Excerpt: Fidel "Eddie" Valdez Ramos (born March 18, 1928), popularly known as FVR, was the 12th President of the Philippines from 1992 to 1998. During his six years in office, Ramos was widely credited and admired by many for revitalizing and renewing international confidence in the Philippine economy. Prior to his election as president, Ramos served in the Cabinet of President Corazon Aquino first as chief-of-staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and, later on, as Secretary of National Defense from 1986 to 1991. During the historic 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, Ramos, along with then Defense Minister Juan Ponce Enrile, was hailed as a hero by many Filipinos for his decision to breakaway from the administration of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos and pledge allegiance and loyalty to the newly-established revolutionary government of President Aquino, following the downfall of Marcos from power in February 1986. Previously, he was the AFP vice chief-of-staff under President Marcos. Under Ramos' leadership, the Philippines experienced a period of political stability and rapid economic growth and expansion, as a result of his policies and programs designed to foster national reconciliation and unity. Ramos was able to secure major peace agreements with Muslim separatists, communist insurgents and military rebels, which renewed investor confidence in the Philippine economy. Ramos also aggressively pushed for the deregulation of the nation's major industries and the privatization of bad government assets. As a result of his hands-on approach to the economy, the Philippines was dubbed by various international magazines and observers as Asia's Next Economic...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=378466 ... Product Description
"I would like to read about me--what everyday things happened to me--when I am an old woman. Right now I am only 11 years, 5 months."

Angeles Monrayo (1912–2000) began her diary on January 10, 1924, a few months before she and her father and older brother moved from a sugar plantation in Waipahu to Pablo Manlapit's strike camp in Honolulu. Here for the first time is a young Filipino girl's view of life in Hawai'i and central California in the first decades of the twentieth century--a significant and often turbulent period for immigrant and migrant labor in both settings. Angeles' vivid, simple language takes us into the heart of an early Filipino family as its members come to terms with poverty and racism and struggle to build new lives in a new world. But even as Angeles recounts the hardships of immigrant life, her diary of "everyday things" never lets us forget that she and the people around her went to school and church, enjoyed music and dancing, told jokes, went to the movies, and fell in love.

Essays by Jonathan Okamura and Dawn Mabalon enlarge on Angeles' account of early working-class Filipinos and situate her experience in the larger history of Filipino migration to the United States. Tomorrow's Memories not only provides a rare glimpse into the lives of Pinays during the 1920s and 1930s, but also contributes valuable insights into the study of race, class, and gender in American history and the study of power and resistance in Asian American and ethnic studies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Today's America and it's people, in revealing subtleties.
Reading this novel is like going into the hearts and minds of millions ofimmigrants to America in the last two hundred years and feeling what theymust have felt, thinking what they must have thought when they first setfoot here and began a new life. This book is a very revealing documentof the human side of the making of America. Very delicately written withsuperb treatment of many human sensitivities few writers are able to touchupon, or even fully understand. The author of this novel does, and I hopehe continues to share this understanding with us through his writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is abook rich with underlying substance and meaning.
After I read this novel, I could only wish there were more of its kind tobe found among a mountain of mediocre works in print nowadays out there. There is so much this book tells which make me stop and think andappreciate who I am and what little I have. Just for being an American.Just for being here, in America.I am re-reading some of the chaptersand will probably end up re-reading the whole book, for wanting to get moreof a fill of the good scenes and passages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of many revelations about being an American.
I'm glad I found this book.I will treasure it for as long as I live, andfor as long as I am an American. As early as a quarter of the way, aroundpage 85 in Chapter 5, I just had to keep reading this very touching novel. Once it got to me, it wouldn't let go.Or I wouldn't let go.The storyappears run-of-the-mill at first for a material of this type --socio-cultural-ideological; immigrant Americans alongside mainstreamsociety. But when Mr. Espiritu started looking into the hearts and mindsof some of these American characters: the economic underclass, thehomeless, the confused youth, the broken families of middle America, itbegan to hit home. It was all of hurting, painful, angering, and yettouching and so very gratifying in that it made me appreciate my being anAmerican, and being in America. If you're feeling down and out andneed a lift, read this novel! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes
This is a very well put together book of fil/am delights. Lots of great recipes and even soups and salads. Mouth watering pictures to accompany the recipes from beginning to end, and easy to follow instructions. Malugod ito....Gusto ako!

5-0 out of 5 stars Asian but with a lot of foreign influence
The dishes in this book fit the title: Filipino American. That is, they are based on the traditional foods of the Philippines but modified to allow the chef to take advantage of fresh local products, and of a minimum of specialty spices. The resulting foods are thus more suited to both the American taste and the American supermarket than highly traditional recipies.

Philippine food traditions are based on their particular variant on oriental cooking, but modified by years of invluence from incoming cultures. The Spanish took over the island in 1542 and left them with a deep impression of Spanish culinary heritage (paella for instance, but without saffron). The Spanish in turn brought with them some Mexican influence. And then there were the Americans, the Japanese, the Chinese.

Ms. Aranas has done an excellent job of fitting these into an American kitchen. You will be hard pressed to flip through this book without finding something that you want to try. ... Read more

Product Description
Historically, Filipina/o Americans have been one of the oldest and largest Asian American groups in the United States. In this pathbreaking work of historical scholarship, Dorothy B. Fujita-Rony traces the evolution of Seattle as a major site for Philippine immigration between World Wars I and II and examines the dynamics of the community through the frameworks of race, place, gender, and class. By positing Seattle as a colonial metropolis for Filipina/os in the United States, Fujita-Rony reveals how networks of transpacific trade and militarism encouraged migration to the city, leading to the early establishment of a Filipina/o American community in the area. By the 1920s and 1930s, a vibrant Filipina/o American society had developed in Seattle, creating a culture whose members, including some who were not of Filipina/o descent, chose to pursue options in the U.S. or in the Philippines.
Fujita-Rony also shows how racism against Filipina/o Americans led to constant mobility into and out of Seattle, making it a center of a thriving ethnic community in which only some remained permanently, given its limited possibilities for employment. The book addresses class distinctions as well as gender relations, and also situates the growth of Filipina/o Seattle within the regional history of the American West, in addition to the larger arena of U.S.-Philippines relations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fil-Am Philippines Commonwealth period
Great reading - perhaps because I am a fil-am who has been there, so I have a biased perspective. To qualify, I am NOT of that period, which makes this interesting for those of us first generation Fil-ams in the post-war period. Very rare to see a memoir by a"non-VIP" - i.e.I was a war hero, dissident and or politician" and the author writes it with appealing candor. This is not for the war-buff as he was imprisoned after the fall of Corregidor but very informative and insightful into the timewhen the Philippines was still a US colony, of which there are few written accounts and stories from the Filipino side, most biographies it seems to me, being during and after WWII.He talks about how his parents met (he gleaned most of the info it seems from his mother who lived until the mid-70;s) and the bulk of the book is devoted to his childhood period- appropriately as indicated in the title -in Manila during the short Commonwealth period until it was interrupted by the Japanese invasion, by which point the narrator is already a young man in college. I wont give away more details but suffice to say this is a rare historical book by a greater rarity - a son ofa Filipino father and American woman born during the 1920's when Manila was beginning to have American style suburb and amenities. I'm certainly glad I discovered this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rich in detail
Never has a writer colorfully described the World War II as Norman Reyes. He successfully remembered all the rich details of having to live in the Philippines during the pre-war era when the country was being Americanized. His rich details of the war and his heroic acts during the occupation ofthe Japanese brings us the front seat experience of how Filipinos andAmericans became involved in such a bloody fight considered as one of thebloodiest in Philippine history ...
