Following that period of growth, the community established its Bahá'í National Spiritual Assembly in 1962. In 2002, about 300 Bahá'ís were recorded, including both Iranian Bahá'í refugees and Danish converts. `Abdu'l-Bahá, the son of the founder of the religion, wrote a series of letters, or tablets, to the followers of the religion in the United States in 1916-1917; these letters were compiled together in the book titled Tablets of the Divine Plan. The seventh of the tablets was the first to mention several countries in Europe including beyond where `Abdu'l-Bahá had visited in 1911-12. Written in April 11, 1916, it was delayed in being presented in the United States until 1919 after the end of World War I and the Spanish flu. World traveling Bahá'í journalist Martha Root's subsequently visited King Haakon VII of Norway among her many trips. The seventh tablet was translated and presented by Mirza Ahmad Sohrab on April 4th, 1919, and published in Star of the West magazine on December 12th, 1919. Excerpt: Whaling in Japan may have begun as early as the 12th century. During the 20th century, Japan was heavily involved in commercial whaling until the International Whaling Commission moratorium on commercial whaling went into effect in 1986. Japan continued to hunt whales for scientific research, and Japanese whaling is currently restricted to hunts conducted by the Institute of Cetacean Research. The meat from scientific whale hunts is then sold in shops and restaurants. This is allowed under IWC rules, although most IWC members oppose it. These hunts are a source of conflict between pro- and anti-whaling countries and organizations. Nations, scientists and environmental organizations opposed to whaling consider the Japanese research program to be unnecessary at best and a thinly disguised commercial whaling operation at worst. Japan maintains the annual whaling is sustainable and necessary for scientific study and management of whale stocks. Japan also argues that objections to whaling are based upon cultural differences and emotional anthropomorphism. During the two world wars, the chain of island groups - Orkney, Shetland, the Faroes and Iceland -linking Europe to North America, acquired great strategic significance. Operating from its main base at Scapa Flow, the Royal Navy and its allies sought to contain the German naval threat within the North Sea and protect the northern flank of maritime operations in the North Atlantic. This book tells the story of operations along this northern front in a sequel to the author's earlier account of Scapa Flow, operations that had to contend with fierce weather as well as a determined and capable enemy. While the clandestine, daring operations of the Shetland Bus to maintain contact with occupied Norway are well known, some other aspects of the story have almost faded from memory: the Northern Patrol of armed merchant cruisers based in Shetland in between 1914 and 1918 that implemented an effective blockade on German commerce; the lonely patrols of the Coastal Command flying boats; and the military occupation of the Faroes and Iceland in between 1940 and 1945. The book also recounts some remarkable incidents, such as the arrest in 1914 of the staff of the Lerwick Post Office, the laying and clearing of the North Sea mine barrage, and the VE Day riots in Reykjavik.
