Book Description
Founded in 1951 by visionary textile designer Armi Ratia and her husband, Viljo, the Marimekko Corporation in Finland not only sparked a revolution in pattern making but also pioneered a new definition of fashion that embraced the entire home environment. This book-the first comprehensive study of Marimekko designs-presents more than one hundred examples of the exuberant Marimekko fashions and home furnishings that gave the company a definitive presence on the world design stage. The book considers the history of the company from its founding through today and examines Marimekko's impact on design in Finland and around the world. The company's most important designers, including Maija Isola and Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, their contributions, and their stylistic development are also discussed. In addition, the book examines Marimekko home and office interiors and how they reflected the lifestyle envisioned in Armi Ratia's broad, radical definition of fashion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a thorough tribute to a design giant
I just saw the last weekend of this show in New York at the Bard Center and it was inspired, to say the least. The book is the next best thing to being there if you are a Marimekko fan. It is a more thorough look at the company than the older title "marimekko phenomenon". The editor of this book, Marianne Aav (also the show's curator) was responsible for the 1998 show/book from the Bard Center on Finnish Modern Design. Marimekko's brave colors, shapes, and graphics are made more powerful, in my mind, by the fact that the final result appears so simple. While I mourn the lack of this in much of today's clothing/textile design, I think that the renewed excitement about Marimekko, and design in general, indicates that this is changing. There is a lot of exciting material coming out of Scandanavia and Finland by young designers right now, but Marimekko's influence on modern design cannot be underestimated. Their vision ranged beyond textiles into architecture as well, which the book illustrates. This exhibit & accompanying book have done a fine job at giving credit where it's due. ... Read more

Book Description
This exuberant collection celebrates the way in which astonishing new textile technology is bringing together fashion, design, engineering, and science. Synthetics are now much more than cheap substitutes for natural fibers: they feel good, perform well, and look out of this world--literally. Smart textiles are no longer a science-fiction fantasy; here are self-cleaning carpets and anti-insomniac microfibers. Engineered textiles combine fabric with glass, ceramics, metal, or carbon to produce lightweight hybrids with incredible properties. Sophisticated finishes, such as silicone coatings and holographic laminates, transform color, texture, and even form. The book is illustrated throughout with the work of leading designers in the USA, Europe, and Japan: Issey Miyake, Donna Karan, Helmut Lang, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garons, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, and many more. A comprehensive reference section includes biographies of artists, makers, and developers; explanations of technical terms; a directory of suppliers; a full bibliography; and information on where to see contemporary textiles. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Techno-riffic
This book was a well thought out and planned introduction to the world of technical/synthetic fabrics. The definitions, classifications, and examples of usage make for an interesting read. Equally exciting are thechapters on engineering, synthetics, and coatings. The designs and photosare avant-garde with references to the top designers who of course are thefirst to try new things. It is well organized and easy to use as areference manual.Techno would be well situated on the bookshelf of everycutting-edge design and production team. However, based on my 15 years ofexperience in the fashion-forward streetwear scene, I would have expectedto find listed the company Decopap Inc of Montreal Canada, which has beenthe leading source of Vinyl coated fabrics to the streetwear, fetish, andtechno crowd for the last 30 years. 5-0 out of 5 stars MASTER OF CHIC
Mr. Kenneth Paul Block finally delivers a spectacular book of his unmistakably vibrant fashion and portrait drawings. Mr. Block studied at The Parsons school of Design and illustrated the work of the most influential fashion designers from about the mid 20th century to the nineties before mediocre photography completely dominated how fashion was communicated to the celebrity obsessed, style challenged, unfocused masses. With seemingly effortless ease, Mr. Block sketched the ever changing mood of fashion from mod to modern, classic to experimental, Paris to Seventh avenue and inspired many generations of fashion enthusiasts in the process. Mr. Block's portraits showcase a few of his favorite ladies, who also happen to be global icons of elegance and chic. Society beauties like Mrs. Paley, Mrs. Guest and Mrs.Kennedy speak of a time when grace, mystery and a certain sense of knowing defined a chic lady.
Included in the book are also several personal, unpublished drawings that speak of Mr. Block's wonderful wit, amazing skill at observation and imagination. To say nothing of his mastery in handling paint, pencil and the utilitarian, lowly magic marker. What Mr. Block did with a marker,is Magic indeed. An essential book celebrating the work of an American Artist with a very special eye. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is the book i learned patternmaking from... its a wonderful guide and teaches you how to really learn the basics of flat patternmaking but gives you the information to take your pattern skills much further! I have looked at other books for flat pattern making and this one is the best, and has detailed illustrations that are helpful as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I went back and forth on this one.Bought it to learn how to make a Flat Pattern.Half of this book is on construction of each basic pattern (blouse, skirt, pants etc) with minimal variations.Lots of large drawings, very little text. Not for the person who already knows construction techniques. If I were a beginner in sewing I would need more information on construction than this gives. But good instruction on Flat Pattern making if you want to not use half of the book....

5-0 out of 5 stars review on fashion design and product development by carr and
I think that the book is excellent in terms of its coverage in the various areas of fashion product development. In fact I can say it is the only book that covers all the relevant areas of fashion product development in a logical fashion. It starts with concept of fashion and design and how it translates all the way through to garment production and marketing. It uses simple language and very practical examples, which will be clearly understood, not only by people working in the garment industry but also by lay persons. It is an excellent book for graduating fashion designers that are seeking jobs in the retail sector. It will give them a true picture of the behind the scenes. It also broaches on areas like hierarchy and the flow of the design process. It will also give a clear guideline to graduates where they want to position themselves in the industry. Overall I cannot find any shortcomings in the book, except it is a little sketchy on the points where garment production takes place abroad in developing nations in the East. More elaboration on this would bring it closer to the real workings of the garment trade today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Informative
I have always been interested in costume design and role playing.Footwear is an area that seems to be the most neglected when attempting to re-create a costume from a past era.For those who strive for accuracy in putting together the perfect historical outfit, or even if you just have an interest in shoes in general, this book fits the bill.Wonderful, colorful photos, a highly readable text detailing the history of the crazy world of footwear--the book covers everything involved with shoes and answers most questions the reader may have. From the grotesque to the mundane, we are presented with styles that run the gamut from shoes of leather and iron (ouch!) to platform soles of 12 inches or more. What is surprising is that some styles are still with us today, modernized but still very recognizable. We also learn the painful lengths that people will go for the sake of fashion.Time has changed nothing in this regard, as we still wobble around on stilleto heels and end up with bunions, corns or worse--but we still look marvelous, darling!!!Seriously, if you love to learn about footwear, like to dress in period attire, or are simply a "shoe freak", don't hesitate to buy this book. You won't be disappointed.
