4-0 out of 5 stars Variety is the American way
Variety is here, if you like that in historical fashion. I like this collection by Tom, but it didn't "pop" for me like some of his other recent stuff, like Hoop Skirts & Crinolines or the Art Deco books did. Great if you like American fashions, and its worth flipping thru. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I am a tailor and I purchased this book to train my new employees on the basics of suit pattern making. It is great literature for them to take home and continually study.I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn to make a suit, slacks or shirts.

2-0 out of 5 stars There's better.
Not for the kinesthetic learner. Not user friendly. If you want to spend the time with it, you'll come out with a tailored jacket, pre-specified shirt or trousers, but not a book to get questions answered. There's a measurement chart, intro to taking measurements and making blocks.May be an accessory book, not a textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This is a great book for men's patternmaking.I've had a lot of trouble finding a book to produce men's slopers but this covers that as well pattern constructions for vests, pants, and jackets.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Practical Guide To Patternmaking For Fashion Designers: Menswear
Detailed, yet understandable text describes design of men's fashion from making sloper to final pattern-making.Describes use of pattern-making tools.

Spiral binding has held up so far under hard use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Comprehensive Study
In the very first chapters a lot of useful information is presented, and a the reader is given a good insight on the fashion industry and the role of patternmaking. Then you're given a list of tools you'll need to begin your own patternmaking and from there on out you should be set with this book as your guide.I've also purchased the women's book and it looks like it will be just as helpful, but one thing at a time... ... You will learn how to draw up a winning business plan (the companion CD-ROM has the actual business plan you can use in Microsoft WordTM) and about basic cost control systems, copyright and trademark issues, branding, management, legal concerns, sales and marketing techniques, and pricing formulas. You will learn how to set up computer systems to save time and money, how to hire and keep a qualified professional staff, how to meet IRS requirements, how to manage and train employees, how to generate high profile public relations and publicity, and how to implement low cost internal marketing ideas. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not written by fashion insider
I'm currently thinking about starting my own clothing line, with the goal of having my line sold at upscale boutiques and better department stores. After reading the reviews of other similar books, I decided to buy this one because it came with a CD with an editable business plan. While that is a plus, this book provides only the basics for starting a fashion business, with some references to further research you should do on your own. For my goal, the major downside to this book is that it was not written by a fashion insider who has actually created a commercially successful fashion clothing line. According to the author biography, the author is a marketing consultant. My definition of a commercially successful fashion clothing line is having multi-million dollar purchase orders from all the major department stores. Although the book provides case studies of people who have started their own clothing lines, the case studies are of brands that are local brands that are not recognized nationally. After reading this book, I feel that I need to buy other books on the same topic for more insight.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book reads like an extended high school term paper. Some of the biographies could qualify for an entry to the wikipedia- others barely merit an entry in a bibliography...for a high school term paper. The illustrations are inked by the same undistinctive hand- which is rather sad and occasionally pathetic. The absence of context- the absence of variety, the absence of flavor all make for a very dull and uniforming "encyclopedia" indeed. I shudder to think of the school papers that will be written using this book as source material.
Are the authors and editors that worked on this project so uninspired by this field?

One hundred years of style by decade and designer.

The twentieth century experienced the most fashion changes in history: from hoop skirts to mini skirts, from wearing cotton to plastic. Fashion was as turbulent as the times. Throughout it all, Vogue magazine was there, as the leading visual filter.

The book chronicles and explores one hundred years of developments and movements, including:- 20s flappers- Christian Dior's New Look- Swinging Sixties- New Romanticism- 90s Eclecticism

Illustrated with eye-catching archive images, 20th Century Fashion also features the work of the photographers who helped immortalize seminal fashion images. An A-Z section profiles two hundred and fifty of the greatest fashion designers who inspired, created and altered the course of fashion -- from Azzedine Alaïa to Zoran by way of Balenciaga and Yohji Yamamoto.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just OK.
This is a very small book. It's about the size of a paperback novel. The first half is a very brief history of western fashion, focusing on each decade of the 20th century. The second half contains very brief biographies of many fashion designers. How brief?Sometimes there are 5 on a single small page. There are very few photos.I would have liked to have seen one or two photos of every designer's work.Instead there's maybe one photo for every fifth designer. The book is good for a quick lookup of "Who? Never heard of them before."It's not great if you really want to know about someone's work.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FASHION BOOK!
This is the book you need if you are looking for a complete -and at the same time- condensed history of 20th century fashion and its most important designers.
It is very interesting and well written, besides... it has amazing pictures! Great value for your money ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegance, Imagination, Attitude - We've Come So Far!
VOGUE was launched in New York on December 17, 1892. This outstanding book chronicles more than just a century of fashion. Written with in-depth focus, this gorgeous book hits on the pulse of the attitudes, societal values, and social elegance that the designer's portrayed, as well as how American culture was reinvented decade after decade. This is one outstanding book, and shows just how far we've come. Special thanks to Linda Watson for an outstanding job in bringing the 20th century to life. Simply FANTASTIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars biographies of 245 international fashion designers
Vogue Twentieth Century Fashion - 100 Years of Style by Decade and Designer is another superb book, which we recommend. Written by Linda Watson it is very informative and also has the status of a coffee table book. The book contains the biographies of 245 international fashion designers and couturiers. It starts off with a description about the various fashion decades of the 20th Century. Entertaining are the quotes from old Vogue magazines about the latest fashion trends. The oldest Vogue, which is quoted is from 19 August 1909. Needless to say that there are many pictures and photos on each page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Item exactly as promised
The book I ordered arrived exactly as promised.I am very pleased with my purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictures are a little dated, but the techniques will never go out of style
If I could have given this 4-and-a-half stars, I would have.OK, so the pictures and the styles are dated. If you can look past that, you will find techniques that you can apply to any modern garment you wish to create. The instructions are clear and concise, which is what really matters. The layout makes it easy to find what you need when you need it.This is stuff you aren't going to learn in Home Ec, or from those flimsy commercially-produced patterns aimed at the home-sewing crowd.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Nifty Addition to Your Sewing Repertoire
Even as a beginner, i found this book extremely helpful.when learning a new technique, this book will help you add a new flare to it.for example, the buttonhole - once you learn the basic technique, this book will help you take it one step further. So basic, yet so advanced!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sewing
I wanted a good reference book on advanced sewing skills and this did not do that.It showed several selected types of details, none that I would ever use, and then expained how to do them.If you want a more broad explaination, this book won't work for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed to find a book that lives up to it's title.
This is indeed a step by step book on sewing. The book is divided into two parts... the first concentrating on technique, the second on design basics. The book is formatted by using an outline to describe each sewing technique. This formatting establishes consistency and allows the reader to skip around the book choosing to read what they need. Each lesson begins with a short introduction followed by tools and supplies, pattern preparation, and assembly. There are clear close-up photographs, illustrations, and diagrams to accompany the lesson. An intermediate to advanced sewer can easily follow along to learn designer "secrets" that will make garments polished.A beginner can also benefit from the instruction however the book assumes a fundamental knowledge of terms such as bias, crossgrain etc. There is a short glossary included but the book does not instruct on basic sewing.
I was pleased to find asection on preparing a jacket lining since most patterns do not include the lining. The author shows you in one lesson how to draft a lining pattern. The next lesson is how to sew and insert the lining. The instruction is clear and concise.
The section on zippers is limited but the majority of the book tackles the most common problems encountered in making a garment. It is not an encyclopedic book on sewing.
The book is neutral and not a blatant advertisement of any particular sewing company's product.
Overall it is a well written, useful book for garment making. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Cool Book

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for a the Fashion-Obsessed!
If fashion is your addiction, meet your quick fix. This book is beautiful, accessible and comprehensive. For all students, followers, trend-setters of fashion design and style, it would make a wonderful addition to your library.
It must be stated that the book is more a look into American fashion designers, from the end of the 1920's to 2007, than American fashion itself. After all, the book is published by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The best way to analogize how this fact affects the book is to compare it to a history of American Cinema, published by the American Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscar-awarding organization.) This absolutely colors, biases and focuses the approach the book follows into what is by definition a vast subject. Throughout, it places the designer as the determining and dictating factor of style within the culture. Whether it makes a good argument for this is up to you to decide... Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that this helps keep the book focused, yet detailed.
The photography included in the book is exquisite and sharp. Especially true of the mid-century photography, it far exceeds the quality of that available in vintage fashion magazines.
Whether you are a novice/hobbyist or an established member of the industry, this is a delightful, insightful and thorough look at the subject. Even if its true title should be "American Fashion Designers: An Illustrated History."

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book but not quite what I expected
This is a beautiful book, with stunning pictures and the text no doubt forms an authoritative picture of the evolution of American fashion from the 30's to the present.I was disappointed, however, that there weren't more "nostalgia" pictures, for lack of a better term.Everything was so artistic that there weren't the pictures of, say, Cybill Shepard in classic 60's mod taken from Glamour, that I would have liked to see and that would have made things more accessible. This is more a book for fashion professionals or students than the casual reader which still makes it an excellent buy and great book, but just not for me. ... James Abbe, a 1920s fashion photographer, and Zoran, thedesigner whose simple, monochromatic clothes were extremely popular inthe 1970s, anchor the 500 entries in this massive encyclopedia offashion. Each designer, photographer, model, or icon gets a page witha large photo and informative but short caption. This has thewonderful effect of weighting each entry equally, thereby devoting thesame amount of space to Charles Revson, creator of the Revloncosmetics empire and relative makeup newcomer François Nars, pioneering clothing designer Mariano Fortuny and contemporary favoriteTom Ford.

Clearly, a good set of eyes edited this book. It's a tall order tochoose just one image to define the many facets of a designer, model,or photographer. The choices made here are excellent and oftensurprising. The indomitable Coco Chanel demonstrates the ease ofmovement her designs afforded women by briskly swinging her arm out toone side, while Kate Moss is shown at the height of her waifdom, likely the mode in which she will best be remembered. Model LindaEvangelista is pictured with curly locks of hair. It's obvious, too, that the editors employed the haphazard juxtaposition created bythe alphabetical organization. Facing entries, no matter how seeminglyincongruous, are united by a visual theme, to spectacular effect.Theovals made by the either screaming or yawning mouths of Kurt Cobainand his infant daughter are mirrored in a 1937 Jean Cocteauillustration of an Elsa Schiaparelli design. A model in a 1930s outfitby John-Frederics faces a portrait of post-punk design queen BetseyJohnson, whose floral outfit echoes the flowery silhouette behind themodel. A troika of Robert Lee Morris bracelets matches the arcs of abombed-out London building in a 1941 Beaton photo of a Digby Mortondesign. The vibrant prints of Emilio Pucci and Lilly Pulitzer falltogether naturally.

The reams of fabulous images and the inventive design alone make TheFashion Book a treat at any cost, but the low price-to-size ratio (likeits cousins The Art Book and The Photography Book) makesit a real steal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great personal touch
Item was delievered in a quick amount of time, and was in great condition. Seller added a personal touch of gift wrapping the item and adding a personal note.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book, but there are some problems.
The Fashion book features over 500 pages of the best designers, photographers, icons and much more over the past 150 years. But one particular thing I have noticed, is that Anna Wintour (the editor in chief of American Vogue magazine) is not featured in this book. Anna Wintour is considered the most powerful person in the fashion industry. Yet, she isn't considered in icon?Other than that, each page has an illustration that is as much fun to look at, as it is the read the passages. I love this book. Best $10.00 investment I've made in a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, more biographies for children!
What a wonderful fairy-tale story -- all the more amazing because it's a true story about a real person!

Vera Wang is quite an inspirational figure for anyone, demonstrating that it's possible to follow your dreams & that perseverence pays off. It seems her life could have been one of ease & opulence, but instead Wang chose a career in a very tough field where you're judged by your talent & hard work, not your family history. In fact, as an Asian American woman at that time, she broke the boundaries, blazing trails for others to follow. I'm glad Ms. Louie has written this as a children's book, the better to introduce younger generations to the contributions of Asian Americans to this country's incredible history & achievements.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite parts
I really enjoyed this book because it is a success story about a very gifted young lady. When she became a fashion designer and after she got married, she opened the Bridal Shop. My favorite parts are when she started ice skating, when she took ballet lessons, and when she started to draw. I really like these things too. I would suggest this book to other girls and boys my age (9).

5-0 out of 5 stars Vera Wang: Queen of Fashion
I was delighted to receive "Vera Wang:Queen of Fashion" with the author's autograph. This is an intelligent children's book that, instead of talking down to children, inspires them with a remarkable (and true) story delivered with respect for its readers. Ms. Louie's writing is enthusiastic, fluid, descriptive and age-appropriate; the illustrations are perfect. This book encourages girls to believe in themselves and to work hard to achieve their dreams. A wonderful message for children of all ages and nationalities! I am looking forward to reading "Vera Wang" to my grandkids. Rona Sands, Teacher of the Handicapped ... Read more

They include Jean Patou, whose Paris couture house led fashion in the 1920s andÂ'30s, Coco Chanel, who brought comfort and practicality to haute couture, Elsa Schiaparelli, who collaborated in her designs with surrealist painter Salvador Dali, Mary Quant, who designed for LondonÂ's youth culture in the Â"swinging sixties,Â" and Gianni Versace, champion of the supermodel. Others include Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Guccio Gucci, Philip Treacy, Levi Strauss, and 40 others. Small in size but filled with information and insights, each Icons of Culture title is a collection of brief, pithy, and enlightening biographies of men and women who have made their mark and left lasting influences in the lively arts. Scattered among these capsule biographies are two-page overviews that examine various aspects of the art. 2-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: THIS IS A TINY REFERENCE BOOK.
I was quite surprised and ultimately disappointed to receive this tiny edition featuring the world's leading designers over the past one hundred years. I was expecting a 'larger than life' book as the cover looked very enticing.

Worse, the editorial was merely a bland overview and nothing new was revealed. Many influential designers were also omitted from the text as well, especially from the 1960s and 1970s.

It's a shame the publisher didn't allow the author more editorial pages and pictorial spreads. I think then, they would've had a gem on their hands.

My rating reflects more on the style of book.

Having said that, the book is not expensive so if you're wanting a quite reference book on the Who's Who of the Fashion Industry, then this is a neat edition for your desk.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very informative
Very disappointed upon receiving this book, as it is tiny, almost more like a pamplet. But my chief complaint is that so many designers are overlooked. The designers who are profiled in this mini-book are only given a paragraph each. I also expected more photos in a book about the 50 most iconic fashion designers, yet there are just a few small photos, and none are very interesting. No photos from the Sixties or Seventies. I love seeing photos of, say, Ossie Clark's, Paco Rabanne's or Andre Courreges' designs. You won't find any of that in this book. ... Read more

This is the first book to embrace the whole of the UK and its creative influence on international fashion. It is aimed at industry professionals, students, and anyone with an interest in fashion. Both inspirational and informative, it will also appeal as a coffee-table book, being visually inspiring and modern.

The UK is a creative and cultural melting pot for international designers to develop their creative identity. London Fashion Week is renowned for showing an edgier breed of fashion designer, and for celebrating cutting-edge couture that pushes the boundaries of convention.

Each chapter is devoted to one designer and defines visually how Britishness informs their work, showing final collections, process work, and studio space.
