Excerpt: Fire (Hindi: ) is a 1996 film directed and written by Deepa Mehta, starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das. It is the first of Mehta's Elements trilogy. It is followed by Earth (1998) and Water (2005). The film is loosely based on Ismat Chugtai's 1941 story Lihaf (The Quilt). It is the first Indian film to explicitly show homosexual relations. After its 1998 release in India, right-wing Hindu groups staged several violent protests, setting off a flurry of public dialogue around issues such as homosexuality and freedom of speech. The film is set in contemporary Delhi, India, in the household of a joint family which runs a fast-food and video business in the ground floor of their two-story home. The protagonists are the two daughters-in-law, both of whom have joined the family by marriage: Sita (Nandita Das), who is newly wed to the younger son Jatin (Javed Jaffrey); and Radha (Shabana Azmi), who has been married to the elder son Ashok (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) for 15 years. Both couples are unhappy. Jatin, who feels he has been pressured into marriage by the family, neglects Sita and continues to see his Chinese girlfriend. Ashok has chosen to become a tapasvin (an ascetic) after discovering that Radha is infertile, and has been using her to test his resolve in celibacy for 13 years. The two women turn to each other for solace and become lovers. Tipped off by a servant, Ashok discovers them in bed together. Sita leaves, while Radha, who wishes to explain matters to Ashok, promises to meet her outside to start a new life together. In the confrontation that follows, Radha's sari catches fire from the kitchen stove and...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1788713 ... Read more

Chapters: Sundance Film Festival. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 100. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Sundance Film Festival is a film festival that takes place annually in the state of Utah, in the United States. It is the largest independent cinema festival in the United States. Held in January in Park City, Salt Lake City, and Ogden, as well as the Sundance Resort, the festival is the premier showcase for new work from American and international independent filmmakers. The festival comprises competitive sections for American and international dramatic and documentary films, both feature-length films and short films, and a group of non-competitive showcase sections, including the New Frontier, Spectrum, and Park City @ Midnight. Sundance 2002 Sundance began in Salt Lake City in 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival in an effort to attract more filmmakers to Utah. It was founded by Sterling Van Wagenen (then head of Wildwood, Robert Redford's company), John Earle and Cirina Hampton Catania (both serving on the Utah Film Commission at the time). With Chairperson Robert Redford, and the help of Governor Scott Matheson of Utah, the goal of the festival was to showcase strictly American-made films, highlight what the potential of independent film could be and to increase visibility for filmmaking in Utah. At the time, the main focus of the event was to conduct a competition for independent American films, present a series of retrospective films and filmmaker panel discussions and to celebrate the Frank Capra Award (given the first year to Jimmy Stewart); it highlighted the work of "regional" filmmakers who worked outside the Hollywood system. The jury of the 1978 festival was headed by Gary Allison, and included Verna Fields, Linwood Gale Dunn, Katherine Ross, Charles E. Sellier ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23943448 ... Read more

Typical lighting of Landhaus and Uferbau during the festivalThe Solothurn Film Festival ranks among the oldest film festivals in Switzerland. Due to its focus on Swiss film productions, it is also the most important festival for Swiss filmmaking. In 1966 the Solothurn Film Guild organised a meeting on Swiss film today. The aim of this was to create new ideas and inspiration for young, independent Swiss filmmakers. From this evolved the Schweizerische Gesellschaft Solothurner Filmtage (SGSF), the association responsible for organising the festival. Excerpt: The Mar del Plata International Film Festival (Spanish: ) is a prestigious international film festival that takes place every year, during the month of November in the city of Mar del Plata, Argentina. It is the only competitive feature festival recognized by the FIAPF in Latin America and the oldest in this category in the Americas. Created in 1954, it was not considered to be a competitive festival, it was more of a display of selected international movies; during this stage the event was named Festival Cinematográfico Internacional (International Cinematographic Festival). During the early years, famous international guests concurred to the event, such as Gina Lollobrigida and Errol Flynn. The festival continued until 1959 when the Asociación de Cronistas Cinmetograficos took charge of running it, and during this time the festival was approved and recognized by FIAPF. In 1964 the festival took a temporary move to Buenos Aires and the name was changed to Festival Cinematográfico Internacional de la República Argentina (International Cinematographic Festival of the Argentine Republic). In the year 1966 a coup occurred in Argentina, and in the years 1968 and 1970 the Instituto de Cine took charge of the festival. During 1967 1969 the festival was cancelled because other festivals occurred in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the 1960s several well-known guests appeared, including: Paul Newman, Alberto Sordi, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Vittorio Gassman, Toshir Mifune, François Truffaut, Karel Reisz, Catherine Deneuve, Juan Antonio Bardem, Anthony Perkins, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Maria Callas, Cantinflas, Andrzej Wajda, Jacques Tati, Lee Strasberg, George Hamilton, and others.
