1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't like this book
I wanted a grading book as additional support material for the grading class I teach, if I didn't already understand how to grade this book would have made no sense.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so helpful;
I remember when I got this book I was shocked at how thin it was.Now that I'm looking at it again,
it's not really that bad, but still much shorter than I thought it would be for a $70 book. Also,
I noticed when I bought this a year ago, it dropped to $50, but I see the price is up again.
Amazon products are like the stock market, which I find amusing.
I was unaware at the timethat I could have returned this product, so I still have it.

Unfortunately there seems to be a lack of grading books available, and the one I really want is
out of print and is going for $4000.I don't understand why Fairchild publication doesn't
publish it again, as it is copyright from 1997.

This book is definitely one to use with an instructor.
One day when I decide to grade something, I will have to update this review.
Until then, I will only make things in a size 6 and rely on tailors to upgrade or downgrade!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very clear guide to grading
This is a very useful reference guide for grading pretty much any type of garment. The way it is written and the step by step illustrations are clear and make the process easy to follow.

This would be useful for both experienced graders as a reference guide and as a learning tool for beginners.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grading Techniques Made Simple
Grading Techniques for Fashion Design has been around for many years. In fact this copy is the second addition.. I have both the first and second. It is a very clear and easy to read and follow the details to grade your pattern pieces specifically quickly and without confusion.
I love it, and it will pay for it's self over time.
Please see my video review and I'll show you how I used it and got perfect results.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very pleased customer
This book is not only an introduction to the amateur covering basicgrading techniques on simple garments. It is a complete guide to gradingwomen's clothes covering every possible style for the misses and juniorsize garments. Additional information on grading women and menswear sizegarments is also included.

I am not an expert on the field of gradingand this is why this book by J. Price and B. Zamkoff (who teach in the FIT)has proved to be of great help to me, as it is full of simple step by stepinstructions combined with many many clear diagrams. This is definitely avery practical book.

The book comprises: Part1: A STUDY OF GRADING,including, types of grade, grading machines, computer grading, a guide togood grading, using the grading charts, grading chart etc. Part 2: GRADINGBASIC DESIGNS, including, from bodice, back bodice with shoulder darts, back bodice with neck dart, torso, straight skirt, pants, set-in sleeve, collars, men's wear shirt Part 3: GRADING INTERMEDIATE DESIGNS, including, shawl collar, chemise dress, bodice and yoke, bodice and midriff, frontprincess bodice, back princess bodice, six gore skirt, circle skirt, sarongskirt, skirt with variations Part 4: GRADING ADVANCED DESIGNS, including, front kimono sleeves, back kimono sleeves, kimono raglan sleeve, squarearmhole, front gusset sleeve, back gusset sleeve, set-in raglan sleeve, princess bodice and sleeve-in-one, dropped shoulder sleeve, big shirtdolman sleeve Part 5: GRADING CREATIVE DESIGNS, including, halter bodice, assymetrical bodice, bustier, cowl neckline bodice, semi-fitted jumper, batwing sleeve with surplice bodice and peplum Part 6: ADDITIONAL DESIGNSFOR GRADING, including, from bodice with shoulder and waistline dart, armhole princess line bodice, front bodice with multiple darts or pleat,two-piece sleeve, puff sleeve, house gusset, shirtwaist sleeve with frenchcuff bishop sleeve with cuff bell sleeve with facing, shirt pocket, notchcollar, cape, flared sleeve, cap sleeve, hood, skirt with circular flounceand shaped waistband, flared dress, culottes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, easy to follow and inspirational!
I am thrilled I bought Fashion Computing. The visuals, techniques and exercises are incredibly easy to follow.

I urgently needed a book that got me up to speed very quickly with the basics of drawing flats using Illustrator and CorelDraw.

I have now started working through the Photoshop exercises to create my fashion presentations - this book makes it all so simple.

I love the way the book presents just the essential techniques and tools of the software and gets straight to the point. It is full of inspiring fashion illustrations, flats and presentation work. This book is one I will continue to use as a reference and inspiration! Well worth the money!

1-0 out of 5 stars worst book for fashion design using photoshop
This book was a huge disappointment. I am so lucky I purchased a different book to teach me Illustrator (Creative Fashion Design with Illustrator by Kevin Tallon). Tallons book actually has extensive step by step tutorials where Sandra Burke simply skims over her exercises. Many of her exercises don't even work corrently. One could never master Photoshop or Illustrator using this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fashion Computing: Design Techniques and CAD
Out of the 4 books that I have read so far teaching Adobe Illustrator this is the best - my graphics have improved immensely in the short time that I started using this book (and I'm only a third of the way through the book).

The only downside is that with the update in Illustrator (CS 3) some of the instructions for Illustrator do not work and I have had to search through the Illustrator Help menus to download updated instructions.

So the book needs a little updating, but generally I would recommend this book over others so far.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good guidline for beginner
I have started using Illustrator software recently and this book have served a good support for flat sketching the garments for women, men and kidswear. Is also gives tips to prepare portfolio, but you already should know basics of how to use Illustrator programme. It is nicely illustrated book and one can get ideas. But again its a basic book and does not cover all the aspects of flat sketching.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and highly informative - excellent for fashion students and the fashion industry!
Great book! Even if you are a complete beginner you will find this book an informative and useful resource. It gets you up and running quickly with really simple, step-by-step, illustrated techniques for fashion computing using current software.

In my fashion design studio, we predominatly use CorelDraw, Illustrator and Photoshop, and found this book informative for each of these packages. It covers the basics - how to create flat drawings from vests, skirts, shirts, dresses to pants, and then moves on to producing mood and design boards, visualizing your design ideas using Photoshop. The section on creating a digital portfolio is also vital in todays digital world. Plus it covers womenswear, menswear and childrenswear.

It is well illustrated with great examples of flats, illustrations and fashion presentations from illustrators and designers in the fashion industry and from top fashion schools and universities globally.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thought it would be better
I got this book for a digital surface design class that I am taking. I thought that it would be a really cool book and I had actually flipped through it once. Yet when I got it, I was a little dissapointed. The author does not carry her thoughts well from one paragraph to another. I feel like she uses big words that she might not necessarily understand completely...oh and there is a missing page :(

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gift ....
My girlfriend's daughter is a fashion-designer-hopeful and she thought this was a wonderful book and keeps it with her almost all the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I was doing a sewing course and I ordered this book to start learning how to sketch my ideas for skirt and blouse designs. Easy to follow illustrations and no frills instructions make me rate this book very highly. I am a beginner with no design experience and very little aptitude for drawing. However I was able to use this book and started sketching basic designs in no time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not current in drawing style.
I bought this book a while back based on the stars and reviews but was actually really disappointed. Why? If you go to art schools that push fashion design as a major that work with actual major clothing labels... the drawings you see being cranked out of the top schools do not look like this.I actually recommend Contemporary Fashion Illustration Techniques by Naoki Watanabe.I had a chance to actually look at it at the art store down the street from my art school which is cranking out fashion designers for the actual job market.

I teach drawing to students between 3rd grade on up to high school.I have been buying books to expose my students to the various art industries and what they are looking for now so they can get themselves a head start if they so choose such careers later in their lives. This book was perfect and great when if first came out, but things have changed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Fashion Drawing Guide
My daughter has an interest in Fashion Design. She has been sketching her own clothing designs since she was 8yrs old.Now she's almost 15 and this book has helped her to understand some of the basics. If I hadn't been able to view a few of the pages before purchasing, chances are I probably wouldn't have choose this book... But I'm glad I did.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Jazmine
i will continue to assist my Grand Daughter with her dreams...this book should be a great resource for her.

3-0 out of 5 stars Drawing Fashion
I ordered this item because the title said "Fashion Design Drawing Course". Since I am teaching a course of fashion design I thought may be this is the book I should use to teach the class. When I reviewed the book I found out that it was not a course at all. There are pictures of dresses and some elementary sketches, but not a book you will use to teach a class. The fancy title makes you think of a step-by-step book on how to draw fashion, which is just a bunch of pictures put together. If you really want to learn the process of fashion do not buy this book, instead get right book "Fashion Sketchbook" by Bina Abling.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very helpful book...
I was incredibly disappointed in this book. The title is very misleading and there is no instruction or help with how to actually draw fashion designs.I would not recommend this book to a beginner.I'm not certain that it would help the most advanced designers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expec...
Well this book its awesome, really works about yor creativity and explore many ways to become a Designer....

5-0 out of 5 stars a great new-be wanna be fashion designer book
This book is excellent to develop creative ideas and skills, and it encourgaes you to develop your own unique styles and to step outside of the box like real fashion designers. Each unit has it's own project for you to go out and do on your own, it is lots of fun. Other people who reviewed this and hated it did not understand it and do not want to be fashion designers because this book teaches the beginner fashion designer a lot, something that you would learn in college! Believe me I know because I'm going to college for fashion design and I would highly recommend this book for the beginner and serious fashion designer. A lot of fun and new ways to be creative and develop new styles from you personally. ... Read more

Product Description

The primary skill needed by anyone who works in fashion is the ability to convey—to clients and the general public alike—images of the designs. The impression given to the viewer depends on whether the fashion design drawings are good. Contemporary Fashion Illustration Techniques thoroughly describes the basics of fashion illustration, and covers the latest trends such as vivid images, sprightly movement, and garment material texture. After all, fashion drawing is not simply about sketching a body and face; only when you accurately reproduce the garments and their colors can the designs truly come to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
I love love this book. I follow the instructions and achieve the results i desire. The book explain so well the technique, concepts and how garment works once it gets tranferred onto illustration. I take this book everywhere with me when i draw. I also love her drawing technique as they look more lively and real than other books. The models are pretty and pleasantly presented. I'm not even enrolled in any fashion design courses yet but considering to do so. This book helps me test my skills and confirm certain areas that i have missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a great book with fabulous illustrations and drawings. It is very helpful for people who try to learn how to draw a fashion model.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was okay
Not the best book ever but I thought it was worth the cheap price. The front page looks very high end and modern but the inside has kind of ugly pictures that were weird. The feet were also huge compared to the rest of the body. I guess it was to cartoonish for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful and useful book
This is a clean, modern and well prepared book. It's small and includes relevant and useful instructions and illustrations for fashion drawing. The figures are consistent and drawn perfectly. I will keep it forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers A to Z in fashion illustration
Carol Nunnely's Fashion Illustration Techniques Encyclopedia is a great book for beginners or people who would like to learn more about experimenting with different media and develop their own style. She covers the figure and croquis extensively. It cover proportions and then breaks it down to legs, hands, feet and faces, by giving examples from different angles and positions. She covers each medium in detail and describes when to use them best, when you are first starting out.She also show examples of each and then shows a close up with detail of the illustration. She also suggest which combine well with each other, which allows you to get comfortable with them and then you can experiment on your own, which she encourages. One thing Nunnely talks about is the importance of line value and shape. This makes or breaks a illustration.Nunnely explains clearly what mediumis good for different things one would like to achieve. She gives great examples, accompanied by a description. At the end she goes into details of clothing and how to show folds in different materials. She also covers the use of color and how it can push an illustration into different desired moods.I did not know anything about illustration and how to start, this booked helped me tremendously.I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in fashion illustration, from people who are just starting, to people who want a great reference book to further develop their style.I hope you enjoy as much as I have and will continue to do so.

The templates and style of fashion illustration used are dated and the proportions were not what we were being taught at school, which rendered the templates unusable for me. Even after I learned how to properly sketch for fashion I couldn't adapt or use the templates because current fashion illustration shows a more elongated, stylized silhouette. I ended up sending this book to my 12-year-old niece, who has shown an interest in fashion design and will probably find it useful for basic construction of fashion silhouettes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for what I needed it for
I ordered this book because I'm a very visual person and with writing a novel, I was trying to figure out exactly what kind of fashions/uniforms I wanted in the book.I can draw portriats, but figures...not so much. The only complaint I have about this book is that the figures are not all the same height. The guys are WAY huger than the women and all the women are not the same. But other than that! It's worked out great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fashion drawing
This book has helped me to fine-tune my illustration skills and get my proporations right.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugly drawings, useless "templates"; try another book
While the tutorials on proportion are somewhat helpful, the drawings, unfortunately, are ugly. The poses lack the edgy and modern look found in other books and among top design houses; they are stiff, and the drape of the fabric is all wrong: it is generalized, and the way it is drawn not only adds nothing to the garment. The folds make it impossible to tell the weight and type of fabric, and in many cases, are not in accordance with the fit or how any fabric would behave.

The details are inconsistent. Some faces are attractive, others unsightly, poorly drawn; some figures have decent poses with some interest, most of the others perch themselves awkwardly on the page, slouching over and oddly angled. As for the idea of using templates to trace, there is nothing in the adult figure section worth tracing, nor is the layout really meant for this, contrary to the title

The section on drawing children in better than the other parts of the book, as are the renderings. They actually manage to capture much of that cheery childhood feel, the cute faces and expressions, and some playful gestures.

Overall, I do not recommend this book, especially when there are so many others that feature great drawings, have helpful tutorials, and generally provide the reader with a solid foundation on fashion design. The Best book on fashion illustration is "Fashion Sketchbook" by Bina Abling. It may cost much more, but it is worth it. If that's too much, keep looking around--this book was a waste of money, and I would not recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Deceptive title
If you are hoping to use these templates to draw over for your portfolio, this is NOT the book. If you want a better idea on how to illustrate for your portfolio, this IS the book. This book goes in more depth on fashion illustration than any other book I own. It should be called "Fashion Illustration for Dummies" Great Book! ... Read more
