Product Description
Containing habitat information, physical descriptions, photographs, and range maps for more than 150 species of freshwater fishes that can be found in Texas, this field guide is an indispensable reference and research tool for ichthyologists, professional fisheries biologists, amateur naturalists, and anglers alike.

The introductory section offers an illustrated guide to the common counts and measurements used for fish identification; a brief explanation of fish phylogeny; and a scientific key to help identify the fish families in Texas.

The book includes species accounts of native and introduced fishes found in the freshwaters of Texas. Each account covers the physical characteristics, habitat, and distribution of the fish, with additional comments of interest or importance to its life history and conservation status. With the largest collection to date of color photographs, including various color phases (breeding and non-breeding colors), the book also includes range maps within the species accounts. The closing pages of the book feature a glossary and reference section.

In a time when the state's water resources are beset by issues growing in both number and complexity, this book provides information for professionals and policy makers. It also contributes to the natural history education of the public. ... Read more

This seller gave exactly what he described, in perfect condition and on a very timely manner. I highly recommend this Seller. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
About as thorough and straightforward as a field guide can get. This one is a keeper. Very useful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Best available freshwater fishes of Texas book
Overall a good book, especially for the price. However, it has only a key to the families, and no key to the species found in Texas. The book also does not offer any quick ways to distinguish similar species. Some photos are great, others or poor. The range maps show only a general distribution in Texas and not specific localities, and no overall geographic distribution.Very little natural history is provided for each species. This could have easily been a 4 star book had it included a key to the species.

Also, the book strangely makes no mention of the Comanche Springs pupfish. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good book more stories than insights
I liked the book.I thought that there were better stories than insights though.Overall I would buy the book again but was looking for a little more...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book on fishing (and life) basics
Despite having a cabin near a nice lake, I hadn't been fishing for many... many... years. When I decided to have a go at it again I set about to find a good book that would give me the basics. What I found was Frank Baron's book which provided not only a good bit of information - but a welcome dose of the philosophy of fishing and... well... of life.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is even remotely interested in the topic.Since reading Frank's book I have set out to find others of equal quality, but I haven't found any yet.

"Did you learn anything useful?" you ask.

My first day out I hit the lake early.Following some of the guidance from the book, I moved to the downwind side where I found an area near some structure.I laid my line (rigged per one of Frank's suggestions)where the shade from the trees met the sun on the water (also per Frank's advice).

An hour later I had a nice rainbow in hand.

Since my only goal for the day was to catch dinner, I called it quits after that first fish. (See the chapter in the book on 'fishing ethics'.)

Thank's for a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just when you thought you knew all the answers, you learn more
I really like this book.It was a good refresher and a good reference manual if you want to get back into fishing and have been away for a while. There are some new techniques in here that look promising that I plan to try soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple tips
There really isn't much in this book that your grandpa didn't already teach you.

Would I recommend this book to a friend? No.If you know absolutely NOTHING about fishing, then buy this book. But if you know the basics already, skip it.

5-0 out of 5 stars entertaining and informative!
Good book full of good information for me as a relative beginner. I love the humorous way the author writes and love his stories.

Editorial Review

Product Description
"A remarkable accomplishment. . . . [This volume] has been and will continue to be a major force advancing freshwater fish parasitology."--Ernest H. Williams Jr., from the Foreword

This thoroughly revised and updated edition of a classic reference work is the definitive guide to the identification of the parasites of freshwater fishes of North America.

The book provides information on public health concerns about fish parasites, the methods used to examine fish for parasites, and those parasites found only in very selective organs or tissues. It lists the known species of each genus, along with reference citations that enable readers to find literature pertinent to species identification, life cycles, and in some cases, control. In the heart of the book, each chapter opens with a description of a phylum and its relevant families and genera, followed by a species list for those genera. Drawings illustrate a representative of each genus, and are supplemented by photographic examples.

Many new parasites of North American freshwater fishes have been discovered since the publication of the first edition thirty years ago. For this new edition, the author has added new species accounts and revised the taxonomy, expanded descriptions and discussion of the most important fish parasites, provided a glossary to aid nonspecialists, and updated the reference list through 1992. The volume features twice as many illustrations as the first edition, including the addition of 33 color photographs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooking Freshwater Fish
This is one of the best cookbooks I have found on the subject. The author is a Cordon Blue Chef who operates her own restuarant in South Minneapolis. She is also an avid outdoors woman who regularly submits recipes for the In-Fisherman magazine and has been featured on the In-Fisherman televison series many times.

The recipes are simple to prepare and easy to follow. An excellent addtion to anyone's library of books dealing with the outdoors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
This book's recipes are fabulous, easy to prepare and family friendly as well. The photography and layout are wonderful. When paging through this book you will feel inspired to try every dish. Another aspect of this cookbook that I really like is that most of the ingredients are readily available and even though it has a gormet "feel" to it, the recipes are easily prepared. Although I've always felt I'm a pretty good cook, I've struggled with confidence in the "fish department". Now that I have this book I feel much more assured of a good outcome. I've also adapted some of the recipes to ocean fish and they work great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book, great pictures
Great book; The author is pretty opiniated though; if you follow his rules you would only raise stingrays in a 300 gallon plus aquarium! Which I agree would be a great enviroment for the rays but realistically how many people are willing to make that sort of financial committment? Which makes a good point, you probably shouldn't buy freshwater stingrays unless you are really willing to commit to them; The book caused me to buy freshwater rainbow fish for my new 135 gallon tank instead of the rays; I have put a plan together though to save $ for a 500 gallon plus custom tank which I will mount in my office wall and eventually put rays in! So overall I would say the book is definetily worth the price and a must have if you are considering buying stingrays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photographs

An encyclopedia it is not, but it is a good honest little book that will help you through the problems that you may encounter with keeping tropical fish. If you follow the rules in this book you should encounter very few problems, but all fish-keepers have an occasional problem. Whether that be fish that do not get on together, or a case of white spot (a disease that can affect tropical fish, usually if they have a sudden change of water temperature. This disease can easily be cured by the introduction of a `medicine' that can be put into the water and is available from your tropical fish supplier.

Another point is that like humans not all fish get on with one another and this book will help you to ensure that all the inhabitants of your tank get on well together.. The book features over 200 fish popular with tropical fish keepers and although I have not counted them the blurb says that there are 500 colour photographs.

As I said at the beginning, not an encyclopedia but a book that is well written, by people who know what they are talking about, with lots of information for both the beginner and those who have kept fish for some time. There is always that snippet of information that has gone to the back of the mind of even the most competent of tropical fish hobbyists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This is the third and final volume to the now classic Handbook of Freshwater Fishery Biology. The completed set compiles life history data and information on individual species of freshwater fish in the United States and Canada. In volume three, each chapter treats a particular species of fish. For example, the chapter on Yellow Perch is 54 pages in length. Detailed tabular data on the fish are provided concerning the length, weights, weight-length relationships, total lengths, condition factors, daily growth, lengths and weights at various ages, and number of eggs per female. In addition it compiles information from the literature on population density, food, feeding behavior, reproduction, mortality, population distribution and behavior, environmental factors, and more. The text serves as an index to the literature for each fish. The lengthy list of citations referenced in the text attests to the work the author completed in combing the fish literature, it is 84 pages in length.

The set is geared more to the professional ichthyologist and fish and game personnel. It has no illustrations in any of the volumes. Its strength is in the summary and tabular presentation of life history data gleaned from hundreds of journal articles, books, government reports, and unpublished data for each species of fish. This classic should be in every academic, state, and large public library and is essential in any ichthyology collection. Highly recommended. ... Read more
