Editorial Review Product Description As of January 1st 2006 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began requiring food manufacturers to list trans fat (i.e., trans fatty acids) on Nutrition lables. But companies can still emblazon their packaging with "Trans Fat Free" even if a food has trans fats in levels less than .5 grams a serving. Confused? You're not alone.. Enter The Trans Fat Free Kitchen, a simple, practical book that gives you a real-world guide to avoiding trans fats. A study in the Lancet proved that eating a mere 5 grams of trans fats a day increased women's rates of dying from a heart attack by 50 percent (5 grams of trans fat is found in one medium order of McDonald’s fries or one small donut!) If you or someone you love wants to shed pounds and keep their heart healthy, there's good news: Eliminating or drastically reducing the amount of trans fat from your diet is the most effective thing you can do. The better news? Here's a simple guide to trans fat made simple. You’ll learn: PLUS: Noted nutritionist and mom Ronni Litz Julien gives you the skinny (literally!) on everything you need to know to enjoy a trans fat free lifestyle (minus all the science you don’t have time to read). 500 fat free
Review of cookbook:500 Fat-Free Recipies
Simple, tasty, Fat Free cooking for humans
Painless and meatless
Good for Ornish followers or lacto-ovo vegetarians. There is no space/some small space inthe margins for notes although there is nutritional info. There are somevegan or vegan-friendly variations, but you have to hunt and pick. It'seasier to adapt to L/O than vegan -- it's usually right there in thevariation (ex: "use chicken broth or vegetable broth"). Thereweren't any overly exotic ingredients to me but the introduction does goover the ingredients used and explains what they are. That would be usefulfor cooking novices. Some of the combinations are a little odd. Sometimes this works great and it's refreshing, other times it leaves meshort of expectations. There is however, a consistancy of style across therecipes, and it's not bad if you want to be adventurous. I'd consider thismore a "supplemental" cookbook rather than a "hardcoremainstay" one in my cookbook collection. Overall, it's a nicecollection, but not necessarily my favorite one when I was l/o and now thatI am vegan I rarely use it. I didn't think it was so great that I wantedthe other cookbooks she wrote later but who knows? Maybe those improved. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Now you can enjoy all the bread you want without any worry about fat. Over 150 irresistible recipes in this volume transform your bread machine from an efficient home bakery into an invaluable aid to nutrition. Most of these aromatic loaves contain 5 percent or less of fat. on top of that, these fresh-baked doughs contain absolutely no sugar or artificial sweeteners. All that is added are natural fresh and dried fruits, vegetables, and grains forextra flavor and vitamins, minerals, and fiber. Recipes run the gamut from mildly sweet, subtly flavored "Breakfast Breads," like Cranberry Buns, Banana Buttermilk Bread, and Whole Wheat Raisin Bagels, to chewy, firm-slicing "Sandwich Breads," such as Seven-Grain Bread, Lentil Bread, and Italian Sourdough. Creative bakers will love the assortment of stuffed and shaped breads and dumplings and such appetizers as Fresh Tomato Pizza and Chinese Dried Mushroom Dumplings made easily with dough from the bread machine. For people on a low-sodium diet, or smart eaters who just want to cut down on the amount of sodium they ingest, there is an entire chapter on "No-Salt Breads," including many traditional favorites such as Salt-Free Pumpernickel and Salt-Free Onion Rye. You won't believe the no-sugar sweets-Tart Tatin, Chocolate Tea Bread, and Biscotti with Dried Cherries are just a sampling -- that make up the "Dessert Breads" chapter. These taste luxuriously rich but are low in fat. And so that there's no waste, ideas included in "Bread Again" offer tasty low-fat, no-sugar ways to use leftover loaves. Customer Reviews (9)
