties shown in the book, I was able to determine that I have "John Elsley."

As another reviewer stated, G. Ann Folkard may not adapt well to a wet and cold climate.I live in a rainy area and can say that this variety does quite well as does G. Brookside. Not mentioned in the book is the extreme hardiness of G. A.T. Johnson.I started ten years ago with one four-inch plant and now have patches of A.T. in every bed.It propagated very well.

Buy this book. It's a wonderful addition to your gardening library.

Absolutely fantastic book! It's beautifully illustrated and very informative. The book arrived quickly and in excellent condition. It's hard to believe it's used and not new.Very helpful in identifying and classifying plants, both by their leaves and by the flowers, especially when the accompanying tag disappears after the plant has sat in the garden for a while!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gardening with Hardy Geraniums
Fabulous book . . . beautiful pictures, good practical advice on growing and maintaining various cultivars of hardy geraniums.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Incredibly informative and a good read too!
In my garden planning, I keep running across stunning and adorable hardy geraniums.I got this book on a lark, and based on previous reviews, to get a little more information such as "will these actually look as nice in MY garden" and "are they as hardy as advertised"... I have read this book cover to cover since I got it a few days ago--the author is outstanding, showing a true passion for gardening and gardening using geraniums. She is entertaining and explains each of the variations/hybrids simply and thoroughly. This is the first gardening book I have read and finally "gotten" the latin names, understanding the characteristics of each of 'these' parents produces offspring having 'those' features.I know that's not a hard concept, but sorting through garden catalogs, garden stores, etc. I guess I'd get jaded and set my planning aside for a while.Birgitte explains the features of each kind of geranium and their best uses and placement (will this one work in a rock garden or only woodland settings?), as well as having a great photo of most every flower and some of their leaves to show the many variationsand combinations. Many of the plants I have seen just recently on-line are included in this book, which made me pretty happy.I learned that Geranium 'Anne Folkard' may not survive a cold, damp winter unless I take extra care and shelter it a little, and G. pratense Midnight Reiter may not grow as fast as I would have liked it too to fill in the area where I wanted to place it.

After reading "Gardening with Hardy Geraniums", I am taking this book with me to the garden stores, with my slightly revised list, so if I see something else that calls out to me, I can look it up and know a heckova lot more than on the little plant tag.I wish more plant-specific books were more like this one--really interesting and informative without being just a list of plants with the same information on the plant tags.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
I already owned the well-known books on hardy geraniums by Trevor Bath / Joy Jones and Peter Yeo when this new book was published, so at first I hesitated a little before buying yet another book about this increasingly popular garden plant. I have not regretted buying it. I would't want to be without the other two books but the newcomer has a lot to offer: You will find many new cultivars that were unknown to the other authors; it's interesting to compare the experiences of someone gardening in Denmark, where climatic conditions are tougher, to those of English gardeners; there is a fascinating chapter on a leading Dutch breeder of geraniums; you'll find excellent chapters on cultivation and propagation, illustrated with useful pictures; there are 450 brilliant photographs, among them close-ups of flowers and leaves, so you can compare them handily, but also of whole plants and borders, so you get the "micro-perspective" as well as the "macro-perspective"; and, last not least, the author shows real passion when writing, very competently and wittily, about gardening with geraniums. If you are looking for a systematic and scientific monograph about cranesbills, you are better served with Peter Yeo's standard work (2nd edition), but if you are gardening and as crazy about geraniums as I am - then you can't do without this book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful gardening book
My son has loved this book since he was 1 year old and is now 2.Although the story is targetted at an older child, he loves the pictures and the process of gardening, it also goes through the need for sunshine and rain for the garden to grow. In particular he loves to spot the mouse, worm, bird, cat and dog on each page. The text itself is a little long on each page for a young child, but we just read the first sentence and he seemed happy with this to get the gist of the book.He will definitely continue to grow into this book.A wonderful purchase for the budding gardener!

4-0 out of 5 stars Will inspire children to want to garden
Monica Wellington, established author-illustrator has created another gem of a book in Zinnia's Flower Garden. This children's book chronicles a year in the life of a little girl's flower garden. Written for ages five and up, this book will have strong appeal for the budding green thumbs in your life. Several areas in this book are exceptional.

First, the language is beautiful! Children's books are known for their simple speech. While this book is easily understandable, Monica Wellington has created a story that sounds as pleasant as a flower garden is pretty. If you listen hard enough, you will surely hear some poetic devices beneath this lovely prose.

Second, the content of this book is unexpectedly rich. Zinnia's Flower Garden isn't just a story about a garden. It's also a child's instruction manual to creating such a garden. This book would be a great introduction to a gardening project with the little one in your life. While the storyline talks about creating a garden, the illustrations also include descriptions of cloud types, stages of germination, the life cycle of a butterfly, and a detailed description of the parts of a flower (we're talking stamen, pistil, stigma, etc.). Even a science teacher would be impressed by the amount of information contained in the illustrations of this book.

Overall, I found the visual appeal of this book to be mixed. The illustration is achieved by a collage of sorts with fabrics, photographs, and paper painted with gouche. While I loved the photographs, I found the painting to be over-simplistic and rather unappealing. However, this is actually a minor drawback as the book is rich in so many other ways.

Armchair Interviews says: Zinnia's Flower Garden is a book that can be brought out spring after spring--inspiring the next generation of gardeners! ... Read more

Why do gardeners start plants from seed instead of just buying a flat of seedlings from their local nursery? Necessity. Seedlings of unusual or exotic plants simply aren't available at garden stores, but they are available in seed. Then there's the cost factor. Afew packets of seeds are much cheaper than dozens upon dozens of seedlings. And finally there's the plants' health to consider. This is an excellent resource!Over 500 pages of information, nearly everything I have looked up, including unusual and hard-to-find perennials and annuals, has been in this book. All plants are listed by their latin name, and Powell has included an easy index at the back of the book to look up the latin names under the common names. It's a really handy volume- each listing includes: brief description w/ page reference for a photograph included near the back of the book; the type of plant (hardy perennial, etc.), zones, flowering season; directions for sowing both indoors and outdoors, germinating time and requirements; transplanting information; care; combination ideas; warnings if the plant is toxic; and my favorite - how to propagate (i.e. by division, cutting, seed collecting, etc.).Also, any "tricks" for germination (like needing to soak seeds ahead of time), are also in the description. For anyone growing from seed, this is an excellent resource - much handier and more complete than many out there.

Jerry Baker is known as America's master gardener--millions ofwould-be gardeners have warmed to his folksy PBS appearances and madebestsellers out of TheImpatient Gardener and The Impatient Gardener's LawnBook. Like Baker's other books, Flower Power isinexpensive and accordingly short on pretty pictures, but long on goodadvice, simply presented. For example:

In spring, generously applywood ashes from your fireplace all around your perennials, severalinches deep. This will help to enrich the soil. You can also use drieddog food for the same purpose. It contains many of the same nutrientsfound in organic fertilizers, such as blood meal and bone meal.

This is yet another book by Jerry Baker, the innovative gardener who uses everything from soap to beer to get his flowers growiong strong. The book is organized into sections that enable the reader to have a successful garden if they only take the time to read the book all the way through. But one can also jump around and find solutions to specific problems facing them in their own gardens.

Baker's writing style is down home common sense. He advocates using basic materials instread of mass produced herbicides or fertilizers to get gardens growing lushly. He doesn't say if his ways are more economical than using store bought materials (it's hard to justify the price of a 24 pack of beer only to put it all on your flowers), but he does offer up alternative to those who may not want to buy the potentially dangerous fertilizers and weed control chemicals.

Product Description

Hounds-tongue. Ragged robin. Costmary. Pennyroyal. All-heal. These plants, whose very names conjure up a bygone world, were among the great variety of flowers and herbs grown in America’s colonial and early Federal gardens. In this sumptuously illustrated book, a leading historic plant expert brings this botanical heritage back to life.

Drawing on years of archival research and field trials in Colonial Williamsburg’s gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia, Lawrence Griffith documents fifty-six species of flowers and herbs and provides details on how they were cultivated and used. For each plant, an elegant period hand-colored engraving, watercolor, or woodcut is presented along with glorious new photographs by Barbara Temple Lombardi.

This book is a dazzling treat for armchair gardeners and for those who have visited and admired the famous gardens of Colonial Williamsburg. It is also an invaluable companion for twenty-first-century gardeners who will appreciate the specific advice of a master gardener on how to plan, choose appropriate species for, and maintain a beautiful, historic flower and herb garden.

4-0 out of 5 stars Growing Heritage Plants
The journey began a long time ago and it's not yet over. We avoid using toxic chemicals in our gardens, we conserve water and we re-cycle organic waste to feed our plants. We are not that far away from re-discovering the flowering plants of our ancestors who grew, ate and utilized whatever nature provided.

Lawrence D Griffith studies period plants and researches their cultivation and use. If we are on the threshold of a trend to garden as our ancestors did then his work is prescient. His collaborator, Barbara Temple Lombardi is staff photographer for the Williamsburg Foundation. Together they have unveiled the intrinsic beauty and usefulness of a collection of plants many of us choose to ignore.

This is a beautifully illustrated documentation of the flowering plants cultivated and admired by early settlers of North America in general and Virginia in particular. It includes annual flowers, biennials plants, perennials and herbs.

Readers will discover a few surprises. Aquilegia Canadensis, Rudbekia fulgida, and Echinacea purpurea are plants native to North America, discovered by the settlers, incorporated into their gardens and still growing in our gardens today. On the other hand, the family of plants not native to North America, but introduced here by early settlers from Europe include Lychnis chalcedonica and Scabiosa atropurpurea.

Mr.Griffith has experimented with most, if not all, of the plants he describes in this book and conveniently encapsulates everything we need to know about each one in a boxed summary accompanying the text. That allows readers, not interested in the anecdotal history of each plant, to use this book as a "how to" guide for growing heritage plants. Conveniently, for the enthusiastic gardener who will follow the example set by the author, the book also contains a list of sources for purchasing heritage seed, with addresses in Canada, the US and the UK.

Gardeners who do not use a camera are always amazed by the beauty that nature photographers find in the mundane. When we walk along a rural road, we ignore the common milkweed growing by the wayside. It is ugly, boring and ubiquitous. Yet, in this book, the photographer has transformed Asclepia syriaca into a work of art. That's what I love about beautifully illustrated books on gardening. They allow us to see something old, as if it were new, for the very first time.

Product Description

In our modern world, the spiny-stemmed flowers, intertwined leaves, and delicate pink blossoms of the rubus fruticosus, or common blackberry bramble, might catch the eye of the casual observer or weekend gardener. Pleasant, prolific, and decorative, plants like the blackberry are looked upon as sources for harvest, landscape, and visual pleasure. To the medieval and Renaissance artist, however, these botanicals were far more. Part of a richly symbolic visual language culled from the classical era, their exquisite depiction in illuminated manuscripts of the age evoked fertility, conjured bad dreams, and even aligned itself with ancient wisdom. The popular and enduring appeal of flowers in medieval art and literature extended beyond simple botanical illustration; instead, flowers helped to tell countless stories without words through potent symbolic imagery.
The Medieval Flower Book artfully presents an alphabetical collection of over 100 of the major flowers that appear in medieval manuscripts—gathered with fascinating explanatory texts on their history, significance, and usage. Strikingly illustrated, the sumptuous reproductions that accompany each entry offer a visual reference to the symbolism of botanicals in medieval manuscripts that’s beyond breathtaking in its appeal. An introductory section explaining the ancient roots of practical horticulture’s expansion into cultural and spiritual realms not only places the volume in the context of gardening history, but gives the general reader insight into our enduring interest in these remarkable herbals.

Widely appealing to all of those interested in flowers and gardening, the horticultural historian, and the student of visual culture and medieval history, The Medieval Flower Book is a fascinating and important primer on the beauty and language of florals. Extensively ranging through the canon of medieval botanicals—from acanthus and anemones to violets and wallflowers—this volume is the perfect gift for anyone interested in blossoms and blooms, and should thrill the everyday gardener and art collector alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars About the flowers
The Medieval Flower Book is a lovely hardcover book about various flowers with a medieval illustration or two for each one.The emphasis is on the flowers themselves, where and why they were grown, and how they were used, with full the medieval drawings as illustrations. Each flower gets a one or two page treatment with minimal text. It's a good gift book.

I'd like to compare this with Flowers in Medieval Manuscripts, by the same author, which is a paperback that shows how the flowers were used in manuscripts as decoration, or as instruction, and how they were drawn.I actually find this book to be the more interesting of the two, especially ifyou are into caligraphy or illustration.

I like both books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Medieval Flower Book
It's a lovely book, and if it had been perfect I would have given it five stars; however, it arrived with a tear in the dust jacket. It was intended as a gift for an upcoming birthday, and was exactly the right gift for that particular individual. After looking through the book, I liked it so much that instead of returning it I decided to keep the torn copy for myself and purchase another one for the gift; however, since the fault wasn't mine, I didn't think I should have to pay shipping charges on the second copy.I e-mailed customer service twice, and never got a response.Time ran out, and I ended up having to give the damaged book as a gift anyway, but I wasn't happy about it. ... I own this book and recently purchased it for my son's kindergarten classroom. I read it to the class because they were getting ready to plant flowers to be braught home on Mothers Day and it was the first day of spring! The children can relate to the things that Fran likes and tries to feed her flower! They all enjoyed the book and laughed many times. We talked about the illustrations when we turned the pages and they really liked the bright and beautiful colors used. It was FUN reading this book, it kept their interest and most of all it was great seeing the smiles on their faces!
