Product Description
Inspired by the immensely influential 1937 sociological study Middletown: A Case Study in Cultural Conflicts by Rovert and Helen Lynd, Peter Davis's six documentary films about Muncie, Indiana, set out to examine the lives of Munsonians in the early 1980s. The disputes and conflicts accompanying the filming revealed more about AMerican values and customs than the films themselves. While attempting to transform the data from the Middletown studies into a meaningful and interesting visual form, the filmmakers were constantly distracted by the pressures, decisions and perils of government- and corporate-funded documentary filmmaking. Dwight W. Hoover, a Muncie historian and collaborator in the iddletown film project, describes why the folms were make and how they changed the lives of everyone involved. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars poor scholarship
A very poor book on a fascinating documentary series.

The Middletown Film Project represented a significant crossroads for American documentary, and the ethical and censorship controversies raised (particularly by one film in the series, "Seventeen") presaged many of the issues American documentary makers were to face in the decades that followed.

Unfortunately, Hoover's understanding of documentary is woefully simplistic. He fails to grasp key issues around documentary and broadcast practice, and the text is riddled with factual errors.

Frankly, I'm surprised that this book is in print.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dull
A waste of time. The author doesn't know anything about documentary filmmaking or visual anthropology, and it clearly shows.

5-0 out of 5 stars The February 2, 1997 reviewer didn't read the book.
Please take the FEb 2, 1997 review off the web. It doesn't make any sense ("inclusion"?) and it assumes things about the author that are not in the book itself ("failed academic" and"paranoid"). The review borders on being actionable....

1-0 out of 5 stars A badly written vendetta, by a failed academic.
Hoover felt slighted by his total inclusion from the production of these films, and wrote this hard-to-follow book as payback. Unlike most paranoid vendettas, this one isn't even interesting... a waste of money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT BOOK ABOUT THE MOVIE!
This book tells you all about the making of the X-filesmovie. It has info about hardships, funny events during shooting, andis overall an informative book. It is great for everybody interested in the X-FILES!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the most interesting book I've ever read!
Jody Duncan really captures the real aspect of the X-Files.She turned odd words into understandable terms. I myself am an X-Phile, and I'm guessing she is too.I am surprised there is only 1 review so far. Everyone should buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The X-Files: Behind The Scenes....pick it up!
This book is the only behind-the-scenes look at the X-Files. I am a loyal X-Phile and the cover alone is worth the cost. It is Xellent! Filled with photos, snippets of dialogue from the feature film and trivia, this book is Xellent! Jody Duncan is brilliant...my guess is she is a devoted X-Phile herself, as she delivers her thoughts accross to the reader so well. This book also has great facts about the movie, and the pages about the "black oil" is just dessert for any fan of the show or film! This book also explains a lot about the ongoing conspiracy line so far, where the film leads Mulder and Scully to as well as exclusive interviews with Chris Carter [creator], David Duchovny [Fox Mulder], Gillian Anderson [Dana Scully], other old faces from the show as well as newcomers - but it just wouldn't be complete without interviews with the crew who make The X-Files movie what it is. I suggest any movie buff or true X-Phile goes down to their local bookshop and buys this immediately - a must have! Now, here is a sentence from BEHIND THE SCENES: THE X-FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE FILM "Never forgetting their past, or how precarious their present remains, Agents Mulder and Scully are armed with the truth...and the courage to fight the future." ... Editorial Review

Product Description
"Making Your First Film" is a concise and meaty resource that will pay for itself a thousand times over. It doesn't wax eloquent about things you don't have time to read. It's not an all encompassing treaty on filmmaking because reading text books won't get your film made. And it includes something that most books don't; the owner of the book receives THREE FREE emails and/or telephone contacts with our Hollywood Production Company, Castlight Pictures. We will take your emails and talk to you on the telephone to get you started. You will receive expertise from our producers/directors and writers. What book gives you that?

You've heard the adage in one of Tiger Woods' commercials that success is 90% perspiration and 10% inspiration. Well, filmmaking is about the same ratio. Darwinian odds are at play more than film schools and "long-winded" books want to admit. It's more about "doing" than "knowing."

Most people can figure out how to write, get written or buy a script. What they can't figure out is how to get the money to make their film and what to do next. Regardless if it's a short, a feature or a documentary only those who know how to mine their own resources and contacts to raise capital are going to be filmmakers. Anybody can write a script and hope Hollywood comes calling. I can't tell you how many scripts and people with them are out there. All waiting for an Agent, an Option, a Sale or Film Deal to propel them into what they really want to do: make films!

This book is different. If you don't want to work hard, and I mean hard, at making your film, go buy a treaty on filmmaking, hang out at Starbucks and tap on your laptop along with the others. However, if you're ready to make things happen, today, then let's get started. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Goes where the others don't...
Not only is this book informative on the nuts and bolts of making your first film, but it goes where the other books don't.In this book, the author talks about how to raise funds, how to structure it, how to assemble a production team. All of this is information you don't hear much of in film school, or even other filmmaking books. This is not a book to read if you're looking to develop a visual style, or if you're interested in film theory. This is a nuts and bolts information guide, filled with personal anecdotes from the producer who wrote it, on how to get your first film off the ground and make it... yourself. It also comes with some contacts to a production company which I think could be helpful to those looking for more specific instruction.Highly recommended. ...
