4-0 out of 5 stars Packed with clever tricks for sewers
This book is a collection of articles from past issues of Threads magazine but that is a good thing because Threads articles are always packed with information, good tips, excellent diagrams and photography and I always feel as though I just learned something. In this book there are a variety of projects all of which offer sewers the opportunity to expand skills, be more creative, and learn. One article shows ways to make unique, designer-looking vests using piecing techniques, applique and trim. Another shows techniques for creating reversible jackets including how to select fabrics and techniques for invisible finishes.

Probably my favorite article includes information and instructions for making clever closures, tabs, loops, etc. that can make a plain shirt or jacket look like an expensive boutique treasure.

I have quite a collection of these Threads books but this one is the one I use most often. ... Read more

The perfect accessory to add a bold splash of color or a noteof drama to almost any outfit, the vest has been around for fourcenturies and still remains one of the most versatile of allgarments. Embellished with embroidery, applique, paint, buttons, beads, ribbons, cording, and more, vests afford all sorts ofopportunities for creative expression, as demonstrated here in 20exquisite step-by-step projects. Ten of these are transformations ofplain store-bought vests into extraordinary customized items; theother ten are based on vests made from scratch, with all basicpatterns included (on enlargeable grids). But if you're moreinterested in the decorative aspects than in sewing your own garments, just about all the methods can be adapted to pre-made vests. Thefourteen-page gallery of distinctive creations by about two dozenartists offers some incredible ideas for vest design and adornment, and the techniques section explores various stitching and paintingmethods as well as pattern transfer, explains construction andfinishing how-tos, and gives ideas for collar, pocket, and fasteningdetails. --Amy Handy ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is one of the better books about corsets. It includes some fabulous pictures of antique corsets and patterns and information about each of them. My only problems with the book is that there aren't all that many corsets in the book (which is reasonable given how big the book would have to be to add more but an overview of the styles of each period, preferably with photographs, would have been good. Particularly since some of the corsets whilst of the time period they represent do not appear to be representative of it.)
My only other problem is that I find some of the corsets quite ugly so whilst they are historically interesting I would not want to reproduce them. Still, this is quite a personal reaction and does not detract from the book too much especially since some of the corsets are quite stunningly attractive. Overall a great book.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm so pleased to find it back in stock!
I took a previous reviewer's advice to not buy the book at an inflated price but wait for it to be in stock and I'm glad I listened. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this book and my only complaint is that it doesn't have fifty more corsets in it! But as valuable as this resource is, it is perfectly reasonable at the retail price, but no more.

While it's a smidge annoying that sizes aren't spelled out for every corset, a little simple math has worked for me because she plots out the finished sizes of the pieces rather than adding seam allowance. :)

For enlarging the patterns, I've been scanning the pages into my computer and tracing the outlines in Photoshop to create vector images and then printing them full scale. This is really great for me because I can make my alterations in the computer and am hoping to build up a fitting library for my favorite patterns.

This book is best paired with a more basic how-to for beginners, but an experienced sewer should have no trouble replicating these corsets.

Now if only she'll come out with an expanded edition...

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Details and Great Pics
This was a gift and I absolutely love it!There are marvelous detailed pictures and great information about when and where the corsets are from. The current collections in which the corsets are kept are also mentioned so if you want to see them in person you can plan a trip accordingly.Gave me some answers to questions I'd had regarding structures over hip areas.Great book, worth buying!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
I purchased numerous books about corsets in order to broaden my understanding of them, and this book definitely fit the bill.It covers historical corsets from numerous different eras, includes pictures and descriptions of the styling and construction techniques, and there are numerous scaled patterns in the book to help you duplicate patterns. It's wonderful and quite inspirational!

4-0 out of 5 stars a great book
I bought this book along with two others and loved it. The patterns are well drawn and the addition of the details on the patterns helpful. I got this book and at ones started to make up the one on the cover. not only was it easy to fallow the pattern and enlarge it, but it being on the graph paper made it much easier on sizing. The graph paper also made it easy to alter of a better fit. I only needed to make one mock up before making the finely corset.
I suggest this book to any experienced seamstress who wishes to make corsets. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Style knitting at it's classic best
Simple Style: 19 Innovative to Traditional Designs with Simple Knitting Techniques (Style series) by Ann Budd from the publisher Interweave Press and want to share my impression of the book.Simple Style has 19 designs and with the possible exception of the Drawstring Bateau by Debbie Newton, the designs are all stylish and fairly simple in design and execution.Although stylish the Bateau looks a little more difficult. If you are looking for a sweater pattern that has enough shaping to keep you from looking like you are wearing your son's hoodie, but not so much that you are scared off by the tailoring this might just be the book for you.

Sweaters often scare us, especially when you consider the amount of time they take and your experience level. There are so many places where things can go wrong. No matter how perfect your gauge swatch, it is possible that the gauge you get in your swatch may vary on the actual garment. Will the completed sweater look good on the wearer? Will the person who receives it actually take care of and wear it?With all that said you still want to make a sweater, so you then pick a pattern or a book of patterns that appeal to you.Simple Style has classic looking sweaters, with simple techniques and a large variety of sizes, from finished size 30 inches or 76 cm. to 50 inches round or 127 cm.

Having a pattern book with many sizes makes it a versatile book because of the amount of use you can potentially get out of it.In addition, the classic patterns will not go out of style quickly. Finally, simple, fitted, fashionable patterns also allow the designer within us to experiment and make changes. This book offers all of that and a great glossary of the techniques used, but if you want a book of really out there patterns this might not be the book for you. You could use these patterns as a stepping stone though.

Disclosure: A review copy of this book was provided by the publisher.

I have many of Ann Budd's knitting books and really like them.Don't think I like this one as much as others I have. But there are several items that I'll probably make.Ann Budd's instructions are easy to follow, and I like the items I have made.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just in time....just what I wanted (and needed) to know!
Having spent (wasted) a lot of time trying to needle felt by hand, I've dreamed of a machine and technique that would speed up the process thereby enabling the creative juices to flow unimpeded. This excellent volume provided the 'just in time' knowledge I was seeking. The various techniques reviewed were described clearly with visual examples provided. The types of available machines with pros and cons of each were really helpful in making selections.Within days of receiving my copy of the book, I had ordered one of the machines through a local sewing center and then within a week, I was doing what I've dreamed about for real!

4-0 out of 5 stars Glad I found this book!
I had been perusing a lot of the other books about felting but this one was exactly what I was looking for.I was specifically seeking a book about machine needle felting versus how to make felt using wet & dry techniques. These photos are great, instructions easy to follow, and the projects are more "mature" in nature (unlike so many other books that focus on silly things).Definitely a good buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have for serious needle felters!
If you want to step up your adventures in needle felting this is the book for you.
Amazingly simple tips that will turn your needle felting into works of art!
If you love this book try anything by Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Knitting Book
This book provides good, detailed directions on how to knit with multiple colors. Melissa Leapman provides wonderful insight into how to select 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-color combinations that will enhance your selected pattern. She provides instructions on how to knit with multiple colored yarns in order to provide th best finished product. In each section of the book, she provides pictures of the color pattern along with the corresponding charts. Overall, I found this book to be informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Co lor theory made easy
Another book that is more than a pattern book is Melissa Leapman's book Color Knitting the Easy Way: Essential Techniques, Perfect Palettes, and Fresh Designs Using Just One Color at a Time the entire front of the book is given over to a discussion of how to choose colors. It is broken into sections that teach color theory and how to choose just two colors, and what to do to add a third, and then a fourth, etc.I have never seen a book explain color theory as well as this.

In addition, Leapman also includes stitch patterns and the project patterns to incorporate them. The book is easy to read and navigate as suggested by the title.I highly recommend this book if you need to add to your library and want to add color work to your knitting.

3-0 out of 5 stars sandiknits
Good for a beginner but not up to the standard of her cable books The projects are not new and many of the stitches can be found elsewhere

4-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the color of knitting
"Color Knitting the Easy Way: Essential Techniques, Perfect Palettes, and Fresh Designs Using Just One Color at a Time" is a handy guide to incorporating color thoughtfully into projects without too much complexity.

Author Melissa Leapman, who has written numerous other advice books on knitting and crocheting, has done a masterful job explaining what colors work with others and, instead of just lecturing, provides several color wheels showing combinations of three to six hues. She then moves on to explain how to work with stripes and slip stitches before explaining the essentials, such as reading abbreviations, understanding knitting charts, a glossary and the basic steps needed to succeed at the craft and create the perfect project.

Her directions are simple and easy to read, with the illustrations working to complement her advice. This is an ideal book for someone looking to step up their projects on a creative level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book on Color Theory
Melissa Leapman is one of my favorite knitting designers. She's now written a book called 'Color Knitting the Easy Way'.

The first part of the book is about understanding color. She talks about color theory including hue, value, saturation, tone, tint and shade. The book is illustrated with several color wheels to demonstrate what she is talking about. She then goes into selecting and combining colors: monochromatic combinations, two-color combinations, three-color combinations, four-color combinations, five-color combinations and six color combinations.

Chapter two is on mastering color knitting techniques using stripes. She discusses knitting in the round, dealing with yarn tails, weaving in to finish and color play. She offers a dictionary of stitch patterns using different techniques that are samples of what can be accomplished by color combinations. Chapter three is on creating color patterns using slip stitches. In this chapter she also offers a wide diversity of knitting stitch patterns. The book also provides several patterns for knitters. The last chapter is on techniques.

I wasn't knocked out by a lot of the patterns though some of them are nice. What is special about this book is the color theory information that will be helpful to any intermediate or advanced knitter who wants to learn more about knitting with color. The stitch dictionary is also useful.I suggest you check out The Essential Guide to Color Knitting Techniques by Margaret Radcliffe. ... More about Peggy than Rudi.
Some nice photos but disappointing if you bought this book to learn about the artist himself.
Very self- appeciating about the author.ugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUTURE SHOCK!
At age 17 I wrote to Rudi Gernreich, imploring him to let me work for him & sending him my own futuristic fashion designs. I never heard back, of course; why would an iconoclast need imput from a teenager? This man prefigured so much that happened in later decades that most of what he did still looks cutting edge today. He saw himself as being a few years ahead of his time. More like a few deades. David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust owes more than a bit to Rudi's unisex designs, up to & including the shaved eyebrows. The look was startling & alien in 1973, imagine how it looked in psychedelic era 60s! Peggy Moffit's book is a godsend, & she is a Pop Icon extraordinaire. The future hasn't been nearly as groovy as Gernreich envisioned, but this book offers a glimpse of what it might have been. He was a true visionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Love of Rudi
I was given this book by my best friend, who thought I would like it.Love it is more like it, this man who I was dying for information on was a genius, artistic, innovative... Truly for those who are fashion mavericks and trend-setters.This book finally brings Rudi to light, by a dear friend of his and is written from an insiders point of view.It also tells the story of an artist trying to create in the commercial world. The topless bathing suit, trompe d'oeil in fashion, ohh and those clever sunglass that are round on one side and square on the other... Not to mention is introduction of PVC and knee socks back in the 60's - all Rudi's.Incredible photography (Peggy Moffat's husband rounded out their collaborative trio as the photographer). This book will inspire as you revel at how Rudi, a master of form and shape, comfort and style, with his deft imagination and sense of style just created movements in fashion that flow through to what you see on the street to the haute couture. He has been underground for so long yet is long overdue for this showing as he has a had a PROFOUND influence on fashion and everyone who sees the book cannot put it down. For a little over $20 it is a steal too. This is a book to cherish and hang out with when you need some inspiration. He is much why the 60's was considered modernist.Incredibly glamourous celeb pics such as the one of Barbara Streisand appear in all her glory as well as pieces on adrongny (wayy ahead of his time) and the rejoicement of one within their own body.Rudi was far far ahead of us all and I believe will become better known as time passes. This is a bittersweet book about Rudi and his muse, Peggy and her husband. Three people with immense imagination that together made it in this world without compromising.Makes a great gift, everyone I have given it to just adores it.Forget all about the vintage designers, he was a driving force in the 60's.He took those terrible frumpy looks and threw them out and looked at women as strong, beautiful creatures as they are and gave them a right to look gorgeous. This book is not about beauty in a conventional sense, it really really sets you free.Afterall, he boldly rejected the mainstream concept of women's old big skirted fashion and started all new styles, ones with his unique perception making stunning and hip fashion accessible to all.Rudi really was a fashion heavy - this remarkable book should not be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars just great
Out of all the books on this subject this was the best.detailed & very helpfull.

5-0 out of 5 stars This could be the best begining airbrush book on the market.
I checked out about 40 airbrush books from the library and this book was by far the best of them all.I was excited about this book from the moment I opened it.It gives an understanding of the art through step by stepinstructions, techniques, and stokes. The prodjects can be easilyaccomplished with a little practice and time. After gaining anunderstanding of simple of strokes and airbrush control, you can make somegreat T-shirts!This book is PERFECT for the begining airbrush artist.Ifyou have an interest in airbrushing, this is the perfect book to find outwhat it's all about.

1-0 out of 5 stars You must be joking!
This book is one of the poorest examples of a step-by-step book I've seen. I happen to be one of the artists included in the portfolio section of the book. The artist who wrote the book is a pen and ink cartoonist, andobviously knows little about the use of an airbrush. The pictures of hiswork are laughable, and the text is cryptic and confusing, containing muchmisinformation. The only reason to buy this book is for the portfoliosection, which contains many pictures of high quality t-shirt artwork. I amembarassed to have my artwork in such a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for beginners.
Have you ever flipped through a airbrush book or been to the Airbrush T-shirt shop and thought how amazingly talented these artists must be.Well I have.I always wondered how much talent and decades of experience these people been through to create such amazing images. This book is excellent for anyone. From the person that sketches pictures in their notebook during a boring lecture to the person who wished he/she can draw like that guy.I am the guy who wished he could draw. This book teaches the basic rules you need to know to start airbrushing in a simple step-by-step manner and includes descriptive color illustrations. It is possible to become a airbrush artist and this book is a great way to start you off. It'seasier than you think. All you have to do is follow the simple rules and have the patience and time to practice.Kai Chen ... The editors at Vogue® Knitting, the most trusted name in the craft, have done it again, creating the most comprehensive guide available to sock knitters! No other book has both information for designing your own socks and such fabulous, never-before-published designer patterns. It includes background on the social and historical development of sock knitting (complete with historical photos), techniques (top-down, bottom-up, many different heel and toe styles), stitch patterns, and socks from a wide variety of ethnic traditions. 1-0 out of 5 stars Not the "ultimate" sock book
I am an accomplished knitter and own just about all of Vogue's knitting books.I've successfully created many items from these books so why would I think that Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Sock Book would be one of the worst knitting books I own?

1) No index - why would Vogue Knitting go to such lengths to write a book with "ultimate" in the title and not include an index? It's a reference book!

2) No up-to-date sock knitting techniques - you can't call yourself "ultimate" if you're only going to show how to knit a sock on DPNs.They should have included knitting on two circulars and the Magic Loop. There are many of us who would rather use those techniques. Also, they went into great detail about gusset heels but very little detail on short row heels and nothing on afterthought heels.

3) As mentioned by other reviewers, several of the patterns had errors.I teach knitting and I'm trying to encourage children and adults to find it fun and use it as a stress buster. Not going to happen with this book. It's obviously not for the new knitter but it should be informative enough for a knitter who has never done socks.Errors in patterns just make it frustrating.

This is not the "ultimate" sock book. When Vogue goes to a second printing, they should change the title. There are other sock knitting books out there that are so much better than this.On the plus side, I was able to use the history part of the book for my classes.Otherwise, it was a waste of my money.Go to the bookstore first and look through it before committing yourself to paying $29.95.

5-0 out of 5 stars In Vogue
I was very impressed with the patterns and instructions in this book.I'd recommend it to anyone looking for more variety of sock patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vogue Knitting The Ultimate Sock Book
This an outstanding book. It starts with the history of socks/stockings and brings the reader up to today and how they've changed. The photos are wonderful and the writing is easy to understand.

I would recommend this book for anyone who really is interested in sock knitting. The book was not awfully expensive and it covers about anything you might want to know about socks. This will always be current for the who wants a simple sock to a very ornate complicated one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to my Collection
As a unrepentant sock book collector I found this book to be very well put together and full of fresh new patterns. Another MUST HAVE for any sock knitter! It's got something for everyone from beginner to expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only one you'll need.
This book is self explanatory and additionally has a great section that speaks about the anatomy of a sock.It gives you detailed history of sock making and the biggest names in the sock industry!Impressive! Not only are the sock patterns attractive they are designed and charted out by some of the best designers. You definitely won't be displeased if you add this one to your knitting library!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent
I'm very satisfacted with the book and with Amazon.com. The main problem to me is that the Amazon don't deliver in Brazil and I had to receive the book from a friend who lives in USA!

4-0 out of 5 stars Full exploration of wardrobe planning, enhancing
This book is not for everyone. However if you are interested in color theory, silouette enhancement and description of fabrics, it is a "go to" book.I have also found it helpful in other areas of study such as watercolors, drawing, and home decor, with transferable knowledge from one area to another. It is not an "of the moment" book, as photos are dated, but has timeless content that can be used again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most detailed style manual ever!
The most informative, detailed, explanatory style guide and wardrobe manual I have read (and I've read them all).Totally recommend this book to anyone obsessed with dressing for themselves and making sense of the information provided in other books to date.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated but wonderful reference
It may say 2002, but it's actually the second printing.1996 is the year and the photos say outdated and are distracting. The information is great, but then again some of it is based on the then current looks and fashion. And in the last month the price has dropped about in half, it must be clearance time, because the book sure needs a new look. The book in the intro. mentions an "instructor book", so where is that?
I saw Judith in a sewing seminar, and thought that she really knows her stuff, and the book is well defined and divided in very concise chapters.
I've always wanted to find more about her, she was an inspiration, a reference point. But did I remember all the the information from her seminar? In wanting the book, making sure I didn't miss anything, giving myself a gift for Christmas.Well, I bought the book and feel ripped off.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the only personal color advice that works
Rasband says personal color differences are so subtle that people needn't limit themselves and reminds that coloring is relative and appears to changedepending on setting and does change with age and health. She then goes on to give detailed advice, from color theory, on how to alter the appearance of a color that is difficult for you to wear by, for example, using the Law of Areas. That's really what I want to know - how to wear whatever color I want by experimenting with the amount of it and the colors juxtaposed with it and, yes, an adjustment to my makeup colors or intensity.

The book is formatted as a course workbook and thoroughly covers everything in one volume, surpassing my two shelves worth of wardrobe books. In fact, I am going to purge a number of confusing and misleading volumes in favor of referring to this one and plan to check Rasband first before I decide to read yet another wardrobe book. If you only buy one, I would start with this one.

She uses a yin yang system of analysis of fashion "types" and garment details, much like Kibbe's Metamorphosis. They also seem to break down according to ingenue versions and more mature versions of the same sort of type. Superior and unique method of editing your closet and analyzing as you do. Scaling Down is better on why you really don't need to be afraid to let go of too much but Rasband is better on figuring out what little you do need and how to decide what goes. Covers capsule wardrobe ("clothing clusters"), borrowing from other types a la Emily Cho whom she credits (yes, I have those books, too), body builds including pregnancy, closet arrangement, wardrobe care, analysis of print fabrics and texture. Much is presented in detailed charts and throughout she anticipates your questions and answers them.

Very much a "just the facts, Ma'am" pragmatic kind of approach. This is the antithesis of those shmaltzy books that try to prop your failing ego with little pep talks and exhortation or that chide you for letting yourself get out of hand. I didn't feel psychologized. She assumes no knowledge on your part and proceeds to tell you everything useful in a straightforward, respectful manner with no condescension or imperiousness. She explains and justifies her points throughout and does not ask you to take her word on faith. It is utterly factual and is about the information and how you can apply it and not about her or trying to be like her.

Though this is the older edition, I found most of the photo illustrations still appealing and wearable. Ignore the atypical mannish outfit on the cover. ... Read more

Product Description
An illustrated survey of the sari, the unique south Asian textile tradition. Covering the entire Indian subcontinent and including remote and restricted tribal areas such as the north-east, it provides analysis of thousands of sari types from different cultures around India. The simplicity of the sari - an untailored length of cloth measuring between four and nine metres long by approximately one metre wide - is set against a wide variety of fabrics, colours, patterns and draping styles. There are diverse regional traditions of colour, pattern and weave, analyzed here through a six-fold division of the Indian sub-continent: the West, the East, the North-East and the Himalayas, the Eastern Deccan, the South and the Western Deccan. Each section is accompanied by a display of photographed sari types. There is a detailed analysis of sari design, giving a guide to the symbols, patterns and motifs used, together with their origins and information about how they have evolved. Many rare and unusual saris are featured. There are translations given of Indian words and concepts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for a start
This is a good started book. When I was first researching India and the place of saris in Indian culture, this was a wonderful big picture view of the place of saris in Indian culture. It's lovely and well-written.

As I got to know more about saris, I found that this wasn't a source book. It's a little too high level to serve as a concrete basis if you are looking for historic information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great gift book!
I got this for my mother as a Christmas gift -- she is interested in Indian textiles and techniques, so this made the perfect gift. In fact, I would recommend this as a neat "coffee table gift" book for your trendy or artistic friends as it is sure to be unique. I have no idea of textiles, but really liked the way the book was laid out. Of course, it is a niche topic. ... Read more
