5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful, well written book!
As I've always been interested in learning how to create my own designs and clothes, I was genuinely pleased when I found this book, which is a great beginners' guide on the subject.
Construction is an essential stage in the creation of a garment, because it allows the 2D design and concept to be translated into the 3D final object; therefore, the right grasp of it is vital to the look and success of the final product. This book takes you step by step through the process of creating your own garment, by carefully and clearly explaining the main stages such as pattern cutting, sizing and grading, blocks and patterns, how to read a design drawing and translate it into blocks and patterns, dart manipulation, slash and spread, and so on. The numerous visual examples perfectly clarify the detailed instructions, so that it's easy to understand how to follow them properly.
What I've found really fascinating is the importance that has been given to the practical, but artistic side of the topic. For example, the whole first section of the book is dedicated to the different kinds of sleeves, collars and pockets which can be realised in order to allow you to successfully translate your ideal design into reality. Many useful tips are then given about fittings and how to alter a pattern by offering a series of badly fitted outfits and explaining how to correct them.
The second section of the book is dedicated to the tools and techniques used to construct and sew the garment either by hand or with the help of a machine. The types of seams and stitches are explored and explained in a very easy and clear way, along with the different techniques which need to be used when working with specific kinds of fabrics and surfaces (like lace or leather).
The whole final section looks at structure and finishing, two other and the book also provides a short history of supported and structured garments, which includes a fantastic section on corsetry.
Even though the instructions are explained in a straightforward way, the general tone of the book is friendly and emphasises that only practice leads to perfection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fashion Design
I wish I had read this in High School before going to college. A very thourough overview of the Fashion industry as well as what to expect in college as a Fashion student. She is British so many of her references are UK based but she does cover the US as well as France in most of her references and additional sources so a good place to start. I reccommend this for anyone looking to go into Fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interested in Fashion Design?
Then read this book first!

Sue Jenkyn Jones provides a good end-to-end overview of the Fashion Design Business. From this book, you will get an good idea of what talents and requirements are needed to be a Fashion Designer.Covered in this book are the business aspects, fashion cycles, textiles, manufacturing, sketching, patternmaking, CAD for designers, colors, sewing, and much MUCH more.

Each topic is explored enough to get slughtly further than the basic concept but not thoroughly covered.I do not think it is possible to completely explore everything on Fashion Design in one book.It is a great introduction to see if it something suitable for yourself or if you are seeking out an overview of the design business. The book is generously packed with graphical examples, sketches, charts, and runway photos.

1-0 out of 5 stars Central Saint Martins wants you to go to college. . .
preferably theirs. This book reveals very little about fashion design or the buisness. It is full of a lot of general information much like you would find in one of those late night tv, or print ads, telling you that you may have what it takes to "become a serious artist." Because of course then you are interested and will pay them money. This book works in much the same way. It is a teaser published by Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Now had they given me this book, say. . . at my orientation, i probably would have appreciated it. However I was rather disappointed when I realized that I had just paid $30 at SFMOMA for an advertisement from CSM.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for fashion design students and fashion lovers
After a serious college business education and a few years in the workforce, I made a courageous decision to enter fashion school. The best decision I've made, but like everyone else I sometimes stress out over what I've gotten myself into.Sue Jenkyn's book is always on my cofee table because it calms me down by clarifying in simple terms what I'm studying and why. This book offers an opportunity to step back and look at the big picture of fashion today.

This book offers a taste of everything - she has a wonderful chart of the fashion calendar and another of the fashion cycle. The info in this book incorporates vital lessons from maybe 10 expensive textbooks I own and have studied. The pictures taken of students in fashion school and sectors of the industry are my favorite.Until you are in fashion school or the industry, this book is the best way for you to see what happens behind closed doors. The more I learn in fashion school, the more familiar and enlightening this book becomes.

4-0 out of 5 stars For people interested in Fashion Design
I purchased this book on amazon.com at a very reasonable price and was very pleased with my purchase. For under $20 this book provided me with the information I was looking for. I recommend it to anyone, especially students interested in majoring in Fashion Design in college. This book explains the basics of what majoring in Fashion Design requires, and goes into describing the what, when, where, and why of what being a Fashion student involves. I really enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Drawing Fashion
I ordered this item because the title said "Fashion Design Drawing Course". Since I am teaching a course of fashion design I thought may be this is the book I should use to teach the class. When I reviewed the book I found out that it was not a course at all. There are pictures of dresses and some elementary sketches, but not a book you will use to teach a class. The fancy title makes you think of a step-by-step book on how to draw fashion, which is just a bunch of pictures put together. If you really want to learn the process of fashion do not buy this book, instead get right book "Fashion Sketchbook" by Bina Abling.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very helpful book...
I was incredibly disappointed in this book. The title is very misleading and there is no instruction or help with how to actually draw fashion designs.I would not recommend this book to a beginner.I'm not certain that it would help the most advanced designers.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great new-be wanna be fashion designer book
This book is excellent to develop creative ideas and skills, and it encourgaes you to develop your own unique styles and to step outside of the box like real fashion designers. Each unit has it's own project for you to go out and do on your own, it is lots of fun. Other people who reviewed this and hated it did not understand it and do not want to be fashion designers because this book teaches the beginner fashion designer a lot, something that you would learn in college! 1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't like this book
I wanted a grading book as additional support material for the grading class I teach, if I didn't already understand how to grade this book would have made no sense.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so helpful;
I remember when I got this book I was shocked at how thin it was.Now that I'm looking at it again,
it's not really that bad, but still much shorter than I thought it would be for a $70 book. Also,
I noticed when I bought this a year ago, it dropped to $50, but I see the price is up again.
Amazon products are like the stock market, which I find amusing.
I was unaware at the timethat I could have returned this product, so I still have it.

Unfortunately there seems to be a lack of grading books available, and the one I really want is
out of print and is going for $4000.I don't understand why Fairchild publication doesn't
publish it again, as it is copyright from 1997.

This book is definitely one to use with an instructor.
One day when I decide to grade something, I will have to update this review.
Until then, I will only make things in a size 6 and rely on tailors to upgrade or downgrade!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very clear guide to grading
This is a very useful reference guide for grading pretty much any type of garment. The way it is written and the step by step illustrations are clear and make the process easy to follow.

This would be useful for both experienced graders as a reference guide and as a learning tool for beginners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grading Techniques Made Simple
Grading Techniques for Fashion Design has been around for many years. In fact this copy is the second addition.. I have both the first and second. It is a very clear and easy to read and follow the details to grade your pattern pieces specifically quickly and without confusion.
I love it, and it will pay for it's self over time.
Please see my video review and I'll show you how I used it and got perfect results.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very pleased customer
This book is not only an introduction to the amateur covering basicgrading techniques on simple garments. It is a complete guide to gradingwomen's clothes covering every possible style for the misses and juniorsize garments. Additional information on grading women and menswear sizegarments is also included.

I am not an expert on the field of gradingand this is why this book by J. Price and B. Zamkoff (who teach in the FIT)has proved to be of great help to me, as it is full of simple step by stepinstructions combined with many many clear diagrams. This is definitely avery practical book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really for professional use
I purchased this book while in my first year at fashion school in the hopes that it would supplement the techniques I was learning in my fashion illustration course. I never used the book, though. The templates and style of fashion illustration used are dated and the proportions were not what we were being taught at school, which rendered the templates unusable for me. Even after I learned how to properly sketch for fashion I couldn't adapt or use the templates because current fashion illustration shows a more elongated, stylized silhouette. I ended up sending this book to my 12-year-old niece, who has shown an interest in fashion design and will probably find it useful for basic construction of fashion silhouettes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for what I needed it for
I ordered this book because I'm a very visual person and with writing a novel, I was trying to figure out exactly what kind of fashions/uniforms I wanted in the book.I can draw portriats, but figures...not so much. The only complaint I have about this book is that the figures are not all the same height. The guys are WAY huger than the women and all the women are not the same. But other than that! It's worked out great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fashion drawing
This book has helped me to fine-tune my illustration skills and get my proporations right.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugly drawings, useless "templates"; try another book
While the tutorials on proportion are somewhat helpful, the drawings, unfortunately, are ugly. The poses lack the edgy and modern look found in other books and among top design houses; they are stiff, and the drape of the fabric is all wrong: it is generalized, and the way it is drawn not only adds nothing to the garment. The folds make it impossible to tell the weight and type of fabric, and in many cases, are not in accordance with the fit or how any fabric would behave.

The details are inconsistent. Some faces are attractive, others unsightly, poorly drawn; some figures have decent poses with some interest, most of the others perch themselves awkwardly on the page, slouching over and oddly angled. As for the idea of using templates to trace, there is nothing in the adult figure section worth tracing, nor is the layout really meant for this, contrary to the title

The section on drawing children in better than the other parts of the book, as are the renderings. They actually manage to capture much of that cheery childhood feel, the cute faces and expressions, and some playful gestures.

Overall, I do not recommend this book, especially when there are so many others that feature great drawings, have helpful tutorials, and generally provide the reader with a solid foundation on fashion design. The Best book on fashion illustration is "Fashion Sketchbook" by Bina Abling. It may cost much more, but it is worth it. If that's too much, keep looking around--this book was a waste of money, and I would not recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive title
If you are hoping to use these templates to draw over for your portfolio, this is NOT the book. If you want a better idea on how to illustrate for your portfolio, this IS the book. This book goes in more depth on fashion illustration than any other book I own. It should be called "Fashion Illustration for Dummies" Great Book! ... Read more

Textile Design

Carol Joyce

(1993)

For fashion and interior designers, artists, and students, here is the most comprehensive guide to the most enduring and functional of the decorative arts. A textile design begins on paper and ends printed on cloth. Every step in that process is covered in this volume: choosing and using art supplies; adapting a design to a repeat pattern; painting separate colorways; creating shading, stippling, batik, and other textural effects. Printing methods, helpful career tips, and a sumptuous array of traditional and contemporary textile designs are included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Textile Design by Carol Joyce
I can highly recomend this book especially for anyone who study textile and pattern design.
Great information clearly represented.

I bought the book used and in comes in great condition , looked like new.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shows you how to create unique textile patterns
This is a great book that shows you how to create unique textile patterns. It geared for those who have an interest in fabric design, and takes the process from original artwork creation through printing for mass production.

The book starts with a brief history and information on the business of textile design. Next it covers tools and supplies as well as where to find reference materials. Over twenty design styles are then explored including floral, patchwork, damask, conversational, chintz, landscape, geometric, ethnic and art deco to name a few.

Methods of design and layout follow. There are no projects, but rather step-by-step guidelines to creating any pattern, including types such as all-over, free-flowing, border, landscape and stripe. Working with color is also discussed. This includes using a color chart, mixing and matching colors, making colored grounds and painting a blotch. Then in preparation for printing you are shown how to put almost any type of design in repeat.

The basics of several design techniques are covered as well. Some include batik, bleaching, flower shading, spattering, India ink woodblock, and photocopy techniques.

The book wraps up with a discussion of the role of computers in textile design and an explanation of the printing process. This is a nice cross between an art book and a textbook with great color photo examples throughout and sound technical instruction. ... Read more

Product Description

When, how and why do clothes become fashion? Fashion is more than mere clothing. It is a moment of invention, a distillation of desire, a reflection of a zeitgeist. It is also a business relying on an intricate network of manufacture, marketing and retail.
Fashion is both medium and message but it does not explain itself. It requires language and images for its global mediation. It develops from the prescience of the designer and is dependent on acceptance by observers and wearers alike.
When Clothes Become Fashion explores the structures and strategies which underlie fashion innovation, how fashion is perceived and the point at which clothing is accepted or rejected as fashion. The book provides a clear theoretical framework for understanding the world of fashion -- its aesthetic premises, plurality of styles, performative impulses, social qualities and economic conditions.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a great guide!
It gives you a run down of all of the patternmaking basics for menswear. The title is a little misleading, though.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book for some people
As a novice sewer I bought this book desparate to get any info about men's casual clothes. There is just not enough info available for this.I assumed that my engineering education could help me work through most any book, but I was wrong.
Unfortunately for me, this book seems to be targeted at those folks with a more advanced understanding of garment construction than I have.If you have experience constructing, altering, or at least understand basic design methods then this book will earn the high price. If your a novice, don't buy this unless you have knowlegable teacher or mentor to help you take full advantage of the technical design methods it demonstrates.

Hope this helps you!

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
I flipped through a couple different editions of this book recently and I must get one for myself.I have books that focus on men's suits and tailoring, but this one addresses sportswear and casual wear, as well as some ethnic styles, like African and Middle Eastern. It focuses more on the design angle than construction, which is desparately needed since commercial pattern companies only carry about 5 different patterns in the men's wear category. At the moment there are more men's costume patterns, but when was the last time you saw Henry the VIII or the Music Man walking down the street? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful fashion reference, for those who can't bear to cut it up
Tom Tierney has produced (at least) five collections for the 1920s, each focussing on a different aspect of clothing. His American Family of the 1920s Paper Dolls in Full Color concentrates on the clothing of ordinary, moderately well-off people. His Roaring Twenties Paper Dolls collection is about costumes for the younger, more fashionable set. This is a collection of haute couture for the period. There are also volumes of Erte fashions (e.g.More Erte: Fashion Paper Dolls of the Twenties.

Tierney's paper doll clothes would be somewhat difficult to cut out, but these books make an excellent fashion reference. Each piece has a clear description, with details of fabric, hair, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars These may be the best paper dolls
I had this paper doll book about 16 years ago when my mother was despairing at my inability to use scissors neatly, and it ended up being very helpful.I had no idea it was still in print. The illustrations are lovely and detailed, and I remember the paper being well-printed, and good quality.Dover books are usually excellent.Recommended either for the purpose I had it for, or to browse through.Great Fashion Designs of the Victorian Era also had some very nice designs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twenties
Tom Tierney has put together a wonderful set of paper dolls in this book.He has beautifully traced the development of fashion during the course of the twenties.Included are sportswear, elegant daywear, sumptuous evening gowns and a fabulous wedding dress by Worth. My favorites were the fur wrap over a drop waisted dress by Louiseboulanger, a look often seen in photos of film stars of the era, and the Egyptian gown fit for a vamp like Theda Bara.I also like the resemblance of one of the dolls to Mae Murray as it adds a touch of authenticity. ... This book is excellent for students and any one wanting to start up a business in the fashion and creative industries, and even covers the entrepreneurial skills that you actually need to get a job!! It is a really easy to understand, step-by-step guide and is also full of inspiring fashion illustrations and images. The examples and case studies of those that have started their own businesses are very encouraging.
I highly recommend this book - a must have !!

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic information about business and fashion
I bought the book because I already got the two other books in the series. For me, this book provided not much information that I didn't already know somehow. The other two books are much more inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fashion Enterpreneur

Product Description
This text offers a complete picture of the process of individual garment construction following
the exact techniques used in the industry. The unique feature of this book is in the
presentation of each garment as a whole concept. With numerous diagrams and easy-tofollow
instructions, students master the principles of design and flat pattern to create an
individual item of apparel such as a skirt, dress, or jacket. Each chapter begins with the
introduction of a basic sloper and follows with an explanation of the whole production
process making a garment from pattern drafting to garment construction, including
lining, interfacing, and markers. The balance of each chapter covers techniques for altering
separate pattern pieces. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome-few typos
The book is really a great tool to begin learning how to pattern make. The diagrams are very visual and easy to understand once you get going. The sloper method is best for beginners in my opinion.I had Injoo as a teacher for the first of 3 classes that follow this book at University of Cincinnati.

I believe she's working on the 2nd edition. When that comes out don't hesitate to buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is the book i learned patternmaking from... its a wonderful guide and teaches you how to really learn the basics of flat patternmaking but gives you the information to take your pattern skills much further! I have looked at other books for flat pattern making and this one is the best, and has detailed illustrations that are helpful as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I went back and forth on this one.Bought it to learn how to make a Flat Pattern.Half of this book is on construction of each basic pattern (blouse, skirt, pants etc) with minimal variations.Lots of large drawings, very little text. Not for the person who already knows construction techniques. If I were a beginner in sewing I would need more information on construction than this gives. But good instruction on Flat Pattern making if you want to not use half of the book....

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book ever written about pattern-making!
If you read only one book about pattern-making, make this the one! ... Read more

Great Book!!! Just what I was looking for! Anyone getting into the business, new or already in the business, this is a great book to have for references and terms that you don't know! ENJOY!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for perusing
This is actually a review for the 7th edition (Hardcover - Jan 1, 1979)

The quickest way to become textile literate is to dive into this dictionary. It is also good to keep next to your favorite books so you do not have to guess at the occasional workday that they do not take the time to elaborate on.10 minutes into the dictionary and I finally learned that"carbonate" is not some sort of BBQ. Really though professions and avocations require unique terminology of you are going to do it well.

The dictionary has interesting items in the margins such as page 290 there are drafts of regular and irregular satin weaves. There are pictures of reeds and reels. Just about anything that needs a graph to explain is in the margin.

"Definitions of key terms can be fairly extensive, with comprehensive descriptions including details about historic background, geographic references, and uses both past and present."

I highly recommend this dictionary if you work in the fashion or textile industry. I refer to it very regularly and often use it as back-up when writing fabric descriptions in marketing material. The references are up to date and include many branded yarns, manufacturing techniques and fabric finishing terms.
