Product Description
Tailoring comprises the techniques applied for the development and construction of a
tailored outfit, ranging from the simplest techniques used in the industry for mass production
of tailored suits to the most refined techniques of haute couture. The aim of this text
is to present the techniques of tailoring from a professional point of view. It will cover
traditional and contemporary design and construction methods for tailored garments
from ready-to-wear to couture details. A history of tailoring as a profession as well as
profiles of contemporary designers known for their tailored garments will place the book
in a professional context. A supplementary CD-ROM will include live demonstrations of all
the tailoring techniques covered in the chapters. Students will learn that tailoring is more
than a skill of home sewers, but rather a design method they can benefit from throughout

5-0 out of 5 stars Why not 5 stars????
See my review of Pattern and Palette Sourcebook 2: A Complete Guide to Choosing the Perfect Color and Pattern in Design by Heidi Arrizabala.....
I do agree that the CD is not that helpful, but the information of color combination of this book (and its newest edition) is priceless!!!
I highly recommend this book if you are looking for beautiful color pallets.... if you are a designers, artist, illustrator, you DO NOT NEED A CD OR A 'WELL DESIGNED" book (although I like its design! If you are creative in any matter and want to create your own designs, there is no need for vectors or to see this book as "page after page of patterns repeated"... learn to read between the lines people..... Maybe this book needs a change of name so it is referred to as a COLOR PALLETE REFERENCE book.... just be patient and follow the color formulations given in the book! Highly recommended!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Wasted Purchase
I have to share the same sentiments with a few of the other reviewers. Typically, when a CD-ROM comes with a book of this nature, one would expect the visual content (in this case the patterns displayed in this book) to be available on the disc itself. Not the case here, which I thought was a bit deceiving. It would have been much smarter (and more practical for the end user) for the book author to have provided the patterns as EPS files for use in a vector based software application such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. Otherwise what good is it to look at these patterns when you can't easily recreate them?

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk
First of all the content on the CD is not resuable in anyway. It comes with a semi-functional interactive CD that will allow you to print patterns but they are all locked Flash files so you can not use them in illustrator or in any other program.

The book itself is page after page of repeated patterns with slight color adjustment. The patterns are uninspired and dated. I would not recommend this book to anyone if I could give it negative stars i would.

5-0 out of 5 stars Georgeous patterns you can change color and printout
This book is filled with beautiful and diverse patters, some really modern and clean, others more ornate and traditional. The best part is the CD lets you change the colors in the patterns and then print them out for you to use. It's great for everything from professional design jobs to scrapbooking and personal projects. ... Read more

Product Description
"I can think of no recent book about traditional crafts which has delighted me more than Joel Monture's Complete Guide to Traditional Native American Beadwork. All too often, books of this nature are either as boring as a repair manual, or obscure and inaccurate. Monture's triumph is that his book is not only the best and most complete book about virtually every aspect of Native American beadwork tools, materials, styles and methods, it is also clear, interesting reading. "Written from the point of view of a Native master craftsman who is also a gifted teacher, and accompanied by striking full-color photos, it can serve as either a beginning point or a lifelong reference tool. I am confident that Monture's book will bring him wide praise, not only from beadworkers, but also from any person who delights in knowing more about the meaning and the history of an indigenous artform which is finally attracting the sort of critical attention and informed appreciation it deserves." —Joseph Bruchac, author of Keepers of the Earth Includes all the basic stitches and designs Contains a special section on natural tanning methods Extensive glossary Full-color photos of authentic Native American beadwork ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Native American Beadwork & more!
This is a great book for those looking for authentic beadwork styles. The author covers a broad range of styles. He also discusses different backgrounds and even provides instruction for hide tanning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Preserving tribal styles and techniques
The author, Joel Monture, is a professor of traditional arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe.His thorough textbook documents not only native American beadwork techniques, but the tedious methods of leather preparation that are necessary prior to beading.

A San Antonio local artisan, Ken Yanez, is familiar with this process of scraping, lacing and brain-tanning leather.Ken befriended a native American while in the Marines and accompanied him home to the reservation during military leaves. There, an elder showed Ken some magnificent, old beadwork.Ken was surprised to learn that the tribal youth showed little interest, including his friend.Although Ken doesn't have sufficient native American ancestry to qualify for tribal membership, he made a personal commitment to learn these techniques.Ken's projects are authentically produced but cannot be labeled as "Indian made."

Why don't tribal youth show more interest in native American craft?Preparation for beading in the native American tradition, such as brain-tanning of hides, is labor intensive, although the results are buttery-soft, making the leather pliable for decorative beading and quilling.Because of the work and time involved, few of today's tribal youth want to perpetuate the craft."Time" has become "money," so if there is interest in doing crafts in the classical tradition, it's to make some money.Ken will attest to the amount of time it took to make a cradle board for his son.He certainly couldn't sell it for a price to equal the months that he put into the project.

To offset the lack of interest in fine craft, author Joel Monture has captured the steps needed to recreate the obvious beauty inherent in native American beadwork. The book features 43 color plates of beadwork, including the styles of many North American tribes.

In one respect, Joel is preserving an anthropological record of the personal ornamentation used by various tribes by showing us the differences and similarities of style. To lose these tribal identifiers results in cultural homogeny and a disconnect with our human history.Joel's sense of history has led him to capture these artistic techniques before they are lost.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's worth looking at.
I just got this book along with two others the other night. Haven't had the chance yet to read it completely yet. Having scanned it a bit though, I would say the section with color photos is good, particularly if you're a crafter looking for patterns. The text I've read up to this point is good and worth reading. I've had a little bit of a hard time with some of the diagarms though, particularly some of the ones dealing with hides and hide tanning. Not that I'm looking to tan hides right now, but I thought it would still be interesting to understand the process. Several of the stitch diagrams are easier to follow though. There are black and white photos as well in this book. Most came out fine, but I think a there are a few that must have had poor lighting.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book
i love indian art, traditional and contemporary. i have a small collection of northwest and inuit art.i have studied the histories of several nations.but i am not an indian.no matter how much study i may devote to indian arts and history, i will never be an indian, i will never have the intimate knowledge that comes from growing up in a culture. i would never presume to tell any member of any indian nation that his or her work was not 'traditional.'

and what, exactly, is tradtional?louise keyser, a washoe who died in 1925, created a new form of basket in the 1890s that was based on her tradition and her knowledge of other nations' traditions.this is what artists do--take what they know, build on it, and create new forms.after all, indians happily absorbed european beads into their 'traditions.'

i design my own knits, embroideries and beadwork.this book offers stunning photos and a good section on traditional color use which together give me a good starting point for my own creations and which is why i rate this book at five stars.

note on nomenclature:the indians i have known were not concerned about indian/native american.i object to native american since the indians migrated (IMmigrated) here just as everyone else has, albeit a few thousand years earlier.if i have offended any indian/native american by this use, i apologize. if a european doesn't like it, well....

4-0 out of 5 stars Native Beadwork from a Native perspective
How interesting that the beadwork book chosen as more "authentic" by some here was written by a European from Germany! Mr. Monture is Six Nations (Mohawk, I believe) from New York State, & has taught Native Arts at the American Indian Arts Institute (a college *for* Native artists) for some years.

Again, its more about where you're from. Some could say it is 'romantized', as it doesn't go into how much work it actually is to produce hides, that its smelly, you need a lot of guidance & practice, etc.

Different tribes use different techniques, & this book is definitely written from a more northeastern tradition, perhaps difficult to appreciate as it is less known outside these communities. (Plains beadwork is usually what the mainstream usually recognizes as 'authentic'.)

That said, one probably needs a little background to get the most from this book. I do wish there was more discussion on color use and Great Lakes pattern development, but these are also skills which are best honed by doing. I enjoyed this book, which does pack a lot of information into relatively little space. The construction techniques are excellent! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty & Practical
this book has some lovely gift ideas and several items I would wear myself. I was looking for more specific instruction on how to incorporate the beads into the knitting; although there was some explanation I could have used more details on all the specific techniques. Overall I'm glad I bought it. Can't wait to try some of these patterns out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book
I ordered this book about a week ago, and I love it.I think the shawls, wraps, etc are lovely. My daughters would love several of the patterns to wear. There are a couple of modern designs like a beaded shrug and a top that is just a wrap around the bust line perfect to fit over a tight fitting tee. Then there are some more formal designs that would be great for Sunday such as a lace shawl with beaded edge and a little pearl edged capelet. Then there are some older "mother in law" type designs like a pull over cabled and beaded poncho, and a large shawl wrap, and a double breasted capelet.Anyway, I have several projects I want to try out of this book and I now know how to bead and knit thanks to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine addition to any knitting library.
Scarlet Taylor's KNIT WITH BEADS: STUNNING SHAWLS & WRAPS is for knitters who want to embellish a knitted product with something different. The author's a knitwear designer who was inspired to adorn her own knitting from the offerings of a local bead shop: her creative shawls and wraps offer up something quite different from the usual knitter's guide, making KNIT WITH BEADS a fine addition to any knitting library.

A fantastic book.A great find and Frances Grimble is a God send to her profession.

Very impressive collection.

Director wants one of everything!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Addition
Though this book doesn't include patterns for corsets, this book is extremely helpful in the other articles of clothing our great great grandmothers wore.It is important regardless of your sewing ability to take your time constructing garments out of this book. It would be wise to create a muslin of the garment to be constructed before you start slicing into your fashion fabric.Because most, if not all of us haven't been corseted since our tween years, our bodies will be in a more natural state, making corsets and fabricating muslins or proto types required for the desired look and fit.Take the time to read the directions and to buy butcher paper or the like to draft the patterns since the weave will shift and sway if you attempt to draft the pattern directly on fabric. This book along with your study in Victorian culture will make all of us modern woman thankful for the woman's suffrage movement and how knit fabric fostered that spirit of feminine freedom.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Edwardian Modiste
This book is exactually what I need for my costuming information. The book is excelent in illiustrations and patterns.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellant, if difficult
As a director this was an excellant resource book, however my seamstresses found it next to impossible to figure out the patterns. It would take someone quite comfortable in making patterns. The directions are there and could be worked out with enough effort and trial.Still, as a resource it's great and was quite useful. The designs and details alone are worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The young designers beginning tool
Got it as a gift and now have bought some for others gifts. Prabably good from age 8 to 14. Had to buy my other daughter one as well. I would have loved this as a kid.

4-0 out of 5 stars A big hit with preteen
I bought this as a gift for my daughter in 5th grade. She spent the rest of the day designing outfits and coloring them. She loves fashion and crafts so this was a natural. The clothes have a lot of variety and the booklet gives ideas to help spur creativity. I wish they had more model shapes to vary the person but overall a big hit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally worth every penny!
my 10 year old daughter LOVES this set!she draws with it all the time.my 7 year old son watches her and just asked me if they make design studios with boy stuff!I would not recommend this for any one under age 10 as the cling-ons can by tricky and the inking can be frustrating for younger ones.my daughter, thankfully, is old and able enough to do it on her own.If she wasn't this would be a major headache for mama!

4-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
I ordered this set after receiving an amazon gift card for my birthday. I have used Klutz craft kits before and have been very pleased with them, this is my favorite! I had seen Project Runway Design Sets before, and decided to try this one out, it is very easy to use and create your own styles and designs. It is very easy to create other fashions from designing free-hand as well. I love that it comes with plenty of tracing paper, i have made so many designs and i still have much more paper. And it is very easy to make your own paper from art tracing paper. I was pleasantly surprised when it came with coloring pencils and a book. It is very fun and easy to use. I am very pleased with this craft kit, and will be purchasing more Klutz craft kits very soon.

2-0 out of 5 stars parts missing, traces of used pencils?!
It's very surprising to hear my girl said, "Dad, this one hss been opened!".Some stencil paper are missing, and there are powders inside the package, looks like someone had use it...Which makes my girl very upset, I've to explain this one must be a defect in production, and of course took her to search from town to town to find a new one.If it's too much of trouble to mail it back for a return, I will definitely do so and shout out loud.I pay for a new item, shouldn't get anything less than that.

P.S. 2 stars for the product itself really brings fun to my girl, when we finally found one in tact. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!
I have made several of the necklaces from this book and have received raves everytime I wear them.It takes a little effort to understand some of her terms for beads but once you get past that, the instructions are excellent. These are beautiful, wearable necklaces, mainly based on peyote, that take time to make but are worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative Beaded Jewellery Techniques
This book is really unique as far as the beading techniques go. The written instructions looked rather daunting at first but were fairly easy to follow once you get started. Good for advanced beaders to add to their beading repertoire!

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative Beaded Jewelry is absolutely a perfect title.
I was looking for something new and different. When I received my book I found that it is exactly that. Beautifully different beaded jewelrytechnique than what I have been doing. Good diagrams and wonderful coloredpictures. This is an English translation from Dutch. Therefore you might beconfused at first with the size of the beads but I just go with what I haveand try to follow accordingly. I don't think it will be a problem for mostbeaders. Non-beading friends that have seen the book love the jewelrydisplayed in the pictures. Directions for all shown are provided. I believethis will keep me in beading heaven for quiet some time. The technique isversatile and the jewelry looks dressy and expensive. Various beads andsizes can be used. If you like to be creative then don't miss theopportunity with what you can bead from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One-of-a-kind beadwork idea book
This is an excellent book for medium to advanced seed beaders who are looking for more than another peyote pattern. The author opens up completely new directions by using seed beads with bugle & cut beads, crystals and other small decorative beads to create exceptionally uniquetubular beadwork. The techniques are simple, the results are beautiful andstunning.I recall someone mentioning to me that this book is an Englishtranslation of Dutch, and there are a few minor awkward grammar remnantsbut nothing that would inhibit a beader from figuring out how to do thetechniques.I give this book a high rating because it is the seminal workon the "Dutch spiral" use of seed beads and inspires you to moveyour own seed beadwork in a new direction. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Really good news
When I bought this book I was somehow doubting if it would be necessary and useful. I have the book on men's wear from Roberto Cabrera already and so i was not sure if there would be any interesting news in this one. But there are! After general information on the pattern, ironing and sewing, which are absolutely the same as in the guide for men's wear, the chapters on women's wear start. The techniques show how to sew several classical women's garments, like a classical skirt, two kinds of different jackets and women's trousers. All descriptions are in the familliar detailled way and there is also good hints and alterations for special figures like what jacket type to use with a bigger bust or which trousers for a flat derriere. Although the book is very detailled I don't think it's for total beginners but for tailors and homesewers with basic information on sewing this is a great book to enter the practical knowledge of high standards on fine bespoke garments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tailoring guide
This is a comprehensive book on women's tailoring.. Has lots of pictures and diagrams to help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Guide to Ladies' Classic Tailoring
Along with it's companion on classic tailor for men's wear, this book is absolutely essential reading, for it is an absolute classic in terms of the way the book deals step-by-step with the practical making up of a coat and skirt.

It must be clarified that it is complete and utter nonsense that the methods for tailoring women's coats described here is identical to the companion men's tailoring book. Whoever thinks that has clearly neither read this book, nor it's companion. The techniques outlined are totally different, from the shape of the canvas, the panels being canvassed or mounted/underlayed, and even the layers forming the chest piece. There are even sections dealing with a coat with separately cut skirt, as well as discussions about paneled jackets. Obviously, neither of these are found in the men's tailoring edition. The details on how to construct a coat, or skirt are far beyond the instructions found inside a commercial pattern. Yes, the skirt is a plain tailor's skirt rather than a fancier dressmaker's skirt, but this is what the book is about: classic custom/bespoke tailoring a skirt as part of a suit, not couture style dressmaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is A Sequel To And An Expansion Of Our Earlier Work
".....THIS BOOK IS A SEQUEL TO AND AN EXPANSION OF OUR EARLIER WORK, Classic Tailoring Techniques: A Construction Guide for Men's Wear.

Since women's tailoring is an adaptation of an art which originally belonged exclusively to men's wear, many construction procedures outlined in our first book are repeated here with only slight adjustments --- pockets, lapels, vents, etc....."
[from the book of preface by Patricia Flaherty Meyers]

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Traditional Tailoring Techniques
I found this book and the men's wear companion to be extremely informative and one of the best guides around for learning how to create a tailored garment using the traditional techniques as opposed to the "speed" tailoring that is so popular. There are differences in men's and women's jackets which each book illustrates respectively. Also, the women's book includes chapters on skirts and pants. My disappointment is that neither book included instruction on the various types of coats and raincoats with zip/button-out linings.Coats are not just long jackets; there are differences in construction techniques.I also think that there should have been a little more clarification of some things. For instance, it took me a while to realize that silk-finished thread was actually Mettler's silk-finish cotton thread and not a type of silk thread.A search of the internet provided the answer.Minor gripes in comparison to the knowledge to be gained therein by those who want to make couture-quality garments. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This excellent book is both instructional and inspiring. The author teaches crafting techniques in a very clear, straightforward way that makes you feel quite confident in your abilities, and produces great results. Her take on design is modern, fun and funky. The pictures inside are bold and bright and detailed so you're never confused about what to do next or how a project should turn out.You will love this book.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful printing book
Jennifer Cooke has a signature style that I have admired for a long time. This book has great projects and patterns- I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in fun methods of hand printing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book has so many great ideas in it!It's the perfect inspiration.Highly Recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great craft book!
Design Your Own Tees would make a creative addition to an established craft library, is a wonderful gift idea, and is also a great introduction for beginning crafters. The inviting, brightly colored contents sets the stage for what the book is like - bold, simple, and clear.

Here's what I love about it:
-easy to follow set-up, clean aesthetic, and alluring colors
-projects based on texture, pattern, and color
-step-by-step instructions for each project, as well as the necessary illustrations and pictures to help you along
-a glossary and resources section for more inspiration
-a good range of projects - some easy to do with tools on hand, others requiring a spectrum of craft supplies
-price range in the projects fits all budgets

For the novice, the directions are very thorough and many of the projects are simple. Those with more experience will find new ideas, either visual or in technique, for designing.

I especially like the tips and variations (like how to repair your broken printing potato).Just reading these made me feel more confident in crafting.

For the novice crafter intimidated by silkscreening (me!), Design Your Own Tees makes it very accessible.Read the well-thought out instructions thoroughly before you begin your project. It's like using a wonderful but intensive recipe - reading the directions before you start pretty much guarantees success, but try to read as you cook and things get a little rough around the edges. But that might be fun too - the author might actually encourage that kind of experimentation!

Long live handmade indeed!

Elevating silk painting to a high art form, this lushlyillustrated book turns simple scarf decoration on its head. Some ofthe painted designs are so intricately detailed they look almost likephotographs; others resemble glorious watercolor paintings. Techniquesand tools are clearly explained, as are working with color andexploring design ideas. Be forewarned, however: a good portion of thebook is devoted to advanced techniques, so the novice silk painter maynot be able to jump right in. But for those with some priorexperience, this volume really shines as a source of instruction andinspiration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to have
I hope this book will be back in print. It is beautifully illustrated and shows more than the standard silk painting techniques. The author introduces us, step-by-step, to various Asian techniques, which are really interesting. This book is written for beginning and advanced silkpainters, so she also discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various dyes, waxes and resists, how to use them on various silks, and which tools (both Western and Asian) work best -- accompanied by lots of photographs so that you know what she is talking about.
It's a book worth having.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moyer's two books are the best available on silk painting
This is Moyer's second book. You need to understand her first book well before getting this one.But then DEFINITELY get it. Several other silk painting authors have followed a good first book with terrible 2nd and3rd ones. That is certainly not true of Moyer. This book is every bit asexcellent as her wonderful first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Just Keeps Working
This book contains a lot of basic, hands-on info on equipment and practical aspects of silk painting technique. What I have noticed most, isthat everytime I go back to this book as my skill and experience increase,I grasp and learn more. Things I didn't pick up at all on from my earlierreadings suddenly become real and make sense. This book concentratesheavily on wax, gutta and screen printing techniques. Roketsu-zome andalcohol techniques are covered in a very step-by-step, practical way. Thereis a lot of surface design, as well as garment design info. If you areinterested in block printing, bleach discharge, or shibori, you would dobetter to choose another title. Complex Cloth by Dunneworld is anotherfabulous textile book that covers almost every technique. Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Number Two Book of Silk Painters

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book. Lots of deatils!
I have been looking for a book that really helps me understand the "grading" process to paper patterns. I have found the book. I bought this book on accident, and I have still not been sad about it yet. It is a wonderful book filled with great ideas, and lots of illustrations to help you understand the process.
This book is not going to teach you how to pattern a costume, but this helps you adjust your design to different sizes for mass production. So if you are looking how to make patterns this is not the book, it is for someone with some training, or understanding of paper pattern drafting.
